This is my favourite song of all time. For me, it's the drumming that makes this song, and this drummer is good. I like the double bass drumming he brought into it. My only slight criticism would be that he starts off fairly heavy handed and so doesn't leave himself with much contrast as the song develops.
Hello from the.u.k. I’m 65 now, seen a lot of bands in my time, followed the crim since I was 14. Loved the early stuff with sinfield lyrics, and with wetton and Palmer James, moving the band forward. I agree 100% with your comment, I’ve had this argument many a time With old proggers in the pub. But in my opinion I’m with you, it the best track of all time! Musicianship, lyrics, on another level, and the age of the band when it was first released. Could not get into them after RED, and believe me I tried. Take care.
I frekin love this, listened to it over and over! Played it for may 13 yr old daughter and discussed how to translate this for a middle school band. To my surprise she was all in!!! RIP John.
Listen with more bass than usual so you can appreciate the superb playing! It's very rare that a Rock song is built on bass rather than guitar. But John could!
RIP, John Wetton. Red was my fave Crimson album in no small part because of your voice and bass. and this was my fave song on that album and i think it captures the current mood perfectly. looking forward to your next contribution to the arts.
Love John Wetton, what a voice and great bass player. Good work by John Mitchell on Guitar, very important contribution to this version. Well done to all the band.
R.I.P. This concert was my first live contact with the Wetton stage performance. Next was not long time ago, at Feb 2015 during UK final world tour. Great bass player, but his vocal was avesome. Good bye John...
Crimso 69 to 74 inspirational john wetton david cross and bill bruford.so many versions of starless show what a profoundly beautiful work it is why isnt that guitar guy a legend
This is a muscular, preening version that starts at 11. Even though it doesn't have the subtlety and dynamics of the original, it's a strong reinterpretation and John's vocals are always great.
Love how powerful this version is. I love the (for the lack of a better word) fragility of the original, this version though, adds a whole new dimension. John Mitchell manages to add his own unique playing style without disrespecting Fripp. Love it. Loved the drummer, too. And Wetton was an unquestionable master anyway. R.I.P.
Choć zachód słońca, blask dnia rejestrują moje oczy to wewnątrz widzę jedynie bezgwiezdną i biblijną czerń Stary przyjaciel miłosierdzie ma okrutny, wykrzywiony uśmiech, zwiastun pustki, dla mnie to bezgwiezdna i biblijna czerń Jasnoniebieskie, srebrne niebo szarzeje mglistą nadzieją że wszystko pragnie by być bezgwiezdną i biblijną czernią
Hate to be that guy, but here's my ramble: What stood out so much to me about the original recording -- and the King Crimson live versions -- is the growth from beginning to end. It's slow and quiet in the beginning, gradually growing bit by bit. The fast and intense end section has to be earned first. A version of the song that charges right out of the gate misses the magic in suddenly finding yourself somewhere completely different, new tempo and feel but the same enchanting melody as you haven't heard it before. It just feels like it sells itself short.
I agree, but it’s still nice to hear a different interpretation of this classic song. Wouldn’t be much fun if they simply replicated the version on Red. For my money, the best live version I’ve heard is KC,s last song on its last show in Japan, a month or so ago. It’s perfect in every way. Mel Collins is next level.
@@MikeBoni I can’t make a choice between the live by King Crimson (especially the “double quartet” rendition but they all are great), and the Wetton-Jobson performance that you can find on RUclips. The latter one requires the best speakers or headphones, otherwise bass comes overloaded but it tells you of depression more than anything else possibly could.
I agree. In addition, the rhythm section plays a fundamental part in this piece. This drummer doesn't play the song as it should, and therefore doesn't seem up to the task: the instrument is too present when it should be light, and then remains empty (with that horrible double bass drum) in the final part.
Great performance overall......I just felt the guitarist was stepping on things in the first 1/4.....He's really good.....gotta be hard to cover a master
I think Wetton's band performed this better than the live Crimson versions I've heard/ the middle transition has to be HEAVY as it's presented here !!!###
I’m from the u.k.and 65 years now, and bought the crimson albums As they were released. Love the early stuff, and when wetton left so did I Fripp should have re named the band, i didn’t get it And still don’t and I’ve really tried.
It looks like the sound of this guitarist, in 2003, inspired Robert Fripp for the way he is playing this piece right now, with the new incarnation of King Crimson. No ?
The magical build-up of the original song is not there. The guitar is all over the place, sounds like Dream Theater stuff, a bit annoying. I think John wanted to bring it closer to a younger audience. Don’t really like it. But that voice!. Miss you John!!
Way too fast tempo, a much better and more accurate exists on John's 1997 live in Poland entitled " The Night Watch", but the many live versions that King Crimson released can never be eclipsed. Nobody can match Fripp, Bruford, Cross and Wetton for preforming this piece ❤ RIP John 😢
John Wetton forever! ❤
John Wetton and Greg Lake, two of the the greatest bassist, singer song writers ever and both with KC. Rest in Peace my friends...
John Wetton and Greg Lake. My favourites. Hearing them and singing their songs by myself is the best ever
...Wetton is simply genius..absolut.fantastic..
The most underrated Phenomenal Singer.
And then there was the rest of his arsenal...
He is not dead because I am again watching him play.
This is my favourite song of all time. For me, it's the drumming that makes this song, and this drummer is good. I like the double bass drumming he brought into it. Criminally underrated as a vocalist
We all miss you John... RIP
this song , performed by King Crimson live is one of the greatest musical compositions ever!!!!!
Always loved John's voice, warm and sensual. And the wonderful basslines…
RIP John. I will soon join you there. Hope for another chance to hear starless live.

Miałem wtedy 14 lat. Piotr Kaczkowski zapowiedział pożegnalną płytę King Crimson. Zakochałem się w tym kawałku. RIP John.
I think that Wetton is the most important !
Fantastyczne!
Great performance. The restatement of the principle melody is awesome! Pure joy on both the stage and in the audience!
Wow. Simply great.
That guitar is so sleazy I love it.

He was a good one and will live on forever...R.I.P. Great one...
I don't know if the version from the "Red" album will ever be equaled but I really enjoyed this. So cool to see JW having such fun with his music.
Splendide et quelle version ! Une pensée pour le regretté John Wetton et ma déception de n'avoir pas pu le voir en concert.
Wondrous voice. RIP JW
my favorite version of this song 💜

Absolutelly right about John Mitchell. He does "hocus pocus" on his guitar.
@@dorobrojek He's incredible. I had the pleasure of seeing (and hearing) him live twice with "Arena" It's mindblowing what he does on the guitar.
