Chris, I never would have imagined in a thousand years someone would analyse the unconventional vocals on Frusciante's early albums! Wonderful, fascinating, and as always, inspiring! I look forward to the rest of this series!
Unconventional, yeah but it's mostly just recordings of a heroin addict that's incredibly talented on guitar that were made when he was really really REALLY high lol!
@@Douglas_I yes, the clips of him from the time are genuinely horrifying. by the end of his addiction he needed jaw reconstruction. anthony keidis paid for all of the surgery he needed as well as his rehab.
@@beauchambers3912 I went way further down that today than I like to admit myself. Luckily I did it at a time when the drug was cleaner and didn't have any severe effects. I'm just passed 3.5 years sober now. I really hope John is on the same track as me and neither of us ever go back to that very dark place. I have played guitar for about 12 years, with a break in the middle where I was focused on my addiction. John is a huge inspiration to me!
Starting with Niadra LaDes? That's a bold move. Respect! I remember 20 years ago taking this to my college music prof because he seemed stuck up about "art music" vs "pop music" and talked about what he thought true expression was. I picked the most oddball tracks on it and at one point he laughed and I'm like, what? Too out there for you? He says, no, I really like it. I lost that battle...
You just earned a spot in every fru fanboy/girl's heart. Nianrda lades is such an interesting piece of art, completely depicts John's life and struggles in that era, while maintaining that quirky and interesting vibe through the voice tone, the guitar, the lyrics, the production etc. Thank you for this video, great work, and really looking forward for the backing vocals video.
I love Frusciante's solo music. I recommend checking out the albums: Shadows Collide With People; Curtains and The Will to Death for a more refined sound.
I discovered Frusciante in the beginning of the year and have been lost in his music since then. Almost listened to nothing else for half a year. I also love "The Empyrean", but besides that your picks are my favorites as well, "Shadows" being in the leading position.
I saw RHCP in 2003. It was in a stadium in Costa Rica. The mix was weird where I was sitting, so I could hear Frusciante's backing vocals better than Kiedis's. It was actually really interesting to get to hear his parts so well. He was really fantastic. Certainly a lot more careful with pitch than he is here. Now that I know you're open to extremely out-there music, I'm sure I'll have plenty of weirdo suggestions for you in the future. I can't help but think that Frusciante was a hidden influence on the "freak folk" movement that was popular on college radio when I was in college. Artists like Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom employed some similar unconventional vocals, stripped down arrangements, and lo-fi aesthetics.
First Record i can remember to listen to was Wet Sand by RHCP. Took me a while to realize that it's JF who made me cry every fuckn time. 3 years later now, i recovered from depression, anxiety and borderline symptoms. There were many things that promoted my healing process but one of the most important things was the realization, that Johns vibe - and the music of many other people- brings my soul to resonate in such painful areas, that i was not able to endure it and bursted into tears. Nowadays; i'm learning guitar, i've joined a choir and i started to work on my dream as a musictherapist. And i can almost sing through the whole song. Cause its not the Tension that resonates within us, its the release. Thank you so much Chris, for all the hours of exercises you provide. I've never been able to pay for any Lessons, so RUclips and Channel like yours have always been my only option. Music is Love and for me, its the inharent Will of Nature to share it.
The reason I love this channel is because of Chris' relatable personality, I feel like I could sit around and have a few beers and make ridiculous sounds and geek out over music. Much less like a teacher and more like a friend that teaches you. It's so digestable.
Chris, please analyze Frusciante's album "The Empyrean" and his song Carvel. It's a beautiful realm of music and singing! You are going to be impressed. Like this comment to help Chris see it
Amazing content, man! Any song from "the empyrean" would show way more trained and polished vocals from Frusciante tho... And it's an amazing album overall
So awesome you focused on this album! Definitely one of his most raw solo releases. His vocals have changed so much through the years, it blows my mind.
Omg, this is perfect. Last week on my lunch break I sat and watched your Corey Taylor left behind breakdown, one of my favourite vocal performances ever. Now, on another lunch break, I find you analysing my favourite musician of all time. The stars have truly aligned
Vocals in "my smile..." and "running away..." were altered with tape speed on a 4-track and analog delay. Frusciante mastered those tape speed and reverse techniques to some irrational level. Reverse guitar in Untitled #2 from usually just a tshirt is mindblowing. Also "Mascara" is a great example of how two different vocal tracks on top of each other can actually sound good in a song :) Good job Chris!
Thank you for doing this and starting with Niandra was such a great choice, respect :) Hope there will be more Frusciante videos, his solo discography is incredible and full of amazing ideas of how voice can be used

The song “time tonight” of the curtains album is my favourite one. John vocals on that song are so beautiful and it would be amazing if you can make a video talking about this song.
one of the best parts of Frusciante's discografy is his "combined" track. take "one more of me" and "enough of me" from the empyrean for example, they're meant to be combined afterwards while having "central" (the main song of the album) in beetwen. on the same album, we have dark/light with two beatifully distinct parts that mix together into a great song. and for one of my favorites we have the alternative vocals for "of before", where he uses a totally diferent singing style that you should definitely look into!

The effect used on his voice on 'Running Away Into You' is a Digitech PDS 1002 delay/sampler pedal. You can use it as a regular delay/echo effect, but it also has a secondary switch which will hold the last sampled sound infinitely (but without going into crazy feedback like a regular delay - it's literally just repeating the sample over and over) From there you can manipulate the 'delay time' control to speed up/slow down the loop. Because of the way the pedal works, the pitch & speed always change together. It's an amazing effect. Thanks again for the fascinating video!

Ive got two oddball suggestions that may be interesting to look at: 1.
