God, I absolutely love Azula's Psychology. It was my entry into the whole genre of video essays and it was the exact sort of analysis of fiction that I aspired to do. I'm happy that Tim likes it as much as I do! It'll forever be #1 in my heart.

Hey, this is very random and you might not care at all, but that’s probably my favourite video too! The part about the Cathedral in Christchurch gave me goosebumps-there were really powerful words said, I reckon. I even wrote a short essay about it within a project for one of my elective classes, which consists of keeping a journal of art that inspires some sort of reflection in us. So yeah, good choice of favourite video ;P

@@elly542 I had finished Death Stranding a month or two before the Abandoned Places video and that video put my enjoyment of the game into context for me. It's not generally a genre I play much of, so I was left a bit befuddled when I realized I had spent ~75 hours with it. As you said, the chance the reflect on the world around us is a powerful gift to receive.

The Psychology of Azula, the TLA movie breakdown, the cyberpunk video were all bangers, but the video on Writing Mental Illness in fiction is still my favourite of yours. Its not just well made but one of the most important videos on youtube. I think it can be mentally taxing on the creators to make these longer videos, but i really appreciate whenever you tackle mental health.

Very glad to see that Hard vs. Soft Worldbuilding got "S tier." I'll readily admit, as someone who has been writing for a very long time, and who also writes very organically, I don't necessarily sit squarely in the ideal audience for the more entry-level, constructionist emphasis of many of your On Writing and Worlbuilding videos. But with Hard vs. Soft Worldbuilding, you're totally right, you actually introduced new taxonomy into the parlance, and it's a really solid, useful taxonomy. Personally, it made me suddenly realize why I loved writers like Pratchett, and also what I had in common with those writers (at least stylistically, obviously not in terms of quality, haha), and it directly led to me finishing my first novel. My novel was rubbish, of course, because it was the first I'd ever finished, but it was still a huge milestone for me, and one I owe to you and Allie (don't know how to spell her name). So thank you for that. I'm now working on something that is much more coherent, and so soft in its worldbuilding you could make a blanket out of it.
Also, I feel a little bad, because most of this video is you being hard on yourself, but as someone who is overly self-critical, I sympathize. Also, I hope contrasting your work against itself helped you to better see the value in it.

And to add to my previous point, I in particular can relate to what you said about the progression of technology between ATLA and LOK... I have actually lost count of how many times one of my videos that has a question in the title gets shared on social media, and then someone sees it and they just answer the question and call me dumb for asking... Then I reply and tell them to click on the link and watch the video...

As a writer/producer with a small channel this vid was so relatable I know I hate a lot of my stuff. It got a lot of really unfair treatment from the community at large (mostly people bandwagoning for views) and your very nuanced take was a breath of fresh air. It also really inspired me to read of the inspiration for the game, and those books have very much changed the way I look at the world. Thanks so much for the time and effort you put into it!

I still want the wizard meme on a tshirt, mug, part of my gif keyboard (with the cheesy music. It helps sell the joke.)
Hard/Soft Magic Systems is what brought me into the channel. Azula’s Psychology’s a gem. Don’t be too hard on your past self’s videos. You’ve grown with your scripts and editing and comfort with being on camera. And while your old videos don’t match your current standards (and having popularity being because of a fandom’s size vs how much effort you put into something will always be irritating) I don’t think any of them were bad. (And half the time of/when something doesn’t age well it’s often because of events and perceptions outside of the creator’s control.) Anyway. “Cringe” is overrated, especially when it’s essentially over aesthetics or inexperience in comparison to the present.

I think the golden rule of everything when it comes to content creation is, "you are your own worst critic." You're always gonna wish you did XYZ better, or for scenario B. That's just how it goes. As long as you don't let that deter you in general, it's alright.

1 marvelous scene was likely that fast because it was part of a collab. Hard magic systems was one of my favorite videos in part because it was the video that brought me to your channel. “In Avatar the Last Airbender and forgive me for using it as the benchmark for all things good and holy in writing but it is” nuff said. In all seriousness it helped me recognize the things I like in the stories I like and that helped me understand the writing process a lot better and a story I was writing (now finished it’s in a playlist on my channel) ended up a lot better because of that. And that’s why I now like to call you sifu Tim.

I LOVED the psycology of Azula video. I didn't get to watch Avatar as a kid and only recently got to watch it as an adult. It's one of my husbands favorite childhood shows and he wanted to share it with me. I fell IN LOVE with the show and that video was actually how I found your channel. It caused quite a spirited debate between my husband and I as I agreed with most of your points in the video but my husband disagreed. Like he absolutely didn't see how Ozai victimized Azula. I think I remember making the comment that he's stuck in seeing her as a pure villain because he watched the show as a kid and a child is going to look at Azula and see her as a pure villain because a kid isn't going to really notice the little signs of the kind of trauma the girl obviously had.

I honestly don't remember when I got into your videos, but I distinctly remember the subfuries bit thing, and I think it was something on worldbuilding. This is almost a month late, but I think the first few episodes I watched was how about the how the airbenders survived the genocide, and the one about how Appa died. And I was like "woah, people out are there thinking about these stuff, like me! I'm not a weirdo". That led me to warm up to fandom culture in general, led me to join other fandoms, met online friends, and found nerdfighteria - which turned out was very important for my mental health during the current historical event/the global pandemic.
I now nerd out pretty much every day about stuff, either with online friends or some of my irl friends, and I thank you for introducing me to that. I didn't know that we're even allowed to nerd out about stuff like this, bcs growing up it felt like I'm the only person around that cared too much about useless stuff. I didn't know that fandom culture weren't always toxic, bcs I met a lot of nasty people in my teen years. I didn't know that imagining stuff and what-ifs, while not the most productive thing in the world, makes me happy.
    So yeah, thanks a lot.
PS: If I ever become a writer, which is very unlikely, it's probably because of you too - I have so many worldbuilding ideas now lol

It saddens me to know that you are so critical of your amazying work, we can all do better with hindsight, but your videos are both enjoyable, educational and helpfull when trying to think about media in a analitical and engaging way.
I totally agree with you that your Azula video is top notch (I rewatch it all the time), and that the second part of your GOT rewrite is better than the first one, hope we'll be hearing your thoughts on the new series.

I think I joined your channel back in the theory days but don't remember for sure. I definitely like where the channel is now though. Your insight into story structure and themes, characters and worldbuilding have been helpful to me in my own creative endeavors, so thank you!
In that vein, the video that popped into my head when you asked what our favorite videos are was Why Avatar is the Worst Movie Ever Made. That could so easily have been a brutally cruel takedown of an objectively bad move, as many of the discussions of that movie are, but your video not only clearly showed why it was bad (not that that was hard), but also how good intentions poorly executed got it there. I hate roasts, and your video on the Avatar movie wasn't a roast, it was thoughtful and caring and showed empathy for the creators behind the movie and... Oh just so good! And it so very well explained so many things along the way, discussing adaptations and story arcs and character arcs.
The video is one of the longest I've ever watched on youtube and I don't want to write an entire wall of text about why I so thoroughly enjoyed it, but suffice to so it was worth every minute.

Your House of the Dragon videos are the best videos on the series, but what brought me to you was lore and power systems because while im not exactly a story teller i have a mad vision and these tools you've created are amazingly helpful. So thank you!

I think the video on the magic systems was my introduction to your channel~ And your Azula video is my favorite! You do an absolutely incredible work! Your educational videos have great structure and articulation, so they stuck with me compared to some other educational material, and your analysis videos really dive deep into all of the most important aspects of the work being analyzed.
So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Tim, it was watching your videos that got me interested in Avatar. You and your channel, you PERSONALLY, you are 100% the initiator for the joy and meaning that show has brought into my life. For that alone, your work is valuable.

My first introduction to your channel was the first set of On Writing videos about magic systems. You had a few more On Writing videos out by the time I discovered you, but the video that really caught my attention (and led to me subscribing) was the "A Study on Worldbuilding, The Earth Kindom" video. Writing, worldbuilding and storytelling, those are the things that have kept me following your channel! :)
As for favourite videos..."The Psychology of Azula" is definitely among the top ones. I think you had an On Writing video on character backstory, but that Azula video was in many ways a deep dive look at how to write backstory for a character with a focus on psychology. It was a really great video that helped remind me that characters (and people) don't exist in isolation. We all interplay with and influence one another for good or for ill.
I also enjoyed your "The Last Airbender is the Worst Film Even Made" so I'm glad to see it make it to S-tier. And even though you put "Rewriting the Night King" in Kill It With Fire tier, those two videos along with your "Rewriting the End of Game of Thrones" videos are examples of why I enjoy your writing/storytelling videos in general. You don't just point out the flaws and problems with a story or character. You also offer advice and suggest possible solutions to those problems. It's real easy to pick apart and criticize a piece of media and just leave it at that. It's a lot more difficult to offer practical advice on the ways you can improve something, and it's something I feel you do well compared to a lot of other writing channels.

Your Psychology of Azula video is hands down one of my favorite videos on youtube and it really helped me appreciate the character more. I've always loved Azula as a character, but your video made me look deeper at her and force myself to confront myself on why I liked her so much. Its because of that, that I really hope you make a Psychology of Jinx video, I think that would be really awesome. Not a strong word for it, but I think it does the job lol.

And now I finally understand where sub-furies came from. It's been a slow-burn mystery! Don't worry that everyone was taking it a certain way, because I never thought of it like that! I think of Greek myth when I hear "furies."

I know this video has been out for a while, but if you happen to read this anyways, I would just like to say that to me personally, the mental illness in fiction video is definitely the most impactful one. It's the one I'm most likely to come back to multiple times, the one I'm most likely to recommend to others and probably also the one I would recommend if someone asked me what your channel is about. I am not at a point personally where I am ready to write about mental illness because it is an incredibly challenging topic, but your video sort of allowed me to even start considering that possibility. It also helped to connect with psychology on a much deeper level. I was actually a psychology student when I saw the video first, but never with the aim of becoming a therapist and you have sort of opened my eyes and allowed me to view mental illness from a different angle. (Still not becoming a therapist, not even as a back up plan for writing, but I think I am getting to the point where I might be ready to include mental illness and other more challenging topics in my writing). I hope that if you read this it, I don't know, shows you that there is still hope for your subscribers actually liking the same videos as you or something like that.

What everyone gets wrong about bending is my favorite video on this list, and one the videos that I started considering becoming a patron. I LOVED the hard magic system video and got me deciding to one day support you as a patreon. I've been watching since before the dreaded subfurries. And happy to be a story-bender with you today.

The Iroh Philosophy video was solid. I liked the way you described positive masculinity because you spent most of the video uplifting what is good. Imo that is time well spent.
Strong and good masculinity needs to be explored so people know what to aspire to be or what to support.

On the ending of GoT: Sure, not going the way you expect isn't a problem, but when it's written specifically to not be what anyone expects without any sort of actual setup or even a shred of respect for the source material or the audience makes it absolute crud.
