Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under The Bridge - Anthony Kiedis - ISOLATED VOCALS - Analysis and Tutorial
The Red Hot Chili Peppers were known for that cool vibe that helped distinguish their sound but they were also backed by some incredible musicians which in my opinion even outshined the vocals.
What other commercially successful bands can you think of where the musicianship behind the band overshadowed the lead vocals? Let me know in the comments!
I’ve got Anthony Kiedis’ isolated vocals from “Under The Bridge” and we’re going to explore what about his sound helped keep the audience mesmerized in the tune.
I’ll also look at the song with just the instrumentation and the guitar parts so we can look at how Anthony’s vocals merged with the band. I’ll finish by showing you how we could spruce up the tune with some added effects.

Anthony Kiedis is a punk rock singer in a band of musicians. I believe it is this unique balance that adds a different dynamic to their music which makes them great. Some of the best dishes have some ingredients that are not good on their own but delicious in a complete dish.
Thanks for weighing in!
Well Flea actually played in a punk band called fear and appeared in a punk movie called suburbia. And John has a lot of punk influences, wearing dead Kennedys shirts, liking Ramones and the butthole Surfers etc. Growing up in Los Angeles during the late 70s it was pretty much impossible to not be influenced by or like punk rock
I love Anthony Kiedis voice!! It’s unique and you know it’s him when you here it!
True!
Talent comes in second after heart. RHCP have serious heart. A very genuine band doing their own thing, which is rarely seen these days.
Well said!
Chili Peppers as a band are like when you're just throwing a bunch of ingredients together, but after you cook it it's somehow really good
Haha! I think you're right!
@@kentamplin interesting take
Some of their earlier 80's stuff is an acquired taste but no matter if you love them or not, you gotta respect their originality.
But really good ingredients. Don’t downplay the musicianship.
They had a few attempts at making the dish though remember. Multiple guitar players, drummers. The only constants are Kiedis and Flea. They had guitarists before John 1.0, between John 1.0 and John 2.0, and also after John 2.0 as well. They didn't happen upon such an amazing mix over night, they chopped and changed the ingredients until it worked perfectly. Not so much chance as gradual steps towards a better array of talent. Obviously, if we're making a Beef Curry we need some Beef (Kiedis) and some Garlic (Flea). But whatever else we add, Tomatoes, Chilli powder, Corriander, Ginger, it retains its "Beef Curryness" yet depending on taste either improves or worsens the dish.
The rest of this comment is basically a massive essay reviewing all their albums, got a bit carried away lol. So feel free to skip the rest, if not, you are my kind of human, much love to you from a self-proclaimed RHCP Fanatic.
If you go back to the bands origins, you'll find an album simply called "Red Hot Chili Peppers", yes they made a self-titled album years and years ago. Unfortunately, pretty much no one, like litterally nobody (Well, maybe
As a singer myself this just proves that you don't need to be a great singer to make it nor do you have to have perfect pitch and tone. I agree with you Ken a singer is only a singer because he or she has the guts to be. You need to have a confidence and the ability to make people feel what you are singing and you need to engage the listener.
That guitar riff from John Frusciante is just magic
Indeed!
I never noticed the imperfectness in his singing all the times i heard the song.. i have always loved this song
It's a good one.
In my opinion singing is all about conveying the message truthfully. It's all about touching people's hearts. That's why keidis, dylan, lou reed and a lot of other vocalists that are not the "greatest" technically are so amazing.
Thanks for listening!
This song is from Blood Sugar Sex Magic. By the time Californication came out he was a markedly better singer. There are songs where he does demonstate range, power, tone, etc. He belts really well.
Rock on!
@@kentamplin Ken, any chance we'll be getting a video about a later chili album?
He has voice lessons szince 1989
For me its not always about how powerfull or technical a singer is but there charisma and emotion. His got a cool ass sounding tone too . I love the chillis
Awesome!
The songwriting quality from the RHCP is just incredible. This outweighs the pitchyness by far
I love Anthony's voice. I've read his book Scar Tissue and the RHCH are true artists!
🤘🤘
Under The Bridge is one of the Chili Peppers' best songs because even though Anthony's delivery isn't 100% on pitch on the record or live on stage, he sings from his heart.
Rock on! 😀
A truly fair analysis. I wouldn't say it better. I guess the AK's phenomenon is also like when we listen to RHCP we feel like he's one of us... with our eccentricities, with out imperfections, i guess.
One of my favorite bands of all time hes not a classical trained singer but I do love listening to Anthony's voice it still sounds nice and sometimes it's refreshing to not have to be show off with your vocal talent he conveys emotion in his voice
Rock on!
ken is like , your uncle who comes everymorning knock your gate and say hey champ lets go and rock practice and rock on singing....... and your everyday is like heaven............ when i see him saying hello everybody welcome........everytime it just come in my mind, just wanted to share with you .
😀👍
I know Anthony from the local shopping plaza/food court. He seems happy as heck that John is back. Noteworthy=no reverb on the vocal/Rick Rubin doesn't use it. For one of THE world's biggest rock stars; Anthony hangs out like a regular local. He liked my Bowie remake! Cool guy. He really makes me mad cause like you say=not the best voice; but am amazingly talented vocalist and lyricist.
Awesome!
@@kentamplin , Ken...it just hit me what it is about Keides as a singer: Though everyday guy voice=he tries to sing beautiful. Taught me its ok for a rock dude to try and sing beautiful. I was always a Brian Johnson scream it out guy. Ha.
@@ZumaDogg Kiedis doesn't have an everyday voice, not at all. Its one of the most remarkable tonality voices on the planet ....otherwise known as the lyrical baritone, bright and emotive. Singers all across the world would kill for Anthonys voice timber and tone. Its why he has been so successful. Its very easy on the ear and has the ability to give incredible emotion and story telling ability. The only thing one could criticise him on is his slight off pitch at times, otther than that his singing skills are remarkable. He creates light and shade with his inflections whilst singing, and tiny nuances to his phrasing that remain mostly unnoticed on a conscious level but separate him from average singers. He can switch effortlessly from laid back and ferocious rapping, straight back into emotive ballad like singing in an instant, not many singers can do this as effortlessly as Kiedis. His voice is very powerful, contrary to what you may think, it is very resonant and projects extremely well. Ive heard him without a microphone. He by far not an everage singer. he may have been in the beginning , but absolutely not now.
I also feel this song is so powerful and was so popular bc of the lyrics. It’s sang in a way that matches the melancholy tone of everything. Everyone has had a “worst day of my life.” And I think in this case, it’s about addiction. It’s such a harsh and difficult reality and such a painful thing to deal with from both the inside and the outside, the imperfection of the vocal feels so much more raw and real and forthcoming. That’s why they didn’t really put any effects on the vocal. It would have ruined the raw realness of it. It feels like you could be listening to a poem a close friend wrote.
The tambor and soul of Anthony's voice on top of his lyrics rhythm and melody are what makes him successful.
This is why this series is so good. Honesty! An real honest look at the vocals and breakdown of when it’s pitchy and why it works. Great Stuff!
Thank you!
'A singer is only a singer because they have the guts to be one' 👍
Has a ring to it!
That's right.
Lyrics are great, I do think his tone and timbre is very unique and signature, no one sounds like him. Guitar is a warm blanket and bass playing is always so supportive of the melody and interesting.
The imperfections make it perfect
👍
That’s funny that you’d point out how important the percussion is bc I always find myself wanting to snap along to this song.
I think He creates a MOOD to his songs and then brings the Mood Up!
I agree.
FINALLY! They are my top American Rock Band All Time! Thanks Ken!
Thanks for listening.
It's not about being the best or perfect singer or player, it's about being unique and have that X factor. All imperfections are hidden in the mix, but that's the thing with every record and performer that plays live instruments and are not using auto tune. After all, we're all just imperfect humans.
Indeed!
G'day Ken great vocal and song analysis, love your videos, they exude your passion for music. Keep up the brilliant work, inspirational. :)
I've been a Peppers fan so long it just sounds natural to me. I always liked that about Rick Rubin's recording style; that he records the vocals dry with no effects at all.
Rock on!
Great points on this, Ken. It reminds me that you don't have to be perfect to have a song that reaches people, it can truly be perfectly imperfect.
That's right.
Awesome video dude! The song above all else conveys the loneliness of addiction, and it's such a personal song to Anthony. I feel like I don't even notice the pitchy spots as being 'out of tune'. Instead my ear hears it more as microtonal inflection that adds to the feelings of fragility and raw honest humanity that makes this song so amazing and relatable. Its the same thing as the blues, being on pitch is mostly a secondary goal. It would completely detract from the feeling if it was in tune. Same goes for his tone on this one which like you said is kinda just like it could be someone on a beach or busking with an acoustic, a style which fits perfectly with the beautiful poetry of Anthony's lyrics!
Thanks for the thoughts.
Thanks for the great video! I think it's worth mentioning that , technique aside, the tone and texture of his voice really works well with this band. It is a pleasant voice to listen to with all the quirkiness and all.
Totally agree!
I think everybody here notices the groove of the song..and anthony carries it on by adding his singing
Rock on!
Spot on Ken....personally never was a fan and he can’t hold a note to save his life. Another generational band.
Rock on!
Not everyone is a blessed with a great voice. He made off great with what he was given
oh NOOOO that is simply isn't true at all. Maybe when he was younger he didn't hold notes as easily, but by God he is now one of the best singers I've heard live, he has improved immensely. His voice is clear, extremely emotive, his tone is just to die for. Singers all around the world would kill to have a smooth tone and timber like his. He uses all sorts of switches live and on record to give an incredible feel and emotion. He now hits the notes pretty good nowadays, and he certainly has a powerful voice. He is a baritone so he doesn't have the high notes as some singers do, but he can go low and reasonably high. He creates expression like very few singers can do. He creates light and dark shades right up there with the best.
Really enjoyed this analysis, thank you :)
My pleasure!
I remember taking my first vocal 1 class at the local community college. Had to pick 2 songs of my own that I had to get an instrumental track and then give a vocal performance in front of the class and teacher. To say I was terrified is an understatement, but this song immediately came to mind. I felt like I could just be myself and connect to the audience with it, that they could relate to the content. Also didn’t hurt that the singing by Anthony on this one wasn’t some Pavarotti technique, and that’s what makes it so awesome. It’s real and grabs attention. Ended up getting an A with it
The guitar, bass, and drums on this track are unbelievable in their groove, carrying along the vocals
Good for you! Rock on!
Your effects you added greatly improved the song, you’re spot on.
😀👍
Lol I respectfully disagree. The chili peppers must have purposefully recorded the way they did...as it sounds authentic and more emotional without the effects
You are good teacher 🙂
Glad you think so!
Great analysis, Ken!! Would LOVE to hear your thoughts on more chili peppers songs. Keep up the great work my friend!
Thanks! Will do!
Also I think this particular singer is better in other, idk, keys? Like I think he’s pretty young here but look at Californication, like 10 years later, it just gets better. He’s great in Parallel Universe.
Hey bro. Great vid . I was a Cathedral Choir boy and have been singing all my life. More recently Ive been trying different genres/styles and have been looking for some direction. I can smash Faure's "Librera me" from his requiem but Im enjoying the transition to newer music. Thanks Ken
I like singing this song because of it’s vibe and because it’s easier for me. I like the part “I never wanna feel like I did that day” awesome band awesome song, thanks for your take on it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
RHCP is my favorite band! Inspires me to not give up! Also, John Frusciante is back! Looking forward to their future record. Thanks for analyzing this song!
Rock on! 😀
One thing singers like Anthony, Mick, and Bowie have is, besides a great band, is charisma. I think that makes them more interesting to listen to. Plus, even if you don't think any of them can sing that well, ya have to admit, in most songs they all just go for it as if they are the greatest singers on the planet. Gotta respect that. Lol Interestingly enough, I read once that Def Leppard rejected Joe Elliot at first because they said he couldn't sing. Glad they changed their minds. 😆
Rock on! 😊
DL rejected Joe as a guitarist. Pete Willis thought he was a good singer.
No vibrato....What a killer band....They wrote some great Funky Rock .....One thing I do love and respect about the Tamplin Academy is.....You will get the truth.....even if it hurts a lil.....lol.....Anthony was a helluva Frontman and his soul was in it all the way...Rock on Peppers!...Another awsome tune and lesson from the vocal coach!
I appreciate that, Darin!
Oh I’m gonna use the vibe thing to my advantage. My singing sweet spot us B2ish - C5, towards F#5, but only if I’m focused. My voice is like my face: it doesnt hide anything.
Go for it!
I absolutely love everything about this band. John's work here and his solo work makes ya feel better. It's perfection for the soul.
However, Anthony is literally the voice, beautiful imperfections and all, of the Peppers. Without him, it's just not RHCP.
I'm enjoying your channel, I'm subbing!
Glad you're here!
this is how it suppose to be. the masterpiece is always the sum of it's parts and not a single part is perfect. what's more important no part should be way better then other parts because balance is broken and your masterpiece is just one Great part and pieces...
Well said!
I think the rawness of the vocals and guitar give the band a live energetic vibe while the two back end players hold it all together especially on this reggae grunge ballad..
Rock on!
Thanks. Gives us all hope. Would have been cool if you auto tuned it to see what this song would have sounded like if produced in 2021!
Thanks for the visit.
You are a positive soul ✌🏻
Thank you, Mike!
When you say vibe I always thought soulful. Band was super influenced by bob marley great call, all the funk and punk was purely motivated by communicating the purest and most visceral convictions. The depth is universal and that’s why it sold so well.
Thanks Ken, probably the desire to be a singer, and the conviction that you are “the singer”, because you say so, are the most important parts, beyond the skills of the singer or vocalist. Great series Ken 😊
A singer is only a singer because he has the guts to be one.
I love this series
Wonderful!
Yeaaaaahh! We’ve got another one. Thank you Ken.
More to come!
@@kentamplin I hope they never stop. We’ve got 70 years of popular music behind us! The more the better sir!
Bro Ken , in A star is born movie, dad of Lady Gaga says that there are many Sinatra like voice, but only Frank has the courage to sing and show it to the people..thats Guts!
Thanks for this one!
A singer is only a singer because he has the guts to be one.
Nice job on the analysis. Very interesting concepts discussed.
😀👍
I love his voice so particular 👏😍❤️
I never really noticed the inexactness of AK's vocals. It was never noticeable to me listening to the song until seeing this video. Now I hear it even with the music added. I still love this song, the album and the band though. Very interesting to hear the isolated vocals though. Great choice Ken. Thanks for bringing it to us.
My pleasure, Adam!

Thank you, Kenny!
Yay!! I love this song. One of my favorite songs to sing.
Rock on!
Learn so much. That is some serious mixing equipment you got there.
You got that right!
Thank you for sharing this. Being a fan of jazz as well as metal, I get the jazz guitar chord in the song. As for the singing of this, I look at it as harmonic/melodic storytelling; as if Anthony was having a conversation with a group of people about L.A. Haunting songs can be beautiful if the music gives the vocals atmosphere. I'm going to go give this song another listen.
👍👍
Great band and great song
Rock on! 😀
Hey Ken! Saw the Red Hots back in the late 90's. Very cool band to see in concert. Simple stage set up. Looked like a big livingroom. Couch, tables, lamps, etc. The music and show was anything but simple. They totally rocked. Wouldn't consider Anthony a great singer but he is a good frontman. Pretty much every song was a crowd pleaser. Great show! RHCP are a cool band that rock hard!! Til next time Ken.😎
I'll bet! How cool!
@@kentamplin Gotta love the Red Hots!😍😎

Glad you enjoyed it, Josh!
You are the Teacher Ken!
Thanks Michael! Rock on!
I always wondered what I liked about this song. You explained it...it just feels cool. Tom Petty kind of makes me happy in the same way... it's not about just the singing.
Rock on! 😀
Yeah definitely agree with a couple of the people's comments, he definitely got better by californication and in my opinion even better than that on by the way
Rock on! 😀
Would love to hear vocal tutorial on Lights by Journey!
Rock on! 😀
KT always makes me in a good mood 🙂
Happy to hear that!
I love this episode, I'm a fan of the Chili Peppers! I don't think Anthony's the best singer but history knows worse singers than him. He's really good at conveying emotions :) I actually think that the guitarist John Frusciante is actually a better singer. His solo albums are great. I love this series, Ken!
Thanks for weighing in, Evelyn!
When I sing it I always I always say "Lonely as high ham" sounds a lot better that way. Yup lol
I'm a fan of Red Hot Chili Peppers and honestly I saw some points that, for a fan, it doesn't care. But for a musician and vocal coach, you just point truths. It's all vibe. Thanks for your analysis. PS: if you have a list, please put Matthew Bellamy. He's Muse vocalist (Panic Station is a great music to analyze). Cheers from Brazil.
Rock on!
I hope you do more RHCP reviews....and more videos focused on John Frusciante. He is a great singer, maybe the best back up vocalist.

David bowie is most certainly a great singer. Lady stardust, wild is the wind, life on Mars, Lady grinning soul, and modern love are good ones to hear how diverse and technical his voice could be.
You’re comments remind me of how Lou Reed or even Tom waits do their stuff man. A quick isolated vocals of perfect day would be really insightful my man. Love the vid by the way, really good takes.
Thanks for the visit.
Another great episode sir Ken. Didn't noticed that his singing is a bit pitchy but i think it sounded cool and fits to the band's sound. Cool terminology "vibe singing". "Detuned singing" is weird but how did it fit with the music? Maybe that what makes their sound interesting. Thanks a lot sir for this series.
Rock on! 😀
Finally, an honest breakdown of Anthony's pitchy vocals. I've heard some if his older "live and unplugged" works, and it's so cringy. I do still love the music, it's a whole vibe. I think he may have gotten better over time too. Probably had some coaching over the years.
This is still a very nostalgic and lovable song for me though. The whole BSSM album hits me right in the teenage feels.
😀👍
Chili Peppers is an insane band, as he said, with outstanding musicians

Always wondered why I was able to smash this at a karaoke now I know!

Hmmm that's not the reason why you smashed it. If you did. It might be somewhat easy to sing from a technical point if view, as in pitch, but to get the right nuances, tond and delivery isn't easy at all
Wow a great seminar.Thank you Ken.Greetings from Berlin(Fechi's design factory)
Glad you liked it!
In those studio clips someone says to Flea/John the backing vox are sharp. Cant really tell do the the lofi nature of the video was it sharp to the instrumentation or Kiedis. If it was to the instrumentation, then it was half step to kiedis or more. But as they say, plusminus semitone is within tolerance. Nice and interesting video, good that you werent overly pc about it, his singing is pretty brutal at times. One of those wonders, it would not have been the same with another singer.
Ive got two questions for you: Who was the viking in Britains masked singer? And two: Do you know Kurt James? I met him a few years ago. Boy that guy can play!
Morton Harket and Steeler.
Kiedis' singing responds to Frusciante's guitar, which, strangely enough, isn't properly tuned either on that great, great song: because it sounds better taht way! Thank you, Ken, for the analysis, and for the advice on having the gut to be a singer.
My pleasure, Philippe!
Great.
Thanks!

Really enjoyed this one Ken ... I could see how the affects you added to his voice made it sound bigger for sure. Somehow I still like the original better, I’m not sure if that’s because that’s what I’m used to or it’s just more intimate like you said, chili peppers is definitely an anomaly.... cheers man !
Rock on!
Yeah, please do more alternative rock bands! You always do a great job of reacting to isolated vocals ...
Thanks! Will do!
Good comment about vocalists evolving. Early Soundgarden isn't Chris' best vocals, but he got better, and better, and better.
Rock on! 😀
I think the interest builds right from the start with that chord progression (F# major to D major) which is a cray cray chord combination. And I hear you on the out of tune, easy singing at the being that to me sounds like real vulnerability. It's like he doesn't want to sing the song and have to admit to the listener that he's dealing with struggles with heroin. That's what draws me in.
Sensitive observations. I like it! Rock on!
I really love this series. So much to take with
