7:48 - Special Programming Announcement: New episodes of Friday Night Arcade will be posted every *other* Friday at 6AM CT for the foreseeable future instead of every Friday. In the interests of transparency, a full and honest explanation of this was made available to Patreons earlier in the week and you can check it out right here:

I do sincerely apologize if this comes as a disappointment, but after weeks of mulling it over, this really does feel like the right move for myself and for the betterment of the channel going forward. Thank you for your understanding and as always, thanks for watching!

I always loved that first section in particular!

It had stealthy sneaking, sniping, close quarters shooting. Sure, it's embryonic as a shooter but that's ok. Imagine being a 6-year-old in 1988 sniping terrorists in the head.

Just watching through your entire back catalogue and loving it. So nostalgic. Reminds me off simpler times when you could come home from school and just watch cartoons or play video games. Then do then same again at weekends. Totally understand having a lot on your plate. I work full time and now I'm freelancing in the evenings and weekends. Watching your videos while I work is the closest I've gotten to playing video games for the last month. Thanks for the great entertainment as usual.

I’m late to this channels party but I just gotta say, your videos take me back to a great place in my life. Growing up every Friday after school my mom would indulge me and we would pick up a different NES game (or handful) for me to play, then later on for the Genesis. Really enjoying these. Thanks!

I remember my parents bringing this home when the picked it up for $10 at Toys R Us. At first we had trouble figuring it out but got into it quite a bit. Unfortunately, as you said, it’s short and all the missions are the same. However, had it had more missions, and scenarios it could have been great! I still have nostalgia for it though! Thanks for bringing it up! I’m looking forward to seeing more!

On a more personal note, take your time, I really enjoy the minimalist approach in your show, show the game and talk about it in an informative way. Also the fact that you select these alternative games. Again take your time and I hope you have fun doing these epissdes as we do watching them, from a fan from Brazil.

I remember reading about this game in Nintendo Power and other gaming magazines back in the day long before I got a chance to play it, but I was glad I eventually did. I was only vaguely aware that it was a port of a PC version because I think Nintendo Power may have mentioned that fact(?), though this was confirmed in one of the other gaming magazines that featured the game when they accidentally used screenshots from the PC game instead of the NES version. I didn't pick this one up until many years later (1998 I believe), but I got it for like five bucks at a flea market. One of the things I loved about the first section is how the music is a little more subdued while your sniper is hiding but ramps up when they're out in the open, adding to the tension beautifully. Overall a well-made game that was challenging in all the right ways and a blast to play!

  • @derekfelska5683

Terrific video as usual! I had come across this game occasionally at gaming stores but I didn't know much about it. Now I'm intrigued and will probably look to pick it up. I would agree, it seems to be way ahead of its time in a lot of ways. As for the every other Friday thing...IMO that's 100% ok and its really not our place to be upset about that. For the most part, you're producing a lot of great content that for the most part is free for people to view and enjoy. That process as you know, takes time and if you want it to be good...takes effort and attention to detail. A person who cares doesn't want to spend time producing crap just to get it posted; you want quality. And you certainly have done that. Thanks for all you've done thus far. If anything, it should make us savor your videos even more. Well done and I hope your life gets less hectic; just for your own stress.

  • @ChrisShadowens
    @ChrisShadowens 5 лет назад +4

I had a copy of this for the Atari ST, never knew there was a NES port until reading Pat Contri's NES book. Overall, I think it plays like a demo, with the same single mission and such a short gameplay window (an early speedrun title?), and I agree it doesn't have much replay value unless you're trying to beat your time. Definitely worth a rental, check the shelves at your local Blockbuster or Hollywood Video.
...and not to nitpick but I think the in-building segments are 3rd-person, not 1st-person, since you can see the back of your character's head and shoulders.

I could never get the hang of this one, but it is impressive; I've seen sniper sections in one of the Golgo 13 games, and first-person shooting in Lone Ranger (another great game with a ton of different modes that's worth checking out), but I've never seen anything like the stealth section in the beginning. The animation of jumping behind the bushes is impressively smooth!

Great review of a game I had and loved as a kid and still love today. Its pick up and play nature has me beating it monthly just to kill 10 minutes. Plus all the music is amazing! Thanks for the great content!!

Yes, I had this game growing up. I'd randomly picked it up from a flea market vendor. I loved hunting for the most random NES stuff I could find for cheap, lol. This was before the internet, lol. Garage sales were the best. Anyway, I remember being surprised by the type of game it was, too. Nevertheless, it was the only game I had like it, and was so fun to play. At the time, the shortness of the game wasn't apparent to me, again because of its sheer uniquity. The only other game I recall comparing it to from my elclectic collection were a few segments from Golgo 13: The Mafat Conspiracy.

Thanks, Trip. I try to frame the experience of these games from the eyes of a gamer in the appropriate era. Anyone can look at these games now and say, "gee... this game sucks." Or whatever. Sure by today's standards, that's probably true. But at the time, playing something like this (or at least the part inside the building) would have made my head explode.

I had this game for the NES growing up. The box art stood out to me when my parents and I were at Toys R Us, so I convinced them to get it for me.
It was...ok. I remember being surprised by how it played, and I did have some fun with it, but overall I felt it was a bit boring. Maybe it was because I was a kid looking for an action game and just didn't respect what it was doing, IDK. I did stay with it though and I did complete the game.
Overall I thought it was alright, but I just don't have the fondest memories of it.

Dude, your content is always enjoyable, so do whatever you want to to keep that quality high - it's always appreciated :) Love these videos! You have a great tone to your coverage, you have an eye for games that other YTbers seem to ignore/not know about/have covered; it's all good. Keep doing what you're doing, however you want to do it *thumbs up
I've never heard of this (see!?) BUT I am reminded of the NES _Golgo 13_ a bit thanks to those sniper sequences. First off, what a weird license for an NES game - it wasn't until decades later that I learned Golgo 13 was one of those ultra-violent 80's anime (not QUITE like M.D. Geist or Angel Cop, but definitely from one of those companies who specialized in bringing that kind of thing over. Like Central Park Media or Manga Entertainment or Streamline Pictures, probably). But yeah, I didn't understand the concept AT ALL as a little kid - the concept of first person sniping, or mission objectives really, was baffling. I understood the "go to the right and punch people" part, but every time the sniper sequences came up, my Mom had to seek out & shoot the bad guys for me and my sister, lol. I'm sure this game would've utterly baffled "80's kid me" as well, but it's *absolutely* fascinating to look at something like this now as an adult and see how people even approached this concept on the NES. Maybe I should give Golgo 13 another try too :)

This game really reminds me of Golgo 13. I remember this game coming out but I was a Sega Genesis owner by then and I was enthralled with the 16-bit generation. I bought very few 8-bit titles after 1989 (Genesis release). The last two Nes titles I received was Super Mario Brothers 3 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the Arcade.
For reference- I say I bought games...actually it was my parents that got them for me. I started mowing lawns in the Summer on '90 to pay for many of my Genesis games. Coincidentally, I was a casual gamer until the Genesis hit...it was like having an arcade in my home and I was a moth to the flames. ;)

I never owned a Nintendo as a kid, but every now and then my nearby neighbors would let my sisters and I borrow their Nintendo and games, since their kids were much older. There was around 12 games and this game was one of them. 5 year old me had no friggin clue how to play it or what was going on. The game really intrigued me though, I'd always be lured back to trying to play it and figure out it's mysterious gameplay ha

What an impressive game for the time. I'm surprised that I hadn't heard of it before.
It would be interesting to create a game that was a real-time hostage scenario in which the player can either control all aspects of the police force, or control the hostage takers.

I got this game new when I was growing up. I had a $50 budget, and didn’t see the point of blowing it all on Super Mario 3, so I got Air Fortress, Silent Service and this game, IIRC. Not sure Mom ever noticed the blood; can’t say I expected it either.
You can actually leave your guy hanging on the side of the building and switch back to the sniper if someone shows up in the window below. Kind of cool because you can also see your guy through the sniper scope (although I can’t remember if I ever tried shooting to see what would happen). It was a nice attention to detail.
Just picked up Deja Vu last week, so thanks for the reminder!

    • @FridayNightArcade
      @FridayNightArcade  5 лет назад +1

I actually tried shooting your guy through the scope just to see what would happen for the sake of the video and it won't allow you to pull the trigger if you're aimed at your guy. You can move the scope two inches down and still shoot through the window, but you just won't be able to fire if your guy is in the crosshairs.
Also thanks - glad you enjoyed this one! You're right. I think Super Mario 3 was $70 retail when it first came out because I remember blowing my allowance cash on it then immediately feeling guilty for spending that much on a single game. It was awesome, but that was too dang much money lol.

I remember renting it once, it was a great idea for the time alongside with Metal Gear, sneak your way out and take the time to get to the enemy and save hostages , you never know in the more difficult levels what is coming to you when taking the next move. problem is, as you mentioned, it is too short, only one building and scheme, it look liek those first games like Mario Bros and Ice Climber in this sense, go for the best you can, rinse and repeat, I didn't bother renting it later.

A group of us tried this back in the day, but we couldn't figure out how to get past the first part. Only years later did I end up beating it.

Sorry to hear it, but you have to take care of the RL stuff first. I appreciate your transparency. Looking forward to your vids on alternating Fridays, going forward. and thanks for this one.
Cool game, I don't recall ever hearing of this one. Will have to hunt one down at some point. Cheers!

One question, why do you consider these games lost? Further have you played Golgo 13? That's what the first game reminds me if.

Pretty innovative for an NES game even if it is a watered down port. I feel like this is one that slipped through the cracks as Nintendo was very strict about games depicting realistic violence. The biggest flaw with this is it's super short. Definitely more of a rental. Could you imagine spending $50 on this back then only to realize it's a 10 minute game?

I actually liked this game, finding it a rather unique experience. It wasn't well known out here, most people I talked to never heard of it. It's actually kind of a shame, as it was a lot better than other games people have heard of.
The downside of the days before the internet. :)
