Nah, buddy. You're not being too harsh. There's nothing quite as frustrating as a game that had the potential to be a blast and ended up being terrible.
"Look, Magician, I'm not angry. I'm just disappointed."
This made me literally bust up laughing over here.
This was the first RPG I played, I was about ten / eleven years old. Together with my brother we were obsessed. We kept it wrapped in bubble wrap, inside two boxes and inside a drawer. We didn't even know English so we tortured our parents to translate everything. At that time there was absolutely no information about this game on the primitive internet back then, so we had to discover everything alone. It takes years to complete it. If I had known Planescape Torment at that time I think I would have dropped out of school
and I would probably lost my mind.
1:15 Hypoglycemia: The Video Game
I had this game as a kid. I thought the concept, design and music was so cool but I never got very far 😄 now I don't feel so bad 😁
27 years later?? Thats a long time to finally get to play this masterpiece. Haha
I love how the developers were like:
Wow, we just worked so hard to make this great game and we can't wait for you to have a good time playing it.
This game sounds frustrating as hell.
I played thru the game many years ago and found it quite fun actually. Sure its not to everyones liking but I found it to be a fun challenge and it had some secrets to be found. Some spells had caveats to learn and their were a few little mini quests hidden in the game that gave you experience. Also while you can power up spells to level 4 to do more damage the character does get stronger stats over time such as increased mana which lets you cast more big spells which is a necessity for the end game boss. Also most enemies are not immune to spells what he is talking about is resistences. I can keep hitting enemies with fire spells and watch it bounce off but it only bouncea off until i break their fire shield.
Another great video. Really enjoy your reviews and gameplay videos. Never heard of this game despite being a huge nintendo player as a kid in the 80s. Now I want to give this game a go, even if I have to emulate it. You should do a review of the old (S)NES Ultima games.
You deserve many more subs. Here's to hoping you get a bigger fan base
Thank you for the kind words.
Friday Night Arcade - No need for thanks. Just telling like it is and being honest. There are so many gaming channels these days, but 99% are terrible. Most are young kids who weren't even a sperm in their dad's sack when games like this came out. It's refreshing to see someone older who remembers the classics and has true nostalgia. Plus, you don't need to rely on profanity and/or yelling dirty jokes to be funny. Enjoy your sense of humor and commentary.
Not trying to kiss ass, I just wanted to tell you that your content is very entertaining. Look forward to seeing your channel grow.
That's kind of you to say. I'll admit my first few videos three years ago were pretty "AVGN inspired" as I was still getting used to this (the Jurassic Park SNES video was a love letter to AVGN that I never thought anyone would actually watch), but I've tried to move forward and find my own voice. Also tried to get away from profanity and keep it mostly straight laced.
I'd love for the channel to grow but honestly, I never thought it would even get this far so I'm incredibly thankful for that. If the channel died tomorrow, I'd be content with where it landed.
Friday Night Arcade - Well I've been watching since before even 1k subs I believe. Found a recommended video of yours come up (trying to remember what it was) and enjoyed the commentary and jokes. I notice th AVGN influence, as many reviewers of classic games were inspired by him, but the way you explain is more complete and you don't lower yourself to simple poop jokes. Your voice is calming as well. As I said before, it's really refreshing to see a more "adult" perspective. I used to watch Pat the NES Punk, but his character was just way too childish and tried too hard. Your style is more natural.
Anyways, congrats on your expansion to this point. Many don't even get to 1k subs after years. I've met so many wannabes, mostly kids, trying to become RUclipsrs because they think it's easy. It's hard unless you have a good voice and can write a decent script or make good jokes on the fly. Keep doing what you're doing. It's working thus far.
Only heard of this game for the music. The music alone is pretty good, and I imagine it reminds people of C64 music, especially Tim Follin.
Very cool, not sure how I never heard of this. Seems like with some better thought out design this could have been pretty remarkable.
I had this game as a kid. I never made it anywhere because I had no idea what I was doing and usually ended up killing myself with unknown spells.
played the hell out of this game when i was a child, now i dont get why i did it since i never made it past the second section, but i did always would come back because the game was charming for me back in the day, now it's a chore to play, still, great game
I rented this when I was a kid. And I disliked it for all the reasons you mention. I loved the music and art, both of which heavily inspired my Dungeons and Dragons homebrew game. After walking away from the game in frustration, I discovered to my delight the awesome demo reel the game goes through for several minutes. It was the beautiful demo reel that I loved the most and I wanted the game to feel as cool as that, but...it just wasn't and never could be.
Check back on Tuesday when I'll be unearthing a truly hidden gem for the Sega Genesis / Mega Drive. Thank you for watching and have a great weekend!
Friday Night Arcade Nice tease my friend.
Nope, you're not being too harsh. In fact, you were being nice. This game sucked doggy-doop. Rented it once and took it back an hour later. Then got it as a gift. Took it back to the store unopened and exchanged it for Faxanadu. Best exchange ever! Yes yes..
I'll try my best at helping out on this one with codes under nesten if interested?
@@thecaptain2281 Faxanadu kicks ass
Won’t be playing that game. But the title screen music is one of my favorite NES songs.
This game was super hard as a kid
You needed sunglasses I the wilderness...in the town before you leave...and need fleet foot and Featherlite to get the chest after killing snake
You seem to enjoy adventure games with slight RPG and/or platforming elements. I've had a game in my NES library for a while now called Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of the Lance. Its based off of the Dragonlance series of D&D books and games. I never made it really far, but it has multiple character with various strengths and weaknesses. Like a less arcade version of Legacy of the Wizard (which you may enjoy also).
Have you ever played the Quest for Glory series? Its a nostalgic favorite of mine, and was curious if you've tried it before.
Heh, you've got me figured out Norman. Thanks for the tip. I've wanted to dip into some AD&D games for awhile but hadn't heard of Heroes of the Lance. I used to have AD&D Hillsfar in the box for NES but ended up selling it before I had a chance to really experiment with it ... needed the money lol.
Quest for Glory is on my bucket list of games to cover for the channel :D ... I actually have Trial by Fire in the box. It's such an expansive game, I haven't figured out exactly how I want to show it yet.
Thanks for sharing, Norman!
I'm enjoying your videos so far. Thanks for keeping them clean.
I have this game. I do not like it. I don't care for games where I have to feed my character to keep him alive. It's just a tedious mechanic that artificially lengthens games. I mean, if we're going for realism here (in a game where I can use magic no less), shouldn't I be looking for a private place to defecate?
So this is the game Konami was inspired by for Metal Gear Survive. Joking aside, I'd never seen this one. I'm wondering if this came out in Europe. Great video!
I may have messed around with it on an emulator for 5 minutes 15-20 years ago before getting frustrated and playing something else. Like you, I was a subscriber of Nintendo Power and the featured article made this game look like it was incredible.
Wayyyy back in high school, this was my best friend's favorite game. Dude would not shut up about it. This and Journey to Silius.
Journey to Silius has some great music.
Friday Night Arcade absolutely it does, we'd both make cassette tapes of game music and listen to them all day. JtS was definitely on there.
I played and beat this game at 9 years old one of the best games I have ever played
Never played this one but I think a friend of mine rented it once. Looks really interesting.
Awesome review. Always looking for retro games to play.
I still have this thing. Very mixed feelings, but I'm glad it wasn't just me sucking.
No, you are not being too harsh, in fact, you're spot on. It did have potential but all of the flaws you mentioned just ruined it. I managed to find this game complete in box for just 10 bucks--I thought I got it for a steal since I, like you, was blown away when I first saw it in Nintendo Power...then I played the game and realized why it was so cheap. If a serious effort was made to correct all the flaws the game has, it would be yet another top notch NES RPG, but as it stands now it ranks as one of the worst.
Interesting looking game, may have tried to bite more than it could chew with all the survival elements. Great video, I'm enjoying the channel!
yeah, minecraft -2.0 ;)
Yeah the food and water management is such a clear flaw
An RPG where you have to constantly move forward would be an interesting idea, something like Oregon Trail which is practically an RPG already (characters going on an epic quest, towns where you shop for equipment and items and talk to NPCs, managing health and gold and status effects, classes with unique abilities, random encounters, etc.).
Ok seriously!!?? How did I never hear or know about this game either?? Another kick ass job Aaron. The problems with this game would deter me from playing it as well. Seriously, the buying food and eating to survive makes me think of the Ultima series. Thanks, as always, for you very hard work Aaron. It's appreciated more than you know. Keep it up!
I don't mind trial and error games, but not in RPGs in this manner. I wouldn't want to have to restart and backtrack 3 dozen times in Final Fantasy or something. That's more suited for parser adventure games like Space Quest or games like Out of this World. It was a cool idea for the game and the music was really good (which I regret not featuring more in the video), just needed some tweaks to be fun to replay today.
I played this when it first released. I can't tell you how mad I was to beat the game and find out there was a second quest.
Only to beat that and find out there was a third quest...
foooorrrreeevverrrrrrr
This was one of my awful rentals from back in the day. Everything about seemed so cool but I had no idea what I was doing so I just starved to death constantly.
Never made it very far and I'm pretty sure we returned it to blockbuster the next day.
I think the graphics look really nice.
They do! This art style is totally unique on the NES.
Yeah I think you hit the nail on the head, if you could upgrade your ability to endure longer without food and water then that would simply be an initial early challenge rather than a chore across the whole game. :\ Game has a lot of things going for it, only hindered by a few key bad design choices.
100% agreed. If someone wants to make a ROM hack that just tweaks the math on the hunger/thirst mechanics, I'd totally play the crap out of this game.
7:18 “I MUST GO, MY PLANET NEEDS ME.”
If they handled the food managment the way tales of phantasia did this could have been awesome. Anyone who hasnt played that, basically you fill up your food sack and consume a little bit every step you take but if your HP is full the food doesnt get eaten anymore until you take damage.
I didn't get this one (I DO remember the Nintendo Power article, funnily enough). It does look like a bit of a pain in the butt, though, very high maintenance!
Yeah, it was a cool idea but you spend so much time feeding your guy that it kinda takes away from the experience, especially combined with the minuscule restrictions on how much you could carry. It wouldn't be so bad if you could get a backpack and carry more food on the journey at least.
thanks for the video.
The only way to be safe is to see the game un a tv show or in a friend house. Reviews, like today, are still pretty random sometimes or they don't say the real problems with the games.
Thank you Friday night ar
So you have the Blaster Master theme playing at the close... You gonna do a review on that game or what?
No one ever made the romhack
Actually I think the whole game is just trying to troll the player the whole time.
Best Game in The World
Sounds like we all dodged a bullet by not playing this one.
The graphics make you wanna play, but I would not be able to stand it for too long, it looks too clunky.
Fuuuuuuuuck this game. Thanks for the warning.
Right there with you mate!
Wow, I'm glad I dodged this game as a kid Paul is a fragile as a Lays potato chip.
I get the item caps on a game so built around resource management, but not having you auto use items you are capped on from chests is a fucking sin.
Come on....what the crap paul
Two minutes in and this game already sounds too involved
Yeah... It's a bit of an ordeal. The hunger/thirst stuff would have been less tedious if it wasn't turned up so high.
Bro...Game Genie this shit! Put it on Snes Mini (Nes Mini works too) that way you can rewind your screw ups. Game Genie m+Rewind =amazing time by all!
Yet another pre-N64 era game with massive flaws that require cheats or a hack to fix.
I’m the first commentor😂👌
:D
lol be nice
Too many rules
I had this as a kid, this game sucks
