Planet Zoo Beta - Chinese Black Bear Habitat Speed Build

  • Let's build a Formosan Black Bear exhibit with custom Chinese theming including a meticulously built moon bridge and custom roofs, Silv thought. It'll be fun, Silv thought.
...alright, despite the struggles of making roof sets with thousands of tiny pieces, I enjoyed this habitat build. Not sure to what extent I succeeded in my mission to balance authentic nature for the animal and authentic culture for the guests - the habitat is slightly too distant from much of the paths, guest/animal interaction is limited and I really overestimated just how small the female bears are - but this is definitely my personal fave build of the Beta. And it was a good way to really get to know the detailing potential of some of the game's scenery pieces; although here's to hoping (and predicting) that the full release will feature a complete set of Far East Asian building pieces.
And with that said, thanks for the beta Frontier, and thank you all for watching this short series. We'll meet again at the game's release :)

I love how humble you are in respecting different cultures' structures and history behind!!! As a Chinese, you are on point with the different aims of Chinese and Japanese gardens. It clearly shows that you have done research, and your work shows that you have done an awesome job re-creating it. You are by far my favorite structural designer in any design building game!

This is CRAZY! This video got recommended and all I expected was a decent, beautiful built of a zoo that I can watch whilst having my lunch break - Instead I pretty much stopped eating half way through, because this is just MAGNIFICENT!! Kudos to that patience and talent with this work. That detail! That beauty in the terrain! You sir have just earned yourself a new subscriber.

I definitely think you did an absolutely fantastic job making it look authentically Asian. Chinese, Korean, and Japanese culture are very heavily inspired by each other, especially during the very first millennium AD. So I don’t think you need to worry toooo much about making sure it’s “Chinese enough” I think it’s wonderful

This video was especially special for me as I not only lived for a year in Taiwan, but I actually had the chance to visit the Formosan Aboriginal Village while I was living there. Taiwan is especially unique because parts of the country also have lots of Japanese architecture as well. Listening to you talk about all this brought back good memories for me. Really well done, keep up the good work :)

Speaking as a Hongkonger, the Chinese garden is awesome. Newer gardens in Taiwan, Korea, and Japan sometimes will borrow themes from each other. So don't worry about the foliage! Less so for Hong Kong, we don't build Chinese gardens so often as we used to. Not sure about China.

Reference images are always your friend. I also find that using Google Earth and flying over zoos gives you a great sense of the scale things should be and how to lay out your path work. You can "visit" many zoos around the world and notice some cool patterns with how they cluster exhibits and staff buildings together.

  • @Phendrena

Your knowledge of the culture you are inspired by is exemplary and the philosophy to which you have been designing and creating enclosures and exhibits is, quite frankly, stunning. Of all the various Planet RUclipsrs out there you approach creation with more respect and realism than would be expected in a game. I salute you for this and salivate with anticipation for the full release next month.

Fun fact about Formosan Aboriginal Culture Village, it's started like an exhibit to show and educate visitors about Native Taiwanese Tribe, and then they decide to turn in into a theme park.
That Vekoma SLC is theme with Mayan style which looks really cool! Still painful to ride tho :/

One thing to add is that most Chinese garden buildings will have seats along the fences.
Also the last shot with the snowy bridge looks really like one of the 10 famous scenes in Western Lake in Hangzhou (西湖十景) Broken Bridge Thin Snow (斷橋殘雪) to be exact. (Altho your bridge isn't broken).

Gorgeous!!! You never fail to amaze. I adore the moon bridge. Regardless of the current happenings involving China, the architecture there is beautiful.
I very much approve of your choice to use the buildings as an accent to the main attraction, the animals and their habitat. Hearing about those tigers is heartbreaking. I definitely hate when the animals are used as decoration and their wellfare is neglected as a consequence. Haven't the time to finish the whole episode, but from how far I got, it looks GORGEOUS.

The word "Formosa" doesn't actually have any specific link with Taiwanese indigenous people. It's just used descriptively to denote geographically where they are from. "Formosa" was the name given to the island of Taiwan by Portuguese colonists (Ilha de Formosa, or "island of beauty"). The word, if anything, actually has more European colonialist connotations rather than links to Austronesian Taiwanese indigenous culture. As the political status of the nation of Taiwan (Republic of China) is somewhat controversial, the word "Formosan" is often used to describe things from the physical geographical landmass, including flora and fauna.

    This is certainly amazing!
    I love this build!
I just have some things I'd like to address, as a Chinese myself, I feel like for the "toilet stall" building, the wood part just below the brick, should be higher a little, it looks a little too big.
And just less white in general for the trims and stuff, I'm not sure if you can change the colors of the trim and also probably there's a lack of chinese contents, it would probably be hard to achieve in the beta.
Also the trim should be lower, It feels too high.
Please don't take this as an insult or some sort!
I understand that there's a lack of chinese builds etc or how there's no other substitute.
I cannot wait to see more of your builds when the game finally release :D

Very happy you mentioned pairi daiza. I understand your problem with the park. And indeed the enclosure with the white tigers is bad, but i guess you can find in every zoo bad enclosures. But they have also high end enclosures for other species and still keep the thematisation high.
Ps: normally this winter will open a more natural bengal tiger exhibit with much more space. With real bengal tigers and not these zoo bred white tigers
