  • Aaron reviews the obscure puzzler A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia for the Nintendo Entertainment System this week on Friday Night Arcade.
    A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia is a 1989 video game developed by Imagineering for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The video game was published by Absolute Entertainment in North America and Europe and by Jaleco in Japan. A Boy and His Blob follows an unnamed, male protagonist and his shapeshifting blob friend on their adventure to save the planet of Blobolonia from the clutches of an evil emperor.
    A Boy and His Blob is a platform-puzzle game that puts the player in control of the boy; its gameplay revolves around feeding his blob companion different flavored jelly beans to change its shape into various tools in order to overcome obstacles and traverse the game's world. A Boy and His Blob was designed and programmed by David Crane. Licensed by Nintendo in the summer of 1989, development began and was completed in an intense six-week period. Crane has described the game's overall concept of a boy accompanied by a morphing blob as unconventional and wanted to try his own hand at implementing useful tools for the player.

    I played this a lot as a kid till I got to figure out the puzzles. Eventually, it became a test of skill to not fall down or get hit by instakill enemies. But this was one of the first puzzle games I beat as a kid, and ai felt so proud ! I didn't really understand the story, but I got to go to the subway, caverns, have a little pet, and go to space, so yeah !

      Friday Night Arcade I clicked this video in response to a You Tube ad. I appreciate the varied footage, in-game footage, and historical facts. The gimicky shows garner attention, but I figure shows like this better represent the likely future of gaming history shows, and better respects the source material.

    I had this growing up. I remember buying it at Toys R Us in the bargain bin. I didn't 'get it' at all. I do remember using the umbrella to get past the shower of Cocoa Puffs. I remember thinking the controls sucked and that the game felt unfinished. Now that I know that this was from the same dude that did Pitfall, it makes sense. The control is a lot like that.

    If Bloblonia ever entered a military alliance with The Easter Bunny, the sheer size of their jellybean supply would make such an alliance unbeatable.

    All the faults you listed were no big deal for me. I loved figuring this game out and it didn't feel annoying to start all over again. The game was full of secrets to uncover, so it kept me entertained for months while I had no new video games to play at the time.
    **some notes:**
    The boy doesn't stop on a dime, but that allows you to clear some small gaps with cartoon logic. He can run in mid-air for a little bit before falling. If you skid off a cliff and don't run back to the edge the boy will look down and then wave goodbye before falling to his doom.
    The ketchup hint in the book refers to a very odd and obscure easter egg. If you manage to trick the blob into eating a ketchup jellybean he turns into a little brick wall. Originally the wall was tied to grape jellybeans, which were cut from the final game. Its purpose was probably to protect you from explosions, but that functionality isn't in the game anymore.
    The game can be finished really fast using the skidding trick I mentioned but also a massive programming oversight where tossing a jellybean to the left side of the screen in Blobonia reveals the boss screen for a split second, which in turn gets rid of all the enemies (the game thinks you're on the final screen, so it doesn't load them.) Then you can breeze through to the end.
    There are also some odd hidden screens in the game that you can find by dropping the punch jellybean on specific areas of Blobonia. You can see stuff like 3/4ths of a limerick. TCRF has the full limerick displayed.

    Had this on the nes when I was a kid but I never really understood it, I don’t think I was aware the object of the game was to find treasure and vitamins. Sometimes I would just go to the blobs home planet right away but I didn’t figure out the gun thing and would die because of the exploding cherry bombs. I tried it again loads of times over the years but never got the point.

    I played this so much as a kid. Never made it very far though. It was fun but hard and also you had to figure everything out as you went. this is definitely a flawed classic, but thats sometimes the charm in older games cuz nowadays everything is so precisely scewed for all players liking and convenience they tend to be same game with a different paint job. And when i got it at 4 years old i had no idea how to do anything nor even understood what to do with jelly beans until this teenager on my street baby sat me one night and for some reason knew the game quite well

      Couldn't agree more... everything now is tailored to fit everybody, complete with a tutorial and they basically just hold your hand through most of the way. To this day, nobody has done a speedrun / TAS of A Boy And His Blob (NES) where they deliberately collect every peppermint. Or even have them as any kind of focus. All that really exists, after all this time, are a zillion speedruns where they abuse the broken code, and a handful of legit runs where they collect all of the treasures and play the game legitimately. Nobody tries to collect *everything.*

    Star Wars, Empire, Star Voyager, Blaster Master, Super Dodgeball, and finally Boy and His Blob are the only games I wish would’ve come on my mini NES! Of regrets in all my life biggest was trading in my NES collection for a SNES. I later traded that for a PlayStation to go to college with.
    I own almost my full collection back but those few. Because I’d have to get a full NES again. And once got both Mini’s I ended up getting the one retro counsel always wanted last year. A GameCube. Because I wanted all the Star Wars games, finish Metroid, and try Smash Brothers Melee at last. Worth it!

      Friday Night Arcade I’d seen someone post on gram they’d added games to their mini NES. I am almost tempted, but don’t want to mess up the open one I have and one still new in the box. I spent this week tracking down games my brother had on our Apple 2. I couldn’t believe I could remember all of them.
      Also your video on Wing Commander was great! One of the most underrated games in all of the SNES era. Did you ever play the other game they made for SNES? It wasn’t a sequel, was hidden missions or something to that effect. I rented that all the time cause could never find a copy anywhere as a teenager.

      That's funny -- I can't remember what happened yesterday but can remember games or specific things from games 30 years ago. I guess that stuff just gets implanted in your memories when you're a kid like that.
      I did play it -- Wing Commander: The Secret Missions. It was awesome, just a continuation of the first one, pretty much exactly the same as far as gameplay. I used to rent both of them often. Tracked it down a year or two ago cheap at a mom and pop games shop down south when we were traveling.

      +anthony orsini Thanks for sharing that, Anthony. I'll have to take a closer look at some of the other games in the series at some point. I definitely never could figure this one out as a kid... not until 20-some years later when I revisited it for the purposes of this review lol.

    those controls... if you ran off a ledge at the right speed and tried to stop at the right time, the boy would float,look down then fall. like some bugs bunny stuff. remember that?

    As flawed as this game might be, I still consider it one of Imagineering Inc's better games on the NES, along with Space Shuttle Project and Ghoul School. They also developed Ghostbusters II, The Simpsons games, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, and Swamp Thing though, so there definitely seems to be a lot of trial and error going on.

    • @eblizzard2842

      I wanted to enjoy Ghoul School with every fiber of my being, but even after hand mapping and hours of gameplay I could never make any sense of the layout of the game.

    • @FridayNightArcade
      @FridayNightArcade  8 лет назад +3

      +Abraham 123 That's understandable... Others have said the Wii game is pretty darn good as well compared to this. The NES version only had a 6-week development cycle and probably could have used some more time for polish. I never played it on Wii but want to give it a try sometime soon. Thanks for watching.

    A super fun game, I really enjoyed the exploration and puzzle solving. The ending, I have to agree is a little lackluster. I rented the remake via gamefly but was a little disappointed by the lack of exploration. Too bad, really. It was a pretty looking game.

    i did play this game as a kid. don't make the mistake of feeding Blob a cola jelly bean while he's imprisoned. I thought he'd balloon out and break the cage, but it doesn't end well for him... :(

    • @FridayNightArcade
      @FridayNightArcade  8 лет назад

      +Douglas Estep Ha! Good to know! Supposedly there is a way you can trick Blob into eating a ketchup jellybean too by getting him to eat a different bean and then quickly switch and throw a ketchup bean while his mouth is still open. I didn't try it but apparently something bad happens lol. Thanks for watching.
