  • Vintage Traynor TS140 with a Gibson SG RI 61 through a Orange PPC212.
    No pedals, no post effects. Canadian solid state head, 1980's.
    Good head bought for real cheap, cleans are nice and the crunch is real dirty, which I really like.
    Has not been looked at by my tech yet.
    Not many videos about those on the net. Hope you enjoy.

    Man I want to find one of these so bad. I have the ts-25 and I want a louder head version of it. I love how heavy and disgusting sounding it gets. Is this amp crazy loud?

    Pretty interesting set of features for an inexpensive 80's amp. I'm guessing that Front/Back fader is a wet/dry control of some kind? Great stoner sounds.

    Sounds like my Hovecraft boosted with old Exar Distortion pedal. That sizzling, oversaturated top end is almost identical.

    I think a double button will work as well. My buddy owns a shop a is a traynor dealer so I’m going to see what he can find out. I think it would be cool to have the original version for it. 👍🏻

    I had the TS-140 combo for years and it was an ok little performer and it never lacked for raw output power but it was also a bit of a back breaker to lug around. The pots go bad on these amps if they aren't regularly lubed with Caig Deoxit. The EQ sliders can get quite noisy too if you are not careful. The front to back wet/dry slider is a novel feature but not really useful. The high gain sounds have too much SS tizz to them (if you are using single coil strats). Frankly speaking I wish I had kept the 2203/1960A rig I had sold before getting this amp. I ended up buying another tube amp to go with the TS 140 to warm things up and give a more pleasant crunch sound relegating the TS 140 for cleans only. My recommendation is to carefully check one of these out before plunking down any money for it and if you can audition it in person then that would be ideal because it's high gain sound is definitely not for everybody. It was a bit of failure for Traynor (the TS series lineup) if you want to know my honest feelings about it. A lot of other guitarists wondered why they dropped their tubed lineup for these (and I was among those wondering why as well).

      It's not for every style I can only agree. Cleans are good. The OD will be appreciated if you're looking for something out of the ordinary, like Stoner Rock for example. I was really suprised how well it performed VS my beta lead, which is a well known SS amp most look out for.
      Thx for the comment !

      The OD sound does indeed fill a niche. I was digging around just now to put a finger on the tube (head plus cab) amp I added to my rig back then and it was a vintage 40 w Traynor tube head ( w tremolo circuit) with a 2 x 12 cab (vertical stack rather than horizontal). I picked that amp up for peanuts back then (100 bucks IIRC). It wasn't long after getting my mitts on the tube amp that Ibanez put out a really interesting FX rack (UE 100) of which I still have today in good working order. It has the later TS808 pedals rather than the earlier square type of the original TS. I did confirm that mine has the TS circuit and not a distortion effect. Thank god for that because early distortion pedals left a lot to be desired back then (which again fills a narrow niche in the market). I don't use the UE 100 rack any more and have gone back to analog delays and analog pedals from electro harmonix and mxr for a simple 4 pedal setup into a Marshall (JVM 410H) half stack (custom 4 x 12 using swamp thangs and celestion V30's in an X pattern)and a good old Fender Hotrod Deville (4 x10). I can get any sound I want out of this rig ( punk,metal, rock, country, etc etc using one guitar Gibby LP Custom). Back to basics you might call it. Sold off about 20 pedals and got rid of the Boss GT8. I might let the UE 100 go for the right price ( around 350 USD not including shipping) if you are interested in a vintage analog rack FX unit.

    Hey Bro, Great demo!
    Luv the vibe of these amps may buy one soon! With a few pedals maybe an FX processor in the loop, this it the kind of amp I could lose myself and write some off-the-wall stuff fur sure! yea I could get off on this!

      They're awsome but very hard to find in head format.
      Just found a ts-120b, it's at the tech being looked at !
      Might end up on reverb, can't justify 2 amps that similar.

      @@SPerras Yea, the one I'm looking at is a pristine TS-75 15" speaker combo. And with my HB'qpt tele and some pedals for that dark fuzzy Doom tone stuff for effect here and there at a gig before the Plexi tones takes over! But I gotta make sure the combo cab is plywood and not particle or chip board before I buy it, cuz it ain't cheap and I hate cheapo garbage cabs!

      @@kennyh5083 hey man. The heads format (ts50, 120 and 140) are rare AF, even in Canada.
      Shipping across canada for an amp like this is usually around 100$ (75$ US). I'll see what the repairs were from the tech and keep you posted.

    Hi, love this tone! I'm trying to buy one but is very hard to find. I found a Traynor TS200 head instead. What do you think about the TS200? Same tone as the 140 or slightly different? Unfortunately I can't find any TS 200 demo or review online, would be great to hear a sound sample.

      Vittorio Platania thx for the comment. I can't tell about the ts200 as I've never owned or played one. It has to be a bit similar imo but without the multiplr options offered on the ts140 I have. They are rare in their head format, the only one I saw, I bought :)
      Good hunting !

    Hey man! I wanna know what the best stoner head out there is? In your opinion. For the genre and for versatility for other genres. I love the tone of the genre but have to play covers around my scene to get shows. What's your suggestion? Really wanting a Sunn Beta Lead, is it versatile? Does it take pedals well? And what's your favorite? For the genre? For versatility? SS or hybrid only please. Thanks for your time!

    • @SPerras
      @SPerras  7 лет назад

      Jonathan Young hey bud ! that's a good and tough question to answer. Also depends if you rely on pedals or not. if you play with pedals, get the best clean possible with 'as much bass' available / possible, at least for stoner - doom styles.
      laney aor are real good, cheap and versatile. same with the traynors (yba / ysr) but you' d use pedals with those.
      that ts140 is real cool but not for modern sounds IMO, except for crunchy blues and stoner. depends on budget as well ...

    • @jonathanyoung8646
      @jonathanyoung8646 7 лет назад

      S Perras I do use pedals, but would prefer the natural sound of the amp. For example, the beta lead has a snarl/growl I've never heard in any other amp. So basically, the best amp, under a grand or so, that loves pedals, but doesn't rely on them for the basic stoner gain sound. I'd say the best I've ran into is the Beta Lead. My dream would be to find one to satisfy my cravings in tone, but versatile enough for my band that does every style due to having to play covers in the gigs we get. Leaning toward a Beta Lead, they're pricey though. Looking for a similar sound, but sleeper of sorts. Under $500 would be even more ideal. But could spend up to a grand. Opinion? Thanks for the reply!
      And possibly what's the best pedal to nail the Beta Lead style sound? Or something like Down-NOLA album? Or just the best pedal you've run across for the genre as a whole? Thanks for letting me pick your brain man. Watch your videos a ton.

      can't even choose one myself through all the heads I have !!! If just one and you wanna use it's OD / fuzz without pedals, I'd go Laney AOR. It does it ALL but beware, takes a little time to get YOUR tone out of it, especially if you 'play' with the head's volume a lot. The EQ response is different at low VS high volume but it's a very good head that can be bought relatively cheap. You can work it out as a 'close to' 2 channel amps if dialed in right + footswitch + guitar volume.
      You'll still have money for a good cab if you have 1000$ available !
      The beta Leab is also very good, the OD Tone as really good, especially when I boosted it with my Fix'd fuzz deluxe Boost ( plz don't ask me why ;).
      It is a buit of a pain when used as a 2 channels IMO. The channel you'd use for a clean tone as to be boosted A LOT to be clean VS the drive channel, which annoys me a bit. I even use my Traynor YSR now with my band and use pedals for Fuzz tones.
      Best pedals IMO, if you don't chug and need tight paml mutes, is the BAT Coven ;) 2nd place, SUF red menace OR RAT pedal in an amp with a bit of grit.
      The perfect head DOES NOT EXIST, sorry LOL
      Hope this helps - Steve

    Love it! If it would not be troublesome , could you make a video with this amp that demonstrates how well it performs when using pedals such as fuzzes and distortions? Also, how loud can it get in comparison to a tube amp of similar wattage? Thanks for the great demos!

    • @SPerras
      @SPerras  8 лет назад +2

      ya know what, there are 4 fuzz pedals on a fligjt case right next to me. that was the next video (fuzzboxes into traynor :)
      as for the volume, I ll let you know but it's loud. Whatever your needs are it can do the job.

      Jonnie TheRotten don't have the amp in front of me but there's the od/clean + eq so a 2 buttons footswitch could work. I'd have to check the head first to be sure though but it's at the jam space at the moment ...
