Let us learn from one of most diverse and masterful singers in Rock Music today! Maynard's ability to deliver haunting yet somehow soothing melodies while in the very next line, getting right in your face with a fantastic rage fits perfectly with both of the bands he's fronted! I'm excited for you to join me as we unpack his tone, his dynamics, and his vocal tendencies as we dissect several small passages from some of Tool's and APC's greatest moments!
Dude you get me hyped... I've always loved Maynards voice and you break it down so well. You've given me a deeper appreciation for vocals and how it's such an art. Layers, so many layers. It's not just about hitting the notes. Thanks man.
I guess I'm pretty off topic but do anyone know a good place to stream new movies online?
@Holden Kamden flixportal :)
@Spencer Khalid Thanks, I signed up and it seems like a nice service :) I really appreciate it!
@Holden Kamden glad I could help :D
@Phase Zerosum hey man, I have two ACOUSTIC TOOL covers live on camera "VICARIOUS" and "THE GRUDGE" where I play the bass and guitar at the same time while singing it.... check my channel for it, i'd love to know what you think of them. VICARIOUS especially already has 170,000 hits or so. haha and I didn't even know I was being filmed.. It was a test run.
i think what makes Maynards voice so captivating is how he ebbs and flows between a vaguely feminine and vulnerable state to burst forward into an overtly masculine and bitter primal roar. so it ignites something in us that is unconsciously understood.
🎯
I've heard that Tool is the masculine and A Perfect Circle is the feminine parts of the ☯️ of his music.
It's the choirboy in him!
Puscifer is the sexuality.
Reminds me of pushit and H.
MJK has a desperation in his voice most people Can't replicate.
Most people didn’t watch their mother hold their faith to God while suffering and paralyzed for over 27 years. That changes a man like nothing could I imagine.
@@tetsusiega2 stop
Damian you’re right, Maynard’s the only one who’s suffered through immense tragedy in his life.

His voice has been ringing in my head like a mantra every morning for past 4 years. Parabola anyone ?
4? Good 20 years for me...
@@chriso6974 you jammy man
@@jackwayne8809 oh, thanks a lot my dear
Yup, we can make a religion out of this.
Oh, wait...
What I noticed in Maynard's style, be it a habit or a unique niche, is right before a verse he does a type of humn or moan and then use that as a type of harmonising trick for the verse which he sings after
@G.L yea it is so awesome
u mean "it's getting colder" ....?
@G.L Disposition
thank you so much for mentioning it, i've recognized this too and i have never seen anyone talk about it! i like these "m"s he puts in. makes it all so natural and organic and connected
Kinda like in the verses to Stinkfist
But you've gotta teach the moves and the weirdness, too
haha... that's the magic right??
One episode wouldn't have sufficed, probably
There's a word for that. It's called Maynardness.
That’s the drug and the Thelema bullshit. I’d just stick to singing for your sanity’s sake.
Good Luck
Yes! I love the way you explain Maynard's lower and higher vocals. I think when most people think of Maynard's vocals they think of that incredible scream he can do, but there is so much more to his voice! The emotion he creates in his lower range is so moving! Which I would argue that the most important thing about a vocalist is their ability to create the emotion that they want you to feel. Great video!
I'm not even a singer, but it was so cool to watch you break down MJK's style like that. I'm sure I'll start to pay attention to some new (to me) nuances of his voice from now on. Specially because I simply can't stop listening to Fear Inoculum since it came out, it's almost disturbing. Definitely will be checking more of your work here, cheers from Brazil!
"Pitch, break-up, and fallout"
Describe your love life in 3 words.
Step one: Be bald.
And wear wigs, like some dreads, or a mohawk. Early Maynard's mohawk/mullet hybrid thing was the best.
or if you have long hair make yourself some dreads
Lolol
Bald and proud!
Would be great to see what you thin about the Fear Inoculum, especially the vocal part starting from 6:24 till 7:00. Such an amazing trick at the end. I think it’s done programmatically but it’s genius
6:04 This scream merits to be recorded and used in videos and games xD
ha agreed!
The new wilhelm scream
😂😂😂
It is also worth noting that Maynard is an actor. He knows how to put emotion in his performances to the point where it feels like he truly believes the words he's singing.
Yes!
He doesnt act. Thats him. It's not fake
“What’ll it take to get through to you precious” is the actual lyric in The Outsider.
Best part of that scream is that he holds it for 24 seconds. He's got some crazy air control
RIGHT???!!!??!!!??!!!
Chris's vocal analysis is second to none. It still amazes me how how spots/captures subtleties then breaks them down into details and translates them for us.
Maynard truly emotes his lyrics, he very much acts out each song and word. I love how you break it down, I can't sing or play an instrument, but I am great at listening.
If we're talking unique voices, Chino Moreno must be somewhere on the list!
smolus0512 f2l oll pll
The Mars Volta. Those vocal ranges go all over.
In a he can't actually sing kind of a way.
Chino’s voice is amazing.
Chino's voice is beyond incredible. Smooth...sensual...sexual...and super aggressive when need be. But all with really idiosyncratic melodies. He's just brilliant...
The thing that's always fascinated me is his ability to control his voice all while keeping up his bizarre stage presence, bending and contracting and twitching and contorting his body.
Prolly helps
acid
Definitely believe that helps. Even as I am trying to record vocals atm I notice moving in a certain way while singing compresses the diaphragm in ways that allow you to hold or express the air differently than if you were standing mostly upright the whole way through
Oh man I love Maynard’s voice. On that note I would love a future video for chino moreno since those two did an amazing collaboration for the track “passenger” ❤️
PS. I totally get you on the intuitive approach to letting your voice almost walk itself through a phrase or riff. It’s only something I can access at certain times when I’m mentally and physically focused yet relaxed and receptive
Passenger is so good, the reason I started listening to Deftones.
You can do a whole breakdown on their song “the pot”!
bald and proud 18:23
I nose exhaled
Bald pride!!!
I see Chris, I see Tool, I like it.
Man, i really like your teaching style. You make it fun working on your singing voice.
Glad you enjoy it!
Maynard is a genius cause he doesn't just sing, he act the songs and makes you feel the emotions with his voice. He's not just a singer, he's more than that and is why you can't forget his voice ones you hear him.
So true!
Bro you are extremely impressive. I really like the confidence you have when dialing in on the vocals. I think that's why i have problems with vocals. I think i look and sound goofy, but man you just have that "whatever I'm going to do whatever it takes cause i know I'm going to inevitably nail it" outlook. Very cool stuff!
This man figured out the secret that only Maynard knows... Chris you're a legend keep up the great content!
Pete Loeffler from Chevelle? super underrated.
Agreed! Also sounds a wee bit like Maynard in some instances... I'm sure there's some influence there...
Chevelle is getting more popular now
You are dead on bro with this video. He’s one of favorite singers
At 10:46. I call it The Maynard shiver. Love it. Great impact.
MJK is one of my all time favorite vocalists so thanks for this! It was a real affirming feeling to hear a lot of the notes/analyses I had made on MJK’s voice during my commute/vocal work sessions echoed in your video here!
Most of the analysis I came up with was predicated on all the content & framework you’ve laid out in your channel so just wanted to shout out that this stuff really does work and following your stuff in one month I’ve made greater strides than on and off years of trying to move from just singing quietly in the shower 😅
I've always had trouble with that, "So loud, " movement in Eulogy. So I look forward to trying this method you have.
20:58 Baaaaaald and proud.
Brilliant! If you could analyze Mastodon's "Blood and Thunder," that would be amazing. There's a great isolated vocal track kicking around youtube, so thw ferocious fry screaming is clear, but I imagine a lot of us would really benefit from your technical dissection.
sing "sober" complete, it is almost impossible
I think there are several songs that are harder to sing... Sober is not one of them
Anything from undertow is easy to sing. As long as you can scream without hurting yourself.
@@WindnRain24 I don't think bottom is easy
@@unowhavethebiggay1430 It is.
@@unowhavethebiggay1430 I've almost passed out sustaining the "dead inside" scream at the end. I can do it but it is indeed a challenge.
I naturally have a similar singing voice to Maynard tone wise and hearing you break down the inner workings of it is awesome!
I sing like two raccoons fighting in a crown royal bag. But I still enjoyed watching this
...that sounds interesting tbh
Lol
I’d listen to that!
Me too, some of us need to be listeners.
Send vids I wanna hear
14:49 AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I started singing because i was so inspired by Maynard, this video is pure gold for me rn.
I always feel like I'm safe to expose my silly voice with your videos as I just started out with singing (proper singing actually, not just spewing notes without a clue), and you give me the confidence I need to try out stuff without feeling embarassed, and I actually feel like I'm getting better, so thank you for all your content is what I'm trying to say ahahah.
P. S., I thoroughly enjoyed your ep on Spotify
P. P. S., will you ever consider doing a video like this on Jeff Buckley? The man was a legend and keeps me motivated to improve every time I listen to him
I like your comment on Maynard’s articulation. It’s subtle but adds so much to the sound. His pronunciation of everything is so spot on, I find it very tiring to sing because I have to work so hard on nailing every syllable.
The competition for Ken Tamplin is fierce. I say this jokingly, your'e breaking down of his vocals is a master class in identifying the sound.
You are my hero. I have watched nearly every video you have ever produced. I can just imagine that you are probably the most like me person that has ever existed. Eddie Vedder, Maynard, Layne Staley, Chris Cornell, Jeff Buckley, Bono, Robert Plant, Jim Morrison, then the Candian guys, Big Wreck, Tea Party, I Mother Earth, Our Lady Peace, Tragically HIp, Neal Young, are the corner stones of my voice. oh yeah Scott Weiland. Basically I taught myself how to sing nearly ever song any of these guys ever wrote. and now im working on Jared Leto. You are literally the only other person i've ever heard of who is capable of and as obsessed as I am with replicating the sounds these other singers have made. And in my older age with less than my perfect youthful voice a lot of your techniques help me achieve what I used to do without effort.
It's amazing how much you have a similar natural quality in the vocal tone
The funny voice your using sounds like Perry Ferrell !
The clean thing is pretty great
Nice work !
I have regrettably been a wuss about singing all my life. Good advice to young people: if strangers tell you they like your singing then you should pursue singing. It's easy to hit a bad note & get down on yourself. Videos like this one, other musicians and a little work can make all the difference.
but how to sing Ticks & Leeches, that must be so hard.
I heard that when recording lateralus, Maynard lost his voice when they go to Ticks and Leeches. Must've been a rough one to do ay
@@Webeteam I mean he screamed his lungs out more than on any other TOOL song.
They don't play that song live anymore because Maynard can't be assed to replicate it anymore. When they recorded it he screamed his voice out and was unable to record for over a week.
@@user-ix6qr5if5y I mean it's insane vocals, but the problem is he doesn't even do his other screaming songs, like Eulogy, Pushit, and when he sings The Pot there is no 12 seconds scream at the end he shorts it to 4 seconds and in a lower pitch too.
@@lopolik He still sometimes does all these screams live. Ticks and Leeches, however has not been played live in a long time and the few times it did he sang it flat or used vocal effects/megaphones to create the distortion. You will have an easier time expecting him to pull of a full "The Grudge" scream live again than to sing Ticks.
Yes, Maynard's voice is so dynamic and awesome. Gives goosebumps every time. Another vocalist whose voice sounds similar to Maynard is Chevelle's Pete Loeffler. Would love to see a video on him someday Chris 😁😁
please do corey taylor!
What Keemstar didn't invite you to his Justin Bieber listening party this time Leafy?
@@stryker_6568 You good dude?
I just had a milestone of sorts happen during this: so I got hyped when I heard the scream from “The Bottom” come on and I unintentionally had some distortion/grit happen when I was getting excited about it and then I tried out using that placement and I think I am that much closer to finding where to put my distortion at because it was the best distortion I ever had accomplished and it didn’t hurt my voice (I had to clear my throat a little after so it wasn’t perfect) but I had no pain so this video helped me reach another milestone!
This is awesome, thanks for sharing Marilyn!
The big one or the one he repeats 3 times?
I NEVER heard a vocal teacher tell you to allow your voice to crack! And it seems to work!
SURE DOES! :)
I loved the video popped up in recommendations. This format where you go through a song with comments and actual replicating is just amaizing!
Well bet my neighbours just got a weird experience, my dumbass singing loudly along, prolly sounding like im clubbing a seal to death in here...
You have such a skill for teaching! Thankyou for your amazing work
Yes, "we dont want to sound like Scott Stapp"
I thought I was the only one in love with M.J.K.;) This is so awesome, nice work!
I´ve been waiting for this video so long! Thank you! Maynard is just so emotional and also versatile singer/writer
If you want to dip into a crazy character voice, look up Darroh Sudderth from Fair to Midland.
YESS!!!
I saw them live. Didn't know who they were. Fell in love with Fables from a Mayfly
One of the most incredible vocalists I know of. His range is insane and his ability to mess with his tonality is wild.
Awesome voice!
They’re one of the most underrated bands of all time
I was waiting for years this video
Thank you so much Chris! Thats huge! Big fan of both of you! I am doing covers of tool so that will help!
Do les claypool, it would be hilarious!
Finally an actual look into his technique
Well, now you have to do Chino.
@14:10 ..The Tarzan scream comes out.. YEEEEAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!
next vid "The Cookie Monster" voice tutorial.. it took me lots of practice to scream without hurting my vox chords, great vids bro!
Good attention to the details, all those subtleties really go undetected to a casual listener. I'm a new sub but i've already watched most of your videos, I've seen the Myles Kennedy video and man, this format is awesome (so are your highs on "broken wings"). Keep it up!
Somebody finally made this video! Thank you so much, Undertow was the album that really made me wanna learn how to sing. And you even talked about that insane scream at the end of Bottom to boot. Good stuff
Hey Chris, I realize that this would be taking the channel in the dreaded gear-head direction, but, would you ever consider doing an episode on your vocal chain and your rig? Your voice comes through crisp and clear, it's a joy to listen to, and it would be great to learn from your process and setup.
that scream is a C5, hell no on trying that as a baritone, i want to live.
although, didn't Chris say he's a baritone himself ?
Baritones can do that, I'm a bass-baritone and honestly your "natural" range is actually where you body has gotten comfortable and where it feels good for them, so once you break that by lowering your falsetto, raising your chest, and gaining a strong mixed voice, you end up able to do things you think you wouldn't be able to do as a "baritone", or whatever irrelevant term is used. The only relevance those voice types hold is in styles where that matters, such as operatic, or some types of theatre. But with enough practice you actually can break your own mold and be able to do that.
@@firstlast-wg2on amm.. no, it doesn't work that way
@@KevinSoriano Chris Cornell is a baritone and Axl Rose is a bass-baritone. Your argument is invalid
@@dylanjwebmusic cornell was a tenor. And Axl, well, he screams his higher notes he doesn't sing them. But, he sings beautifly his baritone range.
I never really tried singing but I love to watch your vids purely for entertainment. Thank you!
This is just amazing breakdown and demonstration.
Great video on all fronts. Professional, informative and passionate. Well done! Maynard is undeniable in his talents and this video helps people to see how he does it. Very cool.
I'm so glad I chose RUclips over sleep. This is excellent content :)
So many emotional aspects of music I wasn’t even aware of, so educational.
Amazing! This helped so much, I love it when you are experimenting with your voice trying to replicate the sound, I do it with you and it helps so much! I’d love to see one on my favourite singer Thom Yorke, but tbh I’ll watch any video you post!
I wish you included the scream at the end of The Pot
that would have been a great one!
Dude...... the fucking scream in the grudge. Sometimes to this day when I'm playing my guitar along to that album when that part in The grudge comes it still gives me goosebumps and sometimes I just stop playing just to listen for a minute. Hes so next level man
Have you considered doing a video like this on Corey Taylor? His range is pretty huge, and he can maintain the top of his chest range with fry for concert after concert, especially with his stone sour stuff. I've been analyzing and recording myself with various vocalists that I like, and I can usually get pretty close with the techniques you've been teaching with your fantastic list of singing tutorials! But I cannot seem to copy much off of Corey Taylor on my own. Please consider doing a Corey Taylor video!
Pedagogically and didactically a great video. Very intelligent and eloquent. One of the best teachers I've seen on the net. Thnx. It was an honour to watch this video. Greets from The Netherlands.

I was waiting for this one haha! I haven't seen anyone asking about Tom Waits though. His voice on songs like "16 shells from a thirty-ought-six" is just unreal. I know his style is probably very harmful, but he's been pulling it off for decades and it just sounds sooooo good.
