Mother of 7 who went blind and lost her memory after surgery gets a special Secret Santa surprise

The EastIdahoNews.com team is busy helping a local Secret Santa give $1 million to deserving people in eastern Idaho this holiday season.
Stephanie and Ron recently moved to Pocatello from Nebraska with their seven children. With high hopes for the future, they started a business together with Stephanie, a gifted stylist, cutting hair.
Shortly after opening the business, Stephanie was diagnosed with a mass in her brain that needed surgery. During her recovery, things took a bad turn. While fighting for her life, Stephanie suffered major trauma to her brain, leaving her blind. But even more astounding and overwhelming, she lost the last 20 years of her memory.
Stephanie remembers dating Ron, but not their marriage or the birth of their children. Because she cannot see, she is completely reliant on others to care for her as she learns to cope every day.
In the midst of all this, Ron has been trying to keep things going while taking care of Stephanie and his children.
Secret Santa asked the East Idaho News elves to pay Stephanie and Ron a visit with an early Christmas gift. Watch the surprise in the video player above.

It feels criminal that such an essential medical procedure comes with such an exorbitant cost.. I'm glad Secret Santa can help them.
It IS criminal that anyone in the US should have to pay such extortionate medical bills. I'm in the UK, I was born here. For most of us who live here, paying such high medical bills is unthinkable!! We go to a hospital or doctor and get treated under our NHS and it is all free at the point of delivery. It is paid for through taxes for everyone but no one pays anything other than their taxes here. If you wish to go private then you pay but otherwise no payment is required. My disabled daughter has had neuro surgery three times, followed by ICU care and many, many other procedures in her life...cost to us ...nothing..... every single day, I thank God for our NHS❤❤❤❤!!!
@@boggleboggle100I am from the US and have a friend in the UK...She can't believe our health care system!! Yep they have total control over lives it's not even funny 😢 It's disgusting what has to be paid out for a lot of individuals trying to survive.. ❤

On the flip side, new therapies like this are quite remarkable. They don't come cheap, but there is a lot that goes into the 2 week process.
@@boggleboggle100I'm not sure it's accurate to say that medical expenses are free. The taxes are much higher, and those add up over the years. This is an alternative therapy that isn't covered by insurance.

For some reason that quote from Fred Rogers and his mother has stayed with me as well. If only people would remember it there would be a lot more hope and much less despair.
These Secret Santas always reinforce the message that no matter how bad your life is someone else had it worse and is dealing with it with grace.
You are so right Diane I have been feeling sorry for myself because my wife recently passed away - but this living nightmare these 2 wonderful people and 7 children have been though and they can still laugh!!!!!!!!! I do not think i could handle it, such grace like you said.

The fact that this amazing SECRET SANTA and science has to step in and try to fix mistakes in the cells used to create our organs and our biology is inspiring but is proof, if needed, that a loving caring heavenly father doesn't exist, as it would make it impossible to create us so vulnerable to biological processes like tumours that we have no control over knowing the needless suffering she endures 24 hours a day.

This was fabulous, and Ron is nothing short of an absolute angel of a man!!! I hope this intense therapy helps her get her entire memory back. It would be horrible to lose so many memories of special moments with your family and children. Not sure what can be done about her eyesight exactly, but I hope eventually she gets that back as well.

This one has touched me like no other. The tears flow when I think of her not even remembering her husband and 7 children, let alone the fear of no longer being able to see. My love and prayers are with this family 🙏🩷🫂
She can't see but she looks beautiful even tho they weren't expecting guests. That shows her husband is taking good care of her.

This story just broke my heart. I can’t imagine waking up blind, and no memory of most of my adult life, especially my husband and kids. Stephanie, I hope the memory treatment is successful, and you regain at least some of those lost memories. Ron, you seem like a devoted and supportive rock to Stephanie, and your kids. Was just feeling sorry for myself about my illness and some regrets and clicked on your video - wow! I’m ashamed! They have been through so much individually and as a family! Yep, Cognitivefx is nearly $25K for the 2-week program and another similar 2-week program is $30K. Glad that they reached out to help her. I hope we can get an update at some point. I wish there was a way to recover her sight, too. The brain has a lot of plasticity. As adults, many of us have forgotten how to ride a bike, but can easily learn again thanks to that plasticity. The brain can rewire itself when parts are missing or damaged. There have been people who are literally missing part of their head and brain, like 1/4th of their brain. The brain can sometimes activate and rewire other parts for a different job than what they were originally doing when the damaged parts can no longer fulfill those parts. Here's hoping she can get her sight back. I don't know that much about a process like this.
I've watched this happen in a now friend in her early 20s/former student who was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor the night after her first day of second grade. She plowed through the first years of the rewiring process in a beautifully stubborn way, is now in college, and a very gifted artist.

@@texasgina tyvm me too every year for Thanksgiving I buy two hams one for me and my wife and then I donate the other one to a family in need at the salvation army it's a tradition my mom started and when she died in 2013 I made a promise to use to keep it going I help out any chance I can and I do it because that's how my mom raised me to do

Thank you so very much Secret Santa for your kindness and compassion in bringing life changing, because it is just that if stephanie can get back all her treasured memories that has gone. To have to go through such major surgery to start with, but then to lose both sight and memory in one fell swoop, that is so sad. I find the American system of charging through the roof for surgeries and healthcare in general, that to me is a disgrace and am thankful for our NHS, no matter how broke it is. Surely having national health service that is there for all, not just for who has the most money to pay for it, it should be there for everyone.

Some of the most cherished memories we have are of our children over the past 17 years since the first was born. Celebrating milestones and looking at each other knowing that we're actually succeeding in bringing up our 4 kids; the many cherished memories of the various things the children have done and said throughout...to imagine that that is gone for one of us....That would be devastating. If my wife were to lose 25 years of life, she wouldn't even know me or remember that we have 4 healthy, beautiful children together
I hope we hear of the miraculous restoration of her memory in the next year or so. As a family, we're praying for the best possible outcome. 🙏

I never knew thst there was such a thing as cognitive therapy. I had a brain stroke in May 2018 & I lost 62.5 years of my life. Marriages, divorces, children's births & deaths, how to walk, talk & fold laundry, everything was gone. I just hit my 5 yr marker from not having another stroke. I'm doing well- I remember bits n pieces of my past. Now at the age of 68 & my reading & comprehension is about 5-6 years old. I still have cognitive delay & left brain injury. I was disabled before my 3rd stroke- which was the brain stroke. I thought that I was just going to have to deal with the many losses & things that I dont recall or remember. I dont drive since my 3rd stroke but its a lack of confidence according to my Doctors. I love seeing the videos about Secret Santa, keep up the Great Work. Love from SW, IL

I started choking up when Nate was providing the back story. But when I saw Stephanie, my goodness, I just wanted to wrap my arms around her and give her back her memory and vision.
