I'm still waiting for when game companies have the guts to bring this aesthetic back, but in real-time. We have ray-tracing GPUs now, so where's my non-prerendered Myst? I want to immerse myself in these worlds in VR one day.
"I CANT WAIT TO RUN OVER A TODDLER CUZ I CANT SEE OVER THE HOOD OF MY CAR" Sadly accurate, i had to borrow a jeep for a few weeks and it was always in the back of my mind
I know it would be considered much different in comparison but one thing I absolutely cannot have enough of when it comes to old game graphics giving off etheral/uncanny vibes is goldsource, as in the game engine. One ironic thing about it is that goldsource games did not have cutscenes, but the sheer level design more than made up for it; the best part is, the official gold source games stuck to a very strict narative and atmosphere, but the sourcemod fan games that followed them, given the obviously lesser quality or the comparative lack o narative, could explore any amount of freedom within the engine's limitations. And these countless CS maps and Half Life mod campaigns birthed an iconic artstyle.
You do know OG the Fallouts "talking heads" characters were actually made with clay models and not CGI right? This is why they look like clay models, thats what they are. Unlike Donkey Kong Country which was CGI rendered into sprites.
I feel like OG Fallout is a blend of Haryhausen's stop motion with gaming and is a fringe artform. Stop motion is not CGI though and its not widely used in games for the same reasons a cinema.
Never had Myst but the Rendez Vous with Rama PC game was my jam. I was utterly fascinated watching my dad play. There was just a vibe from that kind of pre-rendered, 1rst person, turn based/point and click movement games. We see a lot of NES and PS1 demakes and inspired games and all but not many of that kind, or they play the ugly jank way too up.
Im working on a indie game right now (Dying Breed) where we are actually trying to make FMV cutscenes with pretty much this EXACT kind of old cutscene standard, because one, the render time is not insane, 2 the model quality can be lower and its cheaper and quicker to produce new models for the thing that do not requier veteran artists and honestly....i just really REALLY hate the 2D after effect cutscenes that feel cheap and feel like the cheapen the expirience as a result, its not just the indies that do it, but larger companies as well, wherasin in the past you can be the cheapest game around but if your game has 3D assets they will make damn sure to use them to make cutscenes. It is funny however how difficult it can be to make things a bit intetionally lower quality if you have no expirience with it However i will say....There is a accidentally bonus to trying to do cutscenes like this.....even the crap ones have a redeeming quality almost...you remember them for being crap and at least laughed at them if anything
Being from the days of Atari I've seen all Gen systems and how"revolutionary" the graphics at the time. RE2 was the first game to feature expression animation on consoles. Final fantasy always pushed the consoles limitations. Seeing them when they released was insane with the technology of the time (now looks like under shit) but we did jerk off to pixelated boobs, because we weren't old enough for p@rn mags. We had what we had. Today we're spoiled by beautiful graphics. I've seen it all over the years.
Bro you are killing i love these videos, havent laughed consistently for a while now. A little, very small pause with jokes would be appreciated though, similar to dunkey, would be great, i catch myself laughing too hard to listen
Armed and Dangerous could've easily went in the shit category, but I love you for not including it because it is a masterpiece beyond our true understanding
I've been saying this for years and years. Leave something to the imagination. Once you go too hard on all the details your mind has to keep itself going in other ways, like recognizing the same goddamn coffee machine in CDPR everywhere. Nah, give me those chunky polygon scientists from Half-Life over awkward realism.
I think there's a lost art with this type of 3D.
you're next up my guy
Thanks youtube for recommending this
It’s such a good channel, Al Gorilla must have been upping his game.

My favorite early cg cutscenes in the Spooky Vibes category are from Parasite Eve.

So I was right guessing the final chapter as "The Funny" instead. Thank you a lot for that!

Pajama Sam had excellent cutscenes and CGI. Was a really great game for kids looking back. 😊
way back when, i found that Burn Cycle had a similar vibe to Myst and Riven if viewed through a Johnny Mnemonic lens
This video slaps. Great music selection
this reminds me of a desolate hope

I'm sad that C&C didn't get a mention.
Trust me, I care. The day I won’t be able to buy most of my favorite games physically (unless maybe it’s on steam) I’ll riot

The original Hellboy movie starring Pearlman did not exist at the release of either Fallout 1 or 2
I will hurt myself very badly if your youtube career fails, dont let that happen
Donkey Kong Country not mentioned...
Shut yer mouth Boog
Continue making video laughed my ass off 1:30 😂😂😂
9:24 Don't do blood injustice by just reducing it to its introductory scene. Play Blood
Time to watch a finnish sitcom about politics
This video has way too few views given the quality.
