SMASHED SWEET POTATO RECIPE
Serves 8
*Print Recipe Here*: entertainingwithbeth.com/smas...
INGREDIENTS:
5 large sweet potatoes, cut lengthwise in half
1 Tbsp (15 ml) olive oil
Salt and pepper to taste
Pumpkin Pie Spice to taste (make your own here: bit.ly/2zPINCN)
4 Tbsp (56 g) butter
20 Fresh Sage leaves
1 ½ tsp (7.5 ml) orange zest
1 tsp (5 ml) maple syrup
METHOD:
1.) Preheat the oven to 400F (200C)
2.) Slice the sweet potatoes in half, lengthwise
3.) Drizzle each sweet potato half with a little bit of olive oil and season to taste with salt, pepper and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice
4.) Bake for 40 minutes or until fork tender. Spray a potato masher with olive oil, and gently press down on each potato half until flattened and "smashed". Set aside.
5.) Melt butter in the pan, add sage leaves, and fry in butter for a few minutes until crispy.
6.) Add the maple syrup and orange zest whisk to combine.
7.) Brush the butter on each sweet potato half, add 2 sage leaves to each half.
8.) Bake again at 350F for 10-15 minutes to set butter.
NOTE: You can make these ahead of time by mashing the sweet potatoes, then cover and refrigerate. Make the butter sauce, and bake at 350F for 20 minutes.

It's so beautifully made! And it looks great on you!
@@Lucinda_Jackson aww thx! Yes their quality is great!
Thank you for doing this well before thanksgiving! I don’t like when RUclipsrs post holiday foods videos a couple days before the actual holiday.
Very true!
Aww yes of course you have to have time to plan the menu! Ha! And then, of course, do the shopping!
You are such a wonderful hostess and entertainer Beth ! Loved the tip about small jobs you can give to people.
Ha! Right? It just lessens the stress and gives people things that they can actually help with without the pressure of messing something up!
I really agree with this tip! People do want to help! Like a friend of the family who always loves to carve! Does a beautiful job! Each guest has a talent they want to share!!
I made these for Christmas, and they were a huge hit! So delicious and "pure." No extra sugar or milk or (god forbid) marshmallows! They looked so beautiful on the buffet as well. A refreshing and permanent change to the regular menu. Thank you, you classy genius, you!
I was never a fan of sweet potatoes with marshmallows. This, however, looks delightful! Definitely going to give it a try :).
Oh yes! These are so yummy and dare I say even better than the marshmallow casserole ha!
Hi Beth, my cousin asked me to bring sweet potatoes and a green vegetable to Thanksgiving. I'd never actually made sweet potato casserole (marshmallows ick!) so I was intrigued by this and your unique brussels sprout salad idea. They were both phenomenal and SO EASY! I will not wait till next Thanksgiving to make them again!
I so appreciate your channel, cautions about what can go wrong (I wouldn't have thought to spray the masher with olive oil, for instance), and the simplicity/deliciousness ratio which you seem to strive for. Thanks for sharing your own wonderful family traditions and adding so much to our table 🙂
Thank you, Beth! This looks delicious ❤
Sounds amazing combination of all those ingredients. I’m sure it’s delicious!!!
Beth, you're the best. I just feel good when I watch your videos. I hope you have a joyous, wonderful Thanksgiving with your family.
Looks stunning, beth😊 perfect for entertaining!
Oh, they are so good! As delicious as they are pretty I hope you enjoy them!
This sounds absolutely scrumptious, Beth! I also love how easy it is. I adore sweet potatoes, but I'm not a huge fan of going the sweet route with them. I think I'll do this with cumin and garlic sprinkled on them and a chipotle butter! And maybe some cilantro for garnish. This has been a wonderful inspiration. Thank you for all you do!
P.S. As I was watching the video, I was thinking how lovely some chopped pecans would be with the maple and sage. The texture contrast would be amazing IMHO. 😀
This sounds terrific-- yum, chipotle butter. Thanks for sharing that idea.
Looks delicious and I plan on trying it first for myself and then for my family Thanksgiving. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, great idea! They are really good with some cinnamon chicken! It’s on my channel if you search cinnamon chicken! You don’t need to put it on the barbecue you can actually roast it in the oven with the same recipe. Hope you enjoy it!
Right up my alley, Beth!! 😋😋
Thank you again for sharing your acknowledge and recipe I really appreciate it❤❤
Of course! My pleasure! :)
Oh, my. This is right up my alley. I even love plain, baked sweet potatoes, so I know I would like these. My mother makes a delicious sweet potato casserole every year, with golden raisins! She does add marshmallows to it, but not a ton. Would it be too much to have her casserole & these potatoes?! We shall see. Thanks for sharing this!
I know funny enough, I’m thinking the same thing because my kids will kill me if I don’t break out the marshmallow casserole!! Ha! If you have a big group, I don’t think it’s too much
Oops! Just realized I never got back to thank you for this recipe! I love how adaptable it is. So easy to change the yield so it could be made for 1 or for a crowd! And I'm with your hubby - absolutely NO marshmallows! It goes against the laws of nature! 😂 A little sweetness and a little savory. Perfect!
This simple recipe will be on my Thanksgiving menu and on my menu every 1-2 months as a side for me. Yum!
Bet it's delicious Beth as it has so many fall flavors people love. I have to side with your husband about the marshmallow with sweet potato combo. Why gild the lily? Sweet and savory is super tasty. I'm going to give this recipe a try. Thanks for posting .
Ha! I know it’s true the sweet potatoes or sweet enough as they are! This is a more grown-up version of sweet potato side dish for Thanksgiving. Ha ha ha! My husband just does not understand the whole sweet and salty combos at Thanksgiving the French I guess don’t really do that and the other punchline I like to laugh about is how we serve a turkey with “confiture” or jam as the French say! I love the fact that they called a cranberry sauce jam!🤣💕👌 I hope one year to be in France around this time and be able to collect all the ingredients for a proper American Thanksgiving. I think that would really be fun to see how they would find all the dishes.
@@EntertainingWithBeth
That would be fun to see! Promise you'll film that! 😊
Cinnamon is a great substitute for pumpkin spice. A local honey is very delicious in place of maple syrup. I have 2 hives in my backyard and local honey smells like a field of flowers and has a wonderful flavor vs nationally bottled honey. I use a fork to smash the sweet potatoes which are a SUPER FOOD! So good to see you cook such a nutritious food! Your videos are wonderful🎉
Delicious 😋👍
D-E-L-I-S-H! On the list! Spray the masher? As always Beth adds a simple but terrific tip! Thank you Beth!
Aww so glad you enjoyed! These are soooo yummy!!
Hello Beth Everything is Amazing As Always Sweet Potatoes Look Delicious 🥰😊💯👍🏼
Oh, they’re so good and easy! I hope you enjoy them!
It looks delicious and easy. I absolutely love your top Beth❤
Aww thanks! It's from Sezane (one of my new favorite French clothing brands! I've been working with them as one of their lifestyle influencers, I get a small commission from anything sold.) It comes in a bunch of cute colors too! Here's the link! Enjoy! seza.ne/QPS5JkSZW6
Great advice for having a jobs list for guests. ❤️
Love this recipe and can't wait to try it! I have a sweet potato in my frig right now and will try it this week. Just have to get the sage.
Oh yes don't skip the sage, it's soooo yummy together! :) Hope you enjoy!!
Hey Beth!! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. I will be bringing this recipe as a guest to the Thanksgiving table, plus the wine. As far as I'm concerned, this recipe hits every mark for a perfect side dish for Thanksgiving Everything that is warm, cozy, and what the fall season is in a single dish. Pure perfection.
Lovely pretty side, even for we who live elsewhere & miss all these lovely American Autumn celebrations 😊
Aww yes hopefully one day you can experience it. It's such a delicious time of year! But you can recreate all the recipes for a lovely "taste of America" :) Ha!
Our Canadian Thanksgiving was in early October, but I will definitely be making these soon. We love sweet potatoes and sprinkle them with cinnamon, but I've only used the butter & maple syrup on squash! Love the orange zest addition, and will try it soon on roasted sweet potatoes. Delish! ~~M~~
Really good with a Sunday roast chicken too! Hope you enjoy them! :)
I love your idea …thanks !!
Going to add this to my holiday menu. Thanks again, Beth!
Looks delish! 👍
I’ll make this dish for thanksgiving. Thank you for the ideal ❤❤!!
I missed this recipe for Thanksgiving-but I think it’s absolutely perfect for a week night dinner that you want to elevate to something decadent … say, after a trying day at work or as a celebration . Why not? These look too good to eat only once a year! Thank you!
Ha! Yes totally agree! I serve them with my roast chicken and they are delicious! I hope you enjoy! :)
I can't wait to make these! Delish!
Magnifique comme toujours Beth 😊...
Aww Je suis content que vous l'aimez! :)
This looks so delicious and special
I am English and cannot get my head around the marshmallows either . Happy Thanksgiving to you all 🍁🍂
Love Beth
Awesome thanks ❣️
Beth, your sweet potato recipes look absolutely gorgeous. I sent you lots of Thanksgiving wishes, cutie.
Thank you! You too!
Looks like a winner
What a great combination of flavors!
So good! Hope you enjoy!!
Beth, I need your yearly thanksgiving game plan.
So pretty making this one for sure!!! Never understood the whole marshmallow thing😮
Ha! You must be part French! LOL! Because they don't either ha!!
This looks and sounds wonderful!! Must try!
It's so good! Hope you enjoy it!!
Looks great! Actually the marshmallow/sweet potatoe casserole came from the English/Irish side of the family! My mother(the Italian side) did candied Yams! With maple syrup and orange zest!
Thank you for sharing looks good going to make it Happy Thanksgiving
I hope you enjoy them as much as we do! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family as well!
Very nice presentation
This looks amazing, making this for dinner tonight, no marshmallows, not a fan. Lol, really horrify your husband with ambrosia salad and fluffanutter sandwiches. 😂
LOL! Oh he would totally die over those LOL! :)
Aha! Mystery solved!
I always wondered why my Mother seemed to hide a grimace when I asked to help her in the kitchen on big showtime holiday meals.
From her POV I’ve given her extra work in exchange for honestly nothing!
Now maybe I’ll just bring a good dish and leave her be.
Family therapy and what look to be astounding sweet potatoes - top!
Mega applause! I am so making this, but am planning to veganize it. If you have any suggestions on the type of vegan butter, please share, but don't go to any trouble, please
Love the recipe! I am going to try it out for my family Thanksgiving dinner. I bought rosemary by mistake instead of sage; can I use rosemary too!
Yes you can! Rosemary would be great too!
❤❤❤
A marshmallow company invented the sweet potato recipe to sell marshmallows so it is weird. It's all about sales not cuisine. I prefer recipes like this without marshmallows. Looks delicious.
There’s no way I would ruin those beautiful sweet potatoes with marshmallows 😅
Ha!! I know they are beautiful aren’t they?! especially with a Sage and the glistening butter!
sweet potato>>>>>>>baked potato I WILL STAND BY MY TESTIMONY.
Ha! So good, right!?
I’m english and I agree with your husband, marshmallows with sweet potato, nah😮
Ha! I know it’s this strange American custom that I think you have to grow up to fully appreciate ha ha ha!
looks great. would love it if in future you would provide some inspiration for travel-friendly recipes. I always have to drive about 1.5 hours to get to the family Tday event...
