HAHA God I love being dragged back to the 80's by your videos. My mom put this game in my Easter basket one year. She said she bought it because "the box looked so cute!". 9 year old me internally groaned because even then I knew that the box art was a TERRIBLE way to judge games. But I gave it a chance and it was great! I spent the whole day eating nothing but two dozen colored eggs and a chocolate rabbit while playing this game on the family room TV.
Yep but we sure didn't have RUclips or the internet to get an idea of whether a game was good or not. All we had was word of mouth, game magazines, or just roll the dice and buy a game based on the cover art or the description and pictures on the back of the box.
@@crimsontide1980 For sure. I always went by the actual game play pictures on the back of the box. I remember thinking how awful the Megaman box art was compared to the game. But my mom had an oddly good instinct for finding great games somehow. She bought me "Magic of Scheherazade" and I was like *GROAN* And it turned out to be one of the greatest games EVER!
"I spent the whole day eating nothing but two dozen colored eggs and a chocolate rabbit..."
No jellybeans? 😉
The stench must have been awful.
what a great memory!
Is anyone else here just feeding off of everyone else's nostalgia, like some kind of nostalgia vampire? Love it.
I❤ this game as a child
I remember this game being impossible as a kid. Thanks for all you do.
This was one of my family's first NES games, and we spent weeks taking notes and practicing avoiding all the death traps. It was wild, looking back, at just how much trial and error is involved if you go in without a map. You put the hole in the wrong place in the subway and you just die until you figure out where the right place is.
We mostly used to have fun playing around and experimenting with tricks like how the boy can temporarily run in mid-air if you skid to a stop over a ledge.
My brothers and I are having a similar experience now with phasmophpbia. Incredibly fun exploration of the game systems.
The thing is, that level of open ended ness felt like wxillerating freedom. Not bad design.
There is a balance, but games have gone too far in the opposite direction. Games don’t feel exciting anymore because they don’t feel “alive”.
That's how a lot of 1980's games were! They rewarded note and map taking skills.
When I was getting a little older as a pre teen, and longing to get out of the house more, this game gave me some hope about the depth and adventure in the game world.
The soundtrack in this game will forever haunt me in a weird, but good way. Loved the concept of this jelly bean eating, shape shifting blob!
i had this game and loooved it. it was so different than anything else out on NES at that time. seriously brings me back fond memories.
I'm taken back to being a child every weekend thanks to your videos. Thank you!
Great avatar!
When I was a kid I thought the cave and treasure collecting was the entire game. Needless to say I couldn't even do that.
I did stumble upon Blob land area but could never get past the cherry bombs.
I thought the peppermint treats were just decorative accents in a bland background.
Haha.
Same!
I remember watching my older brother play this as a kid, and I loved this! It’s like watching him play all over again. 🙃🥰🎄☃️🎁
It's weird.. I'm never going to use these strategies, or play these games ever again. But I watch every week, from start to finish. Whether I played the game or not.
Quality content here, tl;dr.
For the most part, same. I just enjoy his presentation, the history of the game and then seeing the art and story unfold during the playthough.
Yeah it's weird to say, these videos are so good that you don't need to even play the game anymore, because watching them gives you the full experience. And I love that.
I wasn't aware the coconut thing was unintentional. I always thought it was the intended solution to the cherry bombs -- roll the coconut into the screen to set them off early before the boy gets in kill range.
I adored this game when I was younger. Took me ages to complete it. It was the first game I had where I realised I might have to write some things down to remember them!
Oh man! This game was SO hard when I was 10! So psyched you did this one!!!!
Update: it’s still hard now.
I loved this game as a kid and never managed to complete it until years later but always just fun with the blob when playing as kid. Thanks for deep-diving these classic NES games. Always something to learn no matter how much you think you know about these classics.
This is easily one of the most unique games of all time.
The Game Boy and Wii A Boy and His Blob games are worth playing as well.
There’s more to that limerick that you showed at 40:25. There’s apparently a way to display the next two lines using glitches, but the last line is buried in the ROM. The full limerick is, “A boy hero heard a kid sob. (Her tree cat got stuck on the job.) A ladder he tried. ‘Oh, thank you!’ she cried. Replied he, ‘Just doing my blob.’
that’s awesome, thank you for posting it!
Despite the challenge and sometimes intense puzzles, this is a game I was able to intuitively figure out an finish as a child without Nintendo Power or the Nintendo Hotline. I was truly proud !
One of my favorite memories of this game was the New Year’s Eve after I got this and Little Nemo for Christmas and a friend of mine showed me how to beat the game in a couple of minutes.
It was cool to see the ending and all but, honestly…I just preferred spending hours exploring the underground.
I love the re-imagining of this game. Stuff like bubble is so much fun to run around in.
I borrowed this game from my aunt Millie. It was a fun game and had great memories .also used to play Family Feud. She is passed now. Thank you brother for bringing up the great memories I had with my aunt and this game.
This is one my favorite NES games. I've never beaten it, but I still love it.
This is such a well designed game. David Crane really is a master.
This is one of my favorite channels! Thanks for all of your work making these videos!
The historic overview at the top of each of these episodes is great. I think I've learned a little something new in each episode, but the bit about Imagineering going on to make Bart vs. the Space Mutants kinda blew my mind, lol. The drifty controls, the weird hitboxes, the trial and error puzzles, it all makes sense now! The young me raged at both games so hard - this OST seriously still triggers me! - and the current (old) me is somehow satisfied to know about this connection. XD Thanks for another video, and for all the memories - so many in the comments section each vid!
I'm glad I subscribed, cause every Saturday I get to relive some of my best memories growing up.
You clearly live the NES for it's nostalgia when you were a kid, and if bet you're approximately 40 or so years old, like me.
This was a significant part of how we spent our time as kids, and the memories it helped make, will last with us forever.
The different worlds we were immersed in, and the satisfaction of conquering something, will always be memories at the forefront of our minds.
Thanks for being a part of our collective history.
Kindred spirit.
After so many years I've always wondered what the coconut jelly bean did. I was convinced it had a very secret use. Thanks for clearing up that mystery!
I remember seeing this back in the late 80's, just the cartridge, not even the game, and thinking how ridiculous it had to be.
Now, after 30 some odd years, and finally seeing the playthrough, this game looks like fun. And the blob is just cute!
Apparently that weird message is a limerick with the last line missing. That last line is actually buried in the game's code, and it goes "replied he, 'just doing my blob.' "
I loved playing this game, but I never had the manual so it was a brutal trial and error. I could never beat all the sections on Blobolonia. I love how you tackle both the best known games and lots of smaller titles too.
An actual NES game I completed as a kid and it was epic to finally finish this damn game! All about trial and error on where to drop those holes in the floor! Lol
I remember being fascinated by this game as a little kid. Couldn't progress at all and even though I only rented it the one time, it stuck in my brain for 30 years. Great video!
Man this is bringing me back , I didn't get to far in this as a kid but loved playing it and loved the blob as a character. I thought it was so cool with him Turning into different things.
Dude... I've been waiting for this game ever since you started doing this series... THANK YOU!
watching these are like watching Saturday morning cartoons as a kid!!
I want a blob and bags of jelly beans for Christmas. Just think of all the fun you could have seeing what happens with different flavours and finding lots of places to use your blob.
Great video. Another note worthy movie from the 80s "Flight of the Navigator"
I loved this game when it came out! It was hard as hell but it was fun to explore and figure things out.
Another epic vid. I absolutely love these. Now maybe I'll be able to beat the game myself. Never did when I was a kid. I'm living vicariously through you, doing these vids! 😅
This was my favorite! It's all I played for like 6 months after I got it that Christmas. I was able to beat it twice. The music is in this game has been stuck in my mind for the past 34 years lol
You keep playing em, I'll keep watching em.
They should make an officially licensed "A Boy And His Blob" jellybean assortment with every flavor from the games.
Read about this in a Nintendo Power magazine I had as a kid but Blockbuster never carried it. Wanted to play it so bad! Glad I could do it vicariously.
Blob reminds me of the old school movie, The Blob. U You Can’t Beat Video Games , Merry Christmas 🎁! Thank you for all of your video and guidance for each Nes!
Lol imagine if you dont feed the blob it invades your ho us e and kills you and your family
Yes! I remember asking you about doing this game months ago!
I had a lot of fun breaking this game and exposing the hidden Easter Eggs back in the 90s. Initially I exploited the Punch jellybean in the underground earth areas to wrap around from the rightmost screens to the leftmost to beat the game easily in under 20 minutes. Others would later evolve these tactics into the even shorter route we know today.
First game I ever owned. Got it for Christmas to play on my brother's NES. I needed a lot of help but not a bad way to start gaming.
This game feels like a cross between “Back to the Future” and “Indiana Jones.”
I’m happy for some bubblegum nostalgia, but these in depth reviews remind me of how I looked at these day during their day.
I really love this channel, I've played most of the games but never finish them all so i appreciate this channel a lot, thanks for the effort of making all this and extra kudos for the intros
This is such a unique game. Loved it as a kid.
But kids today would never play this, no directions, so too difficult 😂
Too obtuse now and too obtuse back then lol. Only difference is we were just happy to have things called videogames and the NES was where it was at. Trial and error artificially extended what would be VERY short game experiences as well. I remember renting this game and Simon's Quest all the time, and I don't recall making much progress in either, nor do I recall getting terribly frustrated. Not sure I had any goal other than to just play and enjoy. A few games I owned as a kid I, of course, wanted to beat them so I had a goal of completion. Own one or two games a year and you eventually became an expert at them.
That game opening... Nice Raiders of the Lost Ark tribute.
I love the history section, it is truly a video within a video and a quick way to get some valuable content.
When I was a kid I had no clue what the heck I was doing or where I was supposed to go, but I still thought this game was cool and fun 😊
You remind me of me...back in the day...you beat games I couldn't
I played this game a lot as a kid but never figured out how to beat it. I thought the idea of using jelly beans to turn a blob into useful items was intriguing. Whenever I eat jelly beans I just turn into a blob. Very strange.
I’ll probably go back to beat it on emulator. This game was tough as a kid. Thanks
From the strange room, the whole limerick is:
A boy hero heard a kid sob.
(her tree cat got stuck on the job.)
A ladder he tried.
'Oh thank you!' she cried.
"Replied he, 'Just doing my blob'".
Which can be accessed in the game code directly, the glitch only shows part of it.
I think the developers were going to have a tutorial section with accompanying poems to teach the players about the moves, but it was scrapped before production. The whole game feels unfinished and weird because of how rushed it was.
OMG I KNEW I WASNT CRAZY YESTERDAY WHEN COMMENTED ABOUT A GAMEBOY GAME VERSION! :D
But my god, I can't belive I never finished this! I was a lot closer to the end than I thought. And the music. My lord I still love the music. Especially that almost Indiana Jones style start to the title music. Such a bop that whole song IMO. TY for finally bringing me some closure I didn't realise I needed by playing this thru mate. :)
Oh man this game is super weird and I could never figure it out.
I love puzzle games.
I fell in love with Lolo back when I was a kid, then I loved Krusty's super Fun House as a teen.
But I never got the pleasure to play this.
It seems a little slow, but the puzzle aspect I could see, would keep me busy figuring it out for hours, and thinking critically.
Thanks for sharing this with us.
I look forward to more puzzle games in the future.
lol i literally just beat this game last night. Damn it, now I know how! Oh well, I like UCBVG's style so much I'm gonna watch the whole thing anyway!
Loved this game as a kid. I somehow did the end of game glitch without knowing how or what happened. Good to get closure finally after 30 years lol...
I discovered a similar " straight to the end " glitch in a NES game called Soltice. Never could reproduce it but I know it's there since I did it.
Keep up the great work!
I remember beating this game after over 100 attempts through trial error! Enjoyed every min of it! Never used the honey jellybean tho. Nostalgia
david crane did an excellent job on these games
Oh my gosh this game was far and away my favourite
I really loved this game. I think it was the first time I ever really consulted books and guides over a video game, outside of Nintendo Power. Great memories.
looking back through all the comments... we are positive as heckin heck! what a wonderful community with this wonderful channel
this game and lion king are the 2 games i owned that I got bad copies of that would crash at the same place every time I still really liked playing them up to that point.
This game was always a struggle for me. I beleive my buddy got it from his nintendo power subsciption. Well thanks to your video I understand this game in ways I never would have before! Lots of great memories, now I want to give it another shot!
Ace! Thanks for choosing to cover this crazy great game
My cousin had this game when I was a kid. It always fascinated me but I had no clue how to play it, lol. Love your channel dude, it reminds me so much of those old 'NES Tips and Tricks' VHS tapes.
I wonder how many people got this game, learned the Big Bad was making people eat just Candy and Junk Food, and found themself wanting to join the Dark Side instead of help Blob defeat it...? :P
Great and Unique NES game and interesting game play, I back to the past whit this videos.
This is STILL a great game and it was so unique.
Another classic game with oddball gameplay elements that made it a hit. Seeing it get a modern console release is nice. If only Gargoyles Quest got the same treatment among other titles that deserve the attention.
Oh man the gameboy version of that was the reason I made it through a 5hr drive to New Jersey from vermont as a kid
Ahh the game that kicked off my 3-decade love affair with jelly beans 😋
Gross
When you made the Michelin Man comment I wish I could have given you a thumbs up. But I had already given you one.
Loved this video, one of the first games I ever played as a 4 year old with my Aunt Rita. Thank you!
Thank you! This is probably the best guide I have ever seen for this game. Rock on,
I was 2 when this game came out but I remember my older bros playing it. It was certainly before my gaming days although i do remember lightly playing it. Im pretty sure i havent beaten a single NES game. This channel is fun to watch though.
Underneath the cartridge at the beginning is a game I could never beat. Solomons key.
I saw a movie call A boy and his Dog (1974 movie), and thought the game got its idea from it. I was wrong. Crazy movie tho, give it a watch.
I played the balls off this game as a kid, and had a ton of fun experimenting, but could never beat it. I haven’t even skipped the ads at the start of the video yet, I just had to jump in the comments to express my excitement about this video!
Adventures tom sawyer? Who framed roger rabbit? Dizzy??? U and doggo amazing man thanks all you do...just throwin stuff out, you make everyones weekend
I was thinking of suggesting this game recently, nice!
The new ABAHB, and cup head for example, look so cool, it's such a cool branch off of most games looking like 120hz 4k call of duty craziness
If a modern A Boy and His Blob game was done in 3D, the Grape Jelly Bean should be reintroduced and not only would it make enemies go splat against Blobert and die, but that the Wall could also be used to hold back things like rock slides, mud slides, land slides, flooding water, lava flows, and avalanches as well. I would also add a Red Licorice Jelly Bean that can be used like a Whip, Grappling Gun, or Ropes in most LEGO video games.
I always knew David Crane made this game but it never struck me just how much A Boy And His Blob is like Pitfall and Pitfall 2 until this video.
love the doggo. cute fellow!
I remember a different game from when I was kid. You didn't start with any beans, there was only one rocket and it was just to left a screen or two from where you start them game. Granted that's been 30 some odd years but it stayed with me. I remember having to find jelly beans and test what they do, and when I did and would restart the game I'd have to let my much younger sister play since she always had to do whatever I was doing.
This is the biggest game of the NES i always tried several times to figure out and just...couldnt. The limited beans kinda got in the way of figuring things out since i couldnt remember what they did and kept wasting them.
Also still eagerly awaiting you to do Shatterhand :D
I had this game growing up.
i didn't know how to play it so i was just messing around and getting killed in funny ways.
was a fun time.
Thanks man. Never had this game but love watching your vids!
Uses for the Wall: Choke-slamming Hogan from the top of the Sheridan Hotel
Another great NES game. A little too weird to catch on and be a best seller. A lot of Genesis games were like that and didn't get their due.
You are really skilled at videogames! Oh and that human is cool too I guess...
Awesome! I requested this game a little while ago!
I got stuck on the cherry bombs for a long time when I was a kid. I finally found a magazine somewhere that told me about the coconut bean trick. Then I was finally able to beat this game.
that music is very nostalgic for me
