    James, I never comment on RUclips stuff, but I just have to say- this is one of the most cogent, thoughtful, and articulate episodes you've ever done. It's clear you have a wealth of knowledge, though not always evident in all your videos. But this is excellent. Very well done

    I am a big fan of Cape Dory boats for many reasons..thick hulls, all lead ballast inside the hull, plenty of bronze hardware, and one of the best hull shapes..I have sailed all models except for the 40 and 45

    Don't forget that some boats are only partially cored. Solid below the waterline and cored above. My own hull is like this. 6mm skins, 25mm core. Super strong and stiff. Core makes a far stiffer boat than solid glass. Fully agree on comfort of a good off shore boat.

    Good work! I am learning on a ip 27 full keel. You give me more confidence I will have less problems with my "lack for experience." I sail around the Tampa Bay. In good conditions, she holds course without me at the helm. It does suck going backwards. Keep it coming. You should build your own vessel.

    Overhanging transoms come from olden days racing. They create a longer waterline while heeling - and so more speed. And a shorter waterline when upright, so a boat could qualify for a class for smaller, slower boats (that didn't have an overhang) as the classes were set by waterline length.

    I have experienced with some benetau models from about 15 to 10 year ago and don’t like it too much.
    They are noisy and not sailing well leaning over. The wider stern was also a cold place to hang out.
    Before we sailed Bavaria 44 that was 10 years old . So now 20 years old. But that ship ran well.
    It’s was joy to handel. Now a days a sail my friends similar model 38. We always say this shape wis the best for production boats. But now under refit I sail an s shaped half long keel Trintella.. from 1972 .
    These ships do understand water as they are in it and not on it. It has warm central cockpit what produces less motion feedback. The whole ship moves around you what is a very comfortable experience.
    1972 they didn’t wonder about more space but how the boat/ ship would handle in less perfect conditions.
    Just don’t bring so much stuff .. 😊

    Great video. Just like other parts of life, boat designs are all compromises.
    I'll add a point of clarification on the influence of racing and the design of plumb bows (applies to sterns too). The older racing rules (e.g. IOR) rated a boat's legnth at the waterline within their box rule. So, a designer could (and they all did) game the rule by making a short waterline with huge overhangs at both ends. The boats would then be sailed at large heel angles to effectively lengthen the waterline and allow more boat speed. The newer racing rules changed to anticipate this gamesmanship and designs changed accordingly.

  • @FranklinGray

    To me, the keel is the most important part of the boat with rudder second and mast/rigging 3rd. When you are offshore and over 1,000 miles from any land and the wind picks up and the waves start getting big, speed is the last thing from your mind. What is on your mind is will the boat hold up.
    Encapsulated keels are best by far, but it is hard to find a fin or long fin encapsulated. Keel boxes (he called them stubs) are a decent compromise. None of the European boat makers use a keel box, but American ones did (Hunter and Catalina). None of them have protected rudders though. I would never take a European production boat across an ocean even though many do every year. They are just taking a risk I prefer to avoid because I know there are better options.
    I learned the hard way that hull shape, especially in front of the keel, is very important. My 1996 Hunter 376 that I sailed all over the place, had a flat spot in front of the keel. That little flat spot did two things: 1) gave it the ability to plain a little and go faster than hullspeed 2) Made the pounding up wind in big seas dreadful. I have learned that being comfortable when you are out there and having full confidence in your boat is much better than speed.

    Hi, what's your opinion about the sailboats with a leeboard instead of any other type of keel?

  • @markthomasson5077
    @markthomasson5077 11 часов назад

    Sure you have far more experience than me…but not sure of all your views.
    Solid glass boats..surely they don’t take days to mould? I thought it was a single process, hence the large labour force. And isn’t the material, and disposals cost of vacuum bagging more, even if it takes less resin?
    A full metal keel can be just as strong as an encapsulated, or stub keel, it is just a matter of design specification.
    Traditional shaped hulls often hobby horse upwind, more modern designs less so.
    Traditional hull forms heal a lot more.
    If caught in a serious offshore gale you may opt to run with it, a modern design is much more stable and safe, speed is your friend. Ideally you stay just in front of the wave face (ocean wave do around 15knts) Traditional hulls will get caught by the wave, thrown forwards and broach, even roll.
    Do any boats have a fore cabin you can use upwind?
    Things not mentioned.
    If you have a collision, a good number of watertight bulkheads are essential. (And they need to be shut…ask the owner of the Bayesian)
    Stern hung rudders are best, can be repaired, even at sea. And a collision should not breach the hull.
    Rigs, are you going to discuss another time? Mast head rigs are so much better for cruising boats, swept back stays are a pain, and a danger as you can’t spill wind the same.
    (Ps I have sailed in monohulls but am a multi hull guy)

    The best keel is a long fin encapsulated keel that is NOT split in 2 and filled with lead, not iron. Whitby 55 has it. Don't know of anybody else.

  • @fifi23o5
    @fifi23o5 4 часа назад +1

    Mostly, I like the video, but you need to learn the terms!
    Glass fibre reinforsed resin is composite material. What you call "composite" is a cored or sandwich material.
    When you're talking about vakuum bagging, you actually mean vakuum infusion. Two different things.
    Some might say I'm anal or cherrypicking, but differences are big and relevant, besides it can have an impact on credibility.

    As a yachtmaster you should have learned that twin rudder boats easy to maneuver you just need to give them little more speed to steer, but old school boats you could spin in a pinch using prop walk and little kicks of thrust without ANY speed at all.

    • @PaulBKal
      @PaulBKal 8 часов назад

      Speed in a marina. Just what everyone needs. Not!
      Single rudder boats are able to be more prudently maneuvered in confined waters at lower speeds because the propellor directing thrust past the rudder allows for instant helm response under power.

    • @DG-jq2jq
      @DG-jq2jq 6 часов назад

      @@PaulBKal
      Al you need is 2 kTs it's not hitting full thrust.
      Twin rubber boats steer well in the marina as well as in the sea.
      And, you actually can go astern
      Don't make a drama please.

    well i know one thing if you want to have a real true blue water boat you need to start with a steel or aluminum hull first for a real true blue water boat anything else is a complete fail. for only steel or aluminum hull go to arctic or the antarctica for no fiberglass hulls are not able go to at all. if you do not belive me well i do not care look it up for yoru selfs pluse what would you want any ways when you run into somthing a fiberglass hull or one made out of steel or aluminum hull if its me i would pick steel or aluminum hull not a fiberglass hull. oh ya they are now starting to make catamarans out of aluminum now you may want to ask your self why now to start making catamarans out of aluminum for so long they been only making them out of fiberglass hulls.
