A lot of people would say that only Neil Peart could play this complicated piece of music. Hell, listen to it, he was leading ! Mr. Peart will never be duplicated.
I saw them live in '82 I believe it was, during their Grace Under Pressure tour. They had a large projector screen above the stage and they showed a very cool animated video of the story as told in the song: the car, the chase, the double-wide air cars, the one-lane bridge. I don't know if that video was ever made available to the general public but I hope someday it might show up on youtube.
yep. i see the whole thing. driving through fields of wheat, the sun shining. i can even smell the oil when listening. and when the air cars come you can feel your heart start to race from the danger. simply perfect song.
Exactly. It seems we’re seeing the beginnings of a possible forced transition from combustion engines to “alternative “ sources-some of it compelled by law.
"Red Barchetta" is, in my opinion, about as close to songwriting perfection--the synergistic marriage of great lyrics to great music--as there is. Arguably, it's the most "cinematic" song in the history of recorded music--certainly in the history of recorded rock music. Incidentally, at the one-lane bridge, 38 people were left stranded at the riverside.
You know you touched on one of the main points that really sets Rush apart from most other bands. During their hall-of-fame induction ceremony, Dave Grohl acknowledged Rush to be one of the most "technical" bands in the business. Their ability to marry music and lyrics the way they do is truly unique.
everytime I hear this great song, it takes me to a red ferrari 250 gto with a sheet over it sitting in a clandestine barn hidden away in the english countryside . I love the place it takes me like no other song. man I love RUSH!
+Sharon Zamarka In case you didn't know, it's kind of a joke that's become a RUclips standard response: The number of people who dislike a given video are lampooned by any aspect of the video that's negative or made to sound negative. In this case, I said, "at the one-lane bridge, 24 people were left stranded at the riverside," equating the 24 people who had given this video a thumbs-down to the intrusive, joy-sucking authorities in the alloy air cars referenced in the lyrics. As of the time of this post, the "thumbs-down" count is currently 33, not 24 when I originally posted above; so, now I should say, "At the one-lane bridge, 33 people were left stranded at the riverside." I hope that's a helpful explanation! ;^)
Crazy how a song from 1981 could actually be completely on track with the not so distant future 30 some odd years later. California is banning all new gas cars by the year 2035. 😢
I'm 15 and a Rush fan, and I could go on about how I'm unfortunate because I never got to see bands like this live in their prime, but it is the ones who were around for it that suffered the most and knew what it was like to go to awesome live shows. You guys had to watch as music decayed, and I hope that somehow music will be returned to it's full glory. "One likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity."
remembering back in the 80s with my 89 Mustang, this song blaring as my mustang flying down the road.........Thank you for ALL the Memories, R.I.P. to the GREATEST DRUMMER EVER
After learning about the loss of Neil I find myself scrolling through and listening to old songs like this one. His music is part of the soundtrack of my life. I weep at the loss of such a gifted artist.
I hope freedom stays around long enough that this song never becomes reality for my kids. . But in some way you know that it already has... The joy of driving an old carburated big block will be lost on future generations..
I'm seriously so tempted to say this is their best, but all well known Rush songs are above and beyond awesome. The other songs some people may not know are great. That's how awesome Rush is.....period.
This is very near the top of my desert island playlist. Like so much of their music, the masterpiece paints such vivid imagery, a lot like "The Trees." Thank God for the Canadian Power Trio.
Coming back to this song because my uncle recently passed away to health problems hes been born with. He's the one who introduced to Rush and to this day this has been our favorite song out of all of them. Without him I would have never known about this masterpiece of a song.
Seen Rush back in 2015 for their last concert in their home town of Toronto Ontario Canada for the first time and it was it was the first time i smoked weed for the first time when I was 17 years old. Greatest day of my life.
Ahhhh. There were hundreds of Great rock groups with good songs but - in my opinion - only a few dozen album masterpieces. Moving Pictures was one. Thanks Rush for the tunes and memories we have associated with them and thanks rushlyrics dude for posting this and other songs. Can't believe bytor and the snowdog was on RUclips 😊
Thank you whoever did these lyrics!! I was blown away by the music and the lyrics I understood. Now I love the songs even more!. Brings back the 80s. Never will be anything like the 80s again. Peace and God bless. Yeshua Hamaschiac ❤️
One of the best bands of all time, It's amazing how much sound these three guys can put out. I've seen them three times live and each time was never disappointed. Great track
I discovered RUSH right before turning 15 with this album, thanks to Tom Sawyer, which got me right away. Then I listened to this track, and read the lyrics, and was mesmerized. This tells a great story. I still remember looking at that slick black album cover and reading the lyrics and just listening to this record. All summer long.
Now that Neil is gone you think more on how on earth he came up with these great and unusual lyrics... stories we listened to, closing our eyes and dreaming.. And still do.
Rush, Geddy Lee, one of the top 5 bassists EVER, and Neil Peart, God's gift to drumming. Coupled with the rich lyrics of modern day philosophers. One of the best bands ever.
Knowing this song is based on a sci-fi story published by *Road and Track* of all magazines just makes it even better. Like, how do you know to look for that one story in Road and Track Magazine. Neil, what a genius. RIP.
They fucking saw the future....the sports car dies more and more each day. Even the new ones are bloated with dozens of useless features a sports car doesn't need.
JustLetMeComment it kills me t hear stuff like that I know I'll never have a car like a barchetta (pronounced Barketta )but its nice knowing they are out there screaming thru the valley making mechanical music if you own a beauty like this please take care of it and when you open it up think of me!
I never hear this song without thinking of one of my younger brothers who introduced it to me. We’d listen to the song together, reveling in the pure joy of music and our brotherhood. Thank you, RUSH, for your part of that wonderful blessing.
This is a beautiful story of American History where Families do things together in a memory they are heart felt and melted for life's traditions in the last name lineage ...Amongst others who hold fast to the same in private or secret ,it's a beautiful story...
I remember my Red Barchetta. A beast of a car. An AMG Mercedes with 540hp. What a fantastic machine she was. Pass anything but a gas station. But I had to let her go. I’ll have another some day. And Rush’s “Red Barchetta “ will be the song I christen her with. Tires will spit gravel again before I die! RIP Neil Peart. Thanks for the music and the memories.
I paid 45 bucks to see them in ATL. in 2007. By far the best 45 bucks I ever spent. Well worth every penny and the very best concert experience ever. Rus Rules!!!
One of the reasons why Rush is among my favorite bands is the imagery they invoke in their songs. They open the imagination in ways few others can. IMO, there's no better example of that than in Red Barchetta. I can picture the whole thing: An overhead pan of "The Wire" at the beginning; fading to the uncle's countryplace at sunrise; the turbine freight blazing through as the protagonist jumps off running to the barn to take that cherry-red Barchetta out for a joyride. So many interwoven shots of the same experience at different perspectives as the driver careens toward the city. The driver cruising around the city, shooting the stuff with the locals, maybe taking some chicks for a ride. Cut to the driver as he weaves through traffic, when suddenly a 1st-person view zooms in on the alloy air car rapidly approaching the Barchetta, forcing the driver to make a dynamic 180° down the other side of the road, now two air cars on that Ferrari's tail. Another 1st-person shot zooms in on the one-lane bridge, which the driver takes, forcing the air cars to crash into each other and leaving them wasted on the side of the road. At sunset, the driver drifts around the same bends as before, back to the barn to cover up the beautiful car, and he reflects with his uncle on his once-a-week day where everything feels wild, free, and unbound by the chains of The Wire, as the sky turns twilit, and filled with stars.
Great driving song ....opening the throttle and enjoying the thrill ..... Very sad news this week... RIP Neil we enjoyed your music and concerts.... the recordings will live on....
Learning last year, upon the passing of Neil Peart, that HE was the creator of RUSH, floored me. I totally respect and love Neil Peart. He created sooo much for us, forever…
I'm sorry that I must correct you here. RUSH was formed in the late 60's. Alas and Geddi joined the band, but the other members left shortly after. Master word smith and drumming professor Niel Elwood Peart didn't join untill 1974 when Rutsy left due to heath reasons as he couldn't tour to promote the first album. This is based off an interview with Geddi being interviewed about his solo album after RUSH "My favorite headache."
Absolute musical brilliance. When a song that is never meant to be sad can actually bring you to tears because it brings you back to your own "Uncle's farm" where you committed your "weekly crimes" ,wow .
i love turning young kids on to rush, you get to see the look come over their face as they start to "get" it. then the frist words are something like, "that drummer is..............god" then ill usally say something like "they are called the holy trinty for a reason"
If my dad didn’t get me into this music I won’t problem be a standard Gen Z idiot. No I have long hair and have adopted the old culture. And I don’t want to brag about this at all and I praise you for doing what you do. Please spread the word of Rush! Neal, Lifeson, and Lee deserve to have their legend live on
I've always been fascinated with artists of every kind. When they spoke, I listened. You cannot interrupt an artist because they're not talking about themselves. Don't judge. You'll miss out on what's real. But one way to know who the real artists are from the industrialists, is one will listen and the other will not. And just because they may be quiet, doesn't mean they're listening. They're either mining, or they are learning. Stay away from the miners, and learn from the hearers. With that said, I know Rush has disclosed certain stories or books some have read, etc... but obviously they listen and learn and they then did their own thing that nobody else has done. Rush has got to be one of the most impressive and useful groups of guys I've ever listened to.
THIS BAND RUSH IS SO AWSOME.. IT IS MY FAVORATE BAND OF ALL TIMES.. THIER BEST ALBLUM IS 2112 OVERTURE ... FOR A THREE MAN BAND .. THEY SURE PUT OUT ALOT OF SOUND.. THEY HAVE BEEN BLESSE.. IF YOU EVER HAVE A CHANCE TOO SEE THEM.. GO DO IT !!!!!
The day I make enough money, many rush songs will Adorn the billboards of my hometown, these guys can get you through any day, and the whole world must read some or their wisdom... Wow! These guys are galaxies away in terms of how legend they are especially for their friendship! This music is just a sonic manifestation of that friendship... These guys teach me everyday how to be good human being.
I am only 12 and I love this song. I see the "motor law" becoming more and more of a real thing each day. Might never be able to scream down a valley backfiring and shifting. Makes me sad.
Emma Lilienthal you play violin? well that's not a regular Rush instrument but you can learn to play "Losing It" and all of Clockwork Angels album since they both feature violin.
Its simply perfect, not acomma out of place. The images ar so vivid, the metaphores so real you just can step inside the vehicle and live it all song long. A real masterpiece.
I can now see a time in this world where this could happen, all electric cars poking along at 20 mph, and a rebel roaring down the road at 100 mph. They are taking our freedoms away from us, even the ability to drive ourself around. The cars will drive us. All autonomy will be gone. I wish I had an uncle with a red Barchetta! Jesus is coming soon be ready, be saved! Our redemption draws nigh! God bless everyone!😊🕊🔥💖✝️💕❤️
What I think is so great about this song , is that we all have or had a Red Barchetta in our lives at one time or another, that has made us feel just like the guy in the song, and Hat's off to Rush for writing a song that makes us feel that way !!!
The idea for this song came from a one page story from Car and Driver (maybe early 70's) about future cars that were "safety cars" all others were outlawed.
panda44r As Bernard says it was Richard Foster. I saw and interview with Mr.Peart in which he talked about having gotten together recently with Mr. Foster for a few days of spirited sport riding in the eastern U.S.. How cool would that be?
Okay, for those 18 who gave this cerebral video a look see with a negative rating; with an advanced hint to the message, why click on it? For the rest of us, Rush shall always be credited with m intellectual awakenings.
One of the only songs I know that can play a whole movie in your mind and still be good music. The song is a story. It sounds like a really good song but listen. Let the story play in your head . If not still a a damp good tune period..............
One of my all time favorites! Been listening to Rush since my older brother introduced me in my EARLY teens. Thank you, brother! Btw...I am soon to be 49.
I personally think that pretty much every RUSH tune could be released today and do just as well if not better then it did back in the day(commercially speaking)
I would argue this is one of the best songs ever recorded
Too true.Perfect song in every way.

There are no flaws!!!

This was on my short list of songs I wanted to hear from them after I heard, I knew his love of the open road.

TOTALLY
Many RUSH fans may disagree with me...this one of their best
yup
I'm a newer Rush fan, but this is easily in their top 5 for me, if not #1.
I don`t know any Rush fan that would disagree with that.
panda44r LOL
Many Rush fans won't disagree, because there are A LOT of songs that are considered "one of their best".
Who else can see the car , the chase, the cop air cars chasing them, the white haired uncle like a short film, clear as day as the music plays?
I certainly can
I saw them live in '82 I believe it was, during their Grace Under Pressure tour. I think about Speed Racer as the uncle.
The lyrics take me into his world, I imagine that I'm there with him. Love it!
The dystopian world depicted in this song is becoming more real by the day. Mr. Peart was a seer.

These guys are galaxies away in terms of how legend they are especially for their friendship! This music is just a sonic manifestation of that friendship... These guys teach me everyday how to be good human being.
I love you Rush. Like the cool other side of the pillow.
Totally my fave Rush jam. Awesome effin lyrics. A beautiful piece.
i want this song played at my funeral
Holy Shit.....SO DO I
Bradly Kretzschmar my uncle played it at his wedding
Survival_Life my uncle always said he would give me his 68 nova but I wasn't sure, until he told me to play this.
Same
The song and the name of the band go hand and hand. what a rush of great music with great words. I'm replaying it!
I am only 12 and I love this song. I see the "motor law" becoming more and more of a real thing each day. Might never be able to scream down a valley backfiring and shifting. Makes me sad.
TypeRTypical So glad to see new, young Rush fans! Keep fighting the system my man... it’s what we do!
TypeRTypical you make me proud. Never let them rob you of your ability to think , and think realistically. And be proud of you, and live for you.
Thanks Guys
Love this song!
Love this band my dad got me hooked on it... Love this song :)
I know right! I've always wish I could play drums but the violin is good enough right now! (I play the violin)
Emma Lilienthal you play violin? well that's not a regular Rush instrument but you can learn to play "Losing It" and all of Clockwork Angels album since they both feature violin.
K. I will try it :)
coo! Losing It might be hard because the violin in that song is CRAZY but im sure you could do it. :)
Shrek The Ogre They've been playing Losing It during some of their sound tests on their current tour.
Great times. Thanks, guys.
"Well-weathered leather"
"Every Nerve aware"
Alliteration at its best!
Dude this song is so good. it's so 1980's too. I didn't live back then, but it must have been great.
My hero, my idol my mentor, RIP my friend
What I think is so great about this song , is that we all have or had a Red Barchetta in our lives at one time or another, that has made us feel just like the guy in the song, and Hat's off to Rush for writing a song that makes us feel that way !!!
Any friend of Rush is a friend of mine!!!
We used to drive our apartment neighbors crazy with this song and album full blast when it came out! Aww, the memories! :)
The idea for this song came from a one page story from Car and Driver (maybe early 70's) about future cars that were "safety cars" all others were outlawed.
panda44r the magazine was Road and Track
Barcetta means "little boat" two seater with no or minimal windscreen
panda44r The song was inspired by the futuristic short story "A Nice Morning Drive", by Richard Foster
That is correct Alex!
panda44r As Bernard says it was Richard Foster. I saw and interview with Mr.Peart in which he talked about having gotten together recently with Mr. Foster for a few days of spirited sport riding in the eastern U.S.. How cool would that be?
panda44r I think I still have my Triumvirate album Mice come to mind?
Still great music from a band that in my mind, is timeless. Never tired of Rush and their genius
Okay, for those 18 who gave this cerebral video a look see with a negative rating; with an advanced hint to the message, why click on it? For the rest of us, Rush shall always be credited with m intellectual awakenings.
One of the best songs i ever heard. Period.
Love you Neil. RIP
Forever excellent. Thank you!
When he says alloy air car I always thought of an aluminum bodied car with an air cooled engine.
I always think of some sort of hover-car, like the speeder cars in Star Wars, only hovering a couple feet off the ground, somehow air propelled
One of the only songs I know that can play a whole movie in your mind and still be good music. The song is a story. It sounds like a really good song but listen. Let the story play in your head . If not still a a damp good tune period..............
GOING TO THE RUSH CONCERT SO HAPPY
Greatest 3 man band in all the land.
This is the absolute most vividly imaginative song ever written.
red barchetta > Tom sawer
is tom a carpenter
Devon Schmidt he's from a book and the author is mark twain I think
I know man I'm just fucking with you because you spelt it wrong
+Devon Schmidt I had to go back and look at that. Hahahahaha. "Sawer"
MegaThrasher95 ya sorry my bad
One of my all time favorites! Been listening to Rush since my older brother introduced me in my EARLY teens. Thank you, brother! Btw...I am soon to be 49.
This dang song is why i have so many speeding tickets.
I have liked this song for decades but never paid attention to the lyrics. Someone typed
them on a website as his escape song from a bad day. Awesome.
Damn those are good lyrics.
The lyrics are prophetic, backed by the usual musical mastery.
Super!
I personally think that pretty much every RUSH tune could be released today and do just as well if not better then it did back in the day(commercially speaking)
I can literally see this song in my head when I close my eyes...Greatest lyrics ever...
