Athiesm is not a religion but it is by definition a beleif system. Athiests of course are individuals and can have any number of other beleifs but thats literally the same of religions as well. Refusing to "pick a side" is still making a choice. It's just how the words definition works. I'm not saying that to bolster or defame atheism, it is just true. We have no way to tell for sure that there is a God but in the same way we don't know for sure there isn't one. Believing there is no God definitely is the same as believing there is one definitely. It isn't a lack of belief it is a positive belief in the absence of a God or Gods. Agnostic better describes one who simply lacks a belief.
