I know you probably won't see this, but this song is essentially a suicide note. They've basically withdrawn from everything. He just wants a quiet life and garden. (He wants to die with a beautiful dignity) quietly. No matter where he lives he just wants a good silent death, which explains his "hand shake of carbon monoxide" all that takes is an enclosed garage and a running car. I've personally always translated that final line of "such a pretty house and such a pretty garden" as the thoughts of the person or people finally coming across his dead body. That's the first thing they notice about him. A pretty house and garden followed by his dead body. With that thought in mind it just makes the last words spoken a lot heavier to me
2 of my brother's chose carbon monoxide as a release from their lives , no one can know the depth of despair & despondency a person can fall to ever , I admire and respect my brother's who chose that moment to go , what strength of character to say that's it , no more pain , ever xx
I suggest you guys listen to "The Trickster" by Radiohead. It's definitely a more obscure track, but still amazing and in my opinion should've been on The Bends album
It’s a stream of consciousness. Observing that the world was already inadequate . You have to think about it in the context of the entire album “Ok Computer” at the turn of century was, “here’s this magic box that will solve a bunch of problems- Ok Computer, GO”. Like do something to help the little guy. If hope springs eternal, their was skeptical hope that it would bring about positive tangible political change.
Never attempt to dissect a Radiohead song, they know what the songs mean they throw a red herring most of the time so really listening it makes most sense..
So many great Radiohead songs out there. You could try Reckoner, Nude, Jigsaw Falling Into Place, Optimistic, How to Disappear Completely, Exit Music (for a film)
I just realized the line “a handshake of carbon monoxide” is like a friendly handshake with a friend and then everything turns to toxic or something like that I can’t really explain it.
I think you hit the nail on the head with a Libertarian ethos. No one signed up for tax and debt servitude. We all want a pretty house and garden with no alarms and no surprises..
Bro, to the dude. I read social cues. No further typing is necessary. You know exactly what im talking about. Im sorry, man. And thats the reaction i wanted. Yours. Not the performers. I wanted exactly what you gave, because you know. You.. know.
_I take a quiet life_ can also be like being living dead, same as actually be dead, as shaking hands with carbon monoxide. As a quiet life can be pointless, you might as well be dead.
Great song, good review. This song could have several meanings, I think you generally get the idea, wishful thinking, thoughts of escape, death, tranquility, not wanting to be here - could be a combo. I myself think of those things constantly, all of them. But in it's own weird way, tells me to see the tranquility and possible hope of continuing on - I've had enough surprises! Sorry for the dark thoughts. Good job!
there are 50 countries repeating that melody all around the world evereday...and when and which year somebody come back to iisten yours? better clean the monoxide from your throats...we are at 2023...and they still sound "no surprising" like an anthem...and..yours.....???????

Perfect description of this wonderful song mate.
Pretty much my interpretation, and the arpegiated music is the sound of the ambulance all through the song.
Won't see this? He literally says he is taking a long handshake with carbon monoxide
And also the reason he says, "no alarms"... aka carbon monoxide detector.
No it is not. The entire album is criticism of the dull monotony of modern life
More Radiohead please

Radiohead has so many great songs, and "OK Computer" is a masterpiece. Maybe try "Paranoid Android" next?
Or Airbag.
Or 'Climbing Up The Walls'
Such a pretty but dark song

Listen to their song 'Nude' from the album In Rainbows 🙏🏻

funny how you bring up political change when they crossed the picket line
first timer here. really appreciated your lyrical breakdown as a first time react. killer takes.
I don't understand why anyone would smile and shake their head listening to this song

If i had to kms I choose this as my last song lmao
If it had to be radiohead, I would go with pyramid song. 😅
I think I would go with Motion Picture Soundtrack, Fog, or maybe True Love Waits. But I would like to think that I would never get to that point.
I remember locking myself in my garage & turning my cars engine on.....If you get to this stage in life...then look for help.
this song is about life like we are living in a matrix with no alarms and no surprises programed to obey
it is sacrificing safety for security.
Fantastic…you should get into “RADIOHEAD-Paranoid Android (album version)

such a pretty house and such a pretty garden could be a cemetery

Maybe there is too much dissection of this song in this vid. Just enjoy it for what it is. It's a song! That's what they do as artists!
Beautiful song
It's about the inescapable paradoxes of life.
pure talent

I guess this song is about the last moment after he commit suicide. But I am not sure.
He wants some alarms and surprises. Otherwise it's just routine.
Karma police -Radiohead
Radiohead's Comfortably Numb ?
FAKE PLASTIC TREES, as soon as you can, unbelievably good.
