      Ruby Jones I agree that a little anxiety can be helpful. Constant, daily, crippling diagnosable anxiety disorders that many folks suffer from are not useful in the same way as feeling mild anxiety about changes or new opportunities.

      Anxiety needs to be coupled with reward. Stress should be intermittent, not endless.
      Think of it like the opposite of anxiety - pure adrenaline thrill. Its fun once in a while, but if you're high all the time you'll shatter your mind and body. Its why they call them adrenaline junkies - they are past the reward stage of any high and are now just doing it because they don't know how to stop.

    • @andromidius
      @andromidius 4 года назад +2

      @@sid6554 Yeah - respectable mature types. Being older doesn't make you that. I can see the appeal in someone like George Clooney, he is maturing like a fine wine with a side of cheese. Most men are not that. They are socially inept, often not very bright, usually ignorant of anything not directly concerning them and totally clueless about what it is women are interested in men for. Sure, some women probably like balding unfit slobs working in lower-middle management. But some guys like whales, so its not really reasonable is it? Can you imagine if a woman who ticked all your turn off boxes hit on you relentlessly? That's most straight men.
      And its not just about looks. Its about personality. Mutual respect. Charm and wit. There are guys out there who should gross me out, but because they are so charming and interesting to talk to I find them endearing. Just like there are women who won't ever win a beauty contest but are so full of life and intrigue she'll turn every head in the room.

      We need both left and right wings for stability, if we didn't have liberals then minorities would be marginalised and eventually persecuted but if we didn't have conservatives then ethics would take a backseat to "progress at all cost" and we would end up killing ourselves 'I am Legend'-style with a supervirus or genetic modifications that we only realise are terminal once hundreds of millions have had them.
      If you only have an accelerator you will crash and if you only have brakes you will never go anywhere, you need both if you want to prosper. It's the extremists that we don't need, those ultra-conservatives that chant Nazi slogans at Jews and Muslims and the ultra liberals that try to make us feel guilty of every action by throwing raw meat at people in fast food restaurants or throwing paint over people every time someone manspreads on the subway.
      When you see Antifa and the EDL throwing bottles at each other that isn't the left versus the right, that's the far left versus the far right. Both groups should be dropped off on a deserted island and left to fight one another.

    When Derren talked about how we need anxiety, I felt that. I've always said that we can't have one without the other. If not a single person on the planet experienced depression, how can we truly appreciate joy? How would we even know what happiness is if we have never felt despair? The move 'Inside Out' reflects this well too.

    I love both these lads but I have to say that; suffering from the mental condition Anxiety and just feeling anxious is completely different.
    I suffer from a wide range of mental illnesses, including anxiety and it's very different. Being out and about in a situation where you're kind of meant to be anxious is fine. But suffering from anxiety 24/7 about nothing, as in no situation has come up but you're still scared/nervous/having a panic attack is not natural.
    There's a big difference and I don't expect people without mental illness to understand that, before I get a lot of "Pull yourself together" comments...

    He seems to have a really good view on Stocism. What I've read of it makes it seem like a garbage philosophy. Though the idea of changing what you can and accepting what you can't change seems like a really healthy outlook. Plus not poisoning your outlook with "positive" expectations. I emphatically disagree with the idea that your suffering is due to your own choices. It becomes victim blaming when considering people with PTSD due to experiencing a horrific incident that they had no part in creating. I'm going to have to read his book sometime.

    • @suzanne2
      @suzanne2 5 лет назад +3

      Agree with you. I just realise that spirituality and religion may be part of that stoicism, the letting go of what you cannot control.
      Another profound thing I learned from this interview is that right wingers are fear based and left wingers thrive on hope. Something Michelle Obama said this week as well. But better explained by Darren.
      Wow, Russell, I'm impressed by this interview.

    • @Climix

      "...horrific incident that they had no part in creating"

    • @suzanne2

      @@Climix I think Chriscom28 example of PTSD is not a good one to apply to stoicism. Because a traumatic event does alter your brain and gives you a mental disorder. It has nothing to do with a general outlook on life and daily stress. In case of PTSD it is not just a matter of letting go. And it would be victim blaming if not treated properly.

    My wife and I convinced our kids we still love each other, and don't dream daily about brutally murdering the other one in a cartoonishly ultra-violent gore-fest that would make Jason Voorhees puke on his own shoes.
    So I guess I'm a psychological illusionist too.

      You are the reason I never want to get married. Why the fuck would you want to waste so much of your life around someone who pretends they don't hate you in front of the children you created with them? What a miserable existance.
      I'd rather ditch that person and find someone I won't end up in a toxic relationship with.

    Could Derren change the facsist neoliberal corporatist system that gave us Trump in the first place? That would be better. It's like whack a mole. We can get rid of Trump eventually, we can't seem to agree that our corrupt system is what breeds people like Trump in the first place. And believe me if we don't change our system one day someone worse than Trump will come along..
    Or will we just focus on Trump like a bunch of morons and ignore the systemic issues at play?

    Derren has told this story before about the 4 foot wall but in an entirely different context. Said he was walking home in bristol and a drunk guy started a fight lol. It's in his book as that too. Now makes me question whether it's real or not

  • @louisemarianiehausniehaus6680
    @louisemarianiehausniehaus6680 5 лет назад

    I am rather curious to know whether the kinds of people who are susceptible to emotional manipulation/altered perceptions of reality have to operate at a certain level of self awareness to enable this... would be interesting to see if the key points chosen have to tie into one of their own core beliefs. If not would it actually work? I don’t think so because there wouldn’t be any discourse between their ego self and their conscious self.

    With understand that Derren did contextualise the subject of his show by describing his as a “racist trump supporter”. Why can’t Russell leave it at that?? Instead he keeps trying to go back to “trump is evil”.
    Russell, we get it, you don’t like trump, you say it 100 times a day. You link every joke back to him. You are obsessed with him!
    Never have I seen such a downfall in a comedians work because of his obsession with another man.

    I get what they're saying about normal anxiety, but the difference between feeling anxious (which can be good) and having severe anxiety is like 'having a sense of touch/healthy nerve endings' versus 'I have chronic pain and it is a problem.' If the goal is healthy levels of stimulation, then "demonizing" is less an issue than that we learn together what's "this is normal go live ur life," and "oh no this is overwhelming u let's get u some help."

    Love derren but being a racist and not believing in open boarders are not the same thing, just because you believe that boarders or a state should exist doesn't mean you want harm to come to people- and ironically his documentary proves this

      @God Almighty I agree however, liberalism and actual liberals aren't the problem- its progressives that are my issue because they are ILLIBERAL and fascistic, it's like when conservatives are conflated with "far right" I get all kinds of frustrated because they are worlds apart but the media and alot of people dont understand what these terms mean.
      Also I live on an island so we have a natural border so I'm aware of the people around me shaking their head at the idea of a border wall in the USA as we dont have the same issues

    My GP, my counselor, My work my Union. All told me to seek treatment for anxiety, take drugs. Turns out, I was right, the treatment I was receiving isn't in good faith, the harden up attitude, the "wait for a good situation", "a better tomorrow", as if it would just happen was all bollocks.
    I strongly advise you, if you can. Remove and limit sources of anxiety, perhaps learn to live with less, get treatment like dental work, don't worry about the cost. Get the pain sorted out, ignore the bills. You might financially lose everything. but when you shift your focus to your health and good living, you can step back and make and make better decisions.
    GOALS cant make you happy, goals do.
