ELO - Mik's Violin Solo/Hungarian Dance No. 5/Orange Blossom Special Live @ Winterland

- Taken from a bootleg recording from The Face The Music Tour live at Winterland Ballroom San Fransisco February 14, 1976. As in previous shows, Mik Kaminski and Hugh McDowell performed solo violin and cello pieces respectively during the show. Mik performed a self-written and unnamed solo piece that sometimes used passages from Edvard Grieg's In The Hall Of The Mountain King as well as heavy echo effects as the solo part progressed. This violin solo part merged with a selection from of Brahms' Hungarian Dance No. 5 and Orange Blossom Special when the drums, bass and keyboards joined in. The self-written first part varied from show to show and it is likely that Mik improvised the performance at each show. Hugh performed his own self-written and unnamed solo piece which similarly merged with Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight Of The Bumblebee where bass and drums joined in, although this was not improvised and was the same self-written song at each performance. (It should be noted that the solo piece, although the same at each show on the Face The Music tour, was different from the solo piece performed at the prior Eldorado tour.) It is curious that on all of the official releases, these solos were not released. It is probably due to contracts and/or copyright reasons that these solo performances have never been officially released, although they have been bootlegged from various sources. I used the only existing video of Mik Kaminski performing a violin solo from the German TV show appearance Szene 74 in Hamburg Germany. The bass on this live performance is played by the late Kelly Groucutt and not Mike De Albuquerque and Melvyn Gale was the other cellist playing with Hugh and Mik not Mike Edwards. I hope you enjoy it!
Jeff Lynne: vocals, guitar
Bev Bevan: drums
Richard Tandy: keyboards
Kelly Groucutt: bass, vocals
Mik Kaminski: violin
Hugh McDowell: cello
Melvyn Gale: cello

Pozdrawiam elo wszystkich i Kamińskiego Nika za jego zdolności muzyczne i że znalazł się w grupie elo poprostu robisz to mistrzowsko
I remember Mik doing this solo at the Myer Music bowl in Melbourne, Australia on the 9th of Feb 1978, bloody fantastic.
So sad that more violin is not used in bands. This kicks butt!
I think the same can be said for just about any solo because of the commercial considerations at the time, and some music journalists' opinions.
This is the guy, who along with ELO, made me feel cool to be a violinist. Thanks, Mik, Jeff, et al.❤
As a lover of both ELO and traditional bluegrass, I can honestly say that this boy has it going on!
Thanks, Mik, for such an inspiring number. ELO has been my fave group from their beginning. There is no doubt that the genius of Jeff Lynne helped ELO to be such an awesome group. But, sometimes, I feel like the very talented guys that supported him were underappreciated. Mik is definitely one of these guys and I wish there was a way to let him know just how much he was loved by this lady from the States. I could listen to him play anytime and do, whether it be viewing his videos with/without ELO or playing recordings of ELO, ELO II, or the great Violinski album. Can't forget Orkestra or the Orchestra - his latest projects. Wish I could have seen him perform in these later years. Feel fortunate to have seen them live during their Out of the Blue tour. Mik always caught my eye. He was fantastic! Anyway, thanks again to a very talented man.
Grande Kamiski Saludos de Chile
How hard would this be to play on a violin
Nasz drogi Polak w zespole :) BRAWO :)))
If you don't have actual footage, use a stills instead.
Having a "production" card at the start of a RUclips video is already "bleh" but to take video footage that doesn't line up with what's being played and isn't from that production is.... well, it makes me say "hey, how you like that new version of Adobe Premiere? Have you done the star wipe yet?"
Ok - video aside, great song.
Chris Popp and I whine about that annoying 30 second intro audio clip the UL places on every video...at least we get the Booed Audiio
Mik dances an Irish jig and Hugh does a bit too!!! The fiddle and cello players were the ones who put on the show back in the day. Jeff is a great songwriter and a whizz in the studio, but not the greatest performer. Jeff Lynne's ELO sounds great, but they aren't very entertaining when they play live. I miss the old guys: Hugh, Mik, Melvyn, Bev, Richard and Kelly. Kelly was such a good singer. It was nice to see Richard on the first tour and the Hyde Park video. I wonder why he's no longer with the band????
I'm pretty sure Richard just got too old to tour and retired from it.
The string section were treated pretty shabbily. They were sacked by letter. ELO was never the same - and although many will disagree, I always felt that the Time album, brilliant though it is would have been given an extra dimension by using the string section. RIP Hugh (and Kelly).
Fantastic!
LOVE MIK!
That's some fiddle player da got !
I wonder the age he begun to play violin
he's veteran
ELOにはまる理由は、まさにこれです👍❤
Thanks a lot ! I hadn´t heard this live performance before.
This guy has a nice channel with great videos! Too bad he has to downgrade the experience by adding those 20 second promo intros to everyone of his videos!!!!!!
Same here, good to hear the magic of Mik. Well done
love you Mik
Byłem na koncerciee b w Bydgoszczy i Gdyni . Nigdy bym nie pomyślał , że posłucham na żywo . Super . Szkoda tylko , że nie było Jeffa Lynna
Is it my imagination or is the video not even close to being in time with the audio? Was still nice to watch though.
* note: I wrote the comment above right before it showed the rest of the band come in (you can't hear the band), so obviously the video and audio don't match.
Oh. My. WOW. !!!!!! 🤩✌️
