My introduction to Ocarina of time was in 2000. I was 8 years old and my next door neighbor had it. I watched him play for 5 minutes and knew just how epic this game really was.
I convinced him to let me borrow it in exchange for my blue Tony Hawk game. I sprinted home like I just commited a crime. I popped the game in and the majestical music played.
I was collecting rupees for the shield and searching for the kokiri sword to get past that gatekeeper. I saw the Great Deku Tree.
As i entered, my mom came in "Tyler wants his game back" I started crying and my tears started filling the ocean. The next day I came back from school and saw a new copy in my room.
    Thanks mom

Put very simply , in the world of gaming there is a “before ocarina” and an “after ocarina”. It is to this day a perfect testament to what a video game is and what a game can accomplish. It is the primary bedrock of ALL 3d games even now….And it was released in fucking 1998……an absolutely astounding achievement

Its impact really can't be understated. So many modern 3D RPGs cite OoT and Majoras as major influences. Hell, even when debating best Zelda game most people (besides edgy contrarians) will acknowledge it's top tier even if it's not their personal favorite. Crazy how influential the N64 run of Nintendo games was on gaming

Like the Wild games are saying Zelda can barely hold back Ganon any further and Zelda is missing, yet you know spend hundreds of hours. Meanwhile in Ocarina of Ganon has either not done anything yet or the world has already been ruined by him, so link just doing things doesnt feel out of place because he you feel like you are doing what he would do.

if only they could feel the joy I did before even turning on the console. I've read that manual like a captivating novel. I guess it's boring nowadays but even reading about the different types of sword attacks... and then turning the page and manual says your can upgrade your sword with magic. Waaaat? "of Time" was just a title but reading about what that means... but I think that part is even better when you don't have any spoilers about it.

leaving a comment for the algorithm, since i really liked this video.
i played ocarina of time for the first time less than half a decade ago in high school. i hadn’t played any games released before, like, the wii era. getting used to the graphics was odd, but they were also instantly really charming. the music was not the kind i heard a lot in games with its instrument samples instead of live recordings, but it felt so PERFECT.
i blazed through the game in around a month, including the time i spent getting all the heart pieces and gold skulltulas (i don’t normally get all the collectibles in games, but i could not put it down).
the story was beautiful as well. i can’t say anything that hasn’t already been said, but it just really resonated with me. leaving the temple of time after getting the master sword and seeing what was once such a charming, hopeful hyrule completely destroyed made me care about “saving the world” more than any game ever had.
when i reached the end screen, i was hit with… a lot. i felt pride over saving hyrule. i felt awful about everything link had to go through before being forced to just go back and live out his childhood traumatized. i was sad it was over, but also really glad i’d decided to play this 20-year-old game that i could just as easily have never considered.
i eventually picked up majora’s mask, although i was convinced it wouldn’t beat the experience of its predecessor. i blazed through it in a similar amount of time, and the similar themes of loss, trauma, and growing up resonated with me as well, although there were a lot of differences. in the end, i can’t say which i preferred; they were such different experiences, but they both completely changed my life. (i am leaning towards majora, but seriously, it’s close. and i wouldn’t have played it without oot!)
playing ocarina of time was probably one of the best decisions of my life. it feels somewhat like a rite of passage, and i wish more people my age would experience it. the game’s a damn masterpiece. i don’t have much more to say. i don’t think anyone’s going to read this, but… thanks, nintendo. not bad.

People tend to say Wind Waker ages well, and cartoonish styles ages better than "realism". I find that to be bullcrap. What ages well is stylization. The problem with games aging poorly is not "realism", i'ts always a factor like biting off more than they can chew WHILE going for realism. Twilight Princess ages poorly because it has such obvious limitations. A lot of the modeling is like puppetry, lips don't move, eyes move very little, it ages as well as Goldeneye 64. How close or far from real it is, is not the factor here.
And on cartoonish styles, this would be represented by Banjo-Kazooie. It does NOT benefit from the cartoonish style, if anything, it's painfully obvious how those clean, rounded edges could NOT reach the amount of polygons that the art style calls for. On the other end of things, Super Mario 64 is more evocative. It does things like use a still PNG for the eye neemy where the 3D pupil only surrounds the more or less perfect sphere, and THAT ages well. Of course, aliasing is still awful in any N64 game so it's not quite ready to have any lasting 3d graphics, but the artfulness of the design is still there.
Wind Waker has the same problem, its style is very charming but the cartoon textures like face features call for close to perfect vectoring, and the aliasing simply does stand out. It's a game that can be CONVERTED easily into HD, but just running on Gamecube I wouldn't say it holds up. Give me Melee plastic dudes or Toy Story 1 any day.

Agreed. Majoras is a VERY close second for me, to the point where sometimes it beats OoT depending on my mood, but considering how perfectly OoT encapsulates what it means to be a Zelda game it normally wins. That said, I've been replaying Windwaker on stream for the first time in a LONG time, and it's giving both titles a run for their money. I forgot how much of a vibe that game is. Might be my personal favorite OST of any Zelda

  • @VGInterviews
    @VGInterviews 7 дней назад

For me I think the reason I love it so much is because this is the game where you feel that you ARE Link the most
As you said the world gets revealed to you at the same time it is revealed to Link
The relationships you start building as a kid carry on into your adulthood as people you met still remember you, you see the people and environments you met and formed a bond with during your childhood get distorted and altered by Ganondorf's evil reign during the adult era, and thus you are motivated to help them, it's not just the classic "please save our village Elder and he will give you the magic thing" no, it is please save Darunia/Saria/Ruto, you know and bonded with these characters and helping them is done both for selfless as for personal reasons, the world evolves around you and is shaped by your actions, unlike something like BoTW where you only wake up to the aftermath of the conflict and people have to remind you you actually supposedly care about them
Other things are small details that help Link's character stand out, one of my FAVOURITE details in this game is seen at the very start, the drawing/carving seen on the outside of your tree house tells you qho exactly Link is and what are his aspirations, he truly wishes to be part of an epic adventure defeating legendary creatures but the drawing also reminds us that you are still a child, with a full future ahead an a potential ready to be unleashed
When the Deku tree talks to you before dying, how Link is shown standing at the start of the story but by the end he is seen sitting on the grass still listening, he is not a robot npc, he is a full character absorbing his surroundings
His farewell to Saria after she gives you her Ocarina, not knowing how to respond
His outcast status with the Kokiri subtly reinforced by how he may look like them but there's some small differences like how his hair is a completely different color from normal Kokiri, how they are much thinner than him, even how they all wear their green fairytale style shoes while Link wears much more humanlike leather boots
Honestly the first 10 minutes of this game are so perfect, and that's without counting the wonderfully melancholic yet hopeful vibes of the intro

I started my first ever play through of Ocarina of Time about 2 years ago. I picked it up on and off on the switch emulator, (which isnt the best way to play it imo) I didn’t play it on and off because it didnt click with me or something, it certainly did and I loved it despite being not the best way to play. But I’m playing the 3D version right now, and told myself I’m playing this game. I think im halfway through and I’m genuinely convinced it will probably be one of, if not my favorite game ever and I see myself playing it time and time again. Souls games are my favorites too and it’s been so hard to find a game I enjoy because they don’t really compare, jaded in a way. But OoT, good lord I can’t put it down. It has some of the best story, themes, mechanics, puzzles, dungeons, NPCs, soundtracks and side quests I’ve seen in a game PERIOD. I’m really convinced it’s going to be my favorite game. I can’t wait to get to Majora’s Mask, since I’ve heard people say it’s just as good.

You are %100 correct but stop worrying THAT much about what others think, it's nice to be considerate, I get it but don't be too hard on yourself. You don't actually play those instruments do you? Lol that was good and OoT music IS epic no question

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! My favorite part of Ocarina of time is when Zelda takes his ocarina and says “it’s ocarinain’ time!” then proceeds to legend all over the bad guys. Truly one of the video game moments of all time

I love OOT, it holds a special place in my heart. It was my introduction to the Zelda series. Majora’s Mask is my personal favorite, but OOT is there right below it with Wind Waker. I love TP too, but it doesn’t beat MM, OOT, or WW

I think nintendo should make the next 3d zelda game have tools like older zeldas but also offer the open world with multiple ways to complete the dungeons depending on the tools you have collected not like the 2d one where you can borrow them make it where it can be super hard with no tools or really easy pending on what order you go in and they definitely need to offer more then 4 main dungeons they need multiple and not tiny shrines

i wouldve liked this game as much as you but the first time i went to the castle the two guards were gatekeeping zeldas room and i couldnt enter for anything. i kept coming back and they never left and everytime i leave and do something else and i come back and there still there then i went to the sheika slate thing (i was playing 3ds) and it told me nothing about how to get passed that and navi kept sayjng go to the castle then after two days (real days) of exploring i searched up what to do next on youtube it tells me i just had to wait till daytime so i was pissed off with this game for that but as of now im at the zora domain part of the game

You know Breath of the Wild fans are having the nostalgia bias towards Tears of the Kingdom that Ocarina of Time fans had towards Breath of the Wild (plot holes, lore, gameplay etc.) I understand now that all these games are great in different ways and I’m grateful to have been able to experience them. Also history does repeat itself.

    • @aswordbear

@@RetroGoosen-ux8ty totally agree especially with the second part. I could make a video like this for every 3D Zelda and they’d all be valid. They’re just that good of games

my favourite zelda is majoras mask but i never being able to finished ever again meanwile ocarina i finished like 3 times, it really is an amazing game. Also breath of the wild and totk are not zelda games, they are great adventure games but not zelda.

    • @aswordbear

Majoras needs space between playthroughs imo but it's probably the most creative and artistic Zelda game. I always say that BotW and TotK are 10/10 games, but only 6/10 *Zelda* games. I wish they'd just branded them as spinoffs so they could stand on their own
