    At $60 for 5 years of service, using it for over 15 years now, Magic Jack has been as good or better than the landlines we have. Currently we have 3 MJ lines and 5 landlines. We probably make/recieve over 1,000 calls per week on the MJ lines and with the exception of some area codes in not accessible, we never even think about them not being landlines. It is truly awesome.

    I've had it for 4 years I do believe and it's been very dependable . In fact it's time to renew this month. I remember when trying to make the decision, reading 100's of reviews . It worked for some . It didn't for others. I took a chance on it and it worked out for me. Way cheaper than the $45+ a month I was paying AT&T for a house phone they had ruined by switching it to fiber optics (which meant it was worthless when the power went out) and that was no long distance just local service, or Charters's VoIP which was about the same. The only negative is if the power is out or internet is down there is no house phone but I have a cell phone for that extremely rare occurrence. Charter/Spectrum may be over priced for TV, but at least around here their infrastructure is very dependable.

    It is also good to have as a cheap 2nd phone. If you lose your cell phone or misplace it at home you can call it from your Magic Jack to find it. Also if someone leaves a voice mail message on it you get a email telling you that a message is waiting for you to hear. You can play it by just clicking on the link. (So with a cell phone you have 2 voice mails as well as an alternate phone number to give people.) It's well worth the low cost per year to have.

    I totally agree with Tyler, I have set up 4 MJ's, I've never had a problem, I have all the goodies phone companies charge you for (caller ID, voicemail, call forwarding, call blocking, etc., and it uses E-911 so that you get local emergency services. Unlimited long distance and local, some international(?), for less than $40/year.

    There’s background noise,sound breaks up caller hears only every second word
    Crackling noises, echos and they don’t know what causes it clears up a bit but
    then gets worse after a while they have reprogrammed it from their end.

    I had Magic Jack for a couple of years and loved it. I only dropped it when I found out how Google Voice works. The porting cost and Obihai set up were a bit pricey, relatively speaking, but I have not paid a dime for phone service since 2015. For context, I had been paying a phone company $93 monthly.
    Google Voice simply had a feature that I had wanted and searched many years for, otherwise I wouldn't have gone through the process of switching. I certainly do not regret doing so now. Google Voice is easily better than Magic Jack, but I never had an insurmountable issue with Magic Jack. I do strongly recommend looking into going to a Google Voice/Obihai setup. It took me months to finally commit to switching to Google Voice. The process was not nearly as intensive as I feared.

    I switched from AT&T phone service to NetTalk. I've have it for years now and I'm very happy with it. AT&T charged me $30 per month for local calls only and no extras. When I started with NetTalk, it came to $30 per year. It's higher now, but well below the cost of AT&T. For that I get free long distance, caller ID, and call waiting.

    2.) I have a 2 story home. Router is upstairs, main phone is downstairs. Do the phone & the modem (or router) have to be in the same place?
    3.) Can MJ make any use of the phone jacks in the walls of my home?

  • @williamvanhefner
    @williamvanhefner 5 лет назад +4

    The "speed" of your internet connection is not nearly as important as latency. This isn't really something your internet provider will tell you about, but suffice to say the amount of latency, speed and other factors vary greatly. Generally, you get what you pay for and a commercial grade connection is going to be vastly better than a cheap residential plan. Similarly, if you are using a cheap $30 residential router, don't expect to get the same connection quality as a commercial router. FYI, if you want to "split" your internet connection so that you can plug more connections into it you will want to buy a switch, not another router. Switches are way cheaper and infinitely easier to set up.

    I have had my Majick since December 2019 and I have to say peple tell me they hear themselves with a loud echo all the time, and tell me I break up a lot, sound fragmented etc. I mostly hear ppl well but they do break up from time to time, sometimes up to 20 seconds or so, and sometimes the phone simply cuts off and the call ends.
    Do others experience these types of problems ?

    I, and my aunt who lives next door have had Magic Jack for about a decade now, and I can remember the older MJ, and MJ Plus models had some sound quality issues not related to internet speeds that would either break up, or sound like you where underwater, but the MJ GO units fixed all that, but the cheap PSU they use to include with the MJ GO right after they got released fried both me, and my aunt's first ones, so I called up MJ support, and after some back, and forth I eventually got them to send us both out new units with codes for a free year of service, and I just tossed the PSU those units came with for stronger Motorola ones I had in my box of USB power chargers, and cables, and no problems since, but I've recently moved over to be a full time Linux user, and you need to set the MJ devices up on a Windows computer, so looks like if I ever have to replace one again I'll be doing a Windows 7 VM lol! the price is right for a VOIP line, and the piece of mind of being able to call 911(you have to pay yearly local 911 fees if you want that feature) as sometimes our cell phones don't pick up well.

    • @CommodoreFan64
      @CommodoreFan64 2 года назад

      @@GSK1126 If it's setup, then why would you need to have it plugged into a Chromebook? you plug it into a quality USB power brick, then plug your corded, or cordless house phone into it, along with an ethernet cable from your router, and forget about it. If you want an app there is one for Android, but it's always using data in the background when it's running to be able to accept calls to the MJ number, even if you are not on WiFi so be aware of that.

    I'm thinking of this for my business. The building I live in has a metal roof, and inside I have zero cell reception. I take two steps out the door, I have 3 to 4 bars. I operate a mobile business, and offer 24/7 emergency service, so I need a reliable way for customers to reach me. Not wanting 2 phone bills every month, my solution has been to have my cell phone inside a ziplock bag suction cupped to an outside window by my back door with the vibrate function on 🤣. Gets the job done, but not ideal. Is there an option to forward calls to a cell phone? I saw you mentioned an app that allows both your phones to ring, is there an additional cost for the app? If you're not going to be porting in your current number, can you pick the last 4 digits you want, or is it random?
    Thanks for the review, and for any additional information you're able to offer.
    Have a great weekend. 🙂

    magic jack is great, as long as you connect it to your PC and use the PC sound system. using an actual phone on this thing is horrfyingly bad.

    One question, don't you need a landline to have internet connection? So if magicJack need inertent, how would you use it without a landline?

      No you don't need a landline to have internet. Comcast is another option. ATT internet only is another option

      There is no antenna with HDMI. HD is for video not RF. I'm not what you're trying to plug into but it likely isn't a TV tuner. If confused sign up for a consultation with me at the link below: www.antennamanpa.com/antenna-recommendations.html

    I am about to give up on it and go to another service....it's that bad.

    I just got the magic jack home and on the Ethernet port it the orange light comes up when connected to the wireless router. But then when I connect to my computer the orange and green come on. I want to use it directly with my router but the green light won’t come on.

      While the cost does go up after 12 months, it's pay as you go so you don't have to renew it if you don't want. I wouldn't call it a scam.

    I have a landline with a 4 wire system in my home. If I want to get Magic Jack or any VOIP how do I connect it into my 4 wired system so that my call screening devices and answering machine will work properly. Also the VOIP must generate 50 VAC ring current to ring my phones. I am disabled, must use old type phones and am unable to use the new flat handsets. Quite simply, my wired system has many features that I am unwilling to give up. BTW, does Magic Jack offer all the robo call, anonymous call, and telemarketer blockers that Century Link has? With CTL it has been many months since I have had a telemarketer or robo call.

    • @AntennaMan
      @AntennaMan  5 лет назад

      You would have to hire someone to hook it into your homes phone wiring. They don't have any robo call blockers that I'm aware of.

    NOISE is NOT due to magic jack... NOICE is due to terrible grounding in your home ... Musicians using external sound cards via usb, get the SAME noise. Your computer usb, like any other think, has varied quality. so do routers and modems.
    You get what you pay for.
    the quality of digital/audio will be hurt if your computer, or router is crap, and allowing all sorts of interference. JUST LIKE THE OLD PHONE LINES WOULD CAUSE
    well now the phone system is in your house. what sort of quality lines are YOU using?
    Just like a musician, who as a guitar cord going to an amp...POOF the thing goes bad, and youre hearing static... or hum...
    for magic jack AND ANY OTHER product, similar to that, you will hear a computer static. It will increase as you do things like use a mouse.
    lets say your computer is slow. that effects the quality of the audio, because just like your computer has issues running everything else, it will have issues communicating with that magic jack.
    lets say youre on wifi, and you have bad interference... due to CFL bulbs everywhere, or you live in a house with metal all in the walls (plaster walls with wire mesh)
    well your signal is poor, and so will your voice quality
    people seem to not care one bit when poor signal hurts their cell phone. they are willing to keep upgrading, for new tricks yet the cell phone itself and its calls are not at all different. WE STILL drop calls, and STILL have to say, "thats C as in CAT nor D as in DOG.." because quality hasnt gotten any better.

    After hurricane Harvey, our phone lines were destroyed in my area. I haven’t had a phone in two years. Is it possible to port my old number after two years?

      Are you still paying for service or the number? If not, it's doubtful. Phone companies can reassign the number after 60 days of cancellation.

      George V. Cohea There wasn’t even a local area code available, much less a prefix. If I can’t get a local number, it’s a deal breaker for me.

      You can probably get a NEW local number from Magic Jack, but it is unlikely that you will be able to obtain a number you had in years past.
      I would personally recommend getting a Google Voice number and setting up an Obihai device to allow it to work with a home telephone. This Obihai setup does cost a bit more than a Magic Jack initially, but once it is done, there is no annual fee. You don't actually have to pay anything to get a local Google Voice number to use right now and test out. It is only the Obihai device that cost money, but it is totally worth the expense to get the most out of Google Voice as a "home phone."

    • @TexasScout
      @TexasScout 4 года назад

      George V. Cohen According to their website, there wasn’t any number available in my area code (361) much less my town prefix (543). I didn’t want locals to call LD.

    • @GeorgeVCohea-dw7ou
      @GeorgeVCohea-dw7ou 4 года назад

      @@TexasScout
      That is strange about the area code. The lack of prefixes comes from individual companies controlling specific numbers, and these VOIP only have access to some prefixes when a customer ports one in. The lack of a specific area code is baffling on the other hand. I do know that neither service will handle the 808 area code at all, but I didn't know about anything on the mainland. Is your local phone company an "independent" provider? This might explain some of your issues, but it definitely fails the area code conundrum.
      I guess these services won't be able to work for you, until you have an acceptable number to port into one of them.
