YES! weight to volume measuring for perfumes is an older way of compounding. Jacques Guerlain weight his solid materials; he would use volume measurements for the liquid materials.
So on your last comment about being stuck at 10% dilution, would you then formulate to 20% dilution and if scaling back to say EDT you would dilute your 20% dilution further? Total newbie here so apologies for the maybe simple questions ;) Thanks again for your great content for DIY perfumers looking to learn.
It's best to keep your materials in 2 separate types of bottles. 1 bottle will be your "working/tinkering" usage...and that would be the bottle that's diluted down to like 10-20% for testing and trials. Then also keep the same material "neat/undiluted" in another bottle, this way if your trial batches are done and you are satisfied with the formula....you can recreate it again using the full strength materials and now you can make the finished bottle concentration (edt, edp,parfum,etc) to your liking because you are making it using full strength materials and you can add in your Perfumers alcohol ratio to what ever you wish

Given that the IFRA guidelines seem to be given at the "fragrance concentrate" level (which I assume means our formula not the end product perfume), changing 1 material could mean you now exceed the max on another. Decreasing sandalwood could mean that your oakmoss now exceeds 0.1% in your formula.
If I were to make a biger batch of a fragrance, instead of using dilution, would you recommend to switch to neat products so it is of better “quality” ?

@BKScents it's ok to buy all the format 2mg and than to dilute manually? Or for some chemicals aroma 2 mg raw it's a little bit anyway? (a parte iso, hedione, galax etc etc that clearly I buy more)
That is entirely up to you. Some people don't dilute materials at all. This just means they have to work in much larger formulation batches to get accurate dosing of each material.

I have a few videos talking about diluting materials, yes. But each material will need its own different dilution ratio based on its performance strength and how odorous it is. Every material is different...some will requite minimal dilution, some will require it diluted down to 10%, and some super strong monster materials need to go down to 1% or even 0.1%. It really depends on the material in question, and ya just have to play with them a bit to determine how low it needs to go based on how you dose it.
TGSC (the good scents company) website has tons and tons of demo fragrance formulas, and thats the best starting point to see which/what materials are used often, and by how much...so you can get an idea or average use of specific materials....and then from there decide what dilution would work best for you based on those averages.
Can you please tell me as to how do you dilute your orange, lemon, ginger, saffron, cinamon, sandalwood, wild rose oil. Please accept my apologies for asking a totally wierd question as I even need to know whether all these need to be diluted or not.
You really don't have to predilute anything if you don't want to. It just means your trial batch size (weight/volume) when you are experimenting will be much larger. And It really depends on the quality and type of material you have, if they are essential oils, absolutes or synthetics. But orange and lemon (EO) i would start with diluting to 20%, ginger EO i would take down to 5%, saffron and cinnamon probably 1%, sandalwood oil and rose oil down to 5% and tinker at those dilutions for easier dosing.

So if you were making a small bottle of a 10% dilution of something....you would weight out 1gr of the raw material and then 9gr of your dilutant....and that would give you 10grams of a 10% solution

You sure can. It all just depends on what your end medium is going to be (alcohol spray, candle, soap, lotion, etc) will dictate what dilution type you will use.

Sir as a beginner I myself find it confusing to work with essential oils. Therefore, I am trying to hands on first with available perfume oils in market. For example, I bought 08 ml of a designer fragrance (Gucci Rush) oil that is 100% concentrated (as claimed by the seller). I want to make a 100 ml spray perfume with it. I am thinking to use 5% galaxolide, 5% Distilled water, 08 ml fragrance oil, 16 ml DPG (15 gms) and 66 ml Ethanol. Please advise if this formulation is correct? especially the fragrance oil and DPG dilution to ease the cost. Please help.

If you want 30mL total, you would have 29.7mL solvent (DPG, TEC, PA) and 0.3mL of Fragrance

For the most part, yes. I pretty much use just perfumers alcohol for dilutions. Sometimes i may use DPG...but thats VERY rare.

The most pervasive smells I’ve found so far are coconut, and clove oil. I’m going to dilute those massively or they just take over everything.
clove oil (euginol) is pretty strong indeed. I keep mine pre-diluted to 1% when I tinker with blends.

Dont mix weight (grams) with Volume (ml). Do it all by weight. Take 5gm of coumarin and 5g of alcohol for a 50% dilution.
