    One of the issues he runs into repeatedly preventing him from getting the “clean” result he wanted is pushing, throwing, or spinning the bucket with force. The pendulum typically works best being brought out a certain distance… and then just let go of. Or twist the string, bring it out a certain distance and then let go of it. When he’s pushing or throwing he’s adding some weird torque which is eventually “corrected” as the pendulum continues to swing but it makes those first couple of passes of paint lay in a slightly different pattern (or makes it splatter before it settles). You definitely can use throwing it as a technique but you have to be very in tune with the weights/directions/forces involved - at least for a clean geometric result - which is hard to do when you’re brand new to something.

    • @AkibaAvenue
      @AkibaAvenue 2 года назад +32

      You are totally right. he messed up the whole process by keep pushing the paint in every direction. One more thing that he didn't pay attention was the size of the hole that he make with the screw driver... he should have used a smaller one.

      If he just let it go without pushing sideways, the pendulum would swing back and forth and paint almost straight lines. That's what happened on his first attempt, not very interesting aesthetically. To get some rotation and a curved trajectory, there needs to be an initial push to the side. Gravity alone cannot do it, as it's only makes the pendulum accelerate towards the lowest point.

    oh this is super cool! We did this for our daughter's birthday party when she turned I think 5, it was. She's always been super arty and so we had an Arty Party and pendulum painting was one of the things we did outside, using an old white sheet and the paint cups attached to the pergola beams (and kids paint, not house paint). Layered a few colours, and got 2 really cool artworks out of it. The kids had a blast taking turns to swing the pendulum and seeing the results, but the parents had great fun, too! if you want to try this on hard mode, have a look at "chaos pendulums" which is just a pendulum attached to another pendulum. To convert a paint pendulum into a paint chaos pendulum, you just need to add a weight in the middle of the string that's a bit heavier than the paint and tin. I messed with the idea a bit, but it's very hard (expensive) to get the flow just right, because the velocity of the paint tin is unpredictable and changes wildly as it goes. It's messy but would make for a very entertaining video. Also fun is to use 3 bottles tied together with a different colour in each, especially if you wind a lot of spin into the string.

      The Exploratorium in San Francisco, CA USA has a thing where they do this with markers. My daughter did one for me at the age of 4 and I have it (framed) hanging over my computer right now. Since there was a long line and they didn't let any one color go for long, most of the other kids were basically circles or lines like Jazza's first attempt, so I pointed out to her while were waiting that if she wiggled it as she set it off, not just a push, it would make cool shapes. And it worked very well.

    • @wrongturnVfor
      @wrongturnVfor 2 года назад +18

      lol, yeah duh. He was trying to figure out what viscosity matched his screwdriver sized hole. And he figured it out. It actually depends not just on the diameter of the hole but also the height of the column of the paint and the density of the paint as well. I mean one could get all technical and use Poisuilles formula but that would take the whole fun out the trial and error and figuring it out and frankly out of art. I meant splotchy done in clever ways can also be wonderful art. Maybe as a chaotic base for a clean geometric pattern with a couple of asynchronous lines on top. Jazza is proof you dont need maths to understand physicsand you dont need to understand the technicalities to get the art right. so chill. And for someone who 'knows physcs" you might wanna open the chapter on angular momentum and harmonic motion to know why the weight on the bucket is important.

    they remind me of Spirograph from the olden days, you can still buy the kit by the way. BUT what would be fun is to supersize such a kit with gears from a machine or clock or even laser cut...id like to see that being done ;-) this was great to watch but spirograph for giants might be more precise for Jazza

    Just a little of 3rd grade physics would had help you a lot:
    - The weight doesn't matter. (Well, just have enough to tension the string...)
    - The force of which you launch it doesn't matter.
    - The speed of the pendulum is constant.
    - The path only depends on the length of the string, and how far from the center you let the bucket go.
    So just pick a string lenght, pick a place to start, and just let go. no need to apply force.

    • @MarkRiverbank
      @MarkRiverbank 2 года назад +19

      The caveat, your 3rd grade physics assumed a frictionless system in a vacuum with a non-liquid pendulum where, as you stated, the path and period are all about length. Real world, there are a lot of external forces acting to stop the pendulum’s movement, so more mass on the pendulum reduces the relative influence of those forces and keeps it going longer. But, you’re absolutely right, his biggest mistake was trying to throw the pendulum rather than just releasing it.

    • @Phlarx
      @Phlarx 2 года назад +9

      Speed of the launch toward the center doesn't help (it just acts as if you released it from higher up), but you can play with speed sideways, in the direction orbiting the center. This determines how circular the pattern is.

    • @rattlethestars6016
      @rattlethestars6016 2 года назад +5

      Note to add: On the contrary, mass is probably one of the most important factors especially in trying to keep a more controlled, localized environment. If the mass is increased, that allows for less chaos. Meaning that he wouldn’t have to pull the bucket back so far (x being decreased/consistent) and/or the initial velocity does not have to be so high. This also allows for a more continuous motion of the paint flowing out without as many splotches. The basic principle of momentum is p = mv where there’s not so much emphasis on constant velocity, rather the initial velocity (v = x/t) and the initial distance. As seen in the example video with the weight. There, the end product was more controlled. Because the main controlled/constant variable is the mass. At this point, the friction and other forces can truly be irrelevant in getting a great outcome.
      In other words, more mass = more momentum.
      Thank you for my Ted Talk…

    One thing you're doing every time that may be making the results worse - poking the hole in the container through the bottom. This is going to push the metal inside, which is going to make it harder to get a nice laminar flow. And, as you figured out, a higher viscosity liquid will be more laminar.

    From a non-art perspective, this reminds me of the Foucault Pendulums I've seen at some children's museums. They're basically really long pendulums that knock over pieces on the ground to mark time passing. Except the pendulums themselves aren't the things spinning - they're designed to the pendulum stays swinging the same direction, and the rotation of the earth itself moves the ground and the pieces into its path.
