    Thanks for the video. I used headphones to listen and ended up choosing the h4n and x8 every time but that could be because I actually own both of those units. Been using the X8 primarily since it came out. I also love my h1n and use that with a lav for most of the video on my channel.

    The R26 still is up front in most of the scenarios what did Roland what the others did not? Great comparison thank you for sharing. It is so sad that the Roland I/O don't work anymore with the M1 series from Apple do anyone know if there's an update planned?

    Questions::
    1: Did'nt you think about comparing with the Sony PCM-D100 (whom Sony stoped manufacturing): more expensive but Mic and Preamps are a good comparition point.
    2: What about quality of build and robustnes for everyday use ?
    3: what about rumble sound when touching/manipulating X8 comparing to others ?
    4: sensibility to wind hydrometry ?
    Again many thanks for the nice work

    The guitar examples were interesting.
    The Zoom H5 had a neutral sound, the Tascam x8 has prominent low frequency response, but it was the Roland R-07 that seem to capture the sound of the room, which to me, felt like a realistic representation of the recording!

    Hi, thank you so much for this video!! I have a question, please? 🙂 I am a voice over artist, but looking to record in a more laidback way for making podcasts, whereby I don't have to sit at a desk. Which recorder to you think is best for bringing out the warmer and richer bass sounds of my voice, while at the same time not picking up every single 'S' or pop harshly? I like to be able to record close to the microphone like I am used to with "normal" microphones during voice overs to get a very warm and almost whispery sound, yet I don't like to have to edit out many unwanted "mouth sounds". Do you think any of these handheld recorders are good for this purpose? Thank you!

    • @DarkStoneCastle
      @DarkStoneCastle  Год назад +1

      The tascam is the warmest by a little bit and would probably be the best of these for you. You will need a pop filter as well.

    I Iistened at my best 5 times to the test with the XLR input. I found the same hum with each and every recorder. Could find no difference. If my ears are right, then the noise of your microphone drownes the noise of the pre amps of the mics. Or am i simply wrong, is there another explanation like a hum in the room?

    When you taper yourself off benzos did you take a medication to help you with the withdrawal and what did you take. I'm am now tapering from Clonazepam. I'm not able to take other medication to help me with the withdrawal because I'm sensitive to these types of medication. Can I person successful come off these medication without a medication to help with the withdrawal

      I used no extra medication when I weaned off benzos. If I had 2 really bad nights of virtually no sleep while weaning, I would bump the dosage up a little bit for one night before going back to where I left off with the taper.

    There is virtually no difference in the audio quality of these tests. This is especially true for the post-processed voice with separate mics. The X-Y mics offered similar sound quality also. I think that this test would be far better if two things were done:
    1. Set each recorder individually to produce the best sound possible. Each of these recorders has a different array of settings that can dramatically change the sound. For example, the last test with the guitar and singer, each recorder needed the gain increased to better capture the guitar and vocals. Recording them at 6' simply tells us that all of them suck at the gain settings that were chosen for each recorder. We would learn much more if each recorder was correctly set up to record music and vocals according to their individual settings.
    One example to illustrate this. I own the Tascam X8 and previously I owned the Zoom H8. If the mics on the Tascam are set in A-B configuration instead of X-Y, there is a considerable increase in recording quality. I write original songs and perform them. I was surprised at how much more "soundstage" and detail the Tascam X8 recorded when I used the attached mics in A-B configuration. Comparing it to the Zoom H8, the H8 did not pick up the sound of either the guitar or the vocals as well as the Tascam X8 at a distance of 2' - 3'. The Zoom H8 mics were far less sensitive.
    A second critical example of this point is that the Tascam X8 can be set to record at 192 Htz and 32 bit sound quality. A good choice to check the music quality would be to record at 92 Htz at 24 bit audio. This is equivalent audio to high-quality streaming services like Tidal. At these settings, I am fairly certain that only the Zoom 4n, Zoom H5 and the Tascam X8 would remain in the competition, although I have no experience with the Roland recorders. In audio quality the Zoom H8 I did own and the Tascam X8 I currently own are very close to each other and I doubt that the human ear could detect much of a difference if both are properly set up. However, we MIGHT see a difference with complex music as described in Point #2 below recorded in ultra HD audio (92 Htz, 24 bit). This might flush out which of these audio recorders have the best amps and audio recorders.
    2. It would be far more instructive to push these recorders to their limits, though I know that is not easy. For example, if each recorder was used to record a four-part string quartet or a full band, we would see much more differentiation in the quality of the recordings. As the recorders had to track a greater number of subtle and loud musical sounds, we might see which one is superior in audio recording.
    That being said, this was a great video and interesting to watch. The Zoom H4n, H5 and H6 have been the gold standard for portable audio recording for a long time now but I think that the Tascam equals them or beats them based on my experience with the Zoom H8, which supposedly has better sound recording that its siblings.

      Oh my lord, it's just a youtube video! Although I agree with the majority of the points you have made, this video is not intended for audio engineers. It is merely a simple run and gun comparison. Unfortunately, I have to work a full time job for now, so I don't have much time to do the extensive testing you recommend. (I wish I did...I really do) For instance, the acoustic guitar part at the end was done in 30 minutes on Mother's Day when I got together with my younger brother. Everything set up and recorded in 30 minutes. Lights, cameras, recorders, go!! Yes, the gain could have been a little higher but I had to avoid possible clipping and no time for a redo. But, going back to your first sentence... I think you pretty much summed it up. There's not a whole hell of a lot of difference. On a cell phone I can't even hear a difference. On high quality headphones, the Roland R26 stands out as being the most 'different' from the pack with the XY mics. Not necessarily better, but 'different'. Tascam seems to have a little fuller sound than the others but again...not necessarily 'better.' To each his own. I much prefer XY to AB, myself. That's just me, though. But I do appreciate your elaborate comment. I think that's the longest comment I've ever gotten on any video I've made. 😃😃😃😃
