I remember when this first came out, a friend was playing it on the radio, that first verse "Begin the day with a friendly voice" was just beautiful, positive energy.
This is a song to make you think about how music has been raped by corporations stealing money from all of us. It's to be taken seriously. It's not a pleasant ditty. It's a cry for reason!
I am 51 years old and just got interested in Rush how did I miss this excellent music for that long. The music is excellent and the lyrics are even better
Same here at age 57. Maybe Rush was too far ahead of us in our younger days. Perhaps we just had to mature a bit to understand why their music is so amazing. At least that's the case for me!
I feel the same, but it's like they are underrated, and they aren't even rated that bad , if that makes sense. They don't quite get the credit they deserve
Right there with ya. Stuff I literally hadn't heard in 25 years...basically caress and farewell.. I still know every note lyric, and time shift by heart......really surprised me its all still in there..... Still lose my shit a little bit randomly watching younger Neil being awesome...
This song more than any other always makes me believe in the freedom of music even with all the BS it must overcome in the commercial department. Rush did it their way and never compromised their art. True musicians and I thank God for them.
RIP Neil Peart. September 12, 1952 - January 7, 2020 (Age 67). He is and always will be the best drummer in the world. Nobody can't even come close to matching his style. The king of the drumming world. I grew up spending countless hours listening to Rush songs on MTV and Stereo Panama radio station from 1984- 1991. He wrote the lyrics by adding a unique philosophy and strong messages that shaped my teenage years. Great nostalgia. Neil Peart you will remain forever closer to the heart of all Rush fans worldwide ! You now one with the spirit of radio !
Well said! I lived it too. So many memories and great times of a different era. No sampling or Auto tune bullshit, just honest kick ass rock. You will be missed Professor.
I am struck by the clarity of this recording. You can hear the individual instruments all the way through. The high hat, guitar, bass. And then the lyrics take over. "All this machinery making modern music" prophetic.
Man, I only found out about Rush a couple days ago and holy shit this is an amazing song, it’s a perfect representation of modern music and it’s integrity/value! I love this song just a little too much and I’m glad that Neil will be known for beautiful songs like this. The dude is a drum/lyrical legend and I wish I could’ve had the chance to see these guys together in the good old days. Rest In Peace Neil, I hope that wherever you are that you’re happy and at peace.
All this machinery making modern music can spill the open hearted. Not so coldly charted , It's really just the question of your honesty, yeah, your honesty, One likes to believe in the freedom of music. But glittering prizes and endless compromises, shatter the illusion of integrity yeah. So wonderfully, magically, poetically written. Theirs no one else like Neil.
Spirit of Radio 44years ago when I first heard it in 1979 still unmatched by any song, technology, or otherwise. Listen to it when you feel good and want to dream like you're on a spaceship what it feels like. For me the greatest song ever written.....still.
You know what the great thing about Neil Peart is? It's, although he's the perhaps the greatest drummer of all time, I allways think of him first as a fine human being. May he be remembered forever.
Rush came along at a time that wasn't ready to embrace their genius while embracing the genius of their contemporary rivals who were changing Music forever! Fly by night was well received but by the time Permanent Wave came around the world was digesting the loss of some Icons of music like Elvis, John Bonham, John Lennon ...etc. The radio was still pushing the 3 minute song with some notable exceptions so it would be a few years before alot of people gave them a long hard look! Then there they were nestled in the midst of the Rock and Roll Revolution Forever and a must have for party goers in the late 70's and early 80's. That is just from my own take on a time in my own life that was gifted with the best music of all time! Please don't hammer me with facts and dates as this is just my fond humble remembrances and opinion, Rush has been in my own collection since Fly By Night in 1974 !I loved the HOF induction and Concert! RIP Neal Peart Rush fans everywhere will mourn your passing.
All this machinery making modern music can still be open hearted, but no one can ever hope to measure up to you, Neil Peart. You are the Spirit of the Radio now.
A pioneer who travels from perception, through deception and arrives at inception is proof that the best things in life are fee as is the human spirit 🙏👍❤️😊😎❤️
This song speaks so strongly to who Rush is! They don't cut corners to appeal to the masses and do it their own way. SCREW the rock n roll hall of fame!!!!!!! I guess the adoration of millions of fans worldwide will have to do.
I love the lyrics of this song. *"Begin the day with a friendly voice, a companion unobtrusive. Plays that song that's so elusive and the magic music makes your morning mood."* Awesome lyrics!
This band has amazing music and lyrics. I've been listening to them since I was a child, and the music never gets old. They didn't get much attention because they didn't allow the greedy music industry to tarnish their message of music. I could easily live without TV as long as I've got great music. It's sad to watch today's generation get plugged into the computers and television, and have no idea what it's like to listen to, and actually hear, the beauty of great music.
One of the most underrated bands of all time... been listening to them since I was a ten year old back in 1980... thanks to my older brother for introducing me to them... its what they are for.. older brothers...
Such an incredibly rich tone from Geddy's bass. I love how you can hear it in literally every one of their songs. Always loved their production quality.
I just started listening again cause I couldn't get through a song without crying. Im better now but still get misty. I've been listening to Rush for 35 years.

I was lucky enough to see Rush 3 times each tour since the Permanent Waves album came out. My favorite tour was the Signals and the Moving Pictures tour!!! It`s so hard to believe that`s it`s coming on 5 years since they last toured.. God Bless you Neil !!
Que mùsicos tan virtuosos cada uno con su instrumento, es muy placentero escuchar la melodìa y energía que transmite el ritmo. Son de los mejores. saludos desde colombia.
Loved these guys for years. Seen 'em in '85 & '02. Always knew Peart was THE drummer and their lyricist, but until I heard and read the words together I never really fullyappreciated Peart's lyrical skill. Thanks for posting this in this format.
Great job, but a couple of things are wrong in the lyrics here. "plays that song that is so elusive (not illusive")" and more importantly "FATHER SPIRIT every lingers..." Father Spirit was a local radio station where the guys in Rush lived in Canada. :) Ms. Frank
I remember being a kid and going to the library HOPING that the album wouldn’t be checked out, and that it had the lyrics, too! Kids these days! They’ve don’t know how easy it is now - lol - RIP Neal Peart, astonishingly talented.
Late 70s early 80s.. I was 16 in 1976 and this album and other Rush 8-tracks were there in those muggy days and summer nights.. One of the bands and songs playing in the background of our lives.. Even then I knew they were different.. I listen now and it brings me back there. . Sometimes I wish I was back there...
I was blessed to see these three men live at Blossom. Akron, Ohio, in 2010ish snakes and arrows tour. So much indesputible talent and just the absolute, most explosive concert I've ever been to. Sounds so great live, in fact it's so exact, their music sounds just as good as it does on the radio.. except better because its LOUDER
I remember when this first came out, a friend was playing it on the radio, that first verse "Begin the day with a friendly voice" was just beautiful, positive energy.
And I was so happy to see that radio/music is acknowledged as an important part of our lives❤

God of time signature but still make their song easy listening and catchy even for the next decade
I agree wholeheartedly.
When this album came out they were fuckin amazing. No one ever sounded like this. Best power trio in history, no contest.
Jan. 3, 2019, still loving this masterpiece. Happy New Year from Lille, France !
I was lucky enough to see Rush 3 times each tour since the Permanent Waves album came out. My favorite tour was the Signals and the Moving Pictures tour!!! It`s so hard to believe that`s it`s coming on 5 years since they last toured.. God Bless you Neil !!
The drum solo by Neil Peart in the
2112 live album was EPIC !!! 🤪🎧🥁
It's hard to believe this song is even real! Incredible!!
:) Ms. Frank
I just happen to have 2 pair of Neail's sticks 1 new 1used primark 747
This song has such BEAUTIFUL imagery! Lovely.
Straight up classic song.... one of the all time best.
I remember being a kid and going to the library HOPING that the album wouldn’t be checked out, and that it had the lyrics, too!
Kids these days! They’ve don’t know how easy it is now - lol - RIP Neal Peart, astonishingly talented.
imagine being in Peart's brain for a single moment, the synaptic surges must be almost nuclear.
No kidding !!!
This is a loveletter to all aspiring musician
RIP Neil this ones for you 🍺
The Masters at Work ,beautiful music ,amazing lyrics 💫🎸💫🎸
3:35 Am I the only one who thinks that transition is the most underrated part of the song?
TRANSITION IS ONE OF THE WORDS I MISSED IN MY COMMENT ABOVE
Those 5 seconds are unquestionably the best part of the song.
I agree, however, it should be noted that it is basically a repeat of what they play at around 0:15-20 to start off the song.
Randsurfer
Randsurfer Its context is a large part of why it's so great though.
Late 70s early 80s.. I was 16 in 1976 and this album and other Rush
8-tracks were there in those muggy days and summer nights..
One of the bands and songs playing in the background of our lives..
Even then I knew they were different.. I listen now and it brings me back there. . Sometimes I wish I was back there...
i love this fucking song.makes me feel good
I love it too! 😃
shawn noble Amen to that
I was blessed to see these three men live at Blossom. Akron, Ohio, in 2010ish snakes and arrows tour. So much indesputible talent and just the absolute, most explosive concert I've ever been to. Sounds so great live, in fact it's so exact, their music sounds just as good as it does on the radio.. except better because its LOUDER
