I've been painting birds in watercolor for a few years now, but recently started exploring working in acrylic, these tutorials are exactly the education Ive been seeking. your work is very inspiring Joseph, I'm so happy to have found these tutorials. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills.
American has so many different sparrows. Sad is when many sparrows are trapped to be used as target practice. Within the group of what they think are House Sparrows there are other breeds. The lark, savannah, Lincoln, chipping, white crowned, which I am working on , Fox sparrow Vesper, Clay Colored, Grasshopper , and that is not even the half of them.. I am so grateful what you are doing, to helped people take notice, and to teach them how to see and paint the birds they see. You Keep hem as much as possible in their natural state, which I too do in my painting. Working on the golden Eagle. AR. state in the farm/area roads often the Eagle is inspecting Road Kill., I got sketches done.
I'm happy to share my paintings and process here to help others with their paintings. We have some of those sparrows in Canada as well, but of course they all leave when the cold winter sets in - except for the house sparrow. And I do love painting the birds in their natural habitat as I enjoy seeing them in the wild and want to share that experience in my paintings. Hope your golden eagle goes well! I have an idea for one myself, but it's going to be quite the idea to tackle so it may a couple years before I do that one.
Golden Eagle, You are right, I usually seen them on the back roads in Arkansas SUN giving pure golden colors, In North Carolina BLUE RIDGE area, less farmland more trees , and In Wisconsin, getting closer to Canada. I might use Masonite cut down to size, use Rust-Oleum, couple coats with sanding in between. At moment trying to do all 344 birds. Wearing 3 layers, cold must of set in Canada.. THANKS Need the push to keep on going.@@JosephKoensgen
Again your painting has turned out wonderful Joseph. There’s a great mix of detail, colour choices and background blur that really makes that bird pop/stand out, just beautiful! Your videos are so well presented as mentioned above. Bravo!
Thank you for Another great video. Can you remember the size of the surface? And can you do a video on the background as well? I really like learning from you.
You're welcome! Always happy to share. This painting was 8 x 12 inches. I didn't film this particular background, but I do want to work on something like this again where I can share the background in a bit of a longer video.
Thank you!! I'm painting on hardboard, or sometimes called masonite, that I seal with acrylic medium and then many coats of acrylic gesso. I then sand off the rough spots for a smooth even surface. I like really this because it's very sturdy, and a great surface for painting very fine details.
Really nice work Joseph; and very well filmed/presented. Your work is very high level; the level of refinement and detail here is crazy. I love the texture of the feathers- great stuff 👍😊 -Best of luck on your art and your channel, and much support from one artist to another. Liked and subbed.
Wow, thank you so much Larry!! I really appreciate that! I've definitely subscribed to your channel as well, as I appreciate the support and videos from other artists. Going to watch more of your tips from a working artist. Good luck to you and your art channel as well!!

Agree! Sparrows have been overlooked and unappreciated! Great that this artist has highlighted this species!

Beautiful little songbird painting.
What surface are you painting on? And how do you prepare that surface before you start painting? Thank you.

Thank you for the information on preparing the hard board. I wouldn’t have thought of that. I’m so glad I asked and you shared.
