The price for that Matamp was actually much lower than I expected. There are brand new amps that cost more and aren't even rare

OTU! A friend of mine sent me this video and I’m like “oh shit, I know that guy!” I used to watch your videos all the time back on your old channel a decade ago, and the shootout you did against your brother’s amp is what made me ultimately decide on the AD30 all the way back in 2009.

Back in the mid 90s when I first started playing, I used a combo of the RAT and an Ibanez Thrash metal pedal and to this day my friend and I still regard that as basically the best distortion for metal we ever heard haha, even after 30 years of getting good gear. Rat pedals can really add a new layer on top of other distortions.
i remember you having dreads, attitude, and thick f-ing tone. sad to see the dreads are gone but glad everything else is still here

I swear by the Rat. It's the best pedal, makes even my crap Behringer Bass amp doom hard.

I’ve watched you for a long time. You make the or15 sound so good I bought it immediately. You had an ad30 long ago and dumped it I think. Good to see you back. I agree best. Or15 has more instant gratification but ad30 is so juicy. Tiny terror is very close to it tonally and dynamically.

Great video! I’m basically a jazz/blues guitarist who loves metal too. My set up is a strat into a Princeton reverb. On a total whim I decided to buy a Earthquaker Devices Acapulco Gold and a Rat pedal to see if I could get a doom sound out of my tiny amp.. and by god I did! The amp is so small that it sounds like it’s about to blow up which I think kind of works for this sound. It’s not THE sleep sound but it’s crazy how close I got just with the right pedals.

I think for a more straightforward approach RAT into an amp as you show it here or Russian muff into amp is probably a better approach than the DA120. Also good examples are like any of the Windhand records.

Ever since I saw the 'Sleep in a Box' (sunless Green 100) demo on your other channel I've been tone chasing the Stoner Doom sound - pretty life changing as I've now got an OR120+PPC412, Gibson Les Paul and a fuck tonne of pedals

That sunless green pedal is where I first found you, as well. Theyve rebranded that pedal as Sunless Cold Lands. I'm doing everything DI, and am using a Two Notes M Cab. I havent gotten a real amp, yet. I'm still getting good tone, but the Dopesmoker tone is tricky for my set up. I might try the Dunwich, though dunwich doesnt exist anymore. Another company is still making those pedals, I believe. It took me months, and timing, just to buy my Sunnless lol
@@BSIII Does it Doom now sells all of Nick's pedals, and they are all geared up for serious Doom tones. Prices are super fair, and no I have nothing to do with them.

I watched this yesterday because I recently got an AD30. Which is a sick amp. Anyway today I was recommended to re-watch your left hand video. I remember watching it a few months ago. Point being: Not once while watching your AD30 video yesterday did I even notice your hand. Anyway just figured you might find that interesting.
Make sure you get 8 hours of SLEEP a night.
Awesome video, using a marshall jcm 2000 60w with a big muff OP Amp and it gets about the same sound you have, I might be looking into digital amp sim for recording, had no idea Matt used high mids, gonna have to try it out
I first saw you in one of your demo videos for the Green 100 pedal from Sunless Effects. The funny thing is, I bought that pedal from Sunless Effects and they said it had been used in demos, so I think I may own that Green 100 pedal you used! (Unless you kept it, lol)
I just made this setup on my HX Stomp and its sounds great.
I have the AD30 head with the 2x12 as well. Also the Micro Terror. I have a variety of fuzzes but I do not have the Rat fuzz. I also use the M-audio interface with protools which I use with Amplitube and the orange amp pack. Emulation used to be blasphemy but now they sound really good so I use them quite a bit.
The Rat is a killer pedal! I am actually using a rat with a tonex with OR120 capture. Will have to look for an AD30 or matamp capture.
I ordered a Zoom G1x Four recently - been looking to get a new cheap multi effects for ages. Even the cheaper stuff will get you some good results, and the OR120 Sim on the Zoom is actually pretty good. I might get a real Rat to throw in front of it though. The Nux modelling is also really good - I have the Mighty Plug which is unfortunately somewhat Doomless, however it was recently updated with their higher end models and does have an *amazing* AC30 model - Green Lung actually use AC30s! The AD30 is basically Orange's take on the AC30, so with a bit of tweaking you might get surprisingly close. And of course the bigger Nux modellers have more suitable models.

Another great option is the Reeves custom 12 watt 1x12 combo. It’s basically a handmade Hiwatt.
spot on- ORANGE ROCKERVERB IS PURE FIRE. I got a few Gibson S G that bring me to God of thunder territory. Six string is fine. But I want the fuckin right bass tone. Using Music Man Erie ball Stingray n I'm running a Wampler RATSBANE direct and it sounds fuckin great but doesn't give you that sludgey Dragonaut bass tone. The Rat is great but doesn't have the versatility of the Ratsbane. I know that you went digital which s fine but to really nail the bass it looks like an early 70's Green Matamp is the answer. Also check out DEEP TRIP/ Fuzz second to none.
I doubt it’s really possible to sound anything close to Al without at least some kind of Ric

Great video and even greater tone. I've sold my amps a year ago and went completely digital ever since. Works very well for me since I live in appartment building.
I'm using AmpliTube 5 - it has the Rat sim (called PROdrive) and AD30 sim too. I got reasonably close using your settings, love it!
Out of curiosity - do you mind sharing what amp and pedal sim you used for your video?
I use Guitar Rig 5 and go with the Hotplex and Jump heads. Nice, I've never used AmpliTube before. It's awesome that those sims exist, I had no idea. Gotta do some digging!
I've had quite a few orange amps, including a 74 or120. The or120 was the best but I think the ad series captures the 1st & 2nd position on the fac pretty closely but with more gain on tap. They're more Vox than Marshall and more Princeton than Deluxe imo. I have the ad140htc and ad200b. Couldn't be happier with them.
HX Stomp: Vermin distortion, Mandarin Rocker (Cali V30 with Dynamic 57 mic) with your settings sounds spot-on.
Dude I've been watching your videos on your other channell since day one. The progression of your work has been awesome to watch. I had your Kaiser band practice vids on heavy rotation way before the album dropped. This new channell is very cool and helpful. Question. What plug in suite do you use for guitar tones? I'm looking at buying something new and for the price it looks like amplitube 5 has the most variety for the price. Thoughts?

Cool. I have a Schecter omen extreme through a Behringer superfuzz into the clean channel of a Blackstar combo amp. (Mid gain, fill volume, full mids 3/4 bass, 1/2 treble)
It doesn't match that Classic Sleep sound but I like the noise it makes. And I reckon finding your own sound is important.
That sounds like an awesome setup and finding your own thing is definitely the key. I love Schecters and Blackstar also makes some very serious amps
Sweet, mine is a epiphone sg with dirty heshers and a bigsby. My amps are some old peavey 150watt 1x15’s and a envoy 110. Pedals are just a superfuzz, a vox wah and a tc rusty fuzz

The Laney VC 30 reaches the dopesmoker tone with a Boss Blues Driver and a Boss DS-1. The Traynor Darkhorse 15 will also reach dopesmoker tones, especially with a RAT and used on it's "pure" circuit.

@@moonicproductions I've never tried the RAT with it, yet. You also don't need to run an overdrive and distortion together, but it does require that extra push.

I use a boss me-80 multi effects unit with a fuzz with a lot of lows and mids and i roll off the highs with a lot of reverb with a epiphone les Paul with stock pickups in drop c

Well, I have 1970 Laney Supergroup 100watt, I have 1986 RAT and I have old Epi Les Paul and 4x12 cab with celestion 12G75🤔 I have selled nearly all my stuff and will sell these also. I have 60watt Laney klipp also and used to play those two amps with ab box, big muff, rat and two full stacks.. Was it loud, heck yeah😄
Now that's a monstrous setup, A/B:ing amps is destructive. I used to combine guitar and bass amps together with a zVex Fuzz Factory which was brutal!

I guess, if you added another mic like the Royer 121 or RE20 for some more low end, this would slap.

Its easy to get that Sleep/stoner/doom tone...it really dont matter about the amp. I get the Sleep/Electric Wizard tone with my Rat and a little Fender Rumble practice bass amp and when using my main rig which is a Friedman Wildwood PT20 (Pink Taco).
How man? Whats the best sort of eq for this? I find no matter what i noodle with on the amp it dosent sound great

Hey man, I’m looking at buying a Matamp to achieve tone like this, would you recommend a GT1 for something like this? I’m a little skeptical since I’ll be playing it at home for the foreseeable future, but I know the MKii is switchable down to 25 watts so maybe it won’t be so bad.

On the original recording Matt used an mxr distortion plus which is itself a pretty cheap pedal
