I am a Zoom guy and, so far, had always sworn to never get any kind of Tascam equipment. It’s like being a Canon person; you’d never catch me using Sony, not even under heavy torture. That being said, I’m strongly considering getting the X8. I’ll have to fight my demons first, and accept that I like this device. Thanks for the review.

Thanks for making this video. Setting the X8 and the H6 to 24-bit and the same sample rate should have made no difference. It's down to each manufacturers quality of microphones, pre-amps and positioning. 32 bit float will make no difference to the audio quality - honestly - unless you change the sample frequency. Where 32 bit float wins is having such a huge dynamic range with no clipping on the high volume end. Also, If you have recorded something too low, with 32-bit it can be easily recovered without raising the noise floor, hence the phrase "Set it and forget it". To be able to record say a thunderstorm from relatively quiet raindrops to a crash of thunder successfully without touching the unit, and without having to employ a large amount of compression/limiters, in a word is astonishing! - Just watch out for your speakers/eardrums on playback. Awesome comparison. Both of their XY mics are way better than I expected. Definitely seem extremely similar at 24bit but 32 bit sounds much nicer in my opinion. Thanks for the video Eazy!

Great video! I especially liked the leaf crunch and soda fizz. 😎 I am using one of these for recording DJ sets and I love the headroom, and the way it records separate tracks for crowd noise and mixer output. These are versatile pieces of gear.

Nice comparison. When you compared the 32-bit float to the zoom h6 24-bit, the X8 sounded MUCH better. The idea of not fiddling with any gain knobs and just pressing record is incredibly compelling. Are you now using exclusively 32-bit float for all of your recordings? I have an X8 on order and it's supposed to arrive later this month. Can't wait!!

@@TheTechPreacher Your hears can t tell you the difference between 24 and 32 bit, really. LoL....Where the 32 bit can come in handy is when you clip, not really quality wise, at least for your human hears...Your dog would probably ear the difference, he s a better sound engineer than you, LOL

When recording outdoors, the Tascam was blown out by the wind while the Zoom was crystal clear. What deadcats did you use for the test? I also have both recorders, but have not made a similar side by side comparison. I like the interface and features of the X8 better, but there are a few software glitches and reliability issues.

Which windscreen did you use on the X8? It seems like when the mic capsules are on the AB orientation, most generic windscreen made for hand held recorders might not fit properly.
I had a few of them laying around my studio and it fit with no problem.
That Tascam did sound better with the pop can demo. I think peaking would work better with the 32 bit. For over $150 more though, is it worth it? Thanks for posting this dude.
Peaking is ok at 32bit because it can be fix with no problem it's great

I purchased a Zoom F6 and love it, but seeing this one, I also want the Tascam too.
The main difference I'm noticing is the the xy mics on the Tascam seem to have a slightly wider stereo pickup.
No, you do not want to trade one of the very best recorder against that handheld recorder.
Do your research before making any decision.
X8 has so many issues software and hardware wise you probably want to avoid this thing.
The zoom f6 is a great recorder the tascam x8 doesn't have issues I'm not sure what you talking about mines works great. If you have one maybe you should get it replaced but to say that you are wrong

So is it true that 32 float doesn’t increase sound quality. I’ve been wanting to upgrade from my H1 to the 6 but I heard Essential is almost here.
It gives you a clean source but you need a good microphone and microphone placement
Can you still record in 32 bit while sending audio to the camera and have two separate audio tracks? One track saved to the recorder and one track sent over to the camera

I want to like the portacapture x8, but not sure if I want to pay for a screen that suffers contrast burn in/ghosting, which has been confirmed by other users. 1st gen releases are always problematic, as not everything can be fixed by firmware upgrades.
Mmmmmmm tascam has been around for years this is not there 1st gen recorders. I've been using the tascam x8 for a month now almost every day and don't have screen issues. Thanks for watching
@@TheTechPreacher See FLorian Bodlee's video. I have used Tascam products for years and my DR-40 has been a workhorse for years, tho the headphone jack no longer works. Glad you do not have screen issues.

there are some people who just base their decision on Reddit or worst Quora.
Screen is perhaps not on par with one in your latest iPhone, but who cares? It is not for doing photo editing or even watching videos. It is there to control and monitor your audio recorder...and currently I do not know any other recorder in this approximate price range which has a cleaner, nicer colour touchscreen that makes everything really easy to set. I have near zero issues with the screen per se. There are a few things that could make the device even better, but a more expensive screen is not even among the top 10 in my wishllist.

24/96 is all you ever need. 16 bit is as good (quality wise) as 24 or 32 bit. Bit rate increases headroom to prevent clipping. 44.1 kHz is sufficient and is the number of times per second the sound waves are sampled. 96khz makes a very detailed wave and is better, but the quality difference is hard to tell. Enjoy! I’ve always been a Tascam fan, but I know zoom is a great product too.

Why are these things still using AA batteries? It is 2022, they should have built in rechargeable batteries,
Oooo no definitely you want battery like this when you are in the field. Rechargeable battery life span is not that good plus when you are shooting a long video and the batteries run down it's easy swappable in please you can use USB power chargerayso in there is no need for batteries at all. I hope you understand trust me film makers don't want that

I love been portable & Sony got me cover it.
But truth is, that this devices are amazing! But you need to doing very pro, ask yourself if you want having big tools or portable small ones but still great ;)
