Unpopular take: I think the reverse direction on ports is a mistake. I have everything set up with USB-C. My Nikon Z6 camera does not use SD cards. I rarely use HDMI out. I use external drives with USB-C, power with USB-C, card reader USB-C. I don’t want MagSafe power to have another cord. I wish my 2017 MBP had an SD card all this time, but now it is too late. I am glad to lose the Touch Bar, i never took to it. So if you have a drone with a mini card or a modern mirror less with CF Express, the new ports dont make sense. Great review, easy to follow logic and your experience of the MBA M1 puts into perspective what the new MBP 14 base model will be able to achieve, as a very bare minimum. I think in reality, those who truly need the maxed out specs will be very much the exception rather than the rule. Also, I don’t really get the ‘wanting to future proof’ for 10 years comments, 1 year is a now long time in Computer technology…you got me subscribed !
the base M1pro 14 inches is great but I am not sure if it is capable of running the IDE like eclipse and Visual studio code for software development! any advice?
The thing we're all missing here is that you'll still need a dongle or adapter for native USB-a devices, all your USB-a sticks and USB-a peripherals, also am I the only one that thinks the chassis design looks an old school macbook?
Agree, i think the world is going usb-c and this is a step in the wrong direction with ports. Keeping the ports in the past would have been good, but going back now is non-sensical to me
I had to get the next model up just for the 1TB, 10 core CPU/16 core Gpu. I think it should cover me for the next 10 years, just like my old MBP 17" did in 2011. 😀 Hopefully get it next week here in the UK.
I share your excitement and reactions. I almost pulled the trigger on the 2020 M1 MBP, but held out for the (then, rumored 14-in). So, I jumped on the 14-in M1-PRO. (I will trade an older 13 MBP for a $600 credit). I thought the five offered options for the SOCs was a little much. I also went with the base model. I do not have any extreme application requirements. Look forward to your future videos on this topic.
Agreed - the base model is the new MBP starts at 16gb RAM, plus all the other bells and whistles. I’m my experience with M1, 16gb edits 4K footage like a champ
I feel like the base model is not a great investment, if 16GB of RAM is enough it’s probably a better idea to stick with the regular M1 and safe a ton of money or get more storage.
Good point, tho the new MBP also has a lot of upgraded internals and display features that may be worth the upgrade from the 13”. We shall see once I get it next week!!
I have been waiting forever for the additional screen real estate of the 14” so that is the one I’ll get. But yes, if there were a M1 chip option for the 14” I would have probably chosen that.
Subbed! Leaning toward 16" (non-pro user) for viewing content since we're going to cut cable cord! Really interested in seeing how screen size looks compared to my 2020 iPad Pro 12.9 and 2021 iMac 24"
I ordered the 14" base model as well but I was wondering if Apple changed something inside like what they did to the iMac 24" M1 base model (which has only 7 cores but there's only one fan instead of two fans + heat pipe compared to the 8-core version). Apple is not clear enough listing differences about the specs.
I have 3 screens, 1080p each. Will you be testing out how many external displays the 14in M1 pro can handle ? Apple said it supports up to 2 6k displays. Considering the original M1 only “supported 1 external display” but with dongles you can attach more than 2 and it would work fine. Do you think the new model can handle 3 1080p screens?
tbh I actually found the "dongle life" preferable because I have all my stuff plugged to a single hub, and when I have to get up and go, I'd just unplug that single hub vs having to unplug each individual cable from the ports on the MacBook itself.
@@b3naqua Yeah honestly the SD Card I agree with being built in 100% since it's the most unobtrusive ahaha Also the SD Card slots on hubs are usually trash and slow.
Agree on dongles being okay, gives more flexibility to upgrade card readers for speed. I have a combo CF Express and SD card reader which is good for me. Others might want SD plus micro-SD for drones, so one built in (not the fastest) SD reader is meh for me….
The dilemma is real! I'd hoped for a slightly cheaper 14" model. As a windows user I'm willing to switch to these M1 (Pro) Macbooks to create my videos and photos. I currently edit on an old and basic windows machine which takes ages to render my videos in full HD. Torn between the 13" macbook pro with 16GB and 1TB SSD or the base model 14" pro or the upgraded one to 1TB SSD and M1 Pro with 10 cores/16 cores GPU. Do you think I'd need anything like this for let's say weekly vlogs/videos when editing in Davinci Resolve or even FCPX?
If you have the budget, I’d go for the 14 inch base model and see how that goes. The 16gb M1 13” would also slice right thru video if you’re on more of a budget
I'm thinking about getting the base 16 model as that seems like the most value for money config out of all of these, but i am hesitant as these macs are about double the previous macbook pro 13. Don't know what to do as these are just way too costly man.
I have kind of a bizarre question: For someone who does photo editing and who is currently using an M1 MacBook Air, would you recommend upgrading to this new MacBook Pro or would you at least recommend not even thinking about upgrading until the next MacBook Air with the new Apple Silicon processor comes out!
If you’re happy with your M1 Air and it does what you need to do without hiccups or issues, I’d say keep it! I love my M1 Air. Unless you’re rich af, in which case upgrade lol
@@b3naqua Definitely not rich! I was just very curious (even though I most likely was not going to upgrade to this new Mac anyway)! I did order the new AirPods, which I am very excited for!
Ooh nice! Yeah I think the M1 Air is totally sufficient for photo editing. I am curious about the new display on the MBP tho. It has a ton of spicy upgrades. I’ll report back whether it’s be worth the upgrade from the Air!
Very practical advice on getting the base model. If I’d add anything to the base it would be the 32 gb memory but it’s still cheaper than the 16 inch. What a great time in tech! Thanks for the video!
Good luck. For me it’s too expensive, I was hoping for a Mac mini pro or Max. For transportability, idk but prefer to buy an iPad Pro ^^ enjoy ur purchase
Thanks Yanis! Yeah, iPad Pro is still more fun to use than Mac imo. I love my iPad Pro! A new Mac mini would've been amazing too. I wonder if Apple will drop that next year.
Well done Ben on being normal in the way that you talk about tech. Appreciated. Even though your dress code is a little out there! even for me. Keep it up bro.
I used max out PC last 2 years to render 3D and its fucking lag. For sure i will max out this mac 😂…but if only normal size 3D render i think not necessary. This one i render the whole plant
@@b3naqua I would also like to see your review on this. The charging and how it affects battery. I'm deciding between the base model 8core vs the 10 core which comes with the fast charger. If I won't ever utilize all 10 cores no point for me to get the 10 core. Then decide between the fast charger or normal one.
@@b3naqua now someone tells me, after I ordered base with 32gb, tb, and 96w charger. But might be ok if I don’t use it while it’s charging; at least that seems to be the case with phone batteries.

Someone else said it won’t be much of a different from 8/10 to 10/16. Like 10-15%. Only testing would tell.
Can u test the base level M1 14 inch to M1 13 base level, I just want to know whether should I upgrade or not !
Can you please try to connect the m1pro macbook to 3 4K displays and see if its supported natively?
I share your excitement and reactions. I almost pulled the trigger on the 2020 M1 MBP, but held out for the (then, rumored 14-in). So, I jumped on the 14-in M1-PRO. (I will trade an older 13 MBP for a $600 credit). I thought the five offered options for the SOCs was a little much. I also went with the base model. I do not have any extreme application requirements. Look forward to your future videos on this topic.
Awesome that you got the base too! We'll see how well it performs coming up 👍🏼
Is the base model 14 good enough to edit 4k video? I have a custom built pc but thought about switching to a macbook for final cut
The base model MBP starts with 16gb/512gb and other awesome specs, so that alone separates it from the previous M1 base models imo. Can't wait!
Oooh good point! I mostly use a dongle for the SD card reader and hdmi out, so I’m looking forward esp to simply plugging my SD card into the MBP
@@b3naqua Yeah honestly the SD Card I agree with being built in 100% since it's the most unobtrusive ahaha
Also the SD Card slots on hubs are usually trash and slow.
Facts
@@b3naqua thanks a lot for the suggestion Ben! I guess I'm going to order that 14" base model. It should be more than enough for now 😃
@@yoshimertens do it!!
I'm thinking about getting the base 16 model as that seems like the most value for money config out of all of these, but i am hesitant as these macs are about double the previous macbook pro 13. Don't know what to do as these are just way too costly man.
They are expensive, only got the base model... I’m replacing a 2013 MBP so I can’t complain, I would have already bought 3 windows machines 😭
Yeah they’re so expensive 😵💫 I’d say save your $ rn and wait for all the real world reviews to come out before making your decision
@@b3naqua Thanks!
Very practical advice on getting the base model. If I’d add anything to the base it would be the 32 gb memory but it’s still cheaper than the 16 inch. What a great time in tech! Thanks for the video!
You’re welcome! Yeah, we really live in a remarkable era of tech. These Macs are spoiling tf out of us 😂
It jumps the price up £500 lol. Your forced to get 32gb ram
Hi- I have a early 2015 13" mbp.. Should I save $800 and just get the 13" m1 or should I get the 14"?
Depends on how much power and features you need, but if you have the $ I’d get the 14
@@b3naqua me too ! But I think it will just be like an m2 chip, a minor update
im waiting for the 27in then ill compare and see what looks best. I can role with either a laptop or desktop.
I will get the M1 pro Max 1TO 14’
Awesome setup!
Gaming PC or this Mac?
Sweet my thoughts exactly, I ordered the baseline 14 inch as well and I'm sure it's going to be extremely fast for everything I need to do with it
Awesome! Can’t wait!
getting M1 Max 16". M to the 1 to the Max to the Pro (rap time)
Lol I edited the rapping part down so much to keep the video concise, but I was giggling and being so ridiculous when I was filming this 😂
@@b3naqua HAHA. thats great. just upload that as a blooper.
Yo clean keyboard bro! What is it!?!
Thanks! It's this one: ruclips.net/video/44vadY36z5A/видео.html
@@b3naqua appreciate that brother 🙏🏼
going to buy M1 Max when it is available in Apple Store on 26 October.
get it!
Not fast charger?
Nope, I got the normal charger. Really curious how the base model configuration holds up
@@b3naqua I would also like to see your review on this. The charging and how it affects battery. I'm deciding between the base model 8core vs the 10 core which comes with the fast charger. If I won't ever utilize all 10 cores no point for me to get the 10 core. Then decide between the fast charger or normal one.
Noted! Fast charging is really convenient, but it tends to drain batteries more in the long term. We’ll see how the base model battery goes 👍🏼
@@b3naqua now someone tells me, after I ordered base with 32gb, tb, and 96w charger. But might be ok if I don’t use it while it’s charging; at least that seems to be the case with phone batteries.
You didnt get jacks a$$, they arnt yet in the shop. Clickbaiting titles
At least get 1 TB with +$180
If you got the base model, it's better to stay with Mac M1!
That’s one of the reasons I got the base model, cuz I’d imagine there are a ton of people with spec’d out M1 machines who are wondering if the new MBP is worth it
U are rich as f
Because you couldn't afford the fully specced 16" one?
“Why I got the 14” MacBook Pro base model” cause you too poe for the good one
I know this is a bs video but since I am looking for info I am gone watch anyway
if you’re broke just say it 😂
