Here's a really cool drum fill that Jeff Porcaro played for the song "Africa" with the rock band Toto. It's a classic fill with lots of space, and I think you'll have fun with it!
These videos are great.
Love Toto's Africa. Who doesn't?
Thanks Mike. Great to see you on Drumeo. Always enjoy the clarity and usability of your online lessons.
Mike's such a great teacher, would love to see videos of him teaching advanced concepts
one of the best sounding fills
Thank you, very well explained and getting directly to playing it. Was having trouble with these two fills, gonna try them out ASAP.
You are doing the fills correct. And I'm practicing hard to do them correct myself. Thank you so much for your public video lesson.
Superb and awesome teaching Mike thank you.
Love this video, thank you very much. Greetings from Venezuela.
GREAT JOB!! IT WAS VERY NICE TO WATCH YOU!
Thanks Mike! You made this so easy to follow.
simple fill , but a beautiful one! thank you guys!!
gracias mil gracias por aver subido este video.drumeo
Love this drumeo. Nice one. Keep it up
Nice drum teacher .... easy to learn .. looking forward for some more videos ..
Gostei. Explicação muito boa e fiel à transcrição original
Thx you so much!!!! Greetings from germany Christoph 👏👏👏👏👏
Great teacher . Thank you very much for your video.
Thanks man. That was great teaching. Much appreciated!
Great cool lesson ! Thanks
Thank you so much. Very well explained
This is incorrect. The bass drum part is a dotted 8th note followed by 2 16ths. The hihat part is groups of 3 16ths resting the other 16th note of the barre. Good video potentially. How can this have been missed however?
Watch Jeff play it live, he played it as a constant stream of 16th notes, as he was known to do.
I love this song since the first time I heard it. Just beautiful!
Nicely done!
Great Lesson.. Thank you
Nice lesson thanks. The rhythm of the fill seems to be inspired by a typical motif found in many African rhythms, such as Makossa. Jeff Porcaro probably used it to add an African taste in this song.
Great lesson!👍
Jeff is a Deity! 🙌🏻 🙏🏼!
Mike I love the way you break things down and explain the fundamental I enjoy all your lessons thanks to you I now playing paradiddles totally different it now sounds musical thank you

q
Thank you very much for this video
9:45 samba groove in bass drum / fill idea over 3:2 rumba clave
Alhamdulillah, ada kemanisan dc2 tuan.
Mantiaeppp 👍
Kick sounds awesome
Well done!!! 😉
Nice!!
Dear Drumeo,
Dear Mr. Michalkow,
Thank you for this great lesson!
I'm a German drummer and I love the Band Toto. But my favourite drummer is Mr. Simon Phillips (Toto, too).
If you make more Toto-Lessons, I would love to watch them.
Cool Songs are e.g. "Bottom Of Your Soul" (especial the octoban stuff), "Stop Loving you", "Pamela" and "St. George And The Dragon".
Hope you got some ideas for the next lessons.
Greetings from Germany!
racedrummer1 man, I was there for an hour of those dammed 5 strokes on Pamela yesterday. Friggin Jeff, lol. And another hour for the perfect splashy hats.
Great!
Nice lesson. That snare thou
Thanks a lot man
Nice!
Thanks Mike 👍
Thanks a lot you are a great instructor but could you do a tutorial on how to play rosanna by toto as well
Cheerio:)
Hey Mike,
Great lessons!
For quite while now I'm trying to find out how to get the sound of Jeff Porcaro in this song. His tom during this fill sound amazing. Do you know how to get this sound?
This guy mike is one of the easiest to follow drumteachers ive ever seen..great explanation
I don’t have house to have a drum kit. I live in a condo so what do you recommend for equipment? Second, how does a band form?
Great lesson! Really like it. But isn't the full bar fill rhythmically like a rumba clave?
No Entiendo Un Carajo el inglés pero amo la Canción África y amo
el Ritmo de Percusión que tiene.
Y quiero Practicarlo...
Thanks _ U !!!
Thank you.
Super
Once you got this beat, try to play the one which Simon Phillips plays with Toto (the second snare hit comes in the "e" of the third beat), it seems easy to play, but it recquires some independence.
Awesome!! This is exactly how you learn to tap dance. I found this on Scott Adam’s (creator of Dilbert comic) RUclips channel play list. Ha ha!
Hello, great explanation although i think there is only one beat on kick first then following two, so ta, tata, ta, tata.
I just say because I know the song Africa and I have learned watching to Jeff ‘s videos for a long time.
不错
Don't mean to be over critical guys, but you may check the kick pattern...only one down downbeat at the top of each bar. Good job on your channel though. I just uploaded a cover of this tune and it was fresh on my head. Much love friends.
true... I couldn't find any version with this bossa kick pattern.
Yes and that 1 then 2 bass drum pattern remains throughout the fill itself. Makes for a much better feel than demonstrated here
Little Drummer Channel I'd choose to be slick.if I had a better foot or were Jeff and missing a conga player. Play the conga part on your foot. so, "1, uh 2, 3 e, a 4." I think.
Paiste and Yamaha ! Yes!
It was a simple fill, but it was amazing in the song
Great Lesson!!
I' ll try to practice with your video. Great job!
Ayyy lmao
I bless the rains down in Africa :-D
thank you
Best teacher great drummer - no doubt ! 👍
Are the mid and low toms both 14" ??
drumeo what's the name of that program?.....please
I think I heard the fills were added after initial drum track.
What about the beat in the refrain? Same as verse?
hey you're so cool man
The beat slowed down is woman of the world by aerosmith or sounds like it
first time i clap my hand on a beat so hard. first time that i learn a beat so quickly.
Jared needs to learn to play fills like this.
I read an article many years ago on the creation of the drum tracks for the song "Africa". They created many tracks of the different drum elements one by one for 10 minutes or so. Then they went and found the best section that they liked and then cut that out and made a continuous loop of it. I believe all of the drum fills were added in afterwards on top of that loop.
Quick note: I believe he need to retune his voice since the resonant snare buzz is quite prominent during the explanations. Easier to retune the snare though.
That synthetic buzz while talking is driving me crazy
Name of the drum beat?
Nice Video! But Mr Porcaro had 5 toms right?
Maybe there is a bug on my ear... But im hearing different things on the hats and bassdrum. In the hats like triplets, and bass is 1kick then 2kicks and the 3dr kick goes with the snare (that is the tricky one for me). Well im not a musucian, and dont know shit about notes and music but that is what i heard in the song.
However, this pattern can be also right. But is not what Porcaro does i think
Randy Severino that's what he's doing? What'd I miss?
@@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 first of all, AMAZING NAME DUDE lol. second, he's actually playing patterns of two on the bass drum every time instead of the 1+2 pattern. It's supposed to be "ONE e and A TWO e and a THREE e and A FOUR e and a", but he's playing an additional kick on the A before THREE. That's what Gabriel is talking about and it really bothers me... why would they make an educational video on Africa and get the kick pattern wrong?
This is the way tutorial should be
can the 16th also been played with 2 hands?
Yes it could be but Jeff played it with the right hand, his signature groove (other than the Rosanna shuffle) I’d say, but I just say it doesn’t give the same feel but it does work just the same bud👍🏻
Миша Михалков?
👌👌👌👌
Nuuuu 9:47 maior samba, quase um pagodão
I like dremeo védéo :D
I'm confused. Is it 93 or 95 BPM? It was said that tempo was 93 BPM. The whole fill, second time, at tempo was 95 BPM.
See why I'm confused?
I always heard it as quarter note triplets
action starts at 1:45 guys.
They should add music at the end
I'd love to start drumming but i can't find a decent instructor where i live :(
Highly recommend online lessons (although, after all this time, you may be sorted 😂)
which snare is he using?
his snare...
Mark Kerr hahaha smartass
phil3636 I guess it's the TAMA LMP1465F-SEN Sound Lab Snare. I've got the same model, so realized the wood hoops of his snare drum immedeately :P
Link that brings you to the snare drum:
www.thomann.de/de/tama_lmp1465f_sen_sound_lab_snare.htm
which headphones does he use?
In-ear monitors, it doesn't really matter wich brand, can be Shure, Earsonics, Sennheiser or a lot more.
Was I rushing or was I dragging?
+Jacopo Mascherini [Sarcastic laughing]...You serious?
You don't know? well, gtfo then. lolololol!
both at the same time.
I got PTSD watching that movie.
It was a quote from a movie dumbass
