I LOVE how James is putting the effort in to really communicate to the viewers how great Derren is. He knows that Derren isn't known in America and is really selling him. Awesome job!
The thing is....Derren really is amazing and James really is trying to get people to understand that in UK...Derren really is one of the top most exciting entertainers.
I think my son knows this trick. This one time he had a friend over and I heard him through his bedroom door say to his friend “turn off the light and I’ll put it in my mouth”. Glad they had a shared interest in magic :)
BlackSH0veldeath sugar glass is bs magician has been eating glass for hundreds of years with a proper technique anyone can eat glass ruclips.net/video/YbpCw5ZnP5o/видео.html
"They're certainly more attractive and more amenable to flattery." Audience doesn't laugh. I guess that's the difference between American and British humor.
I'm so envious of Americans who haven't heard of him before and I'm excited for them that they'll be watching his videos and shows for the first time. He truly is a national treasure in UK. Push in particular was very interesting and personally a very inspirational show. Love this guy!
Michael Stuart yeah he definitely deserves one. He's deserved a knighthood for the last few years! But knighthoods have become cheapened now. If people like Nick Clegg and Eamonn Holmes got a knighthood, he shouldn't care about them too much.
He was in the USA years ago for a previous TV show and it did well. A RUclips friend of mine also saw his show in NYC last year & people loved it. Needless to say, Hypnotist/Illusionists such as myself actually look up to Derren and often admire his work. Looking forward to another visit from the man himself!
I still havn't seen push yet, I didn't know he had done anymore stuff here in the UK! I've been watching him for must be about 10 years since his trick or treat things
I have no idea how Derren planted a list of words in James' head, but the rest is pretty straightforward (I think). Derren eats a real piece of glass. That's practice and making sure you absolutely reduce glass to powder before swallowing. But James eats a piece of sugar that Derren has planted on the napkin right after he pulled it towards him. Right here: 4:55. That piece is actually a little opaque. The piece probably has a thin coating to seal the sugar taste for some short time. The apple is meant to hide the sugar flavor while chewing. The water dissolves the sharp edges of the sugar. Hence the pause before swallowing. The genius part is the questioning, which, not so coincidentally, starts right after James starts chewing. The thing is, lying requires full concentration and doesn't allow for multi-tasking...like chewing. That still leaves open, how Derren planted a limited set of words in James' head. No idea, and a little bit creepy, to be honest.
Yeah if you listen carefully you can hear it drop into the pile of glass. Classic misdirection getting everyone to focus on the piece that James is holding. As for "planting" words in James' head, Derren has done a tv episode years ago and one thing he focused on was advertising and marketing and how it's used to influence people. In the episode he gets a couple of advertisers to design a logo for him but what they don't know is that he's already influenced them through subliminal messaging to design a logo almost identical to one he was thinking of. Here's the video for anyone who's interested: ruclips.net/video/YQXe1CokWqQ/видео.html
@Erik Thank You. Finally someone thinking! The guessing trick was hipnosis, and its not only sugar thats eadible and reassambles glass. Im sure. Though it might been sugar and apple to cover the taste. This trick would be impossible if he used random bulb with different curvature than the "sugar piece" he planted.
i was so against him 6-7 years ago about him and my friends convinced me to go at Hippodrome in Bristol and watch one of his shows and i was keep saying its all staged and actors and everything and then all of the sudden he randomly chose one of my friends and he hypnotized him and he made him drink a whole pint of vinegar. i was just speechless and since then im one of his biggest fan! he is truly genius and im so happy he got me wrong
It's hard to tell what he was doing, since it could easily just be him accidentally touching the table or the napkin with the glass on it. But it's likely he eat real glass, while he slipped James the fake one, since it wasn't necessary that James actually ate glass as long as he thought he did. LOL Either way it's absolutely riveting performance as always. XD
At 4:53 You can see (and hear) when Derren adds a piece of sugar glass to the pile - the one he gives to James. The sharpness of the apple disguises the sugar.
ts probably not real glass. they probably switch to sugar glass. hence the apple. apple is sweet. you wont know the differnce since youre eating apple same time as the 'fake sugar glass'

Dear Americans, if you thought Chris Angel was awesome than prepare to have your minds blown. Derren makes him look like a budget birthday party performer. And fyi, the tricks Derren does for James arent even scratching the surface on what he can/does do.
When he was working in a restaurant in Bristol before he was famous, my parents met him He went from table to table performing tricks. He made my Dad’s wedding ring float. They came back after a year or so to be told the restaurant couldn’t afford him anymore and that he had his own tv show lol
You can hear him place sugar glass at 4:55 that's why he pulls the glass towards him. also why he gave apple to james, so he didn't know it's sugar glass.
Peterscraps Nope, it’s real. Watch literally any of his other shows where he does this. Google is free sweetie, don’t make a fool of yourself on the internet.
You're right bro...it was sugar glass. Apple was just for confusion so james doesn't find it was sugar glass. He placed it quite well when he focused all cameras towards his glass piece which he was gonna eat.
Derren Brown is indeed a national treasure and it's crazy to think he isn't already huge in America!! Anyone who hasn't seen The Push - Oh man, it's incredible. Literally everything he's every done has been mindblowing!
It's all about perception. He will have phrased a word to make him think about it. When watching live he explains how he put words in the audiences mind and leads them down a path they don't even realise
4:56 i hear the sound of something drop onto the pile of glass (while his hand was down), i have a feeling he dropped a piece of ‘sugar glass’ onto the pile, then later on gave it to James, and told him to eat it with the apple so james cant tell that its sugar glass.
Good catch, and I think you're right. I've followed Derren Brown for over a decade, and while he always puts himself at risk, he never puts anybody else at risk, even though he makes you think that he is. But James and the audience thought it was real glass, and that's where the illusion part of it came in. As for Derren using cold reading to know what James was thinking, that part is real.
@@azurevenus7281 James wouldn't have let it touch his tongue for fear of cutting his tongue. Hence the apple has time to mask the sugar before he tastes it.
very very well spotted. Yes, these are the kinds of things he does to influence a person. As some of the other commentators here also noted, the shape of the apple slices was of the opera house in Sydney. I'd imagine there are a good few other give aways with this, but it takes a while to analyze. He is just amazing!
studmalexy Not just one word, it’s one of many things he would have done to influence James. Some of which others have caught / will continue to catch. And some of which probably occurred when the cameras weren’t rolling.
Thanks! Yeah I think Derren's the best at what he does. If the apple slices were indeed intentionally shaped liked the Opera House, that is truly incredible. So glad he is making it in the US now. Long overdue.
Pepi Islamovic-Muslimsberger Allahut Nacktbar like try to eat glass. And I know they say it’s safe but we do have few dumbasses in our world. Let’s not forget the “tide-pod challenge”
For all those saying this is fake you're so wrong. I once went to one of Derrens stage shows and he produced a white rabbit from the inside of his own ass hole. Step aside Harry Potter, this man's a legitimate wizard who casts spells that work and shit. 100% confirmed
I've never seen Derren mix the glass eating trick with the "think of anything" trick but I'm glad he did. The two work excellently together to enhance the illusion.
like when he makes his heart stop onstage, or talks across glass, or hammers a nail up his nose - those are his gory ones particularly, but Derren has a knack for convincingly acting in pain or sickness.
Watch 4:53 to 4:56. You see Darren lean in and hear then "tink" as he drops the sugar glass on top of the real glass. Also, compare the glass that Darren eats from 4:57, to the "glass" that James eats at 7:17. Darrens' is much more clear, and not as cloudy as James' piece. Darren ate the real glass. James ate sugar glass.
Maybe, as he might not want to take the risk especially in the lawsuit happy US. It's not impossible James didn't know that though. But he is right, you are actually pretty safe if you did swallow such fine glass crunched up. I wouldn't recommended it but it shouldn't be dangerous.
Truly the best in the world. I've been a big fan of Derren's for a while and I recently saw his show 'Secret' in NYC last summer and it was absolutely mind-blowing. I still question everything that happened that night, as my brain simply cannot rationalize how he did what he did. I cannot wait until he returns to the States!
I'm from the UK- it's safe to chew down a small piece of glass it won't cut you. It's not really needed in the trick, it just makes it seem more impressive. However, the bit where he reads James's mind he's actually reading James's face and that's the impressive bit.
No. James was telling Derren things that he...James...had been programmed to think before he'd even sat down at the table. (If you'd noticed the shape of the apple slices you can tell they mimic what? The Opera House in...Sydney.)
god I love Derren sooo much he used to be somewhat of an obsession, when other girls cried over seeing pop stars I did when I spotted Derren during a trip to london, or when I saw him in edinburgh - my obsession faded and moved onto something else (as can happen with people with ASD), but he will always have a special place in my heart. So glad he has the chance to do US shows and I hope he can impress as much as he has impressed me over the years!
Might be a long shot but could have something to do with the apples and the way they are arranged or them gold things in the background? Sydney opera house? conditioning the mind? I have no idea but I would love to know how this is done.
good theory. yea maybe there are a few different things around and all he has to do is try to figure out which one he went for, which is why his questions were mainly what letter it started with
That is what he does, for instance watch his show Enigma, he always has things placed around the theatre, bars etc that you wouldn't even notice but your brain does and it gives you unconscious thoughts so when you think say, you're picking a colour or number at random you're in fact picking what he has basically already told you through these little things he has dotted around the place. Watch Enigma and you'll know what I mean, that's probably the best show he's ever done, Russian Roulette and The Events are pretty great too.
It’s conditioning. It’s where he trucks your body and mind to doing what he wants! He does it loads and it’s amazing to watch! I’m not sure what it’s called exactly but he done a performance with these medical students and it’s crazy what he does with a nail!
His tactics are to make your mind think of things by relevance so the apples and the gold centre pieces defiantly relate to the opera house, he did an episode called The Heist where you can see this happen it's amazing
I think he has to do the bulb and glass trick just to get Corden into another state since it would be difficult to do a trick on a specific person. It was shown during the apocalypse episode audition scene that there are people who are immune/difficult to hypnotize.
Brandon Diau Pretty sure a lot of professional football (soccer) teams have open try outs. Not sure how legit this website is but it can't hurt to try if they're not asking for money. www.axsoccertours.com/pages/professional-soccer-tryouts
Brandon Diau in America, I'm trying to start off in the MLS and try to move to a big team in Europe from there. Either that or go to some camps in Europe over the summer. I'm 18
he is an absolute national treasure. love from the (anyone who says this is fake, he does shows in the uk and does these experiments to random audience members)
Lol I love all the Americans who are saying he swapped it for sugar glass when he didn't even touch it. He's been making people eat glass for ages, he even explains how it works!!
Eating glass isn't safe though. Especially not lightbulbs that can contain mercury and other dangerous elements on the inner side of the glass. Chewing real glass can permanently damage the enamel on your teeth and cut the inside of your mouth. If this trick is real than he is incredibly irresponsible for giving tainted glass to people to possibly crack a tooth on, or he slips in a piece of sugar glass at some point and gives that piece to them. My vote is it's fake, most of these mentalist people incorporate these tangible "magic" tricks along with their psychological conditioning tricks.
What do you mean he didn't touch it? He literally picks it up himself from the table and places it in James mouth. That is the entire reason he has James eat a piece of apple so that he doesn't realize the sweetness of the sugar glass.
@@heinyml right, because he wont taste it before eating the apple right? Lmao so dumb. If it was sugar glass he would have known, as he ate it before the apple. So this makes no sense. He gave him the apple so he would chew the glass more naturally and have the glass mix with the apple, creating an applesauce like mix in his mouth. A lot easier to swallow that way for the inexperienced.
@@emfromthechi He gave him the apple almost immediately. Why would he have tasted the sugar glass before? You think he was rubbing his tongue around what he thinks is real glass? You only say that it "helps" chew the glass because that's what he tells you to believe. It makes no sense to eat a sweet piece of apple unless he is hiding the taste of the sugar glass
@@heinyml So when you take a shot of vodka and chase it down with a coke, you dont taste the vodka at all? Your argument is totally illogical. He wouldve tasted sugar if it was sugar glass. Why would he need to cover it up after the fact.
He placed a piece of sugar "glass" on the napkin between the 4:50 and 4:54 mark. He picks it back up and thats what is in the hosts mouth as he chews. :) Still sharp but certainly easier to eat with the apple without noticing the change of taste and dissolved with the water swished around.
If you travel to Asia, or my country to be specific, eating glass, metal or coconut shell as performance is common. Traditional performance. And there's no such thing as sugar glass lol. People should really travel far. It's easier judging if you dont witness yourself. Sometimes it's not a sin to just enjoy the show without trying to solve the mystery.
Vicki Dewi couldn’t agree more. Except that there is such thing as sugar glass lol. They have bottles entirely made out of sugar; they’re called breakaway bottles and they use them on tv and films as a prop used mostly for fight scenes
There is diffinetely a thing called sugar glass, it's used by actors and performers a like, also used as edible wine glasses when you have parties. No clean up required. Every time you see a bottle smashed on screen over someones body, that's more than likely sugar glass.
Vicki Dewi there will most definitely be sugar glass in your country and used by many performers, but yeah traditional it is done with real glass and takes a while to master. Just like with many dangerous performance such as sword swallowing or fire breathing

But James and the audience thought it was real glass, and that's where the illusion part of it came in. As for Derren using cold reading to know what James was thinking, that part is real.
that's why the trick works.... misdirection makes you concentrate on the glass shit... and not how he can guess the Sydney/matchbox thing
@@azurevenus7281 James wouldn't have let it touch his tongue for fear of cutting his tongue.
Hence the apple has time to mask the sugar before he tastes it.
2:22 Does anyone else hear him say Oz, as in Australia?
Clueless
very very well spotted. Yes, these are the kinds of things he does to influence a person. As some of the other commentators here also noted, the shape of the apple slices was of the opera house in Sydney. I'd imagine there are a good few other give aways with this, but it takes a while to analyze. He is just amazing!
that's a bit of a stretch isn't it?...would he really be influenced just by one word?
studmalexy Not just one word, it’s one of many things he would have done to influence James.
I feel like people might try to do this at home now....
Everyone can do this. What's the problem?
Pepi Islamovic-Muslimsberger Allahut Nacktbar like try to eat glass. And I know they say it’s safe but we do have few dumbasses in our world. Let’s not forget the “tide-pod challenge”
Yes, you're right. A lot of idiots out there. But if you know how to do it, you can eat glass, swallow sword, do firebreathing and so on.
Lucy Heartfilia dont let the few represent everyone
Dale Harker yeah I know I just don’t want people so go bite a freaking light bulb thinking they know how to do it😂
I've seen him 3 times here in the UK. If his shows comes to where you are, I can't recommend highly enough that you go and see it :)
For all those saying this is fake you're so wrong. I once went to one of Derrens stage shows and he produced a white rabbit from the inside of his own ass hole. Step aside Harry Potter, this man's a legitimate wizard who casts spells that work and shit. 100% confirmed
The Wise One I fucking spat my coffee everywhere reading that
That's nothing, I once saw him pull a grown man out of a rabbits asshole. The rabbit died, but still.
@@Sadpanda82 now that's a comeback
lol the set up on this was too good
This story is 100% true ! I was there I was the rabbit
4:22 me when ever I open up a wrapped burger 😂😂😂🤣
the most amazing thing about this was james eating fruit.
shots fired
Haha
it would have been more interesting title "Derren Brown Has James Eat Apple"
Yes must be strange eating fruit and not the usual diet of bacon fat, pigs trotters garnished with lard.
lol
So excited that Derren is getting recognized here. Been a fan of his for years and been trying to get him booked in the states. Go, Derren!
Tbh he has 1,000 better tricks than the chewing glass thaing
Jake Murphy do you even know what the trick was
its not glass lol
it is glass lol
@@wyterabitt2149 yeah that would be quite the lawsuit. Especially for someone who isn't an American citizen
he read my mind the way he done that to james at his show in london last october. he is amazing!
That's amazing! Did you do any survey before the show?
Our family has been going to see Derren Brown for a few years, watching him live should be on anyone's bucket list
Derren is a treasure
PErsonally the apples are just layed out. does not look like anything. Any programming would be done before the show
Goddess .FourWinds What about the matchbox? And James could have thought of a million different things.
What does being from the UK have anything to do with it?
Derren Brown is way more popular in the UK and has subsequently toured the UK where he has done this very same trick where he eats glass.
god I love Derren sooo much
he used to be somewhat of an obsession, when other girls cried over seeing pop stars I did when I spotted Derren during a trip to london, or when I saw him in edinburgh - my obsession faded and moved onto something else (as can happen with people with ASD), but he will always have a special place in my heart. So glad he has the chance to do US shows and I hope he can impress as much as he has impressed me over the years!
6:50 - subtitles - you're welcome
Haha this has the craziest subtitles I've ever seen the whole way through - what a funny mess :)
Derren Brown is amazing, watch his show it’ll genuinely blow your mind. You are welcome America.
Woah, I hardly recognized him with his shaved head. Glad he is getting some exposure in the US :)
I just love Darren Brown. Im from ASIA btw. And i think he will blew Americans mind.
Went to a live show of his about 3 years ago. It was crazy!
Guy is a genius, love his work. If you believe in Psychics, watch his US seance from a show he did some years ago...
Those in USA I highly recommend. Seen him 3 times and the lives shows are utterly amazing
Heres a video of me eating lightbulbs! ruclips.net/video/ml1xpoIonJI/видео.html
the push isn't a new Netflix special... it was aired on channel 4 in 2016 but with the name Pushed to the edge... its just been updated a little.
TylersTerrifyingADVENTURE most Americans haven't seen it before so they're advertising it as new for them.
"New netflix special" "Channel 4 show" Two completely different things, so yeah, it is new to netflix...
People of America. Derren is a legend in the UK. Watch him and be amazed!
Might be a long shot but could have something to do with the apples and the way they are arranged or them gold things in the background? Sydney opera house? conditioning the mind? I have no idea but I would love to know how this is done.
That is some of the things he does, so definitely possible
good theory. yea maybe there are a few different things around and all he has to do is try to figure out which one he went for, which is why his questions were mainly what letter it started with
That is what he does, for instance watch his show Enigma, he always has things placed around the theatre, bars etc that you wouldn't even notice but your brain does and it gives you unconscious thoughts so when you think say, you're picking a colour or number at random you're in fact picking what he has basically already told you through these little things he has dotted around the place.
Deren Brown he needs to Help me signing a Professional Football Contract by manipulating Football Managers Minds!!
Brandon Diau Pretty sure a lot of professional football (soccer) teams have open try outs. Not sure how legit this website is but it can't hurt to try if they're not asking for money. www.axsoccertours.com/pages/professional-soccer-tryouts

Alex where do u play
Brandon Diau in America, I'm trying to start off in the MLS and try to move to a big team in Europe from there. Either that or go to some camps in Europe over the summer. I'm 18
Why did james open the broken light bulb like a Christmas present😂4:22
"More attractive and more mean-able to flattery". I see what you did there Derren.
I'm from America and I certainly know who Darren Brown is, absolutely astonishing.
James is so brave. I would have refused to follow the swallow command.
My ex girlfriend refused the swallow command too. That's why shes my ex

Holy crap I was thinking of Sid the sloth from Ice Age so when he started to say Sydney, I flipped
Aww!!!James looks so cute excited!4:24
He ate real glass but James was definitely eating sugar glass
Yes probably, but we will never know for sure, which is the brilliant part. XD
Agreed, Jame's piece looked a little less clear lol
Im so glad Americans are finally going to see how AMAZING Darren is, if he makes it big in America i will be so happy.
Is it me or does Derren look unwell? I really hope he’s ok because he’s one of my personal heroes.

I’ve been lucky enough to be invited on stage in a Derren Brown show...surreal experience. A genuine must-see!
would have been better if james wrote it down before he guessed, could have just gone along with it for the sake of the bit
James could have tattooed it on his butt and it wouldn't have made a difference, believe me, it's Derren Brown we're talking about not some noob.
Bendydick Cuckatoo I love your username and profile pic lol
The apple is the cleverest bit :)
thought this dude was sean evans for a sec ngl
Braden Howell OMG ME TOO I was hoping anyways
I love Derren Brown! I'm so glad that he's getting more exposure here in the US.
His show is amazing. It's really funny too, he's a great showman.
bring back professor robert winston
I've watched this an unhealthy amount of times, I need new Derren Brown content!
WTF i WAS THINKING MATCHBOX TOO
I was thinking giant black mamba dildo
studmalexy that was my first thing I thought of too, changed it to match box
Every time you see a bottle smashed on screen over someones body, that's more than likely sugar glass.
connor etchells Oh Sorry, you misunderstood. I mean there's no sugar glass used in traditional performance in my country.
Vicki Dewi there will most definitely be sugar glass in your country and used by many performers, but yeah traditional it is done with real glass and takes a while to master. Just like with many dangerous performance such as sword swallowing or fire breathing
connor etchells I didnt say there's no sugar glass in my country, I said it wasnt used in traditional performance. Ok??
Saw Derren live in London a few years ago he was brilliant! He's truly clever at what he does
