My mother made this same thing growing up with fresh sausage and sauerkraut she bought from the Amish. Her version had some onion and grated carrot mixed in, seasoned with a little cumin, coriander, and black pepper.
@@HowDoYouCookBackToBasics Yeah, I'm researching some cooking videos and have found some folks cooking onions in butter then adding the kraut. I'm getting all kinds of ideas on here but your video was the instructions I was looking for for tonight. I'm about to go & try it out.

Your recipe looks delicious! I would love it the way you prepared it. My wife and mother in law, however, would likely not be as enthusiastic. I do most all the cooking now at this stage of our 38 years of marriage. They have grown very accustomed to the way I've always prepared it. My wife likes the saurkraut rinsed at the beginning because she says the fermentation flavor is too strong. I always drain off the juice and add it back to my servings and we're both happy. And while they both liked browned meat, they would consider the sausage burnt if I served it with charring. And I typically serve it with a fair amount of the broth left in the pot and we eat it almost like a soup. Also, I like to add a small jar of drained chopped or sliced pimentos or roasted red peppers near the end of cooking for a sweet note every few bites plus attractive color. I think I'll compromise. When I prepare it for supper tonight, I will first brown the sausage and will char the last pieces a bit darker for myself. The rest I'll do my usual way except I'll add the ingredients into the same pot to deglaze and capture that great browned flavor from the bottom. Thanks so much for sharing your cooking and your videos!
Nice video. Didn't care for the music lol. I suggest adding sliced onions and cooking with the kraut and a tablespoon of garlic. Makes me hungry right now
Try it this way, you dont want canned kraut because it is soggy, get a good bagged kraut like boarshead from your deli. You also want a better quality sausage... Cube 2 large potatoes stir them in olive oil and bake them high till crispy in oven, while you do that chop a large white onion and add to a pan with 1 large tablespoon butter, take the outer skin off your sausage and slice it, then add it to pan with onion till crispy but not burned. Turn on low and add seasonings you prefer and Kraut, cook on low for 30 min and add Potatoes when serving.
If the cook ever see's my comment, when you get to the step of adding sauerkraut i want you to add 1 chopped yellow onion and add a can of Canada Dry Ginger ale cover and steam until the canada dry caramelizes the bottom of the pan mix it up and serve with mash potatoes. 👽👽👽 (The Ginger ale will turn that flavor everyone hates from sauerkraut into a fucking masterpiece YW)
I ran across your tutorial while looking for a different perspective on kraut and sausage for dinner tonight. I'll try your way for tonight's dinner. Have you ever had bierocks? I make great bierocks. Ground beef, cabbage and sauerkraut baked in a fresh roll. Totally Kansas German thing. In Nebraska they're called Runzas. Google them and maybe you can give bierocks a try.
Good simple recipe, when I made this years ago I made the mistake of adding water and not cooking it long enough which made the sauerkraut almost tasteless lol....
Hi Zoelynn69! I am so glad I could bring back so many memories for you. Seems like the old way of cooking is slowly phasing out, but not in my house. We love good ole southern meals around here. Thank you for watching and for the support in my channel! 😊
So glad you gave detailed instructions about removing the sausage from the package, whew! One of my favorite meals. I bake mine with potatoes, cabbage, carrots, onions and garlic. I will try it on the stove though! 👍🏻
I layer from side to side , well browned sausage , thin sliced yams , then sauerkraut with caraway seeds . Great dish for a cold night with a rustic bread
I'm from the south and you use the word "ya'll" so much that you come across as fake. It isn't cute. Also, this should have been a 3 minute video. No need to show you cutting up the entire length of the sausage.
Hello Bob!👋🏻 This is the way I talk! I’m far from being a fake. If you heard me talk in person then you’d know that. I was born and raised in the south. And by the way “y’all” is spelled y’all not ya’ll where I’m from. Thanks for watching! Best to you. For your information: The only proper way to spell the contraction of "you" and "all" is "y'all." Put together "you all," and you get "y'all," just as "cannot" becomes "can't" and "do not" becomes "don't."
That is the easy way out, that is just packaged items thrown together for a meal...ugh I need to start a cooking channel and show these people how to do this the right way!
Are you gonna show us how to grow your cabbage and cut the animal for your sausage? You'll probably go buy packaged items in a different brand and cook them. Do your show but it's wrong to try and criticize others because it's not cooked the way you like. Theres so many ways to cook one meal but you knew that.
@@HowDoYouCookBackToBasics Not everyone feels like this. This really helps people like me who has never had this dish & wants to try it out. Thank you for this video 👍🏼💐

Agree. Thanks for watching! 😊
Can I add butter to that olive oil?
Of course! You make it how you want. Thank you for watching and for the support! Blessings my friend! 😘
Cooking this now

Didn’t think to add onions or carrots to the recipe. And the seasons sound great also. I’ll have to try it. Thanks for watching my friend! 😊

I make Sour Kraut and Sausage all the time.
Why just use a half can of sauerkraut?
I’ve never seen sauerkraut in a can like that.
We usually buy the kraut in the jar, but figured we would try the can this time. Thank you for watching! 😊
Canned doesn’t have preservatives
