    PLEASE do not stop making videos!!! i see you have slowed down a lot... and I'm sure that you have something like a life going on, so I don't mean to blindly accost you with guilt about it, but this is the first video of yours that I'm watching and I just love the way you talk about the notes and accords... I can tell you have done a lot of hands-on work with these scents and it's just wonderful the way that you share and express that. I am really infatuated with perfumery, and the way that it mimics music how you build a melody; marry that with the fact that smell is the sense that is the most connected to memory? Please, this is a psychology-art. Don't leave us!!! I'm marching on to watch as much of your videos as I can digest!!!! Thank you so much!!

    Oh wow I thought when an ex boyfriend wrote me a song and sung it to me that it was the best gift ever but to have a guy take the time and actually make a perfume just for me, well that’s just the most beautiful and loving thing anyone can do. I’d treasure it forever. I’ve seen professional perfumers say it sometimes takes them up to a year to create the most perfect perfume for them. That’s awesome

    I just bought a number of these materials and some random ones I wanted to try. So excited to start blending things together. This was a really useful guide, but it was difficult to pare it down without any real reference point. I ended up getting a couple from each category, then subbing out some of the more expensive stuff... Like tobacco absolute is pretty pricey, so I got hay absolute instead because I always thought a Nicaraguan cigar had a musty hay smell to it. I'd like to see what you'd buy for under 300 dollars material cost, like ultra beginner stuff.

      I have hay absolute...and to me it doesnt really smell much like tobacco absolute. it has its purpose...but if you want tobacco alternatives, check out TOBACOROL which smells like a cedar chest that held cigars in them.....or TABANONE which has a spicy tobacco twist

    This video is a great resource! I'll likely be getting several of your suggestions.
    Sidenote: I know this is a 3-year-old video, and you may know this by now, but "allspice" is not just a blend of all the spices. It's its own spice, just like nutmeg or cinnamon, and it just happens to be named Allspice.

    Man, thanks so much for putting this together. I saw that you have newer videos on the same topic, but I just wanted to mention that this answered a lot of the questions many videos on other channels just plain didn't.
    I'm building a brand, and once that brand is significantly large I'm going to use that as a platform to launch subsidiary brands like a fragrance one, so this has been really helpful with considering different levels of preparation that'll go into being ready for that once it's time for a launch.

    Can’t thank you enough I already have so many things that I bough since perhaps two years ago, and until I learned the dilitoution lesson two or three days ago from this channel I was would never know why most of my creations smell the same. It’s because of these very strong notes that no matter how little I try to put they would still overwhelm or stay present. In fact I now see that investing in a good scale right away is a must I always counted drops This very lesson ( this video ) is super informative you made me see that I can one day create something to be proud of.
    I can get some essential oils from the Middle East and North Africa for much less that the prices you mentioned here but I’ll see a way to try and buy me a full kit of your recommenced hand picked choices because I been watching you for a few days now. And I can tell that you put a big effort into choosing these particular ones. So I’ll be taking a Great Leap Forward if only I can get me this whole big kit of today’s lesson
    I was just thinking why not store every thing in a dedicated fridge just so I keep my bottles with pipette I just order them yesterday as soon as I realized I must dilute but I’ll be a good student and follow your instructions to the T

    Yo ! You just cost me a lot of money, Buster. Thanks, and it occurred to me that instead of covering a wood table with plastic sheets it's better to use a non-absorbent and scent-free material like Formica. I recently spilled a beaker of Iso E Super on an old varnished table and it ruined the surface. Your videos are a great help for newbies like me.

    Firstly, thanks so much for the useful info! Your content makes many people happy.
    Very interesting for me would be to know a bit about the toxicity of these raw materials while sniffing them nonstop. Say I start experimenting, with no previous knowledge about chemistry or perfumes, and I rely simply on my nose and creativity. So this is a lot of hours of smelling per day for many days, weeks or months. What are the health risks? Thank you very much!

    Great video, good explanation of content. However I would like to let you know that 'Amber' is actually a fossilized resin from extinct trees much like our pine trees today. Amber can indeed be melted with low heat (about 250 c) and when it is melted certain ambers may give off a very pungent odor many find off-putting, due to the acids contained within.

    I just found this video and I'm glad I did. So much information! I'll need to watch it several times. Question: once I've created my fragrance, can I then use it in a formulation for a lotion, body scrub, or body mist? If so, what percentage would be best? Thank you!

    • @bkscents7050
      @bkscents7050  3 года назад +5

      This is a tough one. A formula usually is made specifically for the end product type. Youll find that a formula you made intended for a alcoholic perfume spray may not work so well in a lotion or soap. While you can use the same materials, but youll have to tweak it (the formula) for the intent of the final product. Some materials behave differently in their final end product.

      It was great! Rachel my instructor was awesome, we had some good laughs all day! We started in the beginner room just making a more simple fragrance getting used to mixing and matching scents. Made my very first fragrance here. Then we went into the artisan perfume lab and did a blind smell test which was super interesting! After that we made a key accord to go into my final fragrance. I made pina colada because it fit the profile I was going for. After that Rachel and I started working on and dialing in my final scent which turned out so much different than I had imagined it. I think thats the tricky part about creating is trying to make a scent that you have in your mind by melding the mats together to create that vision. Although it was different that what I had envisioned its still really nice! She showed me how to dilute although I wouldnt know what ratio to dilute certain materials if I had to. The ratios, percentages, math, and just focus/detailed recording you need will probably be the toughest. I was considering getting their beginner perfume kit. Can you take a look at it on their website and see if its a good one or if I should just go with your lists

      I wouldnt bother with their $40 beginners kit, because it just a bunch of their 'house accords" in which there are many better accords/bases available. Their beginners Aroma chemical kit however is pretty good to start with, but youll still want to pick up a few good bases from IFF/Givaudan (givco)/Firmenich. Things like Rose Givco, Oakmoss Givco, Casis Base, Jasmine Base, etc......also will want to pick up a few naturals too like bergamot oil, lemon oil, cedarwood oil, etc

      Yeah I was looking at the 250$ one that comes with like 50 different materials. Only thing is my girlfriend works at doterra, which makes essential oils, so idk if I should just buy the aroma chemicals and crystals etc from PA and get the eo's from doterra? Might just stick with the kit because I wouldnt know what rations to dilute some of the eo's off the start anyways

    Thank you very much for the info. I've never worn or been into using cologne because anytime I smelled something a friend of mine used or went to a store I literally gagged at the smell. I found a specific scent I really like recently, but the pricetag on it is outrageous so I figured i could make my own and you've explained everything so well that I'm confident I can do it. Thank you for sharing all your information through your own trials and errors. As well as being very good at describing each scent, why they're used, and how they're used. Invaluable information, really appreciate it.

    I got pure Oud oil, $25 for 6ml on eBay. Very potent and long lasting. Just from handling the bottle I get the smell on my fingers which will transfer to my clothes and where I touch my skin or hair, it lasts multiple showers. 6 ML of this is a lot. I think I could make gallons of fragrance with it because you will only need a trace amount or it will be too much for Americans noses.

    First of all, thank you for all the time and effort you've put into sharing your perfumery wisdom! I blame your videos for getting me hooked on this hobby :) Secondly, where I live in Europe they do not sell "perfumer's alcohol" (SDA 40B), however I can find many different kinds of alcohol through a lab-supply company. Since SDA 40B is denatured using toxic chemicals, wouldn't it be better for the skin to use pure food-grade ethanol? I'm finding very mixed opinions online, so I was curious to find out what your take is on this!

    I wish I would have seen this video before I started purchasing oils for getting started. It's crazy how much money I threw away on amazon before finding out how much I could get from perfumer's apprentice for a fraction of the price. Plus, I have no clue what I'm doing. I'm learning a lot though and this would have been a great starting point for me. luckily, I haven't actually received my perfumer's alcohol yet, so I at least know to dilute my stuff before attempting to compose. That will save me a lot of money that I otherwise would have throw away using mostly 100% concentration oils.

      @@bkscents7050 Thanks. You seem really knowledgeable and like an all-around charismatic, cool guy. Since I work as a massage therapist, I already had some essential oils and stumbled upon the fact that that's exactly what is used in perfumes (a big part of it, at least). From there, I've started learning perfumery. I hope one day I can be as skilled as you are with fragrances.

    • @gaara2960
      @gaara2960 3 года назад

      At how much did you dilute? :) I did it before with 20% , but I took now all my 20% and make 10% from it to make it better I was working with 100drops to finish my blend but I think thats not the best way 😆

    • @donnypodcast
      @donnypodcast 3 года назад +1

      @@gaara2960 I'm currently using 20% for practice and then using the full strength stuff for the real blend, unless it comes with an msds that talks about skin sensitization hazards, then I read up and try to find where the maximum safe concentration is and try to make sure that I'm well below that.
      It would be good to see a video about dangerous aroma chemicals and what are that highest concentrations you'd want to work with. I found out that some of them (like tobacco and cedar wood) are recommended to be used at less than 1% concentration for the solution.
      Unfortunately, I had already applied some of my perfume on myself (it smelled fantastic, loved it) but then found out that I may end up with a blistering allergic reaction up a week from the day it was applied, if I overdid it.
      That freaked me out because I was using a harsh soap at the time, the weather was cool and dry. My skin was starting to crack and itch, and I was worried that that was just the beginning of a disfiguring mistake.
      I'll give it a few days. Hopefully I'll be feeling fine by then. But lesson learned: read the MSDS and try to find a maximum safe concentration to limit yourself to.
      It would be very handy if BK did a video all about several hazardous aroma chemicals and just listing their maximum safe concentrations for the total solution.

    • @donnypodcast
      @donnypodcast 3 года назад

      @@gaara2960 I started off with 20% dilutions, but quickly realized how strong that is. Plus the SDS has some chemicals, like black agar listed as a Skin category 1, which means that a 1% concentration of that material can blister you.
      So I remade 5% dilutions of almost every aroma chemical that I have. I'm glad I did, because some things, like calone will really dominate a perfume if you add just one more drop of it at a 5% concentration.
      Now I see why BK uses 1% concentrations.
      I accidentally added an extra drop of an aroma chemical and I had to scrap the whole project because of how powerful that one drop of 5% was.
