MacBook Pro 14" in 2023 The Best Laptop... Except (LONG TERM REVIEW)

  • It has been over 452 days since Apple has refreshed the M1 Pro and M1 Max 14 and 16 inch MacBook Pros, and I have been using one almost daily since its release. Since that period, this laptop has been with me on my daily coffee runs, in airports, at the studio, and it has helped me finish countless video projects, scripts, photo edits, RUclips videos, and even some downtime playing games. So after one year is the 14" MacBook Pro still worth it, and should you buy one today despite its age?

      No, it's MacBook Pro 13/15 Non-Retina Mid-2012. That's the best MacBook/PowerBook ever made.
MBP14/16 M1 Pro/Max is the 2nd best ever made. There's a couple of reasons why it's not number one...
      - no USB-A port
      - the 3,5mm headphone jack is not combo (digital & analog), it's only analog
      - can't replace SSD/RAM
      - too expensive base model
      - no battery check on the side (that button and the status lights)
Would love to see a Tier Ranking for MacBooks. I would place both MBP Mid-2012 Non-Retina and MBP14/16 M1 Pro/Max on the S tier but Mid-2012 is even better.
I'm really happy for MBP14/16 M1 Pro/Max but it's maybe too expensive/pricy. The base models MBP14 is pretty affordable on sales but still not cheap enough but it's close.
MacBook 12" 2015 with only one USB-C port and that butterfly keyboard is E or F. One of the worst MacBooks ever. MBP Butterfly since 2016 is C or D. MacBook Pro Late 2006 (first with Core 2 Duo) was A or B - better than MBP Early 2006 with Core Duo that got too hot. Core 2 Duo solved much of that heat problem.

@@holdingfarkas same! MBP14 M1 Pro (10 core CPU) 16/1000. On sale. I wanted 32 GB RAM but that would have costed 1000 (!) dollar more. Yes! No joke!
My MBP14 16/1000 costed 1900 dollar on sale. On AppleStore the 32/1000 config is 2900 dollar. That's a 1000 dollar difference! And 2000 GB SSD would have costed even more: 400 dollar more. So 32/2000 GB would have costed 1400 dollar more. For those 1400 dollar extra I can probably buy Samsung's new 27" 5K display instead of extra RAM and bigger SSD.
      All prices before sales tax.
So my strategy is that I hope this MBP14 will be a good computer for 3-5 years, then I will buy a new one. Hopefully an even better one :)

      @@cjeelde What a dinosauric comment.
USB A should have been phased out ages ago.
S/PDIF is mostly meaningless (digital audio out) with current tech, and if you need it you might as well just get a DAC.
"RAM" can't be changed for technical reasons (no, It is not just "soldered").
Storage I will give to you. That's how Apple rips everyone off in 2023 and have for a while.

      USB-A - at least one port on a MBP. It's okay that they got 3 USB-C ports. More USB-C than USB-A. Just look at Mac Mini M1: 2x USB-C, 2x USB-A, 1x HDMI and 1x 3,5mm
Toslink: I mean, there's already a 3,5mm jack. If they made that port a combo port would not take extra space. Maybe they need additional circuits on the motherboard. They can fix it.
RAM - I know it's a part of the chip now. I think they started with soldered RAM with MBP Mid-2012 Retina. But since M1 the RAM is inside the chip, soldered. I think it's better when it's not soldered so you can buy a machine with 8 or 16 GB and upgrade to 32 or 64 GB if or when you need. It's about economy.
SSD - yeah that's the sad story. I've always wanted an M.2-2280 slot (PCIe NVMe) so you can buy Samsung's SSDs if you want. A good thing would be a soldered SSD plus one M.2 slot.
This is where Apple is making huge money on Macs: the BTO options for RAM and SSD. Extreme profits. They sell under-speced base models to force as many as possible to buy the Mac on AppleStore and use those expensive BTO options. It's okay for pro users with a huge wallet but there are many pro users that don't like to spend that much money at once. Many pro users are used to buy Macs that you can upgrade later on.
And if you look at the history close, you will see that the Macs changed when Steve Jobs died and Tim Cook took over. MBP Mid-2012 Non-Retina was a "Jobs product" and that Retina was a Cook product. From a MBP that you could upgrade a lot to a MBP that you couldn't upgrade at all, kind of. The same thing happend to the other Macs as well. Just look at Mac Pro trashcan compared to Mac Pro tower - also a difference. Apple realized their mistake with the trashcan and released a new tower that you could upgrade kind of how you could before. After MBP Retina you saw MBP Butterfly that was even worse and Apple realized that and added these ports that pro users missed: MagSafe, HDMI and SD card slot. Hopefully Apple will listen even more to their customers. Make MBP a little bit more fat (still slim) so it's possible to add a M.2 SSD. That will hurt Apple's profit but on the other hand, that might increase the unit sales of MBP and maybe also that users will go for more RAM (BTO), 32-64 GB, and stick with 1TB SSD and buy a second SSD from Samsung later on. Would be so great to hade two internal SSDs: one from Apple (soldered) and one optional thanks to the M.2 slot. With MBP Mid-2012 Non-Retina you could actually have 2 internal SATA SSDs. Some pro users loved that. So they removed the internal DVD and replaced it with a second SSD. They could even create an internal RAID with those two SSDs. That MBP Mid-2012 Non-Retina is really the best MacBook/PowerBook ever made. Such a great Mac! Gigabit Ethernet, FireWire 800, Thunderbolt (MiniDP), 2x USB-A (5 Gbps), SD card slot and a combo 3,5mm (analog&digital). Plus DVD-R. Was a great machine when they released it. Still a very good Mac.

I’m now over nine months in with my 14” MacBook Pro, and I have no regrets on what I’ve spent on it: still the best laptop I’ve ever owned. The M1 Max performance. The quiet. No more throttling. The 4TB SSD convenience. The portability of going from my studio desk attached to a dock to slipping it into my backpack. When I had low battery at a cafe, the same powerbank that charges my iPad Pro keeps the laptop running. What you didn't mention is that the speaker are better on the 16-inch than the 14-inch. The battery is FANTASTIC. Plus, I travel back and forth from work with my Mac, and back in my car, so the larger size and weight is no bother,... and it's, like I said, LIGHTER than my last old MBP.

It demonstrates a personalisation that applies to all products really. You balance the needs against the inconveniences. Also, I was happy with the specs on the base 14" and didn't feel the need to up it to the full performance. Going for the base 16" would have added 20% to the price for a pretty bad trade off on portability and specs I will never use.

Intriguingly, the HDMI-port only works when the connected device has its own HDMI-connection. At my school, we have a lot of older beamers which still only have VGA - I live and teach on a Caribbean island - and when using the HDMI-dongle to connect to the VGA cable of the beamer, both the MacBook Pro 14" and the MacBook Air M1 do not connect. However, when I pop in a USB-C dongle, I can connect via de HDMI port of that dongle to a VGA-based beamer.

A friend I use to work with favorite saying about the storage was "Crap always expands to the space available". Now maybe just me. Think about moving completed projects off from the local storage when you are starting a new project.
Now I know it would add to the weight of your backpack. Might think about the purchase of the biggest battery pack you can take on a airplane. Then if you are going to be using your MacBook Pro for any period of time plug it into the battery pack before you start using it. I know it is a bit of a pain however you could also use it to charge your other devices when needed.

Totally agree that MBP14 M1 Pro 8cores CPU 16/512 - on a good sale - is THE BEST DEAL for ANY average customer that wanna have a new MacBook:
    + not just 14", it's high quality
+ more ports and many non-pro users will love HDMI and SD card slot
+ great performance (also faster SSD than in MacBook Air)
    + great/good battery life
    + MagSafe is back
Pro users should look at the BTO options. 2-8 TB if you gonna edit a lot of high res videos. 32-64 GB RAM also.
If you're an average user and need more storage: go for 512-1000 GB internal SSD and get an affordable external solution. If you're very rich average user and need much storage then go for 2-8 TB internal SSD :)
One thing that people never talk about is the SSD performance in MBA vs MBP. It's really faster in MBP. That's great for the boot/reboot performance and when you launch apps. Most users will probably love the "MBA performance" but MBP14/16 is even faster.
Storage is not just about how many GB. It's also the read/write performance. Same thing about displays: it's not just the size, it's also pixel density (Retina or not?), nits, color accuracy, refresh rate and much more.
I'm so glad that the Butterfly MacBooks are history. Apple never listened to their customers. They made what they hoped that the customers gonna love. It turned out that Apple did wrong. I felt that at day 1 in late 2016. So that's why I waited for so many years to buy a new MBP.
With MBP14 they corrected these problems:
+ the keyboard (away from butterfly and no more touchbar)
+ added useful ports that we missed (HDMI and SD card slot)
    + MagSafe (charging) is back!
    There's only two/three things I miss:
    1) at least one USB-A port
    2) possibility to replace SSD, RAM and battery
    3) the 3,5mm headphone jack is not optical-analog, it's only analog. Older MacBooks had that optical-analog combo! That's great for those speakers that got a toslink connection.
At least the battery is possible to replace but you need to bring your MBP to a service center. I think it's glued or so. It's not "user friendly" to replace as for older MBP Non-Retina (Unibody?). There's dongles and docks with many ports like USB-A, Ethernet and yada yada yada :) but that will cost even more money :(
But these M1 Pro/Max MacBooks are a big step forward in the right direction compared to the Butterfly MacBooks.
I hope Apple can let us upgrade at least the SSD in future MacBooks. Probably not gonna happen but I will never stop dream about it.
MBP Butterfly with 4 TB ports had no MagSafe. So in the reality it was 3 TB ports plus 1 charging port. MBP14/16 got "only" 3 TB ports but no need to use those for charging since MagSafe is back. So it's not a loss for TB ports on MBP14/16.
Before I forget, it's not possible to use any eGPU with MacBooks with M1/M2?

    • @cjeelde
      @cjeelde Год назад +1

8cores CPU means "8 microprocessors (CPU) in a chip". In the 80s and 90s, personal computers had only one microprocessor, so "1core CPU". Later on they (Intel and other companies) started to combine 2, 4 and 8 processors together in one chip to bring more performance. When they do that, they call one processor for "one core".
So it's all about performance. More cores equals more performance. Another method to add performance is to increase the "clock frequency" and that is about MHz or GHz.
One great thing Apple did with their own processors is adding "battery friendly CPU cores", so their M1 and M2 chips got both high performance cores and "battery friendly cores".
For MacBook Pro M1 Pro, 2 of the CPU cores are battery friendly. For M2 Pro, 4 of the CPU cores are battery friendly.
GPU cores: that's the "graphics card" and how many "graphics processors" it got. That card is integrated into the M1 chip as well as the M2 chip. So it's very small.
Since you're a graphics designer I would recommend you to buy MacBook Pro 14 or 16 inch because these two models got a very very good display, it's about color accuracy. That's the best you can get. So don't go for MacBook Air! And don't go for MacBook Pro 13 inch! Go for 14 or 16 i inch. So M1 Pro or M2 Pro. 16 GB RAM ("unified memory") is the smallest amount you can pick and that should work great. If you can afford 32 GB RAM and find a refurbished model with 32 GB then go for it. 16 GB should work fine too.
M1 Pro vs M2 Pro? It's not a huge difference. M2 Pro is kind of an overclocked M1 Pro plus 2 added "battery friendly CPU cores". M1 Pro is still a great performance!
So do you need 14 or 16 inch?

First, the battery drains quick. and the second issue I have is whenever I want to to use an external hard drive and formatted in exfat or in ms-dos(fat) the macbook wants to run slow. and it's not with one particular external hard drive, it's with any other external hard drive formatted in exfat or ms-dos (fat). But if the external hard drive was formatted in APFS format then ist runs smoothly and quick. why is that? why in exfat or in ms-dos(fat) it runs slow?

I kind of have regrets about my Ram choices. Believe it or not photo editing is the big culprit of being the ram hog. I’ve moved over to editing on Luminar Neo as my editor and man I’m constantly at 85-90% ram usage with just safari open and no RUclips videos. With RUclips running I’m always using insane swap usages. So I definitely will get 64gb next time since I’m doing more photography editing. But with video 16gb is still fine and I’ve never maxed out my ram even on 4k 6k high frame rate editing

Almost all of the "long-term" reviews now are suggesting 8tb of storage. Insane how people don't clear up their drives as well as what is the point of leaving tons of things open, you really only use one thing at any given time. No reason to go above 1tb of storage and 32 gb of ram straight up

You don’t get apple care for dents and scrapes, you get apple care for external accidents that could genuinely destroy your computer or software failures that render your laptop unusable. When I had the 13’ M1 MBP, a failure during the update process rendered it completely unusable and it couldn’t be restored by another Mac. I was stuck with a 1400 paperweight that would have cost me 600 dollars to get fixed at the Apple Store had I not paid for apple care.
