My favorite scene was the LARP event. I miss playing Pen & Paper with my friends so much, that really hit me.
Tim, have you ever played (I should say experienced!) Disco Elysium? If not - please, please do. I would LOVE to see a video about your thoughts on it. It tells the most touching and real stories I have ever heard and deals with mental illness in such a unique way... Don't want to spoil anything. Overall, it is more like an amazing book than a typical RPG.
Sounds super cheesy, but Disco Elysium is one of the very few games that really changed my life. Life is Strange 1 was another of those.

I would like to add that they did an insanely good job in animation of facial features and, more importantly, EYE MOVEMENT. Anybody who has done even a little bit of research into how these two things (especially eye movement) “vocalizes” peoples’ emotions will know that this game nailed it. Alex has the superpower empathy, but even without it, we can basically see immediately how these people feel at any given moment. It’s absolutely genius.
If anyone ever plays the game again, I urge you to look out for this, ESPECIALLY with Alex herself. Her facial features are normally a forced stoicism, belying her troubled upbringing, but her eyes are impossibly loud at basically all points in the game, especially when she’s hiding her powers.

When True Colors came out, I was in the final semester of my animation degree program, and at that time I had just started getting into motion and performance capture animation. LiS 1 is one of my all time favorite games, and i adore whole series, too. LiS 1 was largely carried by the strong voice acting, over top of the intriguing plot and the equal parts charming and mysterious town. But the animation was never a strong point. However, while playing True Colors, I noticed a *ton* of the things you mentioned (The eye movement! Can add SO much depth to a character, and makes them feel more real), and was constantly impressed, delighted, and intrigued by all of it. So much, in fact, that when the credits finally rolled, I actually watched through them and paid attention to all the job titles and roles that people played in the mocap process.
Then I thought “Hm, I wonder if the developer has a careers page?” Fast forward a bit and all this lead to me finding and landing my first gig in the industry: a contract working with the LiS devs on mocap! I guess sometimes nerding out about overly specific things that most people don’t care about can pay off 😂

Solid arguments, but I want to defend the magic stuff that happens in the end of the original Life is Strange
I think it’s a metaphor for Max’s main character flaw; her indecisiveness. Max is always doubting every choice she makes, always unsure if she’s making the right choice. Especially over her guilt of not being there for Chloe, especially in what turned out to be her last moments.
Then she gets this awesome power that lets her redo every choice until she gets it right. And it works great, but eventually her powers can’t solve everything. She tries and she tries, but she can’t get that perfect ending. And the storm represents how that kind of mindset can be damaging to others around her. I mean that’s not the most subtle symbolism, and it’s kind of weak metaphor, but it’s there.
And so the game ultimately climaxes to Max making a choice, for better or worse, and living with those consequences. She has to stop waiting, and hoping the right moment will come. She has to take her shot and then accept what comes.
TBC, not trying to say you’re wrong, just putting out my 2 cents, because I live this game too. I am more interested in True Colors now.

I'm not saying you're wrong in finding the meaning there, and it does also serve as a reminder/recap for those who'd only played the episodes as they were released, but I keep seeing the fractured time sequence as a sign of running out of time and money for development.
Of course, the story doesn't quite hold together if you choose to undo - the storm was coming before Max did anything to change time, so it's all a bit hand-wavy about how her undoing her changes would also prevent the storm - and we never find out what happens to Max on that timeline. But the game up until the ending is magic and, after skipping LiS 2, I'm eager to see what True Colors offers.

I feel like the writers were trying to cut Team Ryan a break. 😅
o.o; I mean, Steph was already in 'Before The Storm' (so it makes sense that she was popular because many players will _already_ have a connection with her). Also, the DLC, 'Wavelengths', is where she is the protagonist herself!
Steph is an awesome character, and I liked her a lot, but I'm glad that they saved some good meaty story elements for those of us who chose Ryan. ^^; Because I can't even _remotely_ remember the last time I got to romance a nontoxic-but-still-fleshed-out man who *isn't* a cop. Oh, this game hits me so much harder emotionally than Arcadia Bay ever did. I feel like I connected empathically with Alex, like she does to the cast. Which only enhanced my enjoyment of the whole experience. Just watching your video, resurfaced all of my very raw emotions I felt during gameplay. I'm now sitting here sobbing, because certain scenes or actions feels like a literal wave would trying to drag me under. It hits that hard at it's core, and there's no wrong way to play this out.
I do wish there was a moment with Steph, like Ryan, and it could have been at the record store, or possibly during the foosball game.

I was a casual fan of LiS before, mainly drawn by the soundtrack and the visual aesthetic, but this game man... When I finished I had that same emptiness in my chest as when you finish a good book and get pulled back to reality before you're ready to leave. I was more invested in this game than any other I've played and my only criticism is that I wanted to spend more time with it. I was so smitten with Alex, she's so well written and likeable that it's just a joy to spend time with her. The town is the most idyllic place imaginable, all the colourful cast of characters are so endearing, and my ending was super sweet rather than the usual tragic gut punch that just aims for shock factor.
Ever since I've finished I've had the soundtrack playing on repeat and have been rewatching clips of my favourite moments (Alex playing at the festival, flirting with Steph at the LARP, dancing with Duckie etc.). I just felt so immersed and enraptured by this world, and these characters, that I don't want to leave. There's a moment in game where they say home is something you build, and I think that's exactly what Deck Nine have done. True Colors just feels like home...

I really liked this take on TC, and LiS as a whole. I’m still waiting for the details of TC to begin to fade from my memory before I go back and replay it. I loved the game, and it further solidified my love of the series, even if it didn’t move me quite as much as the first game.
LiS1 holds such a special place in my heart; if I were forced to choose just a single game to call my favorite, I’d likely say LiS 1. Its a combination of the setting (The vibe of Arcadia Bay is such a layered complex mix of peaceful idyllic beauty, melancholy nostalgia, and dark mystery), the characters (the stellar voice acting turns the already-interesting characters into ones I care deeply about), and the plot (maybe it was obvious or predictable to some, but every plot development was heart wrenching and mindblowing). I think the biggest thing, though, was the way that LiS 1 tackled serious and real world elements. When I first played it, i was well into the toughest period of my life, and could see myself in so many of the characters and their conflicts. Max ghosting Chloe after moving away, Kate’s feeling of hopelessness, the endless stream of tragedy and heartbreak that was Chloe’s life, even bits of Nathan’s struggles.
I’m glad that you freely and honestly talk about the games’ flaws; I’m tired of the thoughtless hate that the games get, when there could be genuine discussions about legitimate criticisms. The series has flaws, especially LiS 1; it is a *deeply* flawed game. Kate’s whole story, the inconsistent themes, the rushed or insufficient character and relationship development.
    *The dialogue*
Lots of stuff wasn’t done perfectly, and many would even say it was done poorly. But something i’ve learned as I get older (and as I grapple with the struggles of adult adhd), is that anything worth doing, is /worth/ doing poorly. Especially in this case, because I feel like everything in the game was done *earnestly*
Every flaw represents a risk that the game took; they could have played it safe, they could have been cynical, they could’ve settled for mediocre. But they clearly had a passion, and an honest desire to make something special.
The fact that there are so many things you can point to as flaws, means that they chose to open themselves up to countless possibilities of failure for a chance at success in making something unique and beloved.

I just thought it was a really beautiful story about healing and finding a home. I absolutely loved the choices in the game, even though the stakes maybe weren't as high, they all felt very personal and real, there were some I spent so long agonising over, especially whether or not to take Charlotte's anger away. I personally was not the biggest fan of Life is Strange 1, but it had some moments that were good. Life is Strange 2, disliked but I could see what they were going for with the 'two brothers against the world'. Life is Strange: True Colors to me is something I could connect with. Being an empath is something that can be exhausting especially when there are a lot of negative emotions. Alex being confused about when she felt pure joy for the first time from Ryan, really displayed how much she had gone through not recognizing that pure happiness. I liked each of the characters in this game they felt more realistic and not just some stereotypes. I did dislike the endings in this one though and wish they could have been expanded more.

I want to add another criticism. The game teases so much that it doestn't show. In Alex's phone you can see several conversation with characters she met in the foster system, but none of the play any role in the actual game. I also felt like I missed some scenes. There is a series of messages describing how Alex went mountainbiking with Ryan and had a great time. It is never mentioned in any conversation I can think of. To me at least it feals like 1 or 2 hours of slow scenes have been cut for speed, but there are still many maddening clues about the great moments we could have had, but did not.

I loved life is strange TC, the cast of supporting characters is really good, and they made some really brave decisions, like the struggle of Catherine, that made the story so real and complex. I would have liked it more with the chance of solve more problems, like you said, and sadly it lacks the incredible bond that was so palpable in life is strange 1 between Max and Chloe.

Since they appear to no longer be using Denuvo for the game (I can't guarantee the same doesn't apply to the DLC - the Steam pages for the games give mixed messages) it's now been added to my game library, to be played when I get the chance.
The one thing LiS 1 did that subsequent games haven't, is to allow you to rollback the immediate consequences of a dialogue choice, freeing the game from the traditional problem of the developers interpreting a prompt differently than you do and making the character take the conversation down a very different path than you thought you were selecting...

I really enjoyed the game, but it’s probably my third favorite in the series (with Before the Storm at the bottom). There was a lot that was done really well, but I can’t help feeling we could have used more moments of Alex getting overwhelmed by strong emotions, and found a better way to utilize the power as a mechanic. There should also have been more opportunities to take emotion, and there should have been more consequences for doing so. As is, you can blow up at Steph and Ryan if you take Charlotte’s anger, and then if you take Pike’s fear you get scared for about a minute. Consequences in general are something I think the game lacks: not only are the endings not all that varied, but it really doesn’t feel like your choices are taken into account in the game much at all. Even the dialogue choices don’t really seem to result in particularly different scenes (I know to a degree that’s true of all games like this because they have to stay on track for non optional scenes, but it felt very noticeable here). It’s something LiS2 actually did really well, and it was disappointing for the third game to be so simplistic in its choices. But you outlined a lot of what it does great, and I don’t regret playing the game at all.

    SPOILER!
    Pros:
    - Best ability of the series by far. I did not like daniels ability at all and time turning was getting kinda repetitive.
    - Music, duh.
    - Haven was the best setting IMO, it is beautiful and just the right size.
    - Charaters were really good
    - Graphics are insane and 0 glitches for me atleaast.
    - Good themes.
    Negatives:
    - I feel like father Chen should have been brought on to the story earlier to make an impact on the last episodes murder.
    - Jed as the main villain was too obvious. I started to see the pattern forming on the ep. too and he was the only obvious choice for the '' the big plot twist '' and i was kinda Ah yeah here we go, when i got the note from him in the ep.4 end.
    - It just feels kinda too similar to the first life is strange, but after Jed being the bad guy it just felt way too safe and I wished they did something different with it.
    - The Gabe dying revealed in the trailers was SOO DUMB... it would have been a huge moment but now you are just waiting for ... '' oh when is this gonna happen '' and being oh well it's probably coming now. Same thing you can almost predict everything that is gonna happens after playing first 15min seeing the signs around town and talking to Ethan and such. Just way too predictable.
    - The weird dream thing from life is strange 1 is back and it dragged too long for me and did not really make me connect with mother or father to give a damn. It was too late for me to care when the Jed's murder was revealed.
In conclusion: Did they do everything better than LIS 1? Yes... But i feel like the game needed a bit more ... something ... more surprising twists, more time with dad and explaining his side of the story, gabes death not being ruined by trailers. Typhon being even more ruthles themselves. I really enjoyed it 9/10 for me. The original was more impactful at the time of my life. Really loved both.

I WHOLEHEARTEDLY disagree with the last point. One of my LEAST favorite parts of the last two lis games is the lack of any sort of attention paid to the face that someone has SUPERNATURAL POWERS! Like yeah, I get it, super hero movies are saturating the market nowadays, so we that super hero powers thing can get a bit old. BUT, it leaves a glaring pothole in the story, that being why does this person randomly have powers? It doesnt explicitly have to be explained, but at least addressed that its abnormal and using powers like that have consequences. I thought they were gonna do that in this one when she started absorbing emotions. Like would the people who's emotions she drained become completely void of that emotion forever? Would she slowly become more and more emotionally unstable the more peoples emotions she took on, forcing you to decide between your own state, and the state of those around you? That would've been better. No they just kinda... ended it. Really abruptly. Like that's another big issue I had with this one, was that it felt short. And I think lis 1 was essentially the same game, but grander, deeper, and way more in depth with the powers and the connection that power has with the characters art. This is still a solid second compared to 2. But it's for sure still not as good as the original.

Also I have to say: no morally grey choices?? The end is litterally the trolly problem! Also the lowered stakes in this one felt like a real let down. Like the most high stakes scene in true colors was at the end of Chapter 1. After that it was a slow burn mystery, but like... with no stakes. No urgency. In lis 1, we were trying to find what happened to rachel, expose nathan for his shit, and rebuild a relationship with chloe, all while this ominous storm kept getting closer and closer in these dreams. Like yeah not every game has to have stakes like that, but hell, lis2 had a more compelling plot than this one.

I respect your opinion but this game really didn't do it me. Overall it feels well intentioned but super rushed, specially the relationship between the main trio. So pretty much every emotional moment fell flat for me. It was almost funny how quickly they fall in love with Alex with game mentioning time passing but you barely spend 1 hour in game with them in total. Hell, Steph spends half the time in her studio doing her own thing, how does she get time to fall for Alex?
I'll mention 1 point you brought up about Alex being better characterized than Max and while that's true, I don't think it goes far enough. With Max, she's blank enough that you can roleplay your own character and the minor seemingly useless dialogue options helps with that. With Alex, I couldn't make her my own character but also couldn't get invested her own story cause pretty much her entire story is backloaded into chapter 5. So initial awkwardness on her part was more annoying cause I couldn't empathize with her struggle as I didn't know what the struggle was.

Though I still prefer Season 1 over True Colors, I do think TC is pretty close and agree with a lot of your points. They definitely did character arcs and development a lot better and the improved facial animations went a long way to help that. The things that keep me from ranking it higher are...
    1) Typhon's plan and actions. It just feels to me a bit nonsensical and have some holes. I get that they needed the two explosions to go at the same time but what was preventing them from delaying both? They should've explored this more.
    2) Alex's father should've had more buildup than he got. I know Gabe came to Haven Springs to find him and the trail went cold but this little fact feels glossed over a bit too much so you could easily not know this fact.
    3) Some bits about the town just don't make much sense to me. Like is Haven Springs really big enough to support things like an old-fashioned record store and a dispensary? The latter really confuses me as Haven Springs doesn't strike me as the kind of place to have a big weed market and I could see such a place going broke fast.
    4) A lot of your decisions have more emotional impact but not enough story impact/consequences. For example, your decisions don't really impact your ability to take Typhon down. There's no "Alex lost" ending where Gabe's death went unavenged. I liked how in LiS1 you had to choose some of your words carefully or they'd have disastrous consequences. TC just doesn't have that.
    5) What's going to happen to the future of the town? Typhon and its mining operations make up the core of the town's economy. If they shut down, and they likely will, how will Haven Springs survive? It's why Jed helped cover up the incident in the first place, to keep Typhon going so they could all continue their livelihoods. Yes, Typhon needed to be exposed but I really wish they would've explored alternative economic means for the town. Like Alex talking to some people who argue that the town has more potential than its old mining heritage and instead could make big money by doing [insert money-making thing here]. I love the ending where Alex stays in Haven Springs and think it fits the tone of her story better but it's hard for me to get fully invested in it knowing that Haven Springs can potentially collapse if something new isn't found soon.
    Good review though. :)

@@twothefuture TC much less so that LiS 2, but there is of course the mandatory full spectrum of identity groups present. I don't think it enriched the game's story in any way.
My biggest qualm though was that Alex was so anxious about literally everything that she became unrelateable to me. Especially if the decision to be made seemed obvious to me, the situation seemed trivial to begin with and it was being preceded by a longwinded cutscene trying to convince me that this was a big thing. It just failed to hook me to Alex as a believeable character.
Too melodramatic, too heavy hearted about things I wouldn't find very troubling. Didn't vibe.

@@ClassicCase Does it not occur to you that someone who has been through the things Alex has been through would _learn_ to become 'anxious about every little thing'? (Even about a handshake or a hug...there are people who have sensory issues about being touched -- often arising either from trauma, or from natural neurodivergence -- and I therefore thought that it was very thoughtful of the developers to give the player the choice to avoid being hugged if they wished to.)

@@TreeHairedGingerAle doesn't really matter. The character needs to be relateable to you. Alex wasn't, not to me. If she was to you, fine. To me she was so over the top shy about everything it was just tedious.
And diversity in real life has nothing to do with diversity in a story. If your scene shows a shotgun hanging on a wall, at some point the shotgun has to be used. If you don't use it, don't place it there in the first place. One of the cardinal rules of writing.
If it doesn't play an integral part in the story, don't mention it.
