This video was very helpful for me. Painting reds are a challenge to keep them rich and bright. Your intro was very helpful to let me know what paint you are using. The. instruction in the time lapse was really helpful. I have subscribed to your channel, thanks for making these!
This is absolutely stunning 😍 I have always been pretty good at drawing but am somewhat new to painting. I would love to paint this, maybe even with the addition of a female cardinal for my grandparents as a Christmas gift. So just a few questions for you if you don’t mind. -what color were you using for the beak? -do you have any color suggestions for a female cardinal? -do you ever do tutorials for your entire paintings? *I love the background in this painting, it is so beautiful! You are truly talented, and I am in awe every time I watch this!!
Thank you so much!! I appreciate that! And it's no problem. For the beak I mixed cadmium red, cadmium yellow, some grey and raw umber just to dull it a bit. So you could use cadmium orange to start and go from there! And a colour for the female, I would say something like a grey with some raw umber and some yellow ochre. And you could layer some of the reds over top where some of that colour is showing. I mix all my colours with a few variations of the primary colours, so I'd also recommend lots of experimenting with colour mixing if you're new to painting. In my latest painting video of a fall/winter scene, I go through most of the painting from start to finish, where I talk about the background and some of what I did there. I'm not always able to film my painting process, but in the future I'll be doing more stuff about the entire painting and talking about backgrounds a little more. Since it's such an important part to each one of my paintings. I hope that helps!!

I usually build the frost up in 2-3 layers, starting with a grey and fishing with just white. I plan on making a more detailed video about frosty branches in the future. I do share that a little bit about that at the end of my video about painting a fox. ruclips.net/video/l5Kl9lzHic8/видео.html
Beautiful, Joseph. Finally, someone who uses payne's gray! I enjoyed this, and now am subscriber. I look forward to more. I worked on a cardinal earlier this last week, and I wasn't happy with it. I should have just traced it. Is that what you do? I was just wondering, since I didn't see how you got him up there.
Thank you so much!! I love payne's gray. It's such a versatile colour. I use it all the time as it has a great purplish tint to it that works great for shadows and making darks more vibrant. Also, I draw out my birds on paper first, then trace them on to the board. I rarely draw straight on the board since I'm usually wanting to make adjustments to the placement. This way I can adjust it here and there if I'm not entirely settled on where I want the bird to be in the painting. Then when I've got it where I like, I can transfer it on and I'm good to go!
Thank you!! I'm sorry I don't have any recommendations at the moment, but the next video I'm working on will have a bit of info on adding frost to some grasses, so hopefully that will be helpful when I post it!
Hello Joseph, it was wonderful. I love the vibrant cardinal. did you allow sometime to a layer to dry before painting another layer on top of bird? and where else i can follow you?
Thank you so much!! Since the acrylic paint dries so quickly I can go back over it with layers only after a minute or two of drying time. And in some cases I'm painting on top of the layers right away. You can follow me on Facebook and Instagram, I've got links to those in the description! Appreciate it!
Thank you!! Most of the things I paint take an extremely long time, making it difficult to do real time videos. But I'm considering it for the future to find something that I could show in that way.
@@JosephKoensgen I understand that completely, but if you did the video with no volume and added a side screen to show paint added or something people would paint with you. I know I definitely would. Thank you for responding. Happy painting
Thanks for posting. I am a beginner and I love trying to paint birds. Can you share with me the brushes you use? I am having trouble making thin, detail lines. Thank you!
You're welcome! I'm happy to share. In one my latest videos I talk about all my brushes and how I use them, and I specifically talk about painting thin lines. I hope it's helpful! ruclips.net/video/BaC9XJls3WI/видео.html
Thank you so much!! This bird took me about 6 - 8 hours. But I do a lot refining and adjusting things to make it look correct. So depending on your skill, it could be around that long. However, I'm not usually thinking about how long something will take me, and I'm more concerned with it looking right in the end. For you as a beginner, I encourage you to just dive in and practice and learn regardless of the time. You will get faster as your skills increase!
@@JosephKoensgenthank you so much for sharing your thoughts with me. I just painted one. It is just okay. I painted on canvas and it got so dry sometimes, but it looks so smooth when you painting. Wish I could do that :)
You're welcome! The reason it looks so smooth when I paint it is because I'm painting on board and not canvas. I'll be doing a video about that in the future, but I show a little bit about that in this video.. ruclips.net/video/BaC9XJls3WI/видео.html

Beautiful, very realistic painting. Thank you so much for explaining the colours and the procedure. Wish the video was regular like not time lapse.
You are a fantastic teacher as well as an incredible artist! I have sent your link to myself so I can take my time and enjoy working with you.
So so beautiful!
Thank you❤
Wow! I loved watching you add the highlights, & lowlights to this Cardinal! Beautiful ❣️ Thank you for sharing your talent!

The leaf behind the bird needs a little attention. Beautiful job. Well done. The branches R so kool.
Love your work! Amazing!
You are so right about getting red with shadows ..bit of a task. This was helpful...will try to improve on my next painting on cardinal
Glad to hear it was helpful! Yes, maintaining those deep reds in shadows can be tough, but hopefully this helps for the next one you do!
Another gem!
Wow! Your great painter!
Its so nice watching you paint, and your explanations really helped❤❤❤

@@JosephKoensgen thank you!
I love this painting:)))I was just wondering what size paint brush did you use when started adding the fine details in?
Thank you so much!! For the fine details I'm using a round 0, and I just make sure when I buy it, that the bristles come to a nice point!
Can you show how you did frost on trees as well
I'll add it to my list of video ideas, and on one of my next frosty, winter scenes, I'll see if I can work on filming some of that!
I cannot find any video on frosting. Could you help me with the link please?

It look like a real bird! By the way are you mixing ur acrylic with water?
Thank you! Yes, I am using water for mixing the acrylics.
Great
What kind of paint do you use?
I use the Liquitex professional heavy body acrylics.
