    Episode 102
Willow is a surprisingly good Action RPG for the NES! it looks a lot like the Legend of Zelda, and it features that same great sword swinging action. Beyond that, this game has a significantly different feel to it - Instead of solving puzzles, its more about navigating mazes, and fighting monsters to level up.
The game is very loosely based on the 1989 Willow movie directed by Ron Howard with a story by George Lucas. You might think that Lucas Arts would make this game, but it was actually developed by a top team at Capcom!
So how did this game get made? In today's episode we'll find out, and then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
Where to find EVERY SWORD and SHIELD!
The SECRET SHORTCUT that lets you skip a huge chunk of the game!
EASY ways to LEVEL UP FAST!
Where to find EVERY MAGIC SPELL!
How to unlock the DEBUG MODE, and how to use it to beat the game in less than 5 minutes!
A secret GLITCH to MAX YOUR LEVEL in minutes!
EASY ways to defeat EVERY BOSS, even BAVMORDA herself... AND MORE!
    Thanks for watching!

I played this game a lot with a buddy of mine who had it, back when we were in our early teens. It was in the mid 90s, but he happened to have the game, we both loved playing old NES games, he lived across the street and a shared love of the film was one of the things we bonded over.

I remember owning this game as a kid on our NES, when I was about 6 or 7. I couldn't get past the first two snake monsters in the forest, and I thought one of them was supposed to be Bogarda himself, lol. Of course, as a kid, I gave up and moved onto other games, but something always called to me that I wish I had stuck with this title and finished it. Never looked up walkthroughs or anything because I held out hope I'd play it again someday and beat it on my own. But when I saw it pop up here, I couldn't resist watching, as I knew I'd get in depth information on all the characters, storyline, and even production on the title. To this day, I have never seen the movie, but with the announcement of the new Willow series coming out, I feel like it's a call to truly dive into the lore of this franchise, and I look forward to it. Thanks for the video, and here's holding out hope for a re-release from Nintendo to accompany the series!

This is one of my favorite NES games, and was one of the first ones I repurchased after selling most of my video game collection off in the late 2000s early 2010s. It's not a perfect game, but it is so fun and engrossing, and of course being made by Capcom, it has a phenomenal soundtrack and overall excellent presentation for an NES game.

I saw the film and played the game as a pre-teen. I think the movie was the thing that made me fall in love and adopt the halflings as my favorite demi-human race in fantasy fiction. The fact that even a tiny smallfolk can be an epic hero was impressive. (The movie showed Willow beating Bavmorda in a way that didn't involve combat, which made it even more impressive. ^_^)

I love this one so much that I ripped the sprites for Spriters' Resource. This is a great Action-Adventure title that has what is, for my money, quite possibly the greatest adventuring tune ever written; it starts out with a heroic feel to it, and slowly fades into a wistful notion of absorbing all the sights and sounds that pass you by on your quest. Funny story, too; I didn't see the movie until about 2004 or so, but had been playing this since it was brand new. The whole reason I watched the movie is that my significant other was a huge fan, and we'd had this long conversation about Willow, where neither knew what the other was talking about, since I hadn't realized how different the game was. Turns out I didn't care for the movie, but still love the game, so I'd definitely recommend it to anyone into top-down Action-Adventure titles.

One small correction about that ending segment about Capcom developing the Minish Cap, they actually worked on more than just the Minish Cap. They also made both Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages and from what I understand it was Capcom who approached Nintendo on developing these games since a lot of staff at Capcom where big fans of the Zelda series. In fact their idea was to make three Oracle games (each one representing one of the pieces of the Triforce) with the ability to transfer data between each entry to create a full story, unfortunately the third game had to be scraped due to the difficulty of developing three full games with data transfer between them.

The Willow arcade game is also great fun to play today as it had a shop system and hidden secrets that's much more fun to play with unlimited credits.

Willow is my mom's favorite movie. Grew up watching Willow periodically and it is a movie I very much enjoy. I doubt my mom knows about the Disney+ continuation of Willow. I have yet to watch it.
Anyways, thanks for showing this game! It sure does look fun!

I remember this game fondly. Was one of the best games on NES and the soundtrack was excellent. I played the arcade version of Willow quite a bit as well, but the difficulty level was quite high.

One of my all time favorite NES games. The graphics are beautiful, the music is fantastic, and the gameplay was fun. It could be a bit challenging at times, but it wasn't the most cryptic. Honestly I just need to complain about the password system.

Yo this channel is so awesome. Thank you for being such a positive influence on the gaming community and showing how to beat difficult games in a way that doesn't bring depression and hopelessness as tends to happen in the modern era.

Nice! I feel like I missed this game completely as a kid (I actually read the novelization of the film before learning there WAS a film, then found out as an adult that there was a video game), and every time I saw some speedrun or other video on it, I would think it looked fun, but a bit too complicated for me to jump into. Maybe this video is just what I'd need!

Willow was the first VHS tapes I ever owned as a child, Christmas 88.
The next Christmas 89, I got the NES game, which turned out to be one of my favorite NES games.
I still have the VHS somewhere in storage, but sadly, no longer have the NES cart.

I bet I can find my VHS copy of Willow if I did some digging at my parents house - I was trying to explain to my nephews about how movies would take FOREVER to come out on video back in the day. Not like now where they're on streaming the same day that they release in the theater 🤣
