Oh wow, you're striking gold with these recent reactions, such masterpieces. Keep it up, much love from Denmark.

I think one of the cool guitar techniques you're picking up on is the use of an E-bow, which is a way of using magnets to vibrate the strings rather than touching them directly. Gives a very eerie/haunting vibe and can sound very atmospheric. They are way cool.

I think I've seen one of those used to simulate dubstep beats on a bass guitar once lol that's super cool, thank you for sharing with me! 🙂

I have an E-bow. It's super fun. I used it in a performance once when I'd injured my hand and couldn't do chord shapes.

Sound at the end with the voice was an 'Ebow' on the guitar, it features throughout the song. Really nice. Typically tunes will have the bass, drums and vocals panned centre as the frequencies don't clash so much. It leaves space for the voice. The higher frequency instruments are panned off to the sides and probably filtered to remove some of the lower frequencies. In mixing it's called a 'smiley face' EQ....bass and high-end boosted a bit, mids cut.

For pretty much all of these songs, whatever sounds you hear on the left is the taller guy and his guitar and whatever you hear on the right is the other guy with the longer black hair on his guitar or keys etc. Basically whoever's left and right of the singer is what's left and right in the panning lol
And also, yeah most of the sounds they make come from the guitars

Great video, thanks! I'm always a sucker for a Radiohead reaction video (which is how I ended up here), and loved your takes on this one and Arpeggi. Watching Thom get into it is always a joy to behold, it's like you can see straight into his soul when he performs. Sorry that's a bit cheesy haha
I don't think I've read this anywhere in the comments yet, but Jonny (long hair) uses an ondes martenot on this track and many others. If you're not familiar, it's like a synth where you put your finger through a ring on a wire, allowing you to slide between the notes. It's a super rare instrument - other than Messiaen (who Jonny loves, I'm pretty sure) - I think Radiohead are by far the most well-known users of the instrument.
So yeah, that's how you're getting that sort of split sound between Ed, using his e-bow, and Jonny on the ondes martenot. It's a bit of a shame that you don't actually see it in this video, but good examples of it are in Where I End and You Begin (the version in this Basement session is absolutely wild) and National Anthem, both much more raucous tracks than this one!
Just cos you mentioned how you hadn't been keeping up with the band over the years, it's fair to say they have covered a LOT of ground stylistically over the years. There's always that Radiohead feel (probably largely cos of Thom's voice, but for a few other reasons too), but it's pretty mad how musically diverse they get.
Thanks again for the vid :)

Not as technical as you think. No synths or "voice splitter". It's called an e-bow. It's a battery operated device that the guitarist holds in his picking hand. It vibrates individual strings and with reverb and other effects it makes the guitar sound like orchestral stringed instruments.

Yeah, Thom really gets 'into' his music. As Radiohead's only songwriter, all the songs originate from him and when he performs, you understand the emotion even if you don't understand the lyrics. All except the bass player have their own solo projects, but they never put any song ideas forward for Radiohead to perform. This doesn't mean the other band members aren't important, they each use their talented musicianship to come up with whatever it takes to support Thom's song concepts to their fullest.

i think you're a little bit uninformed, everyone writes in radiohead, particularly Johnny, who has wrote a lot of rh's masterpieces. Idioteque's synthetizers, Weird fishes, jigsaws falling into place main acoustic riff, a lot of a moon shaped pool "strings" sounds come from his influence with movie's soundtracks, etc.
Of course, this doesn't mean thom is a genius and his songwriting and lyricism are out of this world, but just want to say everyone adds to the band, not allowing band members to add their ideas into the songs is totally a non-radiohead to do.

@@mathiasvarelatoranzo7795 for Radiohead, Jonny write parts to go with Thom's ideas, never the other way round. Even the conductor of the orchestra for How To Disappear Completely said in an interview, he worked with Jonny, but Thom directed everything, there was no doubt in his mind that Thom runs the show. Yes the other guys write parts, but they're writing parts to serve Thom's songs. Ed also said this in his interview for 'That Pedal Show'.

Hopefully this is taken as constructive feedback. This is the second reaction i've watched of yours (the first was Radiohead, Weird fishes) and there's just something which unfortunately irritates me a little. When Radiohead start to develop their interesting "panning" instrumentation you immediately pause the video to describe that sound, but in doing so you interrupt the sound and flow, taking us out of the moment. I feel it would be better if you let the moment run so that we all hear it along with you, and then share your thoughts after the effect you describe has been allowed to play. Just a small thing, but in my opinion the pauses are not well timed.
