    The MVP Topsider is better than most of the clear plastic extractors, I have BOTH Types.
    The plastic ones get brittle and crack, also the hoses used are semi-hard and also crack, and occasionally break off inside your dipstick (a real PIA when it happens).
    The clear flexible hoses on the TOPSIDER are much better and easier to use. They provide sufficient clairity so you can tell if the unit is still drawing out fluid. Once you near the bottom you will hear the gurgling from the topsider tank signaling you are finished. No need to see the tank filling - the steel topsider tank is much stronger than the plastic types. It also makes draining Transmission Fluid very easy, you will not be able to secure a tall plastic tank under your hood very well if at all. The Topsider sits atop the engine nicely, and can access any fluid with ease.
    Hope this helps.

So to avoid a whole new oil pan I researched which extractor had the best reviews which was this one, and have never looked back! Even on my 2008 Titan with a perfectly fine drain plug I used the Topsider.... I honestly do not believe he drove that car up on ramps..nobody would run a car with no oil!! I haven't, although I would probably still change the oil every 5k for peace of mind. Driving style and conditions change between every oil change and it wouldn't make sense to get the oil analyzed each time, which is both cost prohibitive and wouldn't really change the service interval.

    • @ericmichel3857
      @ericmichel3857 5 лет назад +1

      While it certainly isn't something anyone would recommend doing, if it was only for a few seconds at low speed the effect should be minimal. I mean the same thing happens every time you start your car because it takes 2-3 seconds for the oil pressure to come up. They say that the majority of engine wear occurs during engine startup. This is also why a low mileage car that is never driven far could actually be in worse condition than a high mileage car that has a lot of highway miles.
      This is also another reason that many do not like those engine start/stop features they seem to be putting on many new cars. Not to mention all the added wear on your starter motor, all just to maybe gain .2 MPG.
      So by doing that you probably added a one or two months worth of wear in 30 seconds. So not horrible, but also not something I would advise repeating.

    Not a good test. Since you drove the car up on ramps, you changed the angle of the vehicle and oil pan. The car must be in the same position for both methods. Next time, drive the car on the ramps, use the extractor, then drain from the plug. Regarding your question on running the engine with no oil, your car idles just under 1,000 RPM (revolutions per minute). By the time you started the car, revved it a bit to get up the ramps and shut it down, you probably ran the engine about 2,000-3,000 revolutions without oil. Not a good practice.

      That's a ridiculous statement. People act like there's sediment and sand all swirling around in your oil that settles to the bottom. Whatever microscopic solids weren't caught by the filter are distributed among the entirety of the oil in the engine, assuming you ran it for a few minutes before changing it (as you should, because changing the oil cold is for communists).

    • @admiralackbar6721

      Contaminants are heavier than oil, thus sinking and settling on the bottom of the pan

    • @zed4me
      @zed4me  5 лет назад +2

      @@admiralackbar6721 so then why not just remove the drain plug and drain only a little bit for each oil change? The reasoning is flawed. It takes a long time to settle if the particles are small. If they're big they'll never get picked up in which case it wouldn't even hurt the engine. And if its picked up, it gets filtered out before reaching the engine anyway. For all intents and purposes, there is no different amount of "contaminant" in this last 3% of oil.

    • @admiralackbar6721
      @admiralackbar6721 5 лет назад

      When you remove the drain plug almost all of the oil is drained, with it any oil contaminants. The fluid extraction method leaves the a small amount of oil, the lowest amount which is where all of the contaminants have settled (since they are heavier than oil).
      I'd be willing to bet you have never actually removed an oil pan so you'd be unaware of the kind of deposits left behind.
      However, i do find it funny to be critized for "flawed reasoning" by a guy who just ran his motor dry.
      While you'd disagree, it's a good thing you drained the rest of the remaining oil after the starvation. You wouldn't want any of that bearing material you just shaved off to hamper any bearing life that you may have left.

    For anyone wondering the Topsider is garbage. I had one a few years ago and it never worked well or at all. The seals were defective and the company refused to help. There are plenty on eBay that are all the same plastic 6.5L design as ECS's Schwaben brand, or the Pela/MityVac design. I own the Schwaben one, which is clone of Pela/MityVac, and it's been great.
    Ensure you warm you oil to operating temp, around 130º on your oil temp gauge in the multi-function display on your dash. It will extract everything in around 5 min with very light extra pumping.

    • @zed4me
      @zed4me  5 лет назад

      Agreed. It's been under freezing and the topsider seals are terrible. I had to run the pump under some hot water and open it up and recondition the seals for it to work properly. That's why it took so long too because the oil by that time was not really warm at all anymore. Usually when I use it and the oil is warm, it extracts it pretty quickly, but this time in the cold weather the topsider really didn't work as well as it usually does.
