Same! I heard the beginning of what they played and I thought, “wait this actually sounds really nice!” And I was not disappointed by this video! So gorgeous👏🏼👏🏼
This performance is just too breathtakingly beautiful!! You are among my fave violists, especially with your Walton and Bruch recordings. Keep sharing your performances please!! #violalove
As a violist, I am so glad I didn't see this performance live as I'd have made a scene. When this was over at home I started clapping, got up, hopped a little and shouted 'F*** yes, Marc!' haha I mean the tone, the legato connectedness of those double stops in the second half, man I think this is the best performance of the Vieuxtemps I've heard.
I've been showing this video to all of my first and second year string players and most of them can determine that this sounds like 'someone who passed away'. It's amazing how much emotion and story telling is conveyed from this performance. Amazing!
What an absolute beautiful interpretation of this piece. I used to play viola in the garden state philharmonic but my career and family put that in the back burner so to speak. However, my son cane to me , unprovoked and said he wants to play viola just like his mom ♥️. He started private lessons this year and is progressing very well. I showed him this video and he was in awe. Thank you for sharing how incredibly beautiful the usually overlooked viola truly is.
I’m not normally a huge fan of this piece, but this rendition was quite impressive. I’ve played through it a few times, and it’s not overwhelming difficult from a technical standpoint, but the musicality really makes or breaks it, and you nailed it. Very well done.
Making the trill in the third measure from the upper note is such a wonderful choice, that gives impulse to the melody by avoiding it to crash on the repeating of the note. And it produces a savoury dissonance a flat/g.
Thank you for sharing 🙏🏻 I constantly find myself revisiting this video. You create such a wonderful mood from start to finish and the sound coming from your viola converses with the heart. I even enjoy the sigh that comes from someone lucky enough to be in the audience at 3:32. Again, thank you.
I am in tears. The very best performance of this piece, my favourite viola solo, I've ever heard. It does not sound like a capriccio...rather the true aspect of hommage, sorrowful, as though longing for Paganini. Exceptional interpretation as you portray this brilliantly. Bravo 👏
I love the way you play this piece... I'm just beginning to learn the viola, and I'm in love with this piece. Trying to play it myself, it just sounds so horrible hahah... someday, I hope to reach your level. Please keep showing us your videos. Your interpretation of this piece is my favorite from all the videos and audio I've seen and heard so far.
I just watched the twosetviolin video where they attempt to play this. Just by listening to them play a bit, I could tell that this is a beautiful piece. And I wasn't disappointed. This is really brilliant. I want to find more interesting viola pieces as I've only been listening to violin stuff. Can any of you give me some recommendations?
Dear Marc, I'm professional violonist. Usually I never comment video of musician but since one week I'm listening you and you are just so musical. A true artist. And also I'm learning viola actually as my new hobby ! You have convinced me to learn this piece who is such beautiful. All my best for your musical life, Hildegarde
Merci beaucoup Hildegarde. J'ai aussi ecouté tes vidéos. Bravo...tu joues super bien. Peut-être nos chemins se croiseront dans le future. Good luck with viola, it's addictive. Marc
Glad to hear it. I am based in Brussels, Belgium. I do teach, both privately and at the Royal Conservatory of Mons in the south of Belgium. Are you studying at the moment?
Marc Sabbah That’s great! I am from the United States and I am currently preparing to audition for several conservatories. I’ve had the chance to work with Yizhak Schotten, Peter Slowik, Dimitri Murrath, Paul Coletti, and many others. It would be a great opportunity to work with someone like you, but obviously distance would be an issue. Where did you attend school?
Great, sounds like you're on your way! You can read all about my history at www.marcsabbah.com. I studies at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in the Netherlands. I think Europe is a great place to make music and if you'd like, you are welcome to come audition to the conservatory where I teach now. It would be an opportunity to speak/learn french and live in Europe.
Wow that is quite a performance. I was moved by it on RUclips. I can’t imagine what it was like in the audience. I know the trick with the Jargar A string ;). I played that Capriccio a while ago. I think I’ll have to play it again. Your viola sounds very rich, even and colourful. I would be curious to know a little bit more about it. Year maker ? Thanks. Found the answer on your website. ;)
Out of curiosity what's the trick with the jargar A? I've been trying to find a suitable A string to mellow the upper register of my viola (which is a lot brighter than the other strings).
I use a Jargar A string and the D,G & C strings are all Eva Pirazzi or Eva Pirazzi Gold. The Gold are not much different than the normal Eva Pirazzis, only more expensive :)
Hi Eric, It really depends on your viola. I suggest you try them both and play them in for a few days as the strings change character. I feel Jargar works best on my viola.
Isnt it a real shame that most of the people listening to this are older folks? (Don’t get me wrong, Nothing wrong with older people listening, I just wish more young people liked this instead of the brain damage inducing rubbish that’s popular today)
If you can’t say anything nice, better to not say anything at all sometimes 🙃 It’s a beautiful piece played with wonderful feeling and flawless technique.

This is a perfect demonstration of the expressive abilities of the viola. Marc Sabbah is a truly remarkable musician.
Thank you so much
Wasted years of my life playing Violin and Cello until I found my Viola. Nothing compares to the haunting resonance....
I found this piece from one of twosetviolin's recent videos. So, I came here to hear how it actually sounds. It's a very beautiful piece. :)
It just casually appears in my recommendation after the video LOL
Me 2 :)
Me too!

I am a violist myself and i remember listening to this song so many times when I was in orchestra. Man is this so passionate. Thanks!
Not a song
Until recently I've never heard this piece, I wonder why, it's such a masterpiece, it should be among the more famous pieces
I agree with you 100%

This recording is absolutely stunning. The pinnacle of musicality and viola playing!!! Thank you Maestro for your incredible artistry 🙏🏻♥️

First time hearing it, and Im astounded. More minutes to come
Sweep, intelligent and emotionally moving phrasing, and impeccable technique...just a beautiful performance of this thrilling piece!
Thank you so much.
