That is darned good advice to mix the small volume of seed with sand. I had not thought of that. I’m in the USA, but I think that’ll work here too! Ha!
Absolutely fantastic video keeping it simple is great. I spend a lot of time creating wild flower meadows for customers and I’m looking at grazing techniques for larger areas using geese. Keep up the great work. Best Wishes Simon
Very helpful thank you. I'd like to do something like this in my garden, and soon because it's Autumn. Can anyone please confirm if I need to make a trench/edge first before creating a wildflower border/patch??
I've seen two different techniques for wildflower seeds. Some say to scatter over the ground and leave to germinate becuase they need sunlight and some say to cover them lightly. I wonder which technique produces the best results.
this is my dream i had large back yard , i have dream my yard had various of flower i love lavender and sunflower, dandelion, and rose, lily and etc. i lived in asia the structure of soil easy to get water so i don't need to worry about water, but ihad no time cause i engineering student don't have anytime to make that real, but i believed i can make it real
They've sown by nature in a patch after leaving wild flower die and seed naturally. One week or two later, flowers in my longer grass, just starting in summer by accident.
I feel ashamed to ask this as I have no idea but here go's, will they grow year after year? I know people will think it's a stupid question but I have received a pouch of meadow seeds from friends of the earth and I would really like to sow them this weekend or is it to late now?
You should not feel ashamed to ask questions. We only know what we have experiences with. You can never stop learning. Its good to ask questions and learn new things. Does it say on the packet what types of plants? For example Butter Cups, Clover, Poppies etc? If they are all genuine Uk plants then they should be able to Naturalize. Some are Anuals which only live for one year but will set seed for next year. Some will be Bi anuals which means they will start growing this year, but flower next year set seed and die. Then Perennials which will flower ever year from the year they start flowering. Good luck with your seeds :)
Many UK wildflowers are annuals which is one of the reasons they often disappear as a result of modern agriculture. Oxeye daisies will come back along with some of the campions and knapweed, but poppies (cornfield flowers really) are annuals and require fresh seed. Frustratingly, some like bladder campion can be annual, biennial or perennial, so it's a matter of luck!
The point is to remove the two or three dominant wild plants (weeds) so you can have a more diverse selection of wildplants in that spot. The dominant weeds are often not native or originally prevalent, just there because they readily grow in areas that have been disturbed by humans (eg yards and roadsides).
I just walk around dropping seeds randomly and end up with loads of flowers (though we do have a team who comes over and weeds our lawn and fertilizes the yard like every other week.)
Why are these seeds so expensive. I looked at a packet similar to the one in this video at our local garden centre and they were asking £20. I don't know about "Sow a wildflower meadow" more like "Sow a wildflower window box".
@@mellevettful Thanks for the info about eBay. I duly looked and ordered a couple of packets. Sadly they turned out to be Budgerigar seeds the exact same as Millet seed. Don't think I will be ordering from eBay for a while.
Dandelions are wonderful but the problem is that they may outcompete the variety of more delicate wildlflowers she is trying to plant. Aside from garden aesthetics, bees and wildlife need a diverse array of wildflowers.
My garden is full of nettles, thistles and every other weed going, can I use weed killer to clear it all before planting wild flower seed,.. Serious question
Her enthusiasm is contagious thank You so very much!!
I wanna see an after picture! Great video, thanks for sharing.
Me too Leah.
Great to spread the message about having more natural planting in our gardens for wildlife.
Adding bit of sand to the seeds to help see where you are sowing is an amazing idea....great video
Nice video Hannah, I was looking at turning part of my lawn into a wild flower area and was looking for ideas and tips, thanks
there is nothing more enchanting than an English gardener

Never had wild flowers in my garden but definitley going to do my bit for the bees, also going to buy all the family some seeds and spread the word.

Great video I've just sowed some my self
Going to try planting wild flowers on my garage roof for the bees. Going to use compost? And recycled pots
Beautiful !!! 🌸🌸🌸
Thank you so much for sharing this with me

Hi... Fantastic... Can I sow the wildflower seeds in the autumn or shall I wait until spring... Thank you
Hi!
Can you plant these in the shade?
I tend to think happy thoughts when I sow my seed as well
pervert
Careful, some people may want to pull out the wild flowers
Happy to sow my wild seeds with her
What is the tall green hedge to your right?
I love that.

Can this be done in large pot's or raised beds instead of the ground?
U didn’t state what time of year? Or can you do this all throughout summer?
Make sure that you remove all the wild flowers so there is less competition for your wild flowers ?
john caley Lol
john caley She means that some flowers carry guns and are wild.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🔫🔫🔫🔫🔫🔫🔫🔫🍀🍁🌺🌻🌼🌼🌻🌼🌼🌻⛅🌻
i think she means remove the lawn grass and nettles etc. In addition to being competition, they might also add too many nutrients to the soil.
The point is to remove the two or three dominant wild plants (weeds) so you can have a more diverse selection of wildplants in that spot. The dominant weeds are often not native or originally prevalent, just there because they readily grow in areas that have been disturbed by humans (eg yards and roadsides).
Might seem like a silly question but can I start to sow seeds now (in June?) Or does it have to be spring time xxxx
March/May is best.
What time of year should I do this?
Cool

Can you just scatter them over grass? Or do they need soil over them too?
Wow are t you fancy
1:01 it’s so peaceful oh wait English road rage
LOL
Haha
When is best time to see seed

I like pastry lol

rubbish anyone that removes a dandilion as a weed needs a re-think of what is a wildflower meadow
Very true. I wonder what she would have done if the seen packet had included dandelion seeds as wildflowers? Hmmm.

Getting dungarees, they're perfect for not scratching legs.
Me💐too 💜
but what about the snails that come at night and eat everything that is sprouting?

Nettles and thistles are attractive to wildlife
@@georgealderson4424
Yeah they are but they're not very attractive to me
@@BillSikes. Haha.
how to you protect the seeds from the birds!!
Get a cat!
The less fertile the ground the better. This slows down the growth of grasses and more invasive weeds that will dominate.
She sounds exactly like Dobby from Peep Show
this woman is very good looking x
If you buy cheerios breakfast cereal in the UK you can claim I free wild flowers seed pack
Disappointing there are no photos of it in bloom, show us how well the seeds wk.
That's decidedlt *not* a spade.
Awesome tho! Perennial mixes are hard to master without advice first!
Tea and wild crumpets anyone?
Nice
