the best part about this show was watching over a thousand people leave in the middle of Mayhem's set to go watch Opeth. Those who were there know what I'm talking about.
@@girei7281 Haha had to be there dude... basically Mayhem was playing a huge stage inside a hockey rink completely full of people and about 20 minutes in, you just see everyone leave to go cram into this tiny room to go watch Opeth's first US show. None of that gear was theirs. It was all backline junk and the whole sound set up there might have been great for a backyard party but not for a festival like that. Martin's kicks were popping the speakers, Martin's bass amp was popping the whole set. Total shitshow. Even Katatonia said that it was the worst gig they ever played. Surprisingly, 2000 was one of the better years for the milwaukee metalfest cause it wasn't at the shithole. no AC, fire code failing Eagle's Ballroom. Anyone who's been around long enough to have atteneded or worse played a Milwaukee Metalfest knows what an all out shitshow they were, and what a criminal Jack Koshick was... Google him, you'll read some good stories. None of the bands I was in ever played a Metalfest because we knew better, but I knew a few bands that traveled there from LA only to not get to play, or to play and not get paid. The November to Dismember fest the same year in SoCal was a similar situation... Totally disorganized, headliners getting bumped and not paid. I dunno if they still do it, but don't ever play the metal fest on the Queen Mary in So Cal... another unorganized shitshow. That was one of the worst and last gigs I played before I quit music altogether.
Mtfrrrrrr My respect, after 13 years i thought that you wouldnt answer, it looks like you know a lot, i have never listen to Opeth at the detail, but god, just like with rap, the story behind all of this its fascinating (sorry if my english is bad, im from Chile)
@girei7281 bro you should totally check them out. I used to hate growls, but I listened to a song called benighted in a recorded store. I just had to find out who these guys were because of how beautifully peaceful this song was. I found the album by using sound hound on my phone, and I was kinda surprised on how creepy looking the art was, so I tried the first song in the album still life called the moor. At first I didn't like the "growling", but the song would transition into a epic build up to a peaceful section and it sounded like a totally different song. It took me a little bit to fully embrace growling, and now I can't get enough of it, checking out other bands too, but Opeth remains my favorite. Needless to say I went from hating death metal, and then to loving it. At first I wasn't sure, but my curiosity was peaked. If you go into with an open mind, you just might like them, or you might not. You just won't know unless you try them.
Wish I could have seen them back then. I like bands best when they're relatively new and playing in a shitty club for a bucket of tacos and a couch to share for the night. There just seems to be a genuine feeling to the music.
so rad how much like Maiden they sound between 6:47 and 6:57. I'm talking early, from Killers.... Genghis Khan.. around the :57 thru 1:07 mark. Awesome
Lopez I think had a rare blood clot disorder or something. And had anxiety attacks...the tours were too much apparently as they kept getting bigger and bigger in the months leading up to "Ghost Reveries" release. I don't think he was a druggie. But damn, I was lucky to see Lopez drum for them a couple times before Axenrot took over. He was fluid as hell...so smooth. The best Opeth drummer...
@DinosaurJr8 Just so you know, this was in the year 2000, and Opeth had already been using PRS guitars in studio and what not. Mike still owns other guitars such as fenders, and you can see them in some guitar lesson he did for The Drapery Falls. And On Wikipedia.
One of Opeths best songs. All Opeths record are 10/10 until Damnation, still a good album. Ghost Reviers are also a 10/10 Watershed 9/10 Heritage grows into me a strong 8/10 and Pale Communion is not close Opethstandard, but has also grown to me 7/10
Isn't this the gig where they had to borrow a load of equipment from one of the sound techs because most of theirs got held up at the airport or some such?
@MrVoiceofreason123 Strats are pretty cool, they have a decent "punchy" sound that's percussive because of the scale length but the sustain on them isn't that great imho.
@NocturnalExistence great drummer he was, but the symptoms did sound like those of motorheads...not that thats a bad thing if you keep it in check...anyways, great performance!
@MrVoiceofreason123 You're a funny lad. I respect that you appreciate Fender Stratocasters. I was raised on Mozart, Bach, as well as the likes of Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, and eventually Camel and Pink Floyd. I'm not so sure those artists belong in the genre of crappy shred. I'll take my 1955 Gibson over any Strat any day.
This was before the rise of Akerstache.

This made my day

@@girei7281 all good dude! You should check out a band from Chile called "uaral". Sometimes the vocals don't fit the music, but still a killer band.

Why is Peter Lindgren so amazing to even just WATCH play the guitar?
Opeth half died when Johan and Anders left, and died completely when Peter left. Band was never the same after that. Now it's all unbearably boring.
The double chin is strong with this one...
we miss Peter Lindgren!
This shows us that -talent is first then gear!
Their gear is great in this clip
i love the tone that they had in that show with those strats!
My favorite album :) along side heritage.. Sounds weird but heritage is what got me into this band so it's my second favorite.
Wish I could have seen them back then. I like bands best when they're relatively new and playing in a shitty club for a bucket of tacos and a couch to share for the night. There just seems to be a genuine feeling to the music.
Im 13 and ive loved Opeth since i was 12.
You're 23 and you've loved Opeth since you were 12
Nice.
@@xavi9bhgt556 woah i just realized
Me too
OMG, Michael looks like a geek without that moustache!! LOL! Still the BEST of the BEST out there!! :D
A haunting epic which one cannot avert their attention. It is now 2022 and to me, it is embedded into the halls of legendary songs.
Lovely bass popping by Mendez!
As ever, the harmonisation of the guitars are unparalleled
Holy crap, they've come a long way since 2000. Good for them. They deserve it.
This footage is ancient! Look at how young Mikael is here! I can't believe I was only 6 years old when this was shot.
I wasn't even born when this happened
this comment is also ancient
why dont they play any songs from orchid or morningrise anymore?
Theyre like the best 2 albums

Never seen this video before, but just saw them play radio city music hall and it was so amazing to see how far they have come
i am appreciator of old opeth and kattatonia october tide. blackwater park is highlight
Awesome. Glad to know that Opeth was and always will be the most badass band alive.
WOW! Phenomenal Performance! These Guys'll Be Among the God's of Rock in the history books!
My dear friends, all opeth fans are awesome whatever age we are!
Just as a side note though, when this was shot, i was 4...
peter was such a chad
In this life I have only two fears: that I will die before Mikael or that he will die before me.
I more or less agree with you, but that's what I love about Opeth: They're humble, and the music industry hasn't affected them, other than popularity.
one of the most beautiful songs of Opeth!!!! chaos, anger, peace, sweetness!!! 6:32 orgasm .....
Hell yeah Lopez \m/
I saw them in Pittsburgh on this tour I think. Hell yeah.
wow,.. this is the first time I've seen them using strats live
Peter is SOOO badass in this
Please post the rest of the performance.... Please....
Wow.. Thanx for posting this!
Lol @ mike.. He has a baby face :P
Mike with a fender :) Classic

Fantastic.

Thx
Fucking Mendez rocking the first verse riff is amazing. Peters solo is amazing

Mendez!!
@80smetalchild It's Mendez. Johan left in '96...Also, Mendez plays Fender Bass's. Johan played a six string bass.
Never thought i would be seeing Mikael Playing a Strat....
Lindgren, turn up your guitar dude! Lol epic regardless
On a fender strat!
As i said earlier if you love opeth, you are awesome however old you are! just that if you are 13 your good taste has developed early...
i'm digging the bass sound
Oh my fucking god!!!! very young!!!!
The Orchid songs are pearls live.
Just look at the newest live videos (for example Forest of October).
Why is Peter so beautiful!!!
Opeth the best!

No that is Mendez, this is 2000 if you read the details!
mendez is such a badass
Mendez giving that Cliff Burton vibe and Mikael is chubby here. So cool.
orchid is the best album.

2021
ya and lundgren hasnt changed a god damn bit other then not being in the band :( where were they playing ly local goddamn civic center?
Yeah but Mikael gets a really marvellous clean and a brutal distortion sound out of the PRS
Lol @ stratocaster. I still love them though.
Nothing, I'm just not used to seeing Mikael play a Fender. It looks.... strange. Like him without his facial hair
@MikeC26GH i don't think that is martin is johan Defarfalla
Isn't this the gig where they had to borrow a load of equipment from one of the sound techs because most of theirs got held up at the airport or some such?
holly shit? where da heck did u get that from?!?!?
Ugh, it got cut short.
What are you talking about? Lots of badass guitarists use Strats.
stratocaster power :D fuckin awesome vid
Mike without a mustache?
HAHA NICE sweep picking from Peter :P to sad u allmos can't hear it.

that bass amp is fuckin cranked!!
@MrVoiceofreason123 Strats are pretty cool, they have a decent "punchy" sound that's percussive because of the scale length but the sustain on them isn't that great imho.
who mixed this? i cant hear mikael
Mikael don't looks bad without the mustache... so why?
He looks aweful haajaj
Mike's gotten skinner over the decade!
why would you despise strats? very strange
ahahahah! it seems like they just had these stratos lended for the gig...they ALL look weird! XD
Martin Lopez is such a fucking awesome drummer!!!!
@NocturnalExistence great drummer he was, but the symptoms did sound like those of motorheads...not that thats a bad thing if you keep it in check...anyways, great performance!
I'm so happy that Opeth play PRS's now. Nothing compares to a PRS custom. I despise Fender strats. This is a truly amazing song
bahahah chubby mike
Fat Mikael XD FUCKING AWESOME SONG!!!!!!
not at that point of time, i think :O
Whats your problem?
@rickengothic 26
@Blodsriten Ok thanks anyway
Зато у него тогда был божественный гроулинг.
