If there is enough interest, I would consider doing a live playthrough of A Boy and His Blob on Twitch. Give this pinned comment a like and if it gets over 100 likes I will do it. Thanks!
Jason I'm just getting my Twitch account registered. I have normally livestreamed on RUclips and this would be my first time on Twitch. I will post my tag here once I get it all lined out.
I’m only 28 and was surprised when the 40 yr old across the street hadn’t played this title. Luckily he has a cartridge that’s hacked so we can play any game ever made for nes, showed him this game, freakin loves it.
We had this game, and I remember being impressed by the concept at the time, but I also mostly remember being frustrated by this game and giving up on it.
This game will always have a special place in my heart. When I was about 4 or 5 years old, my dad and I would play this game and draw out maps on large pieces of paper. My dad died not long after and we never finished the game together. Over the last 30 years, I've gotten to the end of the game, but still haven't beaten it.
This is one of two NES games I got as a gift from my dad when I was a kid! (One of the few memories I have left of him, unfortunately) He got it for me for Christmas along with Wheel of Fortune Junior Edition, and I couldn't stop playing it, even though I had NO idea what I was doing. I remember figuring out how to make it to Blobolonia a few times but dying immediately to the Cherry Bombs and never getting farther than that. Good memories though! I loved the video! (You're getting craftier with Mullet Boy, I like it!)
I have this game and beat it back in the day. I'll never understand how we were able to figure out such obtuse games before the internet, that's the advantage of youth's having so much time and so little else to do I guess. I always wanted the GB sequel, but never got it. One of my favorite things in this game is that you can slide off of ledges and the boy just hangs in the air until he notices and looks down, Wile E Coyote style! You can even try to run back to the ledge before he falls. That was always fun.
Sometimes just talking about it in the playground helped. Someone at school showed me how to progress further in pokemon red/blue and obtain a dratini all without the internet(which i didnt have access too in that time)
This game was weird and totally had the feel of an Atari game for the NES, but I absolutely loved it as a kid. It was the 2nd game I legitimately beat (after NES Ducktails and prior to the original Legend of Zelda), and for that it will always have a special place in my heart.
I really enjoyed this game as a kid. My grandpa got it for me for my birthday when it came out. Sometimes I would just stay on the main screen and just feed him the different beans and watch all the stuff he could do. Good times
This was the game I got for Christmas when I also got my NES. The box art really captured my imagination but at 5 years old and being used to Atari games and simple nes titles like Super Mario I didn't understand how to play this. It frustrated me to no end. Now as an adult I get it and I can beat it in minutes but the negative impact on my childhood is always there. I don't play it anymore due to my mixed feelings about it but I still have my original cart and will never get rid of it.
@@GenerationGapGaming I'm telling ya, if I didn't a) stop and rewind to make sure of David's name and b) make that "joke" and long-ish comment, I wouldve won the FIRST TO SPOT MULLET BOY AWARD OF THE UNIVERSE CHALLENGE... next time, I just make the comment, then edit it afterwards for the laughs
most youtubers that do game reviews are doing it to make money. With you, I can tell you have love for what you do. You put so much detail in your reviews. I mean, you even show the instructions books for the games. Like I said, I can tell you have a deep love for reviewing retro games and I appreciate that. I love you content and keep doing your thing. Dont worry about the haters for they are your biggest fans.
Great video as always. I thought that this was one of the more creative games produced on the NES. As a kid it was mind blowing and today, my 6 year old son played it and loved it. The game holds up and has wonderful replay value. Tiny mullet boy head at 6:31 ketchup.
I grew up with it, the eerie atmosphere and the feeling you could die from all kinds of things (even with the lack of many enemies) really drove the game for me. And the running off a ledge and the guy does a cartoon run back thing before falling is so classic.
This game was truly ahead of its time. One of my favs growing up. It was just so different from everything out at the time. I loved those offbeat games like this, Maniac Mansion, etc... they definitely don't get enough retro love.
This is my childhood. I just beat it for he first time a few months back and I love it. It was extremely tough for me as a kid but it is so nostalgic for me. Great video as always!
I've loved this game since the 1st time I played it. Everyone else I know can't stand it. Maybe if I show them this video, it'll help change their minds. Either way, thank you for this and all your other videos. Loved everything I've seen so far! Keep up the great work! And I'm with you on the ketchup sentiment 100%. I use hot sauce instead. It's like adult ketchup, but actually tastes good.
I remember this game one of my older brothers found it on the NYC subway It was beat up and looked a bit singed but it worked! and we loved it.Me and my 2 older brothers tried to figure out to do and no dice until one of them saw it at a video store to rent and we did only to see the instructions lol.We figured it out but never got that door open missing that important jellybean bag.
This game is on my to-play list! Thanks for the tips, Tyler! I finished The Goonies 2 using your tips and a little help from a guide 😉 I wonder if it would have been a better port on GBA. It could have used a “hold L + B” option to cycle quickly through beans (I see the stop and start aspect often cited as a flaw). Another great job!!
Such a highly underrated game! I wish more games were just one big puzzle to figure out, but I guess the replay value wouldn't hold up. I'm sad I just found your channel today, but i'll be going through your video library for the next week for sure haha Keep retro alive dude! I'm glad to see i'm not the only one holding up that title haha
Thanks for showing me why I couldn't beat this game! XD I got to Bloblonia but all i can remember was going through those screens with the bouncy things and dying. Also just noticed your WV hat in the intro. Hi neighbor!
This was a really interesting episode. I have never played this before and honestly knew little to nothing about it. Crazy how much you taught me here. I had no idea they made this in 6 weeks. Thats some crazy E.T like development time. Great episode G3!
This game was unique for sure, but I enjoyed it in my younger years. It was a rental I got a few times and of course I never finished the game but it intrigued me. Today, I enjoy emulation in my free time (usually before bed) and after watching the review it's on my hitlist. Thank you!
Cool video man. I played it as a kid but got frustrated with it. I remember renting it one Friday night. We had a rental store through the woods behind my house. It was fun walking there on Friday nights, as this became like a weekly ritual when we were young. Thanks once again for the nostalgia man.
I love this game and always did as a kid. It was a game we owned and had no choice but to learn to love it. I really wish you would do a video on the nes shadow gate. Would really like to see your thoughts on it. Love the channel!
I loved playing this game back in the day. Even though you do not hear the game music in the video, it kept playing in my head the whole time. Great review. :)
One glitch I found when I originally played the game. Created a hole on solid ground. Have the walk back and forth in/out of the hole rapidly and call the blob. Done correctly the boys feet will be a pixel or two under ground allowing you to walk through screens you normally couldn't. There is a spot in the underground if you do this you can walk all the way to the final boss and passed leafing to a poem about a cat in a tree.
Really enjoyed this video , and channel. Second video Ive seen, and since I grew up on these retro games (This was one of those games I played, but never got a chance to beat) If you haven't done a video on this game already (Im commenting before checking your videos) "Star Tropics" would be fun; I loved that game...and it had some really unique mechanics ( the use of the instruction book stands out)
Great video. I always wanted to like this game but never could get far, and would get lost. Than didn't know what jelly bean did what. I was super happy when I heard about the one on the Wii and had a great time playing that one. Great video as always
Fond memories of this game. First one I picked out and bought with my own money from a years worth of chores - @age 6 (for $50!). Main reason... I loved the movie The Blob
Lol if I didnt take the time to make the joke on David Crane and his super cool haircut, I think we wouldve posted mullet boy at the EXACT same time... i was behind by 14 seconds, or pretty much the time it takes to type that stuff!
I only rented this game a couple of times, and I loved it. It was a bit difficult for me as a kid even with Nintendo Power. Maybe I'll try to find a copy.
So... I was going to look for mullet boy, but this was a game I played quite a bit when it came out, and I got distracted. I haven't played it since, but I still remember a lot of the jelly beans and the alliteration. I've also never beaten the game. I think thats about to change. Awesome video once again. There must be a lot of notification subscribers. I started the video 30 seconds after upload and I'm late to the game! Get it? :\
I always loved this game but I never did beat it. I have an idea for a lost gem of a nintendo game you might be interested in called "Princess Tomato and the Salad Kingdom" and would love to see a video on it from you sometime.
I have definitely heard of Princess Tomato. I need to try to find a copy. I think it would be a fun topic to cover one day for sure. Great to hear from you again man.
i was gonna say, feel like Boy and his Blob feels like an Atari 2600 adventure game which isnt a knock against it. Just different from wat people would initially expect out of an NES game gameplay and pacing wise. much respect for Crane
I'd really like to pick this up! Need to work on an NES collection. I try not to trust game rating sites too much because you could lose some potentially great games! Great video as always man!
Yeah man definitely try these games for yourself and not just trust the internet bandwagon. Lots of good NES games get a bad reputation just because AVGN, who is a fictional character btw lol, says so. But I enjoy AVGN videos too. I know James Rolfe is just hamming it up for the audience.
I used to see this game everywhere. It's a shame I always skipped it. If i knew then that the guy that made Pitfall made this, I would've picked it up. Awww, the many, many hours of playing Pitfall back then.... Another great video, Tyler. 👊
Dude I feel exactly the same way. I literally had the comment about if I knew it was the same guy who made Pitfall I would have played it in my script, but I took it out in the end. We are definitely on the same page Mauro.
What's funny even more, i was going through the Xbox Live store last night and i came across the remade version for the 360. I might pick that up eventually after MK11. I believe that was a sign..."Play it Mauro, play it" 😅
I recall messing around with the ketchup jellybeans, trying to force them to the blob. I don't know how I did it, and it only happened once, but I got him to eat one. He just disappeared, soft-locking the game. No matter how many ketchup jellybeans I threw after that had no effect. He was just gone forever, or until I restarted anyway.
My friend and I use to glitch the game with the hole punch jelly beans on blobolonia. If you time it right you can fall through the ground in one of the secret pits just a little and then be able to clip through the the ground all the way to the end and into the end credits. The end credits get all corrupted though though and you read some gibberish like "his tree cat got stuck on the job". This glitch use to scare the shit out of us.
I’m the one who pioneered the out of bounds glitches with the punch jellybean back in the 1990s. See davidwonn.kontek.net/nes.html for the original details or you can browse the old location by typing geocities.com/TimesSquare/Maze/7751/nes.html into the Wayback machine at archive.org .
The kid in the commercial for pitfall that you show is a 13 year old Jack Black. I didn't know he was in that commercial until I saw this video, and I am surprised I recognized him. But yeah, according to the Google machine, that's Jack Black.
If there is enough interest, I would consider doing a live playthrough of A Boy and His Blob on Twitch. Give this pinned comment a like and if it gets over 100 likes I will do it. Thanks!
Is this also your twitch tag? If so I'd like to drop a follow
Jason I'm just getting my Twitch account registered. I have normally livestreamed on RUclips and this would be my first time on Twitch. I will post my tag here once I get it all lined out.
Kinda rare, man. would be a good play-though. Besides, do what you want. If you feel like doing it, do it!
I forgot this game existed. I remember renting it a few times and getting stuck.

Glad this reminded you of some great memories with your dad. Glad you enjoyed it man.
Same here
As a kid, I found a speedrun type way to get to Blobolonia in a few minutes. But I’ve long since forgotten it.
This game was always better to talk about than to play
That's a fair statement lol. Thanks for commenting man.
Yes I agree
I agree as well.
Agreed fascinating concept for a game, but with questionable as far as game play and fun are considered
I have this game and beat it back in the day. It definitely would be a tough game to pick up as a kid. Especially in the days before the internet. Thanks for commenting man.
2:06 mullet boy! Oh wait that's just David crane... lol real mullet boy at 6:31, ketchup label
LOL!!!! You got me there for a second.

Great man thanks! Let me know if you get a chance to play again.

Automatic like when Michael “Willy wonka” Scott makes an appearance! Good stuff as always Tyler!
Dude I love the office and this skit immediately popped in my head when thinking of a video for this game lol.
GenerationGapGaming Absolutely, I have an unhealthy obsession with The Office and It’s Always Sunny.
This is my childhood. I just beat it for he first time a few months back and I love it. It was extremely tough for me as a kid but it is so nostalgic for me. Great video as always!
Awesome! We seem to have very similar taste in games Jluv! Always great to hear from you. Thanks.
Classic. I've still got my copy of A Boy and his Blob.

I’m working on some games I missed as a child, and several of your videos have inspired my list. I think this one is next;)
A true classic underrated NES game it looks amazing
Mullet boy 6:31! I craving some jelly beans after watching this video. Nice work as usual G3!
Thanks again Slappy. Go grab you a pack of Jelly Bellies lol.

This will always be a NES Classic !!! 😃
My sons (11 and 8) and I love your channel. We check everyday for new videos. Keep up the good work sir! This was a great video.
Thanks so much Peter! Tell your son's I said thanks for the support.

Thanks man! I was gonna use some of the music, but I decided not to lol.
I see mullet boy on the ketchup label at 6:31

7:39 Oh god! That brought back some unpleasant memories.
One of my (many) favorite NES games. I liked the setting of exploring caverns for treasure (Goonie-like).
This game was pretty good. I hope Crane made some decent money for all of his effort.
I loved this game…after many many many many hours I’ve still never finished this game. I think I’ll try again tomorrow!
This was a very underrated game bro,,good video,, ps i hate ketchup as well
Thanks Bruce. You are my fellow ketchup hating brother!👊😆
Blasphemy....down with the ketchup haters....lol
Thanks for covering the games of my childhood. I loved your Punchout and Goonies 2 vids especially. Keep 'em coming.
You're welcome Aaron! Appreciate the encouragement man.

One of my favorite games. Just bought it again recently!
Got this game for Christmas one year. Had a blast with it.
Two games I always saw in magazines but never got to play..and still to this day..still true lol
This and Maniac Mansion
Great video. I always wanted to like this game but never could get far, and would get lost. Than didn't know what jelly bean did what. I was super happy when I heard about the one on the Wii and had a great time playing that one.
Great video as always
Thanks Russ! I need to play through the Wii version myself.
I never figured out what to do in this game,
but now I have youtube, and understand a little more.
Great video. Never played this game but plan on playing it.

Another great video, Tyler! This was a favorite rental of mine growing up, it was hard to find in stores for some reason here in Michigan.
I didn't see it that much on the shelves back in the day in WV either. Glad you enjoyed it man.
Fond memories of this game. First one I picked out and bought with my own money from a years worth of chores - @age 6 (for $50!). Main reason... I loved the movie The Blob
I loved this game. But I also sucked at it. Thanks for the tips!
You are most welcome. This game definitely has a learing curve lol.
Awesome video!!! You really do a good job finding history and presenting everything. Thanks for the video.
Thanks so much. Glad you appreciate the detail. I try to make it as enjoyable as possible.
Great video man. I'm off this Saturday and I will go play this game. Thumbs up.
Thanks so much as always Mark. Let me know if you beat the game!
@@GenerationGapGaming indeed, I will see if I still have game. Lol
Marshmallows and Chocolate, eh? If he added Graham Crackers it would be a SMOREgasborg 😊
6:31 mullet boy on the ketchup label!
Lol if I didnt take the time to make the joke on David Crane and his super cool haircut, I think we wouldve posted mullet boy at the EXACT same time... i was behind by 14 seconds, or pretty much the time it takes to type that stuff!
Finally somebody talking about this game, one of my favorite games as a kid.
Awesome! Glad you loved this game for sure.
Another great vid ! Please keep making these !!!!!
I remember renting this from the local video store when I was a kid. I really liked it but I also remember getting stuck and never made it very far.
Good review. Makes me want to buy a old nes & relive my weekends playing all might long
Yeah buddy Jeff! I'd like to play the NES all weekend long too. Glad you enjoyed the video.
I always loved the idea of this game. I rented it a lot but I often got stuck and gave up
Those were the gaming days and games of my childhood =)
I never realized D.Crane did ABAHB. Amazing story thanks.

I had this game when I was a kid, I loved it.
dude i need to play this, i just got it at MGC. Great video brother
I saw that it your pickups video. It's fun. Quirky.....but fun.
One of the most creative, interesting games on NES if you ask me.
I only rented this game a couple of times, and I loved it. It was a bit difficult for me as a kid even with Nintendo Power. Maybe I'll try to find a copy.
@GenerationGapGaming you should add a subtitle that a young Jack Black visible at 2:31 in your video

oh no problem! I remember renting the game one weekend and had a lot of fun with it. Same with Shadowgate and The Uninvited!
Awesome retro breakdowns man! Keep it up. You have to throw some Castlevania 12&3, Double Dribble, Paperboy, & Techmo Wrestling in there.
Did anyone else notice Jack Black in the Atari Commercial, I have skills
that was Jack Black in that pitfall commercial
I remember jumping up into space on the first screen with the trampoline.

Oh wow Michael that's crazy! I would not have been happy lol.
Another great upload by generation gap gaming!
Thanks so much! Really appreciate the positive feedback. Gives me motivation to make better videos for you.
One of my favorite games as a kid
My friend and I use to glitch the game with the hole punch jelly beans on blobolonia. If you time it right you can fall through the ground in one of the secret pits just a little and then be able to clip through the the ground all the way to the end and into the end credits. The end credits get all corrupted though though and you read some gibberish like "his tree cat got stuck on the job". This glitch use to scare the shit out of us.
Yeah Michael I have seen people do that glitch on speedruns. It's so cool. It's hilarious to just watch him walk through the credits lol.
