Young dad with brain tumor whose toddler died in tragic accident gets touching Secret Santa surprise

The EastIdahoNews.com team is busy helping a local Secret Santa give $1 million to deserving people in eastern Idaho this holiday season.
In 2012, Eddie began having unusual nerve sensations in his left arm and persistent headaches. It was discovered he had a brain tumor. He also developed hydrocephalus, which almost took his life.
Eddie, the father of three children at the time, drove to UCLA from Burbank every weekday for six weeks to do photon radiation therapy on the tumor. His infant daughter, McKaylee, was with him every day at treatments and doctor appointments. He called her his "happy pill" because she was such a good baby during all these appointments and she brought a smile to him and the other cancer patients and nurses.
During this time, Eddie and Mary found out they were pregnant and they purchased a 2006 Honda Odyssey Minivan to accommodate the size of their growing family.
Over the next few years, treatment was going well, and his tumor had stabilized.
In Aug. 2015, Eddie drove his van home from work and waited for the garage in the parking structure to open up. He didn't know that 3-year-old McKaylee was coming into the garage to see him. Unfortunately, Eddie didn’t see or hear her, and there was a terrible accident. McKaylee didn't survive.
In 2022, routine scans confirmed Eddie's brain tumor was active again, and he has been undergoing treatments since then. His current symptoms, including nerve pain on the left side of his body, balance issues, and relentless headaches, have left him unable to work.
Eddie is still driving the same minivan that he drove when McKaylee died. In tears, he recently said that every time he gets in his van, he remembers the accident. It has been his wish to get a different vehicle but he has been able to work and afford a new van due to his brain tumor.
Secret Santa asked the East Idaho News elves to pay Eddie a visit and drop him off an early Christmas gift. Watch the surprise in the video player above!

Oh, boy, this one was a tearjerker. I hope this man was able to truly forgive himself because it was in fact an accident. McKaylee wasn't here all that long, but she seemed to serve a real purpose in making others happy who needed it the most. I am so very glad he was gifted a new vehicle, and I hope that helps him out with getting that image out of his mind that he seems to have been replaying over and over every time he had to get into the van. I truly wish this kind man the best of luck with his brain cancer and treatments. I would like to wish Eddie and his family a wonderful Christmas and even better 2024!!!

I agree! All towns need a secret Santa! So, many great needs everywhere. I see it and it’s so heartbreaking. I don’t have that kind of money to bless people like that but I randomly give what I can. Right now my brothers family is almost homeless and I’m not allowed to house them in my home. My brother is disabled and doesn’t understand the evil of scammers and he got taken advantage and had to file bankruptcy and that makes it impossible for him to even rent an apartment. He discovered that after leaving terrible living conditions at a place. I’m doing my best to find something for them as they are running out of days at an hotel gifted to them for a few weeks. I can’t believe how hard it has become to rent a home or an apartment. And how terribly expensive property has become! May more people who have more than enough become a secret Santa. I truly believe that greater dividends come our way through the system of giving.

I lost a very dear friend this year after he lost his battle with a brain tumor - they caught it too late. My thoughts and prayers with this family and hope that he will continue to win his battle with this terrible disease. Just reading the title of the video my eyes got watery. Hearing Nate read the Secret Santa Letter I couldn’t believe that it was describing somebody’s life journey with so many challenges. When he opens the door and is so calm, polite, and is able to still smile at the end… that’s just incredibly amazing ❤
I love that secret santa finds people who are truly suffering or struggling. It really does help brighten their lives and lighten their load.
This was probably the hardest secret santa to watch.. this family has so much burdens and I hope they find happiness this Christmas. I hope he can go into remission and enjoy life again!

The picture of the little sweetheart at the end was my undoing! Such a sad story for this family! No material things can ever replace their little Angel but not having to get information van can at least ease some of their pain. Once again, God bless Secret Santa and God Bless this family. Being a Dr In EM who has treated children who have been run over by their parents, I have a window into this mans grief. I cry, I hold my loved ones, I treat everyone I meet with kindness - you never know whats happening and everyone, EVERYONE has a story.

Typing through tears on this one. It's been a rough almost 3 years for my family after a car accident and some minor health issues. This put things into perspective for me on just how lucky and blessed my family is despite what I now view as minor things. I can't imagine the fight this family has had these last 11 1/2 years and to be standing as strong as they are. Im so happy they were gifted this new vehicle.
