Finishing the Craft Room

- I have been working on a lengthy list of small projects to finish up the craft room. We brought in the desks that I had made earlier. We also brought in a free-standing coat closet that I had made for our old house. I also made some bookshelves that are hung from above on the French cleats and the supporting structure for the shelf works as bookends on the shelves. I attached a French cleat to an old blackboard that we have and hung that in the room. I made some very narrow shelves out of the red alder that I cut down with my friend Gabe a few years ago. These shelves will be good for holding framed artwork. We brought Calvin's train table into the craft room to use as a work table as Calvin is not as into trains as he used to be. I put up an extension cord reel on the ceiling so we can have an extension cord wherever we need it in the craft room and beyond. The last big project was some storage shelves along the back wall of the craft room. I made these free-standing as the back wall is concrete and I did not attach any French cleats in that location. The craft room is essentially done at this point although there are always more small projects to be done.
Craft Room part 1: • Making a Craft Room
Craft Room part 2: • French Cleat Desk
red alder: • Chainsaw milling
Model Train Table: • Building a Model Train...

That crazy motion of many woods makes me CRAZY! DAMN WOW!
I am never disappointed at how 'crafty' Frank Howarth's videos are.
You a gremlin
xoxo: they are also very ASMR.... with his soothing narration.
"it just needs to be held well enough that it doesn't fall down"
Well don't we all, man... Don't we all.
was just thinking - that hit harder than I expected
I would love to see a floor plan of Franks basement to prove that he does not in fact live in a TARDIS.
"And the wall that faces the basement shop room.."
OH COME ON!
And of course...
It’s bigger on the inside.
he has to have 3 sub basements. its a missile silo or something
Someone else remember the peanuts episode where snoopy is showing the huge basement of his dog kennel?
I always get reminded of this episode when I see Frank working on his own basement 🤣
It’s obviously in the shape of a pyramid; so it’s smaller at the top and progressively gets bigger the further down you go.
"with the price of plywood these days" Looking forward to see - Frank makes his own plywood press series.
Your “craft” room looks like a museum collections room. Nice work as always
I can only imagine how convenient it would be to cut fabric on that table. Wonderful as always, Frank.
I love the idea of shelves that don't have a floor to them, just some "joists". This would prevent anything small and unorganized from being placed on them and everything would have to go in a bin. I'm using this for sure!
The idea of shelves that reject clutter would make these shelves great even if they didn't save material and look cool!
"Oops can't put the shelf here because of the electrical outlet" then "Going to put this blackboard right here" ... over an electrical outlet. Got a chuckle from that, but overall fantastic job as always. But man that room went from spacious to downright small once that repurposed train table went in there.
we were afraid that table was going to fill it even more than is dose.
@@frankmakes It's certainly big but so, so useful. I bet it's still just too small for an up-coming project though. How tight is the access to the basement Frank? Are there loads of tight corners to negotiate to get to the room?
The timber animation was unbelievable. Thanks for creating such inspiring, exceptional content.
I think you're on a very short list of people who's videos I always watch. Just released a French Cleat video today and used lots of info I've absorbed from you over the years. Cheers my friend!
Frank commonly solves problems in different ways that I would never think of. He's a great resource.
I have a very long list of people who's videos I always watch. I guess this pandemic is giving me way too much free time!! (Don't worry JKM, like Frank, you're definitely up there on that list!)
@@billymacmakes Who else is on that list? I can always use a few more crafty resources for inspiration. I was about to type up a list of the channels I watch the most but it was about to get loooong.
I would value knowing your list because you are up there with FH. There are many bad ones and when you don't know what you don't know you can be deceived with shotty practices. Thanks.
The little cleat for holding the headphones is a nice afterthought. I like it :)
I'm glad that got noticed. Calvin mentioned he needed a place to put his headphones. Boom done!
I am just stopping by to let you know that you are my inspiration, thank you !
I really want someone to make a super cut of every time he laughs or says cleats
I hadn’t seen your videos in a while. Calvin is so tall I was blown away!
You are very clever at making your videos Frank- for an old bloke. I'm an old bloke and you are streets ahead of me.
I think I get too excited for Frank's videos 😁😁
I like the little bookcase shelves, put a lip on the front and they'll make good workshop shelves too.
You have a supurb presentation voice and delivery. As good as any contemporary voice artist.
I'm convinced this guy has his chuckle as a recorded sound fx.
WOW that blackboard transition shot tingled
I appreciate the message on the blackboard.
With all of its beautifully crafted accomodations Howarth's house is bound to be a must for every visitor in Oregon... or Great Idaho
Just a quick tip for filling gaps/cracks in concrete before painting floors.... Use bondo or similar. I've done this is a couple of warehouses and it's stood up well, including running forklifts over the cracks. This trick was taught to me by a guy who owned a company that manufactures epoxy flooring paints.....
Frank's house goes forever. It has infinite space !!!!
You should have over a million subscribers by now.
Your laugh is infectious. Great video!
I barely have time to recharge some batteries, make a small diy project and relax on the long weekend. Meanwhile Frank, creates a whole craft room, moves furniture around, redesigns the shelf, makes an awesome video with incredible animations and throws a couple of CNC parts while he’s at it. Voiceover the video with perfect explanations and uploads it for us to enjoy. Thank you Frank you are awesome!
Love how you have remodeled the house, and brought us all along on the journey. Your work is so good, and videos are top notch. Thank you for doing all of this. Inspiring to say the least.
Next, in the saga of Frank’s never ending basement . . . What a wonderful workspace. Thanks for sharing!
Wow, your children have really grown up!!!
But, it has been a few years!!!!
Stay well, and keep up the good work.
I don't know why he didn't reach million sub
He deserves that
Congratulations Frank! You have graduated to the hanging shelves I created over the windows, and completely around the room for my wife’s library some 25 odd years ago. The supports all being on the top side kept her books nice and tidy and it also looks much better. Rock on!
Really enjoy watching your videos!
I love this gentleman's sanding disc,its HUGE😀😀
Very nice craft room. I enjoy all you video's
First time I've ever seen someone hang a desk on a French Cleat!
They are still working great after a few years
Thank you for the screw/shear connection explanation
That animation with the shelf pieces blew me away! Great stuff, Frank.
Amazing as always!!
... beautifully functional!
Frank, you're awesome and i love listening to your though processes and wise words (:
Looks great. Thanks for sharing.
Always a good show, thanks Frank.
Ceiling-level cat run: as far as my cats are concerned, it’s already completed as shown. They only care about a landing pad every 6-8 feet and the occasional shelf from which they can knock valuables to the floor.
In my opinion Mr Frank goes beyond being a simple Carpenter ,he's a Genius and through the years the quality of his videos has not changed,Respect to Mr Frank. PS timber animation it blew my mind
Awesome work, my uncle use to say " I was the only person he knew that could cut a measured board short" .To watch you work is a pleasure. ✌🇨🇦✌
Looking good, Frank! Thanks for sharing! 🤓
This room looks great.
Very nice add-on to your basement
Absolutely beautiful Frank
Great video, as always. Thanks!
I bet the enclosure of that cord reel isn't integral to it's function... 3D print or CNC carve a new case that matches the room:)
It looks so good down there!
Great ideas all the way around. thanks for sharing.
Great work as always Frank. Thanks for taking us along.
Very nice and very functional!
Excellent layout and craftsmanship.
You are a wonderful craftsman. I love the videos. Very relaxing.
A cat run sounds fun; make sure there are strategic carpet/upholstered catbeds at key points of both observation, or other advantagous spots, perhaps one near a computer tower with WARMS, or...at a place where they can be scritched conveniently. 4 or 5 spots should do. or perhaps make those nest spots be modular, and you can move them at will, to offer some flexibility and "reprogram" the runs to keep it interesting for the kitties.
Frank these videos and projects are BEYOND fantastic! And I love the cinematography...awesome video effects! Thank you for all the work you put into these for us to learn and to be entertained by! Bravo!
I adore you for your mastery
Many thanks for the video Frank, I really enjoyed it.
This is very cool, Frank. I love your work.
Enjoy seeing you work. Very nice craft room, hope you all get many hours of productive work in there!
Awesome video Frank.
Very nice !!!
Somebody had fun with extra editing! Nice….and very cool
Great room.
Wonderful!
I love the way you animate the parts you work on! Great to see you again, Frank!
Nice work!
Entertaining and informative as usual. Really enjoy your vids. Thanks
Looks great Frank, and a joy to watch as usual :)
Inspiring as usual Frank, not only because of your skills, your process approach & great facilites, but for your patience and mind skills behind them.
Awsome editing!!!
Your son is getting big! Love your videos.
Anyone else love Franks little chuckles
Excellent!
The best RUclipsr of all time. You're a genius Frank.
That room looks great. Functional now, and flexible for future needs. It looks like an enjoyable space to do many different things.
Man! Your videos are like a meditation. I love every second of your videos. Stunning how creative you are and how good you are with woodworking. I shudder to think how much your wood shop costs. I would imagine all that equipment is worth at least a $50-$70K.
Cat walk with custom cat condo/tower would be awesome to see! The room turned out fantastically. I'm always impressed with not only the quality of your work but also of your videos.
the 1 screw clamping the rack structure + friction to hold it is brilliant.
nice touch with the edit on the blackboard with the train footage.
Thanks! Oh look I have a little patch of green screen.
Lovely craft room. Make me one 😘
Chalk dust and computers and printers should never mix. It's why so many computer labs in schools switched to dry-erase whiteboards.
Fantastic project, as usual!
Damn, my 7yo is mesmerized with your videos.
You should look into spray on finish, might be easier and faster to put on in such quantities
Without a compression value of side pressure on those shelves you would not have much friction hold.. The screws however have a very high Shear and tension strength. Shelves should hold nicely. I am, as always very entertained and impressed with the ways you find to build your projects. Not always industry standards and often unique.
maybe a set of nested sliding shelves for those French Cleats...? Room looking great!
Nice room after repair
I so want to build a desk that hangs on a French cleat. That is so cool.
I would suggest removing the bottom shelf, or making it removable, just so you can clean under there. It will also give you a bit more height for larger/heavier items you want to store.
I agree, even if he just inverts the entire structure. I like the idea of being able to place large totes under it. directly on the floor
9:09 omg i love your editing.
I always enjoy your videos Frank. When you began to bring the train table into room I noticed the artful chalk drawing - what a nice "Easter egg" to see the drawing come alive! Nice editing, my friend. And, man, I gotta get me some of them SASs - self-assembling-shelves.
Your wife must be pretty understanding and self sufficient having a workshop and craft room like that 😂
I'm sorry but the comedy of the 4:05 moment is pure gold
Great as usual. As for that big table: you can buy recessed/foldaway outlets that you can cut into that dead space in the center of the table. That may solve your overhead wire issue, and the foldaway ones basically disappear into the table top if you set them in a bit. Just an idea.
I like that.
They are spendy, though.
@@timma_thy Won't argue that: $47 on Amazon, but it's the hideaway with the cover and it's both 3-prong and USB.
Thanks for sharing
Looking GREAT. As for the extension cord recoiler. You have a void space above it, recess the coil and let the courd extend through a finished portal into the room.
