From Lyric Interpretations: This song is about suicide. A heart full up like a landfill. A job that slowly kills you. Bruises that won’t heal, captures perfectly how you feel when you’ve finally had enough. A quiet life, a handshake of Carbon Monoxide is not an allegory about pollution or climate change, it’s simply the method in which to make it all stop. I’ve always believed the chorus is essentially a lyrical DNR order. If you find me in time, don’t try and save me, don’t hook me up to machines. No alarms, no surprises. Just let me go. “This is my final fit. My final bellyache” speaks for itself. “Such a pretty house. Such a pretty garden” I’ve always thought as the final hallucination before the brain dies. The hope of an afterlife. A pretty house with a pretty garden. Somewhere peaceful where I can finally rest, free from the pain of the world I’ve left behind.
Agree though i always pictured it a bit more literally with a guy in his car on the drive with the exhaust piped into the car looking out over his house and garden and taking the carbon monoxide handshake.
YES finally someone who agrees. SUCH A PRETTY HOUSE SUCH A PRETTY GARDEN is so obviously the dude arriving to heaven or whatever afterlife and its beautiful
i took it to be the song for the unsettled soul that is checking out of life because whatever that dream is that you have in the hand, the soul can never be satisfied by it even when you have it. it just does not fulfil that unquiet soul inside, build all the shinny towers of your imagination, the pretty house, the pretty gardens, the pretty life but it still is never enough to quell the malcontent. our free spirit inside can't accept it and so it takes it's last look and checks out.
When I was back in my early 20s I was very close to unaliving myself due to a very severe undiagnosed sleep disorder. This song was (and still is) very close to my heart.
I would love to hear you guys react to "Everything In Its Right Place," which was the first track off their album Kid A from 2000. That album marked such a major evolution in Radiohead's style, and from the very first 5 notes, you hear it.
It's a sleepy song cause that's what we want. That's what he's saying. So we can have our beautiful garden. We are unhappy but we do nothing cause at the end we like our little comfort.
2 + 2 = 5 is a banger, so is Burn the Witch. Idioteque is too in a different way. So many good songs though!! You could throw a dart at OK Computer, for example, and that whole album is solid, choose anything.
I genuinely love how you guys take time to discuss stuff beforehand, and leave multiple minutes afterwards to thoroughly discuss meaning and how you feel. A lot of other reactors simply let the song end, say a few dull words, and end the video. You guys are genuine and I respect the fuck out of that. Now listen to the song Jigsaw Falling Into Place and get ready to bump your head like you've never done before
One of the most beautiful songs ever written...up there with 'What a wonderful world' by Louis Armstrong. More Radiohead please, try The Pyramid Song and drop some acid beforehand...
My eyes perked up when you said RH songs are like lullabies, because the first time I heard this song (way back in the day), I nicknamed it the "Lullaby From Hell."
Thom's range and ability to be so flexible, switch in mid-note makes him Top 5 for sure. Listen to The Smile's album. A voice I can't hear enough is Robin Pecknold from Fleet Foxes. His tone and emotion are ethereal. Great job guys. You're one of my fave reactors. Genuine dudes. Peace.
Funny you said “I want to take a nap”… when I had my daycare job, I made a playlist of lullaby versions of rock songs to play during the kids’ nap time, and this was the first song 😴 I believe this is a song about a suicidal person. Thom went through a bit of hell making the official video 😩
This is one of those songs that got locked in for me during a really difficult time in my life. The whole album is like instant time travel, but this song in particular can completely floor me if I hear it unexpectedly.
I LOVE my Thom. He is my fav male vocalist after Chris Cornell. I saw Thom live a few years ago and I gotta say, it was another kind of experience. He just oozes genius lolol
Great reaction. Love this song! It's like a lullaby. From this same album, you NEED to do Lucky! I think it's my favourite from OK Computer. From there, you need to do Street Spirit (Fade Out) (especially if you think Thom's voice is great - this further solidifies it!)
You might enjoy watching the video in your own time…it’s very surreal. Thom looked like he nearly drowned making it, when you see you’ll understand. There’s a b-side track called lozenge of love, by them, that’s got a similar ish vibe…one of my favourites of theirs
Since you mention it, my top 5 alternative rock singers would be: Thom York (Radiohead), Matt Bellamy (Muse), Brian Aubert (Silversun Pickups), Brandon Boyd (Incubus) and Brian Molko (Placebo)
A genuine reaction. This is one of my all time favourite albums. 2 of my deaerest friends have been buried to this song, another to Paranoid Andoird from the same album. My sister has a recurring nightmare of her and I dying in a car listening to this album, so we're not allowed to listen to it in in a motor ever lol. If this song doesn't make you cry like a school girl, you have no emotions. Seeing them like is pure and visceral, especially as they don't play that often.
You guys should react to more Radiohead. Anything off their album In Rainbow's would be awesome! Top 3 songs for me would Bodysnatchers, Nude and Weird Fishes.
Ben Weinman, the guitarist and songwriter for The Dillinger Escape Plan, has talked about this album being monumentally influential on him. I mean, that's how amazing Radiohead is, they have a hand in Dillinger's sound. Amazing.
Top 5 alternative rock vocalists ( no order): Robert Smith ( Cure), Billy Corgan ( Pumpkins), Dave Gahan( Depeche Mode), Michael Stipe (REM), Thom Yorke.
They opened the last show I went to with a very similar song, "Daydreaming." The lights, the way his voice echoed, the starkness....chills. You'd think to start with a banger, but that just sucked you right in. Ethereal.
Radiohead is the culmination or many genres rolled into one. The early stuff was kind of grungy. They morphed into the sound you hear on this song. And have gone more experimental and electronic ever since. But through all of that they still borrow from so many different kinds of music. They can be soft and jazzy one minutes and hard and angry the next. But you are spot on about Thom. He is a master at pulling you in and making you feel whatever he is feeling. Radiohead definitely one of the all time greatest bands. And the reason they don’t get recognized in the mainstream is mostly by choice. They have broken away from the norm and chosen to release their music their own way and not be controlled the way most artists are traditionally.
I would love to see you listen to "I Promise" from the same album. Thom York's voice is other-worldly. Radiohead doesn't make music for your ears, they create food for the soul.
if you want to hear some amazing vocals, Check out Alice In Chains "man in the box" (live at the moore theatre." Laynes vocals in that song are fucking incredible. Also, Down in a hole (unplugged) is also an absolute banger
Ok Computer is an excellent album, but when I heard Kid A and then Amnesiac my pants fell off. I have a lot of respect for bands that dare to do a 180º turn in their style and sound. I can't get enough of watching your videos guys, your content shows that you love music, I really appreciate that. Thank you!
I'd have to give the Top 5 Alternative Vocalists to the following: 1: Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) 2: Kurt Cobain (Nirvana) 3: Thom Yorke (Radiohead) 4: Matt Bellamy (Muse) 5: Michael Stipe (R.E.M)
The ultimate voice of an angel - listen to "Wild Horses" cover from The Sundays! Her voice is nothing short of celestial. The song has been in a lot of movies and shows
If you want to hear a wonderful song where Thom(singer) performs it solo with piano and synths, search for Thom Yorke Bloom First hit on the search from Thom Yorke's own channel, amazing performance. I think the viewers might have their minds blown. It's a truly emotional piece, absolutely fantastic.
So I'm not a big radiohead fan, but my brother loves them and thinks they're better than Tool lol. I know that's not possible, but there have been discussions about that none the less. Love the reaction guys.
I've always seen them as the "Pink Floyd" of the 90's,/2000's. This song you're missing out on the Video, it's one that needs to be seen with the song...Thom almost drowns. Dig the vibes Guys. You get Music.
You guys should check out the music video for this track even if it's just on your own time. It's definitely worth it. It was done all in one take and it's super cool, but also kinda haunting knowing the meaning of the song.
Thank you guys soooo much for doing Radiohead. My 2 favorite bands are Tool and Radiohead. Tool is probably one step higher for me as a band but the best album I’ve ever heard from start to finish is OK Computer. Keep it real fellas ✌🏼also please do Street Spirit. It’s my favorite song of all time.
One of my great regrets is not paying attention to Radiohead back in the 90s. I was too dialed in to Grunge and Britpop. It wasn't until _Kid A_ that I tuned into them and realized what I'd been missing. Such a pretty house and such a pretty garden , to me says it's just not enough and unless you can find a like minded individual to share your life it's all meaningless, 2 of my brother's chose carbon monoxide after the love of their lives betrayed them , I wish this song had been out then , maybe I could have tried to save them having heard this insight . I don't hate anyone, and I respect my brother's choice to release them selves from the pain of a broken heart , the strength to say that's it , no more Rip Wayne & Chris xx
It's just me and my daughter in my house and with me being in a wheelchair, she's with me 9½ times outta 10 when I go out. I come in the house and there's 30 people in my house.....lead gonna be flyin' and bodies droppin'. Jus sayin'! 🤷🏻♂️
My apologies for not remembering your real names, but in my defence I'm never sober when I'm watching reaction vids - I always love how Hollywood has to pretend to not be the world's biggest Radiohead fan on all their vids :D More to the point, I don't think think there's a song that better sums up the current state of Britain, and tells us how we got here, better than this one. this is deep
Street Spirit (Fade Out) 🤘
Great shout
Yesssss
Try just next, The video is probably the best music video ever made! Love it!
That's a MUST
I have a tattoo that says "immerse yourself in love". :)
When I was back in my early 20s I was very close to unaliving myself due to a very severe undiagnosed sleep disorder. This song was (and still is) very close to my heart.
This band is next level for me, they can do no wrong in my book.
Same 🤗
We all lost Hollywood to that one. Great song and one of my favourite Radiohead songs.
I would love to hear you guys react to "Everything In Its Right Place," which was the first track off their album Kid A from 2000. That album marked such a major evolution in Radiohead's style, and from the very first 5 notes, you hear it.
I second this!
You guys are so in touch with your emotions, it was really great to hear your thoughts on this. Thank you for not hiding anything.
It's a sleepy song cause that's what we want. That's what he's saying. So we can have our beautiful garden. We are unhappy but we do nothing cause at the end we like our little comfort.
Now you gotta check out “Let Down”. Another favorite of mine by Radiohead. 💛💛💛
2 + 2 = 5 is a banger, so is Burn the Witch. Idioteque is too in a different way. So many good songs though!! You could throw a dart at OK Computer, for example, and that whole album is solid, choose anything.
Oh hell yeah, 2+2=5 is such a banger! HTTT is really an underrated album of theirs
I would say the same of The Bends as well. Solid gold
if anyone ever does Idioteque my brain will explode
@@Mindbombable Agreed!!
2+2=4
Man, it really must be Christmas. Radiohead is one of my top tier bands. The video for this is crazy as well. Yes, Radiohead journey!
I genuinely love how you guys take time to discuss stuff beforehand, and leave multiple minutes afterwards to thoroughly discuss meaning and how you feel. He has one of the most purely heartbreaking voices in modern music. I can't get enough of it.
Robin has one of the most recognisable voices in the industry ❤️
Funny you said “I want to take a nap”… when I had my daycare job, I made a playlist of lullaby versions of rock songs to play during the kids’ nap time, and this was the first song 😴

There aren’t many surprises after you’ve met carbon monoxide.

plays lyric video; closes eyes whole song 😄

My favourite song of Radiohead
whenever i’m feeling depressed i listen to this song and feel more at peace
this is literally the song that got me into radiohead. i love watching these guys appreciate it as much as i do
I love how you guys breakdown lyrics/songs! It's great!
starts at 6:28 !
I LOVE my Thom. He is my fav male vocalist after Chris Cornell.
I saw Thom live a few years ago and I gotta say, it was another kind of experience.
He just oozes genius lolol
Radiohead... Such a good band... I am so glad i live in this era... still listen to their song till now
Boys,a handshake with carbon monoxide, with no alarms and no surprises, it can't be more clear meaning
Another couple of bands that you might wanna check out, Manic Street Preachers and The Stereophonics. Two Welsh bands that I think you might enjoy.

The album is in a certain order for a purpose and the transition from this song to the next is one of the best switch-ups ever it is chilling.

Fake plastic trees, or paranoid android, great songs by radiohead
thanks for the reaction
Check out ‘Creep’ as the next track for this band. There is a reference to suicide in this song where he refers to a “Handshake of Carbon Monoxide”.
Radiohead is my favorite band of all time. Bold statement, I know. But they are everything.
Nice reaction ! Radiohead never disappoint ! You should listen to Weird Fishes/arpeggi !!
You need to hear The Smiths, the song is called Asleep… the lead singer Morrissey can really sing you to sleep with this song 😌
Try Weird Fishes/Arpeggi or Pyramid Song by Radiohead. Works of genius

Okay y'all asked for it.. a suggestion. Gretchen Wilson: song All Jacked up
This band is similar to Rush , The Beatles and Queen. Hard to fit them into a particular genre. They just sound like Radiohead…
You should try 2+2=5 , a different kind of Radiohead
song so good dude turned his back on his homie
