Great video. I have a newer version that requires you to push down on a safety tab while the slide is open to get it to break down. Don’t put fingers in there though. Use a dowel or something. Thought your viewers should know. Great tutorial
Ok. That is probably more in line with the Shield line of pistols and M&Ps.
Or just release the firing pin lol
For future sd9ve owners I definitely 100% agree with the apex spring and trigger upgrade! It made a huge difference!!
😊
I like this pistol, no complaints and thanks for taking the time to spread some basic knowledge on cleaning and oiling it up.
Thanks for watching!
First time working on a pistol, thanks for clear and informative instructions
Glad to help! Once you get past the removal of the slide you are home free!
One of the best, if not the best video regarding the cleaning of this pistol. Just purchased it 2 weeks ago, appreciate the great in-depth step by step, helps very much in getting familiar with it. I like the REM & CLP for the different components as well. Thanks again. 👍
Always glad to help and thank you for watching! Comments like yours are the reason why I keep making videos!
Alec, you wont be sorry. Picked mine up 2 weeks ago with a crimson trace and its by far my everyday carry weapon from now on. Love it!!
Lol I was just gonna say don't get it with the trace. It's easiest with just the sights
What about picking one up new for 25% off Father's Day sale and getting the Crimson Trace red dot and SS guide rod for upgrades. Eventually the Apex trigger w/spring kit next. I've shot the SW40VE and my friends SD9VE and SD40VE.
You left out a very important step in cleaning an SD. The extractor(spring loaded lever sunk into right side of slide behind large opening is steel, not stainless, as is the small spring pin which holds it in place. Humidity and precipitation will cause this extractor to rust. Even a tiny amount of rust will cause this extractor to malfunction and not grab the lip of the cartridge and extract and eject it. This causes the weapon to jam.
The solution to this can be handled in this way in my experience.
When cleaning the pistol, spray a small amount of BREAK FREE in the gap at the rear of the extractor while the slide is off the pistol. Let it soak while cleaning the grip part of the weapon. Then, I use the tip of one side of my needle nose players on my multitool to push the extractor hook portion out with light pressure numerous times. You will see rusted fluid show itself next to the springed roll pin. Wipe and repeat, spray, manipulate, wipe, repeat until Break Free comes out of rust free. I then use canned compressed air to blow out excess Break Free. I then put a tiny amount of gun oil in top and bottom Crack adjacent to the springed roller pin.
Again, if this rusts even slightly, the extractor will not work.
I carry an SD40VE as my carry weapon while working as a funeral escort, and we work outdoors in all types of weather here in Texas. Luckily, I discovered this design flaw early into ownership when the first time I planned to clean my pistol, I removed the magazine but the round in the chamber failed to eject when I pulled the slide back. I figured our very quickly what was wrong.
You can also buy a punch and remove the retaining pin and clean underneath but the same end is accomplished in the first method with a lot less effort. Otherwise, great video.
I just inherited my father’s. I couldn’t figure out how to break it down and clean.thank you so much.
I’m glad to help! Thank you for watching!
Great video! There are lots of newbs like me, and lots of videos seem to look down their noses at us. How else can we learn? Nice instruction, and great explanation. Thanks!

Fully agree! Definitely get my sub from the knowledge I’ve got from this video!
Thanks for this video. I just picked up my SD9VE and it's my first handgun so this was great, very informative.
I think it's very important to add to the spring rod at 15:03 that there is a way to have that spring rod at an angle if you use the top groove when pressing down to barrel assembly. The spring rod needs to be seated all the way to the bottom to where it is not angled in any way, being parallel to the upper assembly. It'll take a little force, at least it did on mine, to get it properly seated. I've used these instructions before with no problem last year. This time however the spring rod was slightly tilted when I put this back together and yes it was a slight pain in arse taking it apart again to correct the issue. Good job on your video. Just wanted to point that out to anyone who's having an issue like I did.
Awesome stuff, man. Novice gun owner but I felt comfortable and confident cleaning the gun after watching this video. Thanks!
Bruce the One Legged Lifter I’m glad to help you! Thanks for watching!
I just cleaned and Lubed this gun (my first one). before shooting it for the first time. Your video was really easy to follow. Thanks again..
Eddie G Glad to help and thanks for watching!
That is a nice, well spoken , very informative demo video. I just picked one up recently and the way you held the pistol in your hand while taking off the slide really works and is easy! Taking it off is definitely more complicated than most others. Thanks for the info throughout the entire video.
Thank you for watching and I'm glad to help!
@@travisp11 this pistol is amongst my favorites.
The sd40ve was my first handgun. Great gun! Gave it to my dad. The slide serrations are very aggressive.
This has been this first time handgun owners go to video in cleaning my weapon. Thanks for such a clear and detailed process and explanations for the why's and how's.
I’m glad to help! I make my cleaning videos with the first time handgun owners in mind. It makes for a longer video but I try to cover all of the details. Thanks for watching!
This was an excellent video. Recently got back into firearms. My S&W SDV is a great firearm to get back into my new journey. Video was clear, concise, straight forward. First owner replaced trigger and spring mechanism. It does make a difference. Overall...Well Played...
Thanks!
Thank you for watching and I’m glad to help!
Thanks for this video! Just got my SD9 VE and used your video to teach me how to clean it. Very easy to understand, thanks!!!
Glad to help and thanks for watching!
Good basic cleaning video. I bought the SD9VE for the wife and we both love it. I did buy an aftermarket slide release bar for both this weapon and my Glock and they make both weapons SOOO much easier to field strip ! As for the trigger upgrade, I did order the spring kit and installed it and polished the areas of the trigger mechanism that had metal to metal contact with each other but reinstalled the original striker spring because of light primer strikes with the new one in the kit. Although I never had a problem with the recoil spring assembly, I also ordered a stainless guide rod and spring assembly. I must say that I trust and would put this gun up against the Glock I own and rate them as equals to each other in all ways except initial price. I have upgraded the Glock trigger, recoil spring assembly, and slide take down lever also in the same manner. I might add that I also polished the contact areas of the wife's Taurus PT111 G2 and installed the aftermarket stainless guide rod assembly in it as I share your and other peoples concerns about the plastic guide rod assemblies.
Ben Workman Sound like you made the SD into an even better pistol!
Ben Workman have had my Sd9ve for about a year and have not had any issues but after reading the comments I will definitely order that stainless guide rod spring assembly and will definitely look into getting a good glock too😁👍
Thank you for the great video I bought this as a first pistol and fell in love with it. I was scared to disassemble it to clean but this video makes me so much more confident.
I am glad to help and that is why I make them. Thank you!
This was my mom's first gun she just got one the cleaning video you showed she done it step-by-step and clean the gun with no problems without me having to show her I want to say thank you

Thanks so much for the video.
It was very informative.
I learned a lot about my 9mm.
This is my first gun and you really taught me a lot.

Great first pistol. My first was a G17 and I swear I wish I would have saved the 300$ for extra ammo. This is the second pistol my girl has owned her first was a SCCY CPX-1 for PP and her first full size was the SD9VE. She even thought it looks better than the Glock.
Great overview. Relatively new gun owner, and a good buddy (who is a cop) takes the care you do with every weapon he owns. Much appreciated.
Thanks for watching!
Just bought my new Smith and Wesson 9mm SD9 VE with the tact light. Those tips were helpful. Thanks. You earned my sub.
Steve Anderson Glad to help and welcome to the channel!
This is actually my first pistol and I learned a lot for cleaning my gun thanks too you :)
Thanks for watching!
I own 3 pistols, a sd40ve, a Glock 19 Gen 3, and I just bought myself a glock 19x. On all 3 of these pistols I take out the firing pin and clean out the channel every time I fire them. It's very easy and eliminates chances of light primer strikes. I've taken some pretty good size Chunks of brass shavings out of there after a single range trip. Do t be scared to detail strip the sd9ve. If you're even moderately mechanically inclined it's so easy. If I had only 40 seconds to clean a striker-fired pistol. I would clean the feed ramp, chamber, and firing pin Channel. The three most important parts in my opinion
Joe S. Yeah, I need to expand to include the pin channel and you are right, it is a good thing to do.
The brushes are called "Tube" brushes, all three typs: stainless, brass, and poly I found on Amazon. If anyone has addressed this already, I apologize. I bought an SD9ve on friday, and couldn't hit the target. Got home, and the rear sight was aligned with the right side rail. I tapped into dead center, and hopefully that will work. I will be going to the range next week.
.....................................................................................................
Great video, subbed. Thanks Travis, for what you do here.
Thanks for watching! That is nuts that the rear sight was off that much. Once your sights are centered, the pistol will be very accurate. Thank you for the information about the brushes, too!
I have the same problem with my SD9ve the sights seemed like there were off. Did that seem to work adjusting the sights?
@@rpres65 mine was dead on from the factory but they rush these out so quick I wouldn't be surprised if the sights are off a little.
Most likely due to user error. Need to target practice more
Just purchase this, my 1st firearm about a week ago, still waiting for it, definitely will be watching this video a lot... Very helpful

Daaang I remember that pen. That’s a good pen, I still have mine
Excellent video. Looking to buy sd9 as first pistol and found disassembly and cleaning instructions very thorough and well demonstrated.
Myranda Duran-Adams The SD9VE is s great first pistol. I'm glad this video was helpful! Toughest part about the SD9VE is pulling down the takedown buttons down, they are small for me but with enough practice, disassembly gets easier.
Good video like always. I have a new SD 9 FDE frame model. I took it out the other day and put 60 rounds of mixed ammo through it. Worked great. Was very accurate. Got home and field stripped it and cleaned it. I noticed the round end on The guide rod that sits against the barrel lug looked warped and had a nasty "ding" on the edge. I called Smith and ask if it was normal wear after 60 rounds. They told me don't shot the gun with that rod and they would send me a New one. They kinda hinted maybe I had shot hot ammo through it. 45 rounds were normal loads and 15 were Winchester NATO. I told them surly a SW could handle 15 rounds of that ammo without damage. I have two new factory rods I ordered when I first got this gun just incase I needed them. I have heard of issued with them. So I put one of the new rods in. When I pulled the slide back I could tell the new, unused rod was bent really bad. So I installed the 3rd rod. It seems ok. Called Smith back. Got a different tech. He told me not to worry. Bent, chipped, ratty looking, don't matter as long as the gun works. But he would replace for free any rods I had that I didn't trust. Told me hid personal SD9 had over 10,000 rounds on the original guide rod. Said his guide rod looks horrible. It is normal. SW does say not to usr a metal rod. It voids the warranty and causes issues. He also said he had never heard of any issues with the factory rods. I tol him I had . I think the plastic is too soft. Anyway, I have two new rods on the way. They do have good service. But I was told two different things about what do in two days. One, don't shoot it, , it's normal, don't worry bout it. I respect your opinion. What is your take on this? I do like this gun but this guide rod crap is starting to annoy me.
Jimmie Harris my first SD9VE had a defective guide rod out of the box so I went with an aftermarket steel unit and never looked back. The way I see it is that I would rather lose a warranty and have a gun that functions vs. a pistol that was plagued with FTF and FTE issues. Check out my vids on the SD9 VE to see what I did and my experiences.
travisp11. Thanks for the fast response. My pistol worked great with the factory rod. Even with some 115 gr federal champion that felt really weak. I think the plastic is too soft in these factory rods. I'm gonna try the new one I have and the two new ones that are on the way. What has me wondering is why did one tech say " Don't use the warped, dinged rod." and the other tech says" Its normal. Don't worry". I am thinking about going with a metal rod. But I normally keep my guns all factory.
Jimmie Harris it is a very flimsy plastic that flexes when heated, too.
travisp11. I'll agree. The round part that goes against the barrel lug warped after 60 rounds. I believe this is why it dinged up when I was firing the gun. I inspected the pistol, inside and out before I fired it. The rod wasn't warped or dinged before I fired it. One tech said it'd normal, don't worry. One tech said don't fire the pistol any more with that rod and if it does it again they want ne to send the gun in. I'm sure the gun is fine. The rods are the issue.
travisp11. I've seen a few videos where people ate putting glock 19 factory plastic rods in the SD 9. They seem to be better built and hold up better. Some swear they have no trouble and have shot hundreds of rounds in their SD9's. I'm. Iffy about using parts from other pistols in my guns. . But I have considered it. Its really bad such a nice gun I'd having guide rod issues. I've got mine on me right now. Just got back from running earins. And I do carry around the house a lot too. But I'm getting iffy on trusting this gun.
Awesome video thank you. Sd9ve is my first gun and this video helped me with my first cleaning
Thanks for watching!
NDZ Performance Extended Takedown Levers are amazing. Got mine in Friday and installed it. I absolutely love it. Not so extended that I'm worried about catching anything but perfect enough to grab ahold of it with your fingers. I also got a custom backplate from them. Definitely a nice touch. :)
NDZ makes some great products and that original takedown lever is one of the biggest complaints I hear from viewers of my cleaning video.
This is great to hear. It's always nice to learn about another company to provide options for firearms that we own.
I really like this video. I am planning on purchasing this gun and this video has sealed the deal for me.
Glad to help! Once in a while at the range the side can fail to lock back after emptying a magazine but that only happens if I pull down on it.
Just left the range with my sd40ve and I can truly say that I like this gun after all the bad comments I've read.
It runs just fine. You need to just get used to the trigger but other than that, my SD9VE runs like a champ.
I've shot over 300 rounds. No issues! Good purchase

Dan Palacios Thanks!
You don't need the Apex trigger. Just polish the correct pieces on the frame and slide, and lube the trigger guard and it works perfectly well. Too many people think the first fix is throwing money at something. But that's a bad reaction. A little research and a little work allows you to save the money and make things work perfectly well.
This is true.

I just won this pistol at a raffle this past 4th of july weekend well its the sd9 2.0 pretty much the same gun , and as soon as I got it and got home , me and my 3 boys shot 400 rds thru it without fault, seems to be a all around nice gun , for a price point of $300. I'm definitely going to invest into a few upgrades for it
I really like the revised version. The 2.0 is pretty cool.

@@travisp11 Can you give me the info for the new trigger your putting on this gun? I have seen other reviews on this . And they have said the same thin, they are putting a new on as well. Thank you
@@eddieg70 I thought I wanted to go with an aftermarket trigger but there are two reasons why I decided not to. Because my SD9VE is my bedside gun, I know the gun andI know the trigger. I really didnt want to mess up something that is functional. Also, in terms of liability, for a primary defense weapon I really did not want to lighten up the trigger. With that being said, I have friends that have the APEX trigger kit installed and they love them but you want to keep the original striker spring installed instead of the APEX part simply because the APEX spring can lead to light primer strikes which is something you absolutely dont want. In the end, the APEX kit gives you a better trigger with a pull weight that is similar to stock (so long as you dont mess with the striker spring).

Very nice video. I wanted to thank you for the informative video as I'm a new owner of this gun. I'm new to all this and will go over the video many times just to have it sink in. I'll be checking out some more of your vids. Thank you
You are welcome. Let me know if you have any questions about this pistol. I've owned two now and the one featured in this video serves as our bedside gun. It has been fairly reliable. Only thing to watch for is the gun not holding open on the last round fired. Many times this happens because your grip pulls down on the magazine while holding it with two hands with just enough force that the slide stop is not engaged by the magazine. Other than that, it is a very accurate gun. Check out my range test on it!
Best video for the takedown I’ve seen yet. Appreciate it.
Gideon Retherford Thanks! I don't get a lot of views on my cleaning videos but I actually enjoy making them! I hope it helps!

so i found that there is an update to this pistol to what I have - your has the hole for the "one in the chamber" mine has a slide that pops up. The differences on the sd9ve that have the slide that pops up is that the mechanism does NOT cock upon loading for break down with out a mag. the mag has to be present to rack the slide and thus complete the take down... another difference on the same subject includes not automatically loading one into the chamber and setting itself when its held back and the mag is inserted - with this one you have to actuate the slide release. I wonder if this is something I can change or not, but made the initial break down very difficult doing exactly what you and others have showed for break down, the slide would just not come off (of course the trigger needs to be actuated and mine is not actuating that trigger with out the mag... Thanks again for the video, got through cleaning her and breaking her down for the first time, I am waiting on the break down lever and the guide rod to arrive now so i can install that and the trigger update here this week... ill check your videos out on that
This is good information. I may need to get ahold of one of revised models and make a new cleaning video on it. Thank you!
@@travisp11 so I found out that mine is something called a Magazine Disconnect Model which has an additional catch on the sear and may be causing all of the differenced I mentioned before... the Apex trigger reassembly video shows the parts to complete this assembly correctly with this model if anyone needs it...
@@shanemouton7606 good to know!
I purchased one today, but I tried your steps, but found it ALOT easier to take the slide off the frame if the pistol isn't cocked, otherwise, great video and I learned a lot.
Fair enough.
I like the stiffer trigger. Its really smooth though.
True
Good video my only problem is the 2 gunsmiths i use locally swear that the rem oil is the worst stuff for any gun and have been told many times to throw it away and never use it.
I’ve been using it for over 20 years. It is thin when you apply it and I prefer CLP but Remoil has never caused my firearms any issues.
When you first push the bore brush through the barrel, avoid pointing the barrel towards your just cleaned slide as it usually will spray some gunk out the front of the barrel.
True!
The S&W SD40VE is my first pistol and it’s is a beautiful gun for what I payed. As soon as I seen it a couple years ago I knew I had to get it. It suck that when I finally get it can’t find a lot of ammo for it sadly hopefully the ammo shortage is over soon I am enjoying my collection. It sucks that I want to buy more but Cali is starting its one gun a month now how sad that they do this.
Yeah, you came into gun ownership at a rough time. Sorry to hear that but at least you have the pistol and hopefully some ammo.
CA COMPLIANT GUNS WONT BREAKDOWN until u insert a mag, pull trigger, and remove mag then breakdown with tabs.
Good to know. Thanks!
Thanks for pointing out that there is a difference in the California version. My fingers felt that they were falling off from me trying to strip it as he showed it.
YOU SAVED MY FINGER NAIL!
Nope. You have to lock back the slide and push down the magazine lever with your finger or something. It's in the top of the magazine well and it won't push down without the trigger being pulled back
Look at your manual for disassembly instructions
Nice Video i have this same gun but its tan and black its a wonderful gun so far
Awesome!!
This video was very helpful! Thank u sir!!!
Glad to help!
I bought this today as my first gun
You made a pretty good choice!
For anyone out there struggling to get the slide removed.... I found that I was pulling the slide back too far. If you pull it back far enough for the trigger to cock, you've gone too far. After an hour of failure, slid it back just a touch, pulled down tabs.... 1st try...
This is good to know! Thank you!
I absolutely love everything about this gun except it seems hard to take apart for me. I got it from my dad, and he seemed to have the same issue that after pulling the slide back and the tabs down, the slide would only go forward a half an inch. I cant seem to get it to come off completely
Yeah, those tabs are a pain. I believe you can swap out those tabs with larger ones. Check out NDZ performance, Apex gun parts or Lakeline LLC. One of those companies makes them. You also need to make sure the magazine is out of the pistol and that you pull the trigger to release the slide (but be sure the firearm is empty).
@@travisp11 I just found longer slide lock releases on NDZ for like 10 bucks. no brainer, because getting the slide off can be a bit of a bear if you can't get a good grip on the tabs. took me a few times before I was able to do it.
@@ninevoltromeo cool! Their accessories are good!
@@ninevoltromeo thank you for this info, Tommy! I've had the gun for a while, but I've only got it once. It's still oily in the internal areas, but I decided to look into keeping it clean and I had the worst time disassembling this thing!
Definitely going to buy a larger takedown lever. New to marksmanship (first gun), so I was ready to just buy another one! 🤬
You guys are missing a small detail that makes buying extended take down tabs a waste of money and time. First, use your firing hand at the back to move the slide back just an eighth of an inch or so, then once you pull down the take down tabs, just pull the trigger and the slide will come right off. Many people think it's stuck at the point, but after a pull of the trigger it is free. No need to endlessly spend money to fix perceived problems. A little more research saves you a lot of money. The same with the trigger. Everyone says to buy the Apex trigger, but that is also a waste of money. You can polish the internals and lube the trigger guard, and the trigger becomes buttery smooth. A little research goes a long way. Cheers!
Last time I saw the S&W SD9VE for sale in July 2020 was $389, I already have it so I bought the M&P 2.0 Compact. Only issue I had with the SD9VE ? Polymer guide rod warped after 200 rounds, replaced it with a 20lb steel one.
If you check my channel I did a review on the NZD steel guide rod for the SD9VE. It was a great purchase.
The way they did it taking the slide off you can stand there all day doing that and it will not come off you have to pull the trigger after you pull the little Clips on the side down to get the slide off
Thank you..
Nice Cleaning vid as like the way you use Rem oil since it is such a light oil...Good stuff...
I've cleaned at least 30 different pistols alone in my life and I can't break this damn gun down. Add that to the fact it consistently shoots lower than any pistol I've ever shot and this thing is bound for a creek bed
Consider replacement sights.
This sd9ve is actually my first pistol
Good choice!
