In this free drum lesson, I want to give you the FULL free PDF Drum Chart to the song “Africa” by TOTO, featuring the drumming of Jeff Porcaro.
This has been requested from me for many years now, and the only reason I haven’t included it already was because of the difference between the recorded and the live version. So for this chart I’ve also included notes on how Jeff played it live as well.
The recording uses lots of percussion, shakers and congas to build up the drum track. The pattern that Jeff played on the recording is actually quite sparse giving room for all the other instruments…a very mature and professional choice. No wonder Jeff Porcaro is considered one of the greatest drummers of all time. Enjoy!

I like the way you give options to play the parts. I read that Jeff and a percussionist sat in front of each other and jammed to this groove. than they picked a favorite part and made a loop.

Brave choice of song. Epic. To quote the 'Art of Drumming ' programme. 'Drummers have been fascinated with the Pecaro shuffle on Rosanne for 40 years' 'Africa' is just as challanging. Well done, glad to see it 'warts and all' including mistakes. Most instructors dont.

Great lesson(s)! Although, you can hear clearly that he's playing 8th-notes on the ride in the choruses and I believe in the verses, also in the music video he's playing eightnotes (putting in 16-notes also) :)

Eh? I'm talking about how Jeff plays if live. There is a video of him with TOTO on stage paying Africa back in the day.
