  • Should you watch Wheel of Time Season 1? I'm here, a non book reader, talking about Amazon Prime's new show The Wheel of Time based on Robert Jordan's massive 14 book Epic Fantasy series of the same name. As someone who hasn't read the series, I feel like a blind viewing was able to certainly shift my opinions more towards this show being very good! And It's got me excited for the next season as we delve deeper into the Dragon Reborn and his story

Great review! I hope you'll review each episode when season 2 comes out :) Also just wanted to note there's an interactive map on the show's prime video page that should be helpful to situate everything.

Agree with a lot of the points, particularly with how weird the finale felt. Honestly the end of The Eye of the World is also supremely weird but, the show didn't fix that weirdness, it just kind of changed it. I do prefer the ending of book 1 to the ending of season 1, the book is strange but I think the ending is more engaging.
On the plus side, I really love how they've overall done Nyneave, Lan, Siuan and Moiraine so far, and I like all of the performances in the main cast. Liking all the characters counts for a lot. I hope next season they learn from the pitfalls of this first one, and that they round off some of the rough edges on some things like certain effects and pacing. Book 2, The Great Hunt, was the one that really hooked me into the series, so I hope the show can pull off something similar.
Also I wonder how much of book 3 we might see? I can totally imagine them basically mashing up the plot of the next two books. It's not like they can feasibly plan 14 seasons, lol.

Enjoyable characters really make for you wanting to absorb world building more willingly, and for these characters to be so enjoyable was so nice, I feel often times with super large casts, there's always a plotline or two that I don't care for and then they become important and I'm understanding it less because I shut my brain off for their scenes before hand. But EVERY character felt so awesome I was so invested in what they were doing.
I certainly agree it would be weird if we didn't bleed into book 3 for season 2 I think. Perhaps they'll speed up the slump in the middle...please

Very thoughtful and considerate review, thank you. I doubt very much Perrin has dealt with his trauma, while he doesnt kill his wife in the books, his struggle with violence is his greatest challenge though most of the book series. I have faith the writers will do this storyline justice.

Great discussion, can agree with a lot as someone whos read the series a bunch. Not everything was perfect in season one but a lot of it was great and thats good enough for me! :D it sounds like the character motivations translated well from page to screen, which isnt something id thought had been done too well, so its good to see that it did actually work for an astute none reader :)

Read the books. LOVED/OBSESSED with the world. Hyped for the Series...I know shows are never as good as the books.. but I had to keep scaling back my expectations. I am pretty happy with the 2% we got LOL !! The best part was the great acting! The pretty scenery was good too.. The sets were nice. But I am really not exaggerating about the 2% ... I cant believe they tried to do the impossible !!

I will say as well fwiw, a lot of the weird end of series stuff was due to covid restrictions (like the lack of close combat in the finale), alongside also dealing with the loss of mats actor. Its unfortunate, but not something that should be an issue for the series moving forward :) which gives me confidence. Just to clarify as well about the channelers at the gap, lady amalisa had absolutely no idea that she was firing a nuke out of a water pistol. They would have planned to be a last defence that ultimately wouldve died in seconds if not for the power that turned up with nynaeve and egwene. Its also clarified that nynaeve wasnt supposed to look dead, but the best job wasnt done to confirm this

A lot of these things make sense in retrospect, and certainly give me a lot more hope we will see the quality rise back up for the coming season!

Haha! I think the raw footage was something like an hour, so comparatively it's pretty quick 😂😂

I think one of the biggest reasons the pace/writing/everything gets weird in the last 2 episodes is that Barney Harris (Mat) had to leave the show and they had to rewrite both episodes... I wish I got to see the original intentions for how that was going to go.

That's very true, I didn't even think about rewrites removing him like that, all a big shame for what was on a really good track before then, but I still have hope.for them to get it back on track in S2

Oh my god. Someone who hasn't read the books AND who liked the show? You definitely missed out on thousands of views for being late to the game; You're the fandom's favorite combination of content creator. Great review, though. You'll get'em next season. Have a sub from me.

@@Laxxia_ Colorblindness is my favorite genetic trait. Did you know you get it from your mom? Not "everyone gets it from their mom," assuming you're the typical case of genetic male, you personally got color-blindness from your mother. And any daughters you have will be carriers. But you will in no way contribute to whether your sons are colorblind or not.
